@@lemmon-up4er Jack Dempsy was a champion boxer; TOM Dempsey was the NFL kicker who, on 8 Nov 1970, nailed a 63 yard FG on the game-ending play to propel the New Orleans Saints over the Detroit Lions 19 - 17. It was an incredible feat for several reasons: 1) Dempsey -- like most FG kickers of the time -- was an "old style" straight-on kicker ... NOT a "soccer style" kicker. Straight-on kickers had the advantage of getting the ball up in the air MUCH more quickly (thereby diminishing the risk of having the kick blocked), BUT it came at the SACRIFICE of not being able to kick over greater distance downfield. . Soccer-style kickers eventually took over the NFL because of their MUCH greater downfield distance range (the kick starts out much more akin to a "line drive" golf shot which carries over distance, as opposed to the parabola "bloop" football flight path generated by straight-ahead toe kickers. So being able to kick a ball over a crossbar 63 yards downfield as a straight-on kicker is nothing short of phenomenal. 2) The kicking surface at old Tulane Stadium left much to be desired. It was crabgrass and bumpy dirt -- a far cry from the antiseptic kicking surfaces FG kickers enjoy in most games today. 3) Tom Dempsey was a "handicapped" player insofar as he was born without toes on his right/kicking foot (along with no fingers on his right hand). "Some" tried to diminish Dempsey's accomplishment by claiming he had an "unfair advantage" kicking with a "club foot" because the tight leather kicking shoe and wide flat kicking surface was akin to a hard leather covered mallet striking the ball ... with no toes to hurt) 4) Let's not forget Dempsey's kick occurred in New Orleans at or below sea level -- wherein the ball was heavier and subject to far more atmospheric pressure & humidity than it is in Mile High Denver where Dempsey's record was "broken"
@UClzpeN9pBo1t1gCvYPXkjEA oh thanks I didn’t know which Michael Jackson we were talking about. Patriots recently signed a corner Michael Jackson Sr so thought that what was being talked about. Lol
I still remember the final regular season game when the Giants played the Patriots in 2007. It was a back and forth game that the Patriots eventually won. A Patriots fan actually looked at me and said "See you guys in the Super Bowl" as we were leaving the stadium. Lo and behold, the Giants and Patriots met again in Super Bowl 42, which the Giants won.
Tom Brady's comments in a pre SB interview provided coach Coughlin with some bulletin board material which ignited the defense to harass the heck out Brady all game long.
bro same i remember just saying “imma skip to my team and watch theirs only” but then i realized i went through all the other 31 teams already before my team came up. I loved watching this and it was great to learn about each team stadium’s history.
Thanks NFL Throwback. Not sure why I waited two years to watch this video. It was remarkably well done. There are a lot of stadiums I wish I was able to have seen an NFL game at, even if they aren't the high end venues of today. When there is a lot of history in one place, sometimes that alone is enough to make the experience worth it. As a 49ers fan Candlestick Park will always be my stadium. BTW, was very happy to hear a lot of the NFL Films music used in the segment. Whenever I hear the work from the likes of Sam Spence, Tom Hedden, and David Robidoux along with NFL Films footage I can't help but brandish a sentimental smile. Cheers boss :D
Im a Steelers Fan and Candlestick park is the only place I ever saw an NFL game live in 2003 the Year before the Roethlisberger era began. My boyfriend at the time was a 49ers fan so we made a vacation of it to see our teams play and to go to California my first and only time there also...yes this was a great video
@@michelledotson7130 I remember that game. Monday Night football. 49ers beat the Steelers that day. Ronnie Lott had his number retired. Both teams went nowhere that season though.
Oh yes I forgot that was a Monday Night Football we were hoping to see some movie stars and Jennifer Garner was at the game it was a great time that night we tailgated after the game with friendly strangers... San Francisco is beautiful place to visit and yeah neither team went anywhere Lol
My first and only NFL stadium visit was to First Energy on Baker Mayfield’s debut. There was a physical altercation between Browns and Jets fans just a dozen seats and a row away from me when beer was spilled. The place was nuts as Mayfield led the Browns to their first victory at the time in 635 days! You might remember Bud Light unlocked “victory fridges” around the city.
I remember seeing that game on tv that night. Twas a fun one. I had an up close view of Seattle's Centurylink Field nearly two years ago for my 21st birthday, and that was one of the BEST presents I've ever received! I got to see the "Richard Sherman homecoming" after the Seahawks let him go that season.
Incredible video - from the pacing to the detail to the graphics to the old pictures, this is 11/10 because rating it 10/10 wouldn't give it enough credit. Well done
My favorite part is that they "renovated" so much, the stadium lost its National Historic Landmark and National Register of Historic Places designations. The columns on the lakefront still looks incredible, but the space ship hasn't aged well at all!
@@navynugget7 - Spot on! However, I will say that it had a ton of old world charm before they completely trashed it. I understand fire exits and code adherence is a MUST (rightly so), but there were nearly three dozen alternative plans for the renovation, many of which would have maintained the external integrity while also expanding the seating bowl (blame the owners 100% for cutting costs). I complain ONLY as a pained architect who knew and adored the unadulterated and pristine beauty that was once Soldier Field. However as a Packers fan, I'm thoroughly conflicted, as my favorite team has routinely SPANKED those teensy lil bear-pups for the last 30 years. GO PACK GO!!!
@@MrOuchiez How you feeling after the Bucs ripped you guys apart cheese head? By the way...not sure do you knew, but we beat the Bucs and we are also number 1 in the North. Incredible video. My contribution; Edit at 1:22:41, the Kingdome was not the only to house 3 at once, The Metrodome in 1989 housed the Timberwolves, Twins and Vikings at once, as well. The Metrodome alsohad the Final Four, Super Bowl & World Series in less than 5 months in 1991.
As someone who loves baseball, it's really neat to see the huge debt that early NFL teams had to the MLB. I mean, Wrigley Field, Comiskey Park, Sportsman's Park, Busch Stadium...the list goes on and on of incredible baseball stadiums that NFL teams called home.
I wish you would've covered the engineering marvel of the old Mile High Stadium's neat hydroplaning seats. Those things allowed the stadium to be "opened up" to accommodate the baseball field. It was engineered in 1977 and worked by floating the east stands on a sheet of water. That system also never failed over the 22 years it was in service. Another thing about Mile High that was failed to be mentioned is the tradition of the Mile High "Thunder", which was possible because of the metal construction of the stands, allowing for the raucous sounds and shaky camera that is noticeable even now in their new location because it was designed to mimic the sound of the old stadium. Not to mention how the undulations of the stadium design for the new field were made to mimic the Rockies themselves. So many cool facts that were missed about my hometown stadiums.
NFL throwback is like taking a trip back to the past and a teacher giving you a history lesson that is fun I can look back and be glad I saw Texas Stadium, Giants Stadium, The Metrodome before the roof imploded and my favorite Stadium name for the Dolphins is Sunlife Stadium and Raymond James Stadium is the first NFL Stadium I ever saw
As a European, I’m stunned over how often you build new stadiums, tear them down a few years later and build another one😄 We do not get new stadiums that often over here😒 Great video though👌🏼
It's rediculous, it's about the short term profits for the owners...as usual for this country. Many Americans don't appreciate quality orhave any sentiments for old and original. ..Sad ...
The packers have been in same stadium since 1957. They just add seats and add up grades. Also they are the only fan owned nfl team. A mecca for any true nfl football fan! Go Pack Go

1:23:55 and now Lumen Field. It sits on top of where the Kingdome was, and not a ways away like the graphic would have you believe. And Safeco Field (now T-Mobile Park) the home of the Mariners MLB team was finished in 1999 and is right next to Lumen Field.
Thanks for making this available. I’m almost 69 and one of my hobbies is seeing stadiums whenever I travel. I grew up between Pittsburgh and Youngstown but whenever I would travel I would schedule my journeys around going to a ballpark. Again than you for posting this. I really enjoyed your effort.
Living in the D.C. area, there was nothing like going to RFK stadium when Washington was at their best. That place shook, such a great atmosphere. FedEx field is a morgue by comparison.
I wish there was any form of credits at all in these videos. I absolutely need the name of the song that starts at 8:33. Couldn't find it skimming through Sam Spence albums and Shazam didn't help either.
Especially when the stadium that followed was not well received thanks to the poor infrastructure and the fact that the turf was STILL awful. Almost every 9er fan I’ve met whose gone to Candlestick said it was way better than Levi Stadium. When you have a home field advantage, don’t take it away.
I still call it Ralph Wilson Stadium and my parents still call it Rich Stadium. Same with the Sabres, they still call it The Aud and I still call it HSBC Arena.
I still think either with the current stadium or their eventual new one, that they should rip off the Broncos and go with *insert sponsor* field at Ralph Wilson Memorial Stadium.

The old Mile High Stadium was made almost entirely of metal. As fans we would stomp our feet and on big plays, the noise and the vibration from the feet would shake broadcast cameras. My very first live game was against the Raiders in 1987. It was an amazing experience and I remember Denver fans cheering after touchbacks.
The old Mile High also had a Minor League Baseball team that played there... The stadiums WHOLE left field Bleacher would extend by sliding that Huge 4 level stands on this water operated Hydrologic system. That place was HUGE over 70,000
I like these types of videos where they tell you the dates and have documented footage well. Whenever I see some of these dates like in the 1920s I start to think about what was going on in that time aside from football.
Very well researched video! I'm a stadium buff so I enjoyed it very much. A couple of surprises in there. For example, I'm sure Raiders' fans couldn't name Cal's Memorial Stadium as one of their home sites. Or the Patriots playing a home game in San Diego. Great work!
You guys should do all uniforms from the beginning to the present like the chiefs old afl uniforms to the chiefs uniforms right now do that to all nfl teams
Love all the old school films showing how the game was played then. Lots of tackles and blocks that are illegal today. Head lock tackled, chop blocks, blocking in the back, etc.
You missed the brief existence of Gillette Stadium as CMGI Field. That was its initial name:) I should know, I was there before it opened and have pictures of the old CMGI logos!
Quite a few stadiums (e.g. CMGI Field, PSINet Stadiums) were caught up in the late 90s internet boom. All those companies went belly up after a few years.
I never knew the Cardinals played in Comiskey. Imagine if they stayed there. How cool would that be? The crosstown rivalry could have Bears and Cardinals fans on top of Cubs and White Sox fans!
The narration of the video stated that the NFL was looking to get out of the South Side of Chicago because the Cardinals were the second team in the Windy City for a long time. But the owners weren't going to sell and allow the team to be moved. Both Lamar Hunt and Bud Adams inquired about buying the Cards and moving them to Dallas or Houston respectively. Both were rejected and Lamar Hunt had the idea to create the AFL and one of his first calls was to Bud Adams. The Cardinals were them moved to St. Louis to keep the AFL out of the market.
I grew up in Miami, and Dad had season tickets to the Dolphins games at the Orange Bowl. I was in attendance for many memorable games, including the overtime playoff game in 1982 against the Chargers, where Miami came storming back after being down 24-0, only to lose in overtime 41-38. I also witnessed the Dolphins AFC Championship game victory over the New York Jets in 1983. The Dolphins were never the same after they moved out of the Orange Bowl into Joe Robbie Stadium. The Orange Bowl should never have been torn down, as it was a historic landmark in my opinion. So many Super Bowls and College Football Orange Bowl games that often determined National Championships. Joe Robbie Stadium has never had the same atmosphere as the Orange Bowl did. It's probably the reason why the Dolphins have sucked ever since leaving the Orange Bowl.
Did anyone else notice at 49:02 the commentator said the Chiefs instead of the cowboys although they still were on the part where the Chiefs were in Dallas and known as the Texans?
Another interesting fact about Husky Stadium hosting the Seahawks is that it holds the distinction of being the northern most stadium to permanently house an nfl team
@@randyborst7517 you're exactly right about that. Ol' Fatass (Bud Adams) moved his team Tennessee and never looked back. What's funny is many Titans fans wanted to see Bud attend Titans home games. They could have gotten Bum Phillips to take Bud out on the football field to graze.
Loved this video. No matter what city can be labeled with the loudest crowd, but as a Saints fan from the early days, I attended the Tulane Stadium Saints games and have always heard that the Superdome was the loudest. Man, in my opinion, when I first got to the SD as a fan, I couldn't hear enough noise there and it couldn't compare with Tulane Stadium and will explain why. When the Tulane Stadium was full as it usually was, if the Saints made a good play, you would hear all of the cheering noise PLUS the added effect of fans stomping their feet on the metal floor framing of stadium. It sounded like the stadium was going to come down. No one seems to remember that. If any one was a fan and there back then, please comment. But me and maybe you had heard that the Superdome was the loudest, though I never hear anything about the previous Tulane Stadium noise. Maybe the Superdome didn't have have the loudest rating as far as fan noise, but to me, Tulane Stadium was louder than any game played at the Superdome.
Thank you so much for making this, I literally enjoyed every second of it. I thought I was the only one fascinated by stadiums. I live in South Africa so I have never been to an NFL game but maybe one day I will make my dream of going to the Dog Pound come true. Thanks NFL throwback, this was awesome.

As well as all the original AFL teams before the Cowboys, as the Cowboys were created to rival Lamar Hunt's Dallas Texans. And the Eagles and Pirates, now Steelers, joined the NFL in 1933.

1) Dempsey -- like most FG kickers of the time -- was an "old style" straight-on kicker ...
"Some" tried to diminish Dempsey's accomplishment by claiming he had an "unfair advantage" kicking with a "club foot" because the tight leather kicking shoe and wide flat kicking surface was akin to a hard leather covered mallet striking the ball ... with no toes to hurt)
4) Let's not forget Dempsey's kick occurred in New Orleans at or below sea level -- wherein the ball was heavier and subject to far more atmospheric pressure & humidity than it is in Mile High Denver where Dempsey's record was "broken"

It's crazy how big these stadiums are. A real testament to modern architecture and engineering.
I miss the old Soldier field. The spaceship hasn’t aged well.
They could've done so much better, damn
They mangled it too much. All they needed to do was add to it not destroy and put up a spaceship. I hate the McCaskeys.
My favorite part is that they "renovated" so much, the stadium lost its National Historic Landmark and National Register of Historic Places designations. The columns on the lakefront still looks incredible, but the space ship hasn't aged well at all!
@@squidparty2000 Maybe replace the stands one at a time and slow enough to keep landmark status?
Current SF doesn't look that bad to me. But then again, I'm not 50-80 years old. The actual field itself, however, needs MAJOR work.
Soldier Field - the greatest stadium ruined in the saddest way.
Bruh, what are you?
Hardly the greatest stadium
Yeah they turned that shit into a spaceship

This is one of the few videos I've seen that actually acknowledges the Lions start in Portsmouth, Ohio. Really appreciate that!!! Great video!!!
Baseball even influenced some of their names:
Giants (Giants)
Redskins (Braves)
Bears (Cubs)
Lions (Tigers)
Pirates - Later Steelers (Pirates)
MLB and NFL are forever conjoined as the greatest American Sports ever.
This was such a great video! I love learning about NFL history.

Lambeau is pretty cool, wish my vikings still played outdoors like yall.
Especially when the stadium that followed was not well received thanks to the poor infrastructure and the fact that the turf was STILL awful. Almost every 9er fan I’ve met whose gone to Candlestick said it was way better than Levi Stadium. When you have a home field advantage, don’t take it away.
