I have a ZV-1 but I’m gonna start vlogging on my new iPhone 13 pro max. Solely for the convenience alone. Love the ZV-1 but it became too much of a pain to carry a phone as well as the camera. I can handle a little drop in quality just for the convenience factor. Makes me feel more free to be creative.
Hey Eric, that’s a really well made point and I agree - for things like convenience and having one device for everything the iPhone is king. Thank you for a great review! My question: can this camera record a 30 minutes long video with 100-250 fps with normal speed and sound so that I can slow down some chosen moments afterwards?
Great to hear from you and great thoughts Douglas. I think a zv2 can be a killer with: slightly wider FoV; refined active steadyshot (might not need to be much better if wider fov makes crop less impactful); improved battery life. 4k60 isn’t key for me but I know a lot of folks who prioritise it so I think there’s right. I reckon those 3 or 4 things would be a very strong product. We will se what they do. Not sure they expected the zv1 to be as big if a hit as it has been 😂
Iphone: if u want more sharp/bright/saturated Camera: if u want more realistic/immersive/feels Nice comparison, thank you! Id bring an iphone for every day shoots n a camera for more cinematic/professional shoots
Cheers Mark, spotted some of your stuff in my recommended feed - you’re killing it man; great stuff and impress growth. Well done! I kept on watching videos on those two ( on my iphone 13 ) and i gotta say it must be first video where I was blown away how much better zv1 actually looks
I will be using Faukeh as a term from now on, to go with Kasey's (Camera Conspiracies) Toneh term. Not a big fan of high end mobile phones TBH, as I find phones ergonomically unpleasant to use as a camera and the idea of spending $$$$ on a phone just doesn't work for me. Loving the ZV-1 and ZV-E10 as a camera pairing that fits almost all of my needs
Haha - if i ever get 10% as good as Kasey I’ll be happy, love that guy:) But hopefully faukeh can be my legacy 😂 Totally agree with your analysis Panzer, the ergonomics are a killer even if everything else were the same, the other issues just compound things for me. Great to hear from you as ever and hope you’re having a great weekend 💪

Great video comparison thanks alot 😌 Can anybody suggest what will be the best choice for making dance videos for Instagram reels and UA-cam? iPhone will be more user friendly than sony ZV -1 right ? And I don’t think so while coming to the quality it doesn’t have any much differences 😇 I have iPhone XR now and I am thinking to upgrade to iPhone 13 pro . But still confused 😅😂😂
OMG I just realised how low your subscribers are, wow. Take it from me, complete amateur, you'll take off, soon! Great video though the ZV1 did seem really dark, especially earlier on. Was that setting it on non-face priority?
Rob, thanks for the kind words - hopefully there can be some more growth, but I gotta earn it: only entitled to what I work for, right:) 💪 The zv1 being a bit darker is actually to do with how HLG behaves on both. The iPhone seems to expose a bit more flatly so when you pull things down to standard dynamic range the mid tones are comparatively brighter. The zv1 seems to have a bigger difference between darkest and lightest, so when I mapped it into SDR those mid tones seem a bit lower. Easy to fix with colour grading but I wanted to show the ‘in camera’ differences as much as possible. Hope that clarifies a bit:)
Great video. It seems to me that the Sony is a bit on the dark side. The Canon I use also is naturally on the darker side which I tend to fix during upload to Lightroom. Great comparison. Obviously the iphone can also be used as a eerrr phone. But who does that these days! Keep the vids coming. Great work. 👍
Thanks HD, really appreciate it:) The slightly darker look is to do with how the 2 devices treat HDR (HLG) video. The iPhone seems to expose a bit flatter so when I map into standard dynamic range colour space the mid tones are comparatively brighter. The zv1 seems to expose with more space between highlights and mid tones so when I map into standard dynamic range colour space by pulling down the highlights those mid tones are comparatively a bit darker. Very easy to fix with simple colour grading as you say: only reason I didn’t do that here is to try and show the unadjusted in camera result as much as possible:)
Hey Shaun, The slightly darker look is to do with how the 2 devices treat HDR (HLG) video. Very easy to adjust with simple colour grading: only reason I didn’t do that here is to try and show the unadjusted in camera result as much as possible:)
Thanks for the explanation. It seems that the iPhone requires less post production, and will be better for the amateurs to produce bright and clear videos without much hassle. It's really a game-changer, IMHO.
It’s a mixed bag Shaun; if you’re shooting both in HLG/HDR then that may be true, but unless you’re editing and publishing in HDR you’ll still need to adapt things into standard colour space-info on the ways I do that here if helpful: ua-cam.com/video/88lUbO7hOA4/v-deo.html If you use a different picture profile on the ZV1 you could potentially do zero post production. The main reason I used HLG on both here is because the iPhone markets the HDR video capability as such a significant feature. All worth bearing in mind:) You can definitely set up both to shoot in SDR with zero post production so I wouldn’t get too hung up on that as a decision driver on its own. Hope that helps explain a bit further:)
Great video. I nearly bought the 13 but went with zv1, why? This is something not talked about but Apple have software locked all repairs so if anything happens to the iPhone 13 camera, the only repair is via Apple and that is going to be very expensive. I will get a new phone someday and it will be great but I’m not upgrading just for the camera because of this reason,
There’s some strong insight in those words Joe, thanks for sharing. I jumped on that iPhone upgrade program-after working out all the costs it makes sense for me and they throw in Apple care and automatic trade in. If I didn’t have those safety nets I wouldn’t have upgraded for the cameras and the reasons you mention. I’ve gotta say as well: side by side I just much prefer the zv1 results! Thanks for watching, consider subbing if you enjoyed and have a great day 👍
Hey Mark, it’s mainly because I’m a sucker for slow motion 😂 120 to 24 and 60 to 24 gives me more than 100 or 50 to 25. It’s the shutter speed rather than frame rate that primarily drives light flicker so at 1/50 I have no issues:) There’s a bit more explanation in one of the chapters of this one if helpful: ua-cam.com/video/sGS17Cy5AOE/v-deo.html Hope that helps and thst you’re having a great weekend 👏👍
@@dbvares8745 thanks Dave - I never thought of it from that perspective - I'll try a few jobs as 24 and see how I go - I do a lot of stage work - it'll be interesting to see if I run into problems.

Hey Sudip, it’s a good point. You can get the zv1 wider with the Ulanzi or other wide angle lens adapters but it would still be somewhere between 24 and the 13mm equivalent of the iPhone ultra wide. Strange, you and everyone else think the Sony is better. I thought the iPhone was better. The picture is brighter and clearer, audio was more natural. Sony audio sounded tinny. iPhone stability was better. Apps to correct the sony stabilization crop the picture. Film speed and bokeh is a negligible factor, I’m not filming for Warner Brothers. This is a great video though, thanks for the information. Looks like I don’t need another camera. 😄
You’re right Anatoly, it makes a big difference for the zv-e10 especially. Gotta remember to mention that more specifically! Thanks for watching, consider subbing if you enjoyed and have a great weekend 👍
thanks for the comparison. i'm pretty sure a 1080p resolution means the image has 1920 pixels horizontally by 1080 vertically), so its considered 2k., only half of 4k. maths :)

Hey CJ, the main camera does ok, but the other cameras not so much and the main cam looks worse the larger the image - at least that’s what I saw in the edit. For me the zv1 is better still, but the 13 has definitely improved significantly since the 12. It’s subjective though m-if the iPhone is better for your taste then that’s the right answer:)
Yes, the iPhone does other stuff besides shoot video, but the ZV-1 is [obviously] a better deal when it comes to video. And it's cheaper than the iPhone. Plus, to my eyes, the "cinematic" mode on the iPhone 13 reminds me too much of soap operas. Especially Apple's demo video of this mode. In the end, the ZV-1 is one of the best "intros" into video filmmaking your mom could ask for. Do you really want a new 10-speed bike for Christmas? Or a ZV-1. A no brainer to me.
As ever ATF, we are very much on the same page. I’m in the Apple ecosystem and so having an iPhone is helpful but the ‘pro’ isn’t for videography and filmmaking yet. At the things I like to try and do:) And totally agree. The zv1 was my first proper camera and was the catalyst for all the learning I’ve done since, cresting this channel and surviving total isolation with nothing much to do in lockdown! It will always have a special place in my mind 😂 Hope you’re doing well my friend 💪
@@dbvares8745 Thanks. I am working on a script for a short film, where I am the sole character. (Keeping it simple.) In the meantime, I am rocking the A7C as I wait for the A7iv to get released. From what I've heard so far, I think the A7iv will give me the 10-bit I want for grading and dynamic range without the cost of the FX3. We shall see.

There is a MASSIVE elephant in the room anytime that you are comparing a camera to a phone - MANY PHONES ARE NOT CAPABLE OF SHOOTING AT A LOCKED FRAME RATE. ie your videos are always 30.65 frames per second AVERAGE. It's a HUGE problem when mixing footage on a common timeline.
Hey Jeff, good to hear from you. Very interesting stuff - I’ve not found this with the iPhone and (thankfully!) footage was easy enough to edit aside from the fact the iPhone seems to do 24.00 while the zv1 does the more common 23.976fps. What smartphones have you found the variable frame rate issue with?
@@dbvares8745 every single Android I have tried. I have not tried it with iPhone yet BUT it is very common. Smartphones record VFR (Variable frame rate).
Interesting stuff; I haven’t had an android since the original HTC desire 😂- I’m going to have to borrow a friends and watch out for this. Thanks for sharing the insight and hope you have a good day 💪

While phones do an amazing job considering what they are (a short film I shot on iPhone XR: ua-cam.com/video/r-Agvifgaes/v-deo.html ) phones are just the wrong form factor for enjoyable camerawork, plus they over-sharpen like crazy and give a distinctly phone-look. I have the ZV1 and recently purchased the ZV-E10 and love both of them. The ZV1 is a bit small for my liking, and I prefer using the ZV-E0, however, the stacked sensor on the ZV1 makes it punch above its weight.
AJ, some really nice and insightful stuff as ever. Goldfish is a very cool piece of work and testament to the results skill + iPhone can deliver. Particular liked the wineglass dancing shots and some of the surprisingly good low light bits. Totally agree on both ergonomics and phone look too. On the ZV1 I have a small rig cafe thst adds some bulk and a larger grip; not a game changer but might improve your experience a shade. Glad to hear that pairing is treating you well so far though:) Take care and have a great day 👏
@@dbvares8745 Glad you liked Goldfish. I have a SmallRig L bracket on the RX100 VII and it is a big improvement but refrained from using one on the ZV1 as I have the Ulanzi wide angle lens on it, which is already heavy, and an additional SmallRig bracket will add too much extra weight as I don’t want to use a heavier gimbal.
Don't buy the Sony zv 1..I have that camera it's useless for vlogging..the stabiliser on it is useless..my old fine is better.. anyone want the Sony have mines for half price 😅

Fantastic review! Very comprehensive, detailed, easy to understand and fun. You’ve just helped me decide to rather keep my iPhone 11 Pro (instead of upgrading to the iPhone 13 Pro), where in turn I’ll just buy a Sony ZV1. Oh yeah, I’ve subbed !!
Goldman, thanks so much for sharing the really kind feedback - hugely appreciated:) And welcome on board - awesome to have you here and let me know if you have any Qs or suggestions for future videos!
great video...thank you so much!!!
I do enjoy that aspect too but for the way I shoot I find myself running into limitations around what I’d like to do a lot too 😂
Thanks for sharing the thoughtful comment and for watching, consider subbing if you enjoyed and have a great day 👏
Subbed!

Hey bud. I just wanted to say thank you for your amazing content. Keep on going, you are definitely underrated and I definitely see you becoming one of the most popular camera related UA-camrs in the future!
Really appreciate the kind words Sholps. It's an absolute grind sometimes to get content out each week and try to make it good. Day job has been relentless recently and I've moved house and inherited a bucnh of problems I;ve slowly had to resolve, so in that context super nice comments like this really go a long way. Great video again, ho God if I could only make calls with my zv1 XD, now I just need a review zv1 vs Rocky Balboa 😌, greetings from Chile friend.

Thank you for a great review! My question: can this camera record a 30 minutes long video with 100-250 fps with normal speed and sound so that I can slow down some chosen moments afterwards?
Hey Irene, I answered this one where you asked on the zv1 slowmo vid:)
Very good comparison my friend 👏 best cinematic greetings from germany
And danke schön mein freund from the UK! (Probably butchered the grammar there 😂). Great to hear from you as ever SF and hope you’re doing well 👍
Great video again!!
Sony could easily take over the whole market by releasing a ZV-2, giving us 4K 60FPS and a slightly wider FoV. Right???
Great to hear from you and great thoughts Douglas. I think a zv2 can be a killer with: slightly wider FoV; refined active steadyshot (might not need to be much better if wider fov makes crop less impactful); improved battery life. 4k60 isn’t key for me but I know a lot of folks who prioritise it so I think there’s right. I reckon those 3 or 4 things would be a very strong product. We will se what they do. Not sure they expected the zv1 to be as big if a hit as it has been 😂
Improved stabe, wider angle and 4k 60fps would be on my ZV-2 wish list. 👌🏼
and IBIS
Iphone: if u want more sharp/bright/saturated
Camera: if u want more realistic/immersive/feels
Nice comparison, thank you! Id bring an iphone for every day shoots n a camera for more cinematic/professional shoots
Nice one - a lot of people wondering about this comparison. 👍
Cheers Mark, spotted some of your stuff in my recommended feed - you’re killing it man; great stuff and impress growth. Well done! I need to watch more when I have the (somewhat mythical) spare time 😂
I was shocked how much worse I found the iPhone when I put them side by side. Truly I’ve become a camera hipster 😂
@@dbvares8745 haha - me too, man. Phones just aren’t for me anymore when it comes to video. Love your vids - hilarious and informative!! 👍👍

I kept on watching videos on those two ( on my iphone 13 ) and i gotta say it must be first video where I was blown away how much better zv1 actually looks
Thank you for this
Good video like always !
Thanks BCA, great to see you and appreciate the kind words as always:)
Hope you’re doing well 💪
Cool video I have both iPhone is way more user friendly and the stink battery on the zv1 is also a huge disadvantage
Nice 1 DB 👍😎 although the i phone quality looks a bit over cooked lol if you know what i mean 😳
That was extremely strong pun work UC; I heartily approve. And more generally agree 😂
Great to see you as ever and hope you’re doing well 👏
I will be using Faukeh as a term from now on, to go with Kasey's (Camera Conspiracies) Toneh term. Not a big fan of high end mobile phones TBH, as I find phones ergonomically unpleasant to use as a camera and the idea of spending $$$$ on a phone just doesn't work for me. Loving the ZV-1 and ZV-E10 as a camera pairing that fits almost all of my needs
Haha - if i ever get 10% as good as Kasey I’ll be happy, love that guy:) But hopefully faukeh can be my legacy 😂
Totally agree with your analysis Panzer, the ergonomics are a killer even if everything else were the same, the other issues just compound things for me.
Great to hear from you as ever and hope you’re having a great weekend 💪
Sir pls help me to buy one iam cofused to take one between zv1 and zv e10. My priority is to take videos ondoor n oitdoor video film making.... Iam just a beginner... Pls help to choose one.... Mostly taking portrait(bokeh)videos
Great video comparison thanks alot 😌
Can anybody suggest what will be the best choice for making dance videos for Instagram reels and UA-cam?
iPhone will be more user friendly than sony ZV -1 right ? And I don’t think so while coming to the quality it doesn’t have any much differences 😇
I have iPhone XR now and I am thinking to upgrade to iPhone 13 pro .
But still confused 😅😂😂
teşkkür ederim fazydalı bilgilerden dolayı
OMG I just realised how low your subscribers are, wow. Take it from me, complete amateur, you'll take off, soon! Great video though the ZV1 did seem really dark, especially earlier on. Was that setting it on non-face priority?
Rob, thanks for the kind words - hopefully there can be some more growth, but I gotta earn it: only entitled to what I work for, right:) 💪
The zv1 being a bit darker is actually to do with how HLG behaves on both.
Great work. 👍
Thanks HD, really appreciate it:)
The slightly darker look is to do with how the 2 devices treat HDR (HLG) video.
Is there anything wrong with the Sony ZV-1? It seems so dark compared to the iPhone.
Hey Shaun,
The slightly darker look is to do with how the 2 devices treat HDR (HLG) video.
It’s a mixed bag Shaun; if you’re shooting both in HLG/HDR then that may be true, but unless you’re editing and publishing in HDR you’ll still need to adapt things into standard colour space-info on the ways I do that here if helpful: ua-cam.com/video/88lUbO7hOA4/v-deo.html
If you use a different picture profile on the ZV1 you could potentially do zero post production. The main reason I used HLG on both here is because the iPhone markets the HDR video capability as such a significant feature. All worth bearing in mind:)
You can definitely set up both to shoot in SDR with zero post production so I wouldn’t get too hung up on that as a decision driver on its own.
Hope that helps explain a bit further:)
Thank u 🙏💚⭐️
You’re very welcome AGePe, glad it was helpful:)

Thanks for watching, consider subbing if you enjoyed and have a great day 👍
Im surprised your using 24fps in the UK Dave. Don't you get problems with flickering lights, Ive always stayed at 25fps.
Hey Mark, it’s mainly because I’m a sucker for slow motion 😂 120 to 24 and 60 to 24 gives me more than 100 or 50 to 25.
It’s the shutter speed rather than frame rate that primarily drives light flicker so at 1/50 I have no issues:)
There’s a bit more explanation in one of the chapters of this one if helpful: ua-cam.com/video/sGS17Cy5AOE/v-deo.html
Hope that helps and thst you’re having a great weekend 👏👍
@@dbvares8745 thanks Dave - I never thought of it from that perspective - I'll try a few jobs as 24 and see how I go - I do a lot of stage work - it'll be interesting to see if I run into problems.

If zv 1 was atleast 16mm ffev ..
24 is too tight for my taste
The most competition would already be over..
Hey Sudip, it’s a good point. You can get the zv1 wider with the Ulanzi or other wide angle lens adapters but it would still be somewhere between 24 and the 13mm equivalent of the iPhone ultra wide. Either way if it’s a dealbreaker then your analysis is exactly right 👍

The Sony zv1 looks more pleasing to the eye straight out of the camera in my opinion
Totally agree Dan, that’s my take as well.

thanks for the comparison. i'm pretty sure a 1080p resolution means the image has 1920 pixels horizontally by 1080 vertically), so its considered 2k., only half of 4k. maths :)

Why every video footage on the ZV1 looks greyish / foggy / washed?
Sony will up the game for ZV1 II or whatever they call the second gen, now that they equipped the Xperia Pro-I with the 2.4 micron pixel size sensor.
Hey Hock, I think that’s a good prediction-Sony will want to keep some differentiation between products to sell to as many types of user as possible.
Thanks for the thoughtful insights, consider subbing if you enjoyed and have a great day 💪
They should put an APS-c sensor on next zv1 with 10% larger body.
Shabeer, that would be pretty badass, right? I can see it happening down the line but maybe not with a ZV2. I’ll be curious to see, but it’s a cool idea!
Thanks for watching, consider subbing if you enjoyed and have a great weekend 👏
Hmm, am I tripping or does the iphone seem a lot better for low light. Will have to rewatch this vid on my PC later
@@dbvares8745 I'll take another look, thanks for the reply and perspective!
At the things I like to try and do:)
And totally agree. The zv1 was my first proper camera and was the catalyst for all the learning I’ve done since, cresting this channel and surviving total isolation with nothing much to do in lockdown! It will always have a special place in my mind 😂
Hope you’re doing well my friend 💪
@@dbvares8745 Thanks. I am working on a script for a short film, where I am the sole character. (Keeping it simple.) Aside from my goofy experiment in my short, "Demon Gold", made purely for practicing my shooting, editing, VFX skills, I want to make this next short more serious and dramatic. In the meantime, I am rocking the A7C as I wait for the A7iv to get released. From what I've heard so far, I think the A7iv will give me the 10-bit I want for grading and dynamic range without the cost of the FX3. We shall see.

Funny, as the iPhone shots always seem brighter to me and the ZV1 murky. Or is that just the....?
If iphone add a small secondary screen then it is gold..else no use for vlogging.

Thanks for sharing the insight and hope you have a good day 💪
Everything's far too sharp with the Iphone. Artificially sharp. Doesn't look good tbh
Ishaan, totally agree. Some folks prefer it but for me it looks so artificial and the opposite of filmic or cinematic!
Thanks for watching, consider subbing if you enjoyed and have a great day 👍
While phones do an amazing job considering what they are (a short film I shot on iPhone XR: ua-cam.com/video/r-Agvifgaes/v-deo.html ) phones are just the wrong form factor for enjoyable camerawork, plus they over-sharpen like crazy and give a distinctly phone-look.
Glad to hear that pairing is treating you well so far though:)
Take care and have a great day 👏
@@dbvares8745 Glad you liked Goldfish.
Lol SJW 😂😂😂😂😂
