We’d be speaking about Delpo in the same breath as the big 3 right now if he didn’t get injured. One of the greatest lost talents in tennis history. As least he has this moment to look back on.
Tells you a lot about his ability that even _with_ all the injuries he was able to keep coming back to each finals of Slams and Masters, win titles, win bronze and silver Olympic medals. Really is such a shame how much injuries impacted his career.
it is really, that federer won roland garros wimbledon and australia after. Beat djokovic in semifinal with the shot of his life. How could Delpo took this was epic

If he could have walked without any major injuries, he would have peaked around 2013 or 2014. With an unparalleled all-time great forehand and the most solid backhand on tour, he would have been the GOAT hard hitter.
This loss felt like a turning point for Federer because he didn't really dominate the game anymore after this season. This match should/would have been his 3rd Slam of '09, but it ended his season on a damper. With this loss, he never won another US Open after '08 and sporadically only won a total 5 majors over the next decade with his rivals Djokovic, Nadal, and Murray imposing themselves into the 2010s. After '09, the only year Federer was able to win even 2 Slams in the same year was 2017 (the AO and Wimbledon).
@@shervintravels2628 Worst part is, you can clearly feel he is in control of the match, till suddenly he decides to prove his forehand is better or something, he can't, and then loses his mental because of a late challenge. Sometimes tennis is about playing in a certain way that dismantles the opponent rather than overpowering him and show off, and Rog forgot about that in this match. Not that I am mad about it, because IMO Delpo deserved it.
@@mariodoblado668 you’re absolutely right. Later on Federer always adjusted his game to defeat his opponent. But here I guess he was too proud to accept that this 20 y.o was outhitting him on his forehand.
Well, according to Mouratoglou, Delpo had one of the best double backhands of all time. So I would say Federer was simply outplayed by Delpo in this game.
Federer’s pride cost him the match. He shouldve sliced and diced and dropshot the big guy to death but he insisted on going for the forehand and kept getting burned
I think it’s pretty obvious what he’s saying but ok. Usually extended highlights show long form highlights of the entire match, they don’t just skip entire sets.
I remember watching this live and thinking at the time that no one could have a forehand that big! He just leveled the ball and hit it fairly flat. To me, it was reminiscent of Pete Sampras’s forehand when he would really pull the trigger.
I remember watching this as a kid, Federer was my guy, hated seeing him lose. But I remember thinking… Fed, this guys forehand is absolutely destroying you mate stay away from it lol
Nah, Federer vs Nadal 2008 Wimbledon was the turning point aside the next gen being hardwr to beat from the baseline than the likes of Roddick or hewitt
What a loser you are, Federer. You lost a match you won (first set 6-2 and second 5-4 with a serve for the second set where you are 30-0. Novak dismantled this Argentine charlatan from an easy 3-0.
Federer missed a crucial forehand at 3-3 in the 2nd set tiebreaker to give the set, then loses two crucial forehands again in the fourth set tiebreaker when he was 3 points away from a 6th consecutive US Open title. Wimbledon 2008: Federer commits 8 forehand unforced errors in the last 2 games, after being 2 points away from a 6th consecutive Wimbledon title. Roger´s forehand may have given him a lot, probably the best forehand ever, but at the same time took from him a lot more glory, victories that he should have had.
Its not the forehand to blame my friend..he was not that strong mentally was his problem against his big rivals..and this final against del Potro.. this was the reason he had so many lost break points
This was the match that should have made Federer move to the bigger frame and rework his back hand. But Roger was extremely stubborn with 15 grand slam titles despite loss after loss to Nadal at Wimbledon and the French between 2009 and 2016. The bigger frame, Edberg in his corner, and the neo backhand enabled him to win 2 slams in 2017! It’s a lesson that nothing fails like success. If Federer did not have 15 grand slams, he would’ve made those changes in 2010, not 2016
You make it sound as if Del Po had a choice. He was plagued with various injuries to different parts of his body over the years. He did his best, under the circumstances.
man, rewatching this makes me mad/sad. Del Po should be sitting right now with 5-8 slams. And a lot of those would have been Djokers...this guy always was a bad match up for Djoker.
I agree. Certainly he would have won more GS titles on hard courts, and possibly at Wimbledon, where I remember a ferocious battle with Nadal in a semi final, I think it was.

Delpo beat peak Fed in a slam final… Don’t ever forget that!! 🇦🇷🏆
This was the biggest upset in a final still to this day i think🤔, Delpo was just a kid, against a 15 time GS champion
