I just saw Yussef live in Seattle. He and the whole band went extremely hard, and he was smiling the whole time, really having fun. I realized that musicians like Yussef love to play so much that they just always go 100%, I don't think he has a lower gear.
Yussef is an incredible player. One of my favourite tracks of his is with Tom Misch - Tidal Wave. An amazing break-up song, where the drumming is so expressive and emotive. That whole album is amazing.
"Yussef Kamaal - Strings of Light" is the first track I heard him on - and one of the best in my opinion. Absolutely killing break beats.

I think such a huge part of Yussef's sound and time feel is the way he accents his hi hat patterns -- you could almost strip everything but his right hand away and feel the groove. He kind of blends these macro movements in his arms/shoulders with the micro movements with his fingers and his drop/catch in a way that grooves so hard.
I think Spaven is another 10/10 guy at this, you can watch him change his right hand technique even within a single bar to shift the dynamics and tone of each hit to get the groove and feel he wants. In a lot of ways it seems influenced by loops/sequenced drum patterns, which makes sense since both of them take a lot of influence from jungle/dnb breaks.
I agree 100%. The part of the drum beats that he was missing was Yussef's high hat accenting.

first time i listened to Yussef Dayes was from the album "Black Focus", freakin' love that album. and it also got me wanting to play Fusion Jazz lol.
He's easily my favourite drummer. Soooo inspirational.
Nate...there's a track you need to check out called blacked out. It's Yusef dayes and alfa mist. It has the nastiest drumming, and it's my favorite track of his.
I caught Yussef at the Newport (RI) Jazz Festival this past August. Incredible show. He can work off straight jazz beats, as well as, his signature grooves.
He walked around the festival the day before he played. I was seated in front of a Jamaican food truck. He walked right by me heading for the truck. I had a chance to say hello. He was a humble, soft-spoken guy.
The best Yussef Dayes playing I've heard is on the strings of light live performance at the jazz cafe back in 2016, absolutely insane. Also, if you're going to check out more drummers from the UK lke this, I'd definitely reccomend Ayo Salawu and Morgan Simpson, both insane drummers with unique approaches.

every couple of years i see a new drummer that completely blows my mind. Youssef is that type of a drummer imo. Amazing drummer - completely fresh ideas and approach.
He was recommended to me like 3 years ago. At this time he had Love Is The Message on YT and I was just hooked. I'd say his style is one I just naturally am striving for since I picked up the sticks.
Yussef and all the drummers you mentioned here are great players.

so happy to finally see yussef dayes on the channel. i may or may not have been one of those who suggested him to you? can't remember. had his album with tom misch on spin since last summer, ever since i heard him play on ben howard's last record i was hooked, he's quickly become one of my favorites

To me, he captures the knowledge of a lot of electronic music out as well as the sampledelic classic funk grooves, and great knowledge of various hip hop grooves coming off is hands.

My introduction to Yussef Dayes came by way of the UA-cam rabbit trail while chasing down videos that came from another 80/20 analysis that mentioned Hiatus Kaiyote, which is weird stuff in the coolest way. I like it. 👍

Great show Nate thank you, we like to hear what you think about things because we like you and your thoughts about drumming. I do like yuseff too and have enjoyed his unique style. I have heard him say that he hates to play the same thing twice which i can hear in his playing as its not a groove he plays as such its an organic groove which seems to breath as he is playing it. His drumming on the track " what kind of music " is a good example of this and has a great start and build up to when he puts his hands deep into his pocket. ( metaphor metaphor )

Just noticed something interesting , having the mic stand right in front of you , forces your hands into specfic movements, this might be a great way to train peoples hands to keep strokes down and hands not interfering with each other !! Just a thought !!

Hi, I follow the channel, thanks for everything that you share here. I wanted to ask you the difference between licks, fills and grooves. I think you mention licks more when talking about jazz, and fills for rock. I understand the groove to be the main rhythmic theme of a song, and fills as features or changes that mark structure points of the song. Licks is where I am a bit lost, in how are they different from fills.

Nate, this was much cooler than a typical reaction video (which are usually pretty boring). If you wanted to go deeper you could maybe turn each groove (or select grooves) into mini lessons. Nice one tho!

I think it's the sound of his recordings, weight, and size of hi hats that contribute to his sound, Nate. Your hats are pretty sloshy and your room is wide open. Can't remember if you've done a thing on Louis Cole?
Some commenters have recommended the album Strings of Light with the duo Yussef Kamal. I can only second that. Not only great drumming, but great music overall, definitely a style of its own. "Not a lot of pentatonics there" as a friend said.
the point of Yussef is that awkward, hard, british, almost painful looking articulation. All muscle, sweat, my first impression was rigid, but I appreciate that now. While II am not on Instagram, I did see him live a few occasions. One was his band in a double bill with Glasper in a club here in Berlin. The essence of his playing can be boiled down to the audience's reaction: Glasper: slight head nodding, - despite Glasper's repeated requests - zero people dancing. And this is not to judge this or that being better. It simply shows you that Yussef comes from a british club background, the music is not complex or revolutionary jazz, its not supposed to be. He sounds and (his technique) looks to me like someone who was a kid not long time ago, loving and feeling UK club music, rigid hard stuff that lives from strict repetitions, bold statements.Having lived and worked mostly in NYC and Berlin, I would say that in Europe(and let's be generous and count the UK in for the moment), eletronic music, in all it's history, distinctions, style, form, how you dance to it etc.. - it's a lot more engrained in our culture, and serious, alive. It is a living organism, DJ's try out new sounds and textures on their shows, make or break trends. Now, out of respect for every instrumentalist's skills - I would say, this is a little less like a great horn player who burns latenight at Small's and everyone getting hip to his s***t, but electronic music is rather moving like street fashion, certain bold statements, patterns, textures - certain things becoming evidently magnetic. And while Damion Reid was certainly killing it, and is a much more refined and developed drummer, Yussef is doing a whole different thing. It's club language. He speaks that really fluently. The only guy on the US scene who understands that language who I know of would be Deantoni. Last show I saw Yussef at was the Berlin Jazz festival, sold out and people hoping to get in lining around the block.

Yussef's style (specifically on black focus) can be traced from Kaidi Tatham's productions. If Dilla has Chris Dave, Kaidi has Yussef. 😀

I appreciate all constructive criticism. Goal wasn't to play it perfectly, but to challenge myself to learn it as best I could in real time, with the cameras rolling, mistakes and all. (Partly so the audience could watch me discovering Yussef.) I may double back and make a video about specific beats, in which case I'll make sure to nail all the details ;)
