  • I decided to try my hand at woodturning a miniature box.
This one is 1.75" tall x 1.25" wide, made from a red oak stair spindle.
“Many of the woods I use are from trees that are cut down for construction. This is wood that would otherwise be burned or end up in a landfill.
To me, it is exciting to find the hidden beauty in a chunk of wood. Even a very plain piece of wood offers design opportunities. When working with plain wood, I often enhance the wood by carving or burning. My carved and burned designs mimic textures and patterns found in nature.

Very nicely done. If you do not have one, consider investing in a D-Way parting tool. It is slightly wedge shaped, and would allow you to undercut the bottom in one smooth stroke. No burning, and creates a narrow kerf. Well worth the investment in time and effort saved.

Absolutely gorgeous ... I smiled when you fitted the lid for the first time and it got stuck (been there, done that) ... what a cracking project 👍

Thanks Barry! At least it was easy to pry off! I've had to use a knife on some to pry them off! Lol

That’s a neat little box Heather. Have you considered taking an Allen wrench and grinding it flat on the short side (make a handle for the longer side to go into)? That might be easier for hollowing out something that small. 😊

I have definite looked into making this hollowing tool, just haven't taken the time to do it!

Hi Heather, awesome job ❤it. I am not being sarcastic or rude, but I feel that some safety precautions are needed if you want let me know and I’ll be glad you help you out. But very nice job. I also like making small little things to give to my grand daughter for her little doll house.

The finished piece is absolutely beautiful. I love the size and shape. The finish is excellent.👍 But it appeared to me that your tools, gouge and skew, are not at all sharp. I saw mostly dust coming from the cuts. In the beginning you didn't appear to have any purpose as to the shape you were going for. It seemed as though you were just playing around until something happened. Things like that don't make for a very interesting video. And it makes the video run long. This video would be better if edited down to about 15 minutes. A little narration or at least a caption or two to inform the viewer what is going on would be nice too. Still it is a very nice piece. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂

Thank you for the honesty Glen!
I actually did have a shape in mind for this piece when I started, I just wanted to get the shape right before parting off the lid.
The tools were very sharp, but the oak was really dry, causing a lot of small dusty shavings. It was actually a piece of kiln dried stair spindle.
I don't like to cut out too much of my work, because I like to show people how I make these pieces.
I'm not a teacher, and also not a big talker, so I let the viewer just enjoy, ( or not) the process.
Thank you again for watching, Heather

Making small things is great fun, I do it a lot these days.
And your skew seems to be a bit on the dull side in this video. 😎
