      I agree whole heatedly with you, but not just Sowell. There are many many successful black men and women and they became successful the same way most other Americans with humble beginnings. It's tragic to see the way black and white culture have been characteristic by our educational system and media in my estimation. It's like soap operas. People watching that garbage think that's the way the world is and then think they are missing out trying to get to somewhere that doesn't exist except on the idiot box. Today they think reality shows are real. It must be the sodium fluoride in their tooth paste.

      As BM I fully agree with you, its just that the media doesn't want the truths and facts that he puts forward and that anyone can readily research to be out in the open.
      If that were to happen people behavior would be contradictory to what they desire them to be.

      @@davidthurston3346 on the contrary David, Sowells work is incredibly well researched. He mines the bureau of labour for accurate statistics and has trawled historical records to try and make sense of people, their motivations, culture and life outcomes. You can argue with his interpretation but not his research. The problem with his media appearances is that he has to produce soundbites in short segments and these do not often reflect the depth of his work. Again, I would suggest reading his books before casting aspersions.

      User Home not sure I follow how it’s, “Brave.” I got this account from Thomas Sowell himself. Furthermore, one way you can tell a true academic using empirical data to fuel processing power from an academic hack/grifter spouting subjective ideology? The grifter usually never turns down an invitation to an echo chamber and the real academic will always readily engage in robust opened debate. There are many tireless years of effort including network coverage of debate and thousands of pages of writings to Sowell’s credit. As some point all the deaf ears must get frustrating. It’s not until the sheep hit a critical mass that Sowell re-emerged as a prophetic academic. It must be somewhat bittersweet. I don’t find my commentary brave at all. Just curious, are you a troll?

But its true, most of his talks I"ve seen are just platitudes. Sadly, too many in the world get their political education off talking points on youtube. There is a reason that other countries laugh at americans intelligence, but its not intelligence, its just a lack of education and a willingness to believe your view is right simply because its your view. Hell, people who denounce communism all the time virtually NEVER evne look up the word in the dictionary and yet rail on about how 'it can't work', despite it never been tried. Where in the world is the economy run by workers? Its a mark of how successful propaganda is when the people who would benefit MOST from social programs are those arguing most virulently against it.
      When every talk you give is about how foolish other people's ideas are, then you don't have many ideas of your own. I"ve been looking at this guy, but I think people just like him because he is an academic who insults people, so thats great. Not that I don't often agree with him, but thats not really the issue.

      @mikearchibald744 3 роки тому

      @@nathanemslie9972 LOL, that was kind of funny that you made an argument based on a book you didn't read. First off, everything you described is what intellectuals do.
      Being known as ANTI intellectual is NOT a good thing. It means your a pundit that doens't know what they are talking about but is just pandering to the masses.
      I don't think he's that, he IS an intellectual, he's KNOWN as 'anti intellectual' by people who don't like what OTHER intellectuals say, but do like what he says.
      BOTH of those are intellectual endeavours, just like while Socrates used to argue against the Sophists for only being interested in rhetoric and not truth, but Aristophanes called Socrates the CHIEF of the sophists.
      Thats NOT his fault that the people who often mistakenly take his arguments as their own misinterpret him and use him to push their own agenda.
      But ANY intellectual will agree that its very rare that a single policy can explain entire systems. In that he's an 'idealogue' much like the people that media stick him up against for viewing drama.
      So for example he's likely right that in SOME cases a universal basic income supplement can replace the entire welfare system. However, that doesn't mean there are no individuals out there who benefit from the welfare system as it was THEN (its very different now).
      MOST intellectuals you hear about as being popular are so because people who DON"T have education see them as 'taking their side' so they use them as an academic justification for their view, usually WITHOUT having read their books.
      Charter schools are definitely a case in point as like most social programs the devil is in the details. There are ways to regulate and order ANY kind of school to get any kind of response. A public school can have much of the same programs and infrastructure as a charter school. BOTH 'sides' tend to cherry pick whats bad about the other in order to demand that ONLY 'their' system can work.
      In reality ANY system can work IF it has the proper checks and balances, funding and organization. In the end a child simply needs to learn, hell, HOME school kids are now having as good testing scores as charter AND public schools.
      Education is one area especially where the ONLY people not asked are KIDS. The one thing that ALL schools agree on, but are fought, is that individual learning with personal facilitiation seems to work best. Montessorri schools do not have 'failure rates' like other schools. So something liek charter schools is a PERFECT example of intellectual sophistry. If somebody tries to sell you ONE conclusion to fit an entire complex reality, you can be rest assured you are being sold a bill of goods.

    • @nathanemslie9972
      @nathanemslie9972 3 роки тому +1

      @@mikearchibald744 ok, but I have read Basic Economics which is heavily supplied with data. He’s only anti-intellectual in the sense that he dislikes how people who basically think about how society should run for a living don’t look at the results of affirmative action or rent control or minimum wage to evaluate if they’re actually accomplishing their purpose. He’s not anti-intellectual in the sense that he’s against intellectual pursuits. He simply wants old ineffective policies that media, academia, and politicians largely support to die. By intellectual he means people who think but don’t hold their ideas accountable when implemented.

      @Thomas Sowell What a pleasure to hear from you You Sir. Well I travel through life between 2 countries , Florida USA and Poland. Your knowledge and ability to present powerful thoughts impresses me and shows me continuous hope. At the same time sadness fills my heart, as your voice circulates only within intellectual , well read , and those who already have initiated the search for truth…..I experienced lies of communist system, it grew on me and I understood its evil quite well early on ( my teen years spent in “socialist “ Poland during the 70s ) But your power lies in the fact that You have never experienced it personally, yet you pinpoint it’s evils in such perfect manner.
      Great philosopher Kolakowski spent his entire life committed to that evil system, so many others fell for it…look at Bernie Sanders ( although my conviction is that he knows the truth..just does the lying for fame, money , popularity…sad).
