    The man who made this series deserves enormous credit both for passing the RM training at 55 years of age and also for filming alongside the active service marines in a war zone. Mr Terrill, you are a credit to the Corps.

    • @JammyDodger45
      @JammyDodger45 3 роки тому +5

      Just to be accurate CT didn't 'pass RM training'.
      Kudos for what he did do but it wasn't training.

      I understood he had just passed the four Commando tests until I heard reference (in the film I believe) to him completing the entire course. Perhaps you are more familiar with Mr Terrill’s achievements. I have to say that just passing the 30-miler at his age is significant; never mind all four.

    • @JammyDodger45
      @JammyDodger45 3 роки тому +6

      @@Sam-ch9mn - totally, hence I say kudos to him.
      But at the risk of causing a 💩 storm on here, the Commando Tests aren't really that difficult, a fit robust club athlete could pass them (with the appropriate training on the obstacles etc).
      'Test Week' is just a hurdle to get over but I doubt it features in any Recruits 'top 5 hardest weeks at Lympstone'.
      The hard aspect is doing it after 7 months of relentless thrashings, sleep deprivation, calorie deficit and carrying the inevitable stresses, strains, webbing burns, blisters etc that you pick up along the way.

    • @Sam-ch9mn
      @Sam-ch9mn 3 роки тому +6

      @@JammyDodger45 That’s an interesting observation. I think you make a good point. It’s not just about completing the tests, it’s the development of mind and body - and a big dollop of self discovery - to get to the point where they take place.
      Very fit and robust athletes, as you say, may have the physical strength to complete them, as Chris Terrill demonstrated. But of course RM recruits are not becoming athletes; their fitness is only a part of the criteria for passing out. It’s a very long time since I stood there and received my beret at the end of the 30-miler and regrettably, possibly through age, I can’t remember that moment. However, like most, I have never before or since been tested, physically at least, to such an extent.
      I think Terrill’s achievement is much more than gaining (an honorary) green lid - his skill and bravery in the front line filming in Afghanistan et al shows a high level of commitment to the Corps.

      @@Sam-ch9mn - Hello Royal.
      I've met, but don't 'know' CT but I'm mates with 'Ginge' who said he really is a good guy, his follow on piece from Afghanistan was excellent.
      A couple of those guys who featured in the Training programme are no longer with us and it was good to see he didn't try and exploit that with a schmaltzy follow on.
      I did the 30 miler on my Junior Command Course (I don't know if they did that in your day) and it was remarkable how little I remembered of it from training even though it was only a few years before!
      I did the other Tests a couple more times as a Cpl on Recruit Training and it was clear how the NODs fitness was different to ours in the sense that they were just immune to pain, whatever you threw at them they just got on with it whereas we were (generally) 'fitter' and carrying more muscle after a few years of PT on a Commando Unit.
      I came out a few years ago (after almost 20yrs) and as much as I miss it every day it really is a young man's game!

Even though I only met him 2 or 3 times, i feel a close connection to him because he is buried in the same cemetery as my mum. As an Indian worked in uk for long time, I saw how Brits are sincere about what they do. We are all living safer life because of Marienes like these. Much love and respect for them. However I only wish that all Brits understand the sacrifices these marines and their families did for their people and don't make mistakes by inviting trouble at their homeland. None of us can afford to do the same mistake.

I have a hot shower every day, have central heating and air conditioning, and get angry when traffic is bad, or power goes off for a couple hours. As a U.S. citizen, I notice a vast distinction between the Royal Marines and our soldiers. Even though the training is similar, I notice a vast distinction especially dealing with locals. While, yes, our soldiers played with kids and gave out candy and whatnot, the overall demeanor of the Royal Marine's is much calmer, much less intimidating, much more professional. Massive respect for both armies, as I was never able to go and fight due to medical issues.

    • @chrisholland7367
      @chrisholland7367 Рік тому +3

      The training period is much longer. This is because the RMs are also commandos.
      This role was originally for the army during ww2, but as the war progressed so the Marines gradually took that role on.
      They were formed on the 28th of October 1664 as the Duke of Albanys Maratime regiment of foot. To be deployed in his Majesty's fleet(King Charles 2nd)to counter the threat from Netherlands.
      Recruit training last for 32 weeks and for potential officers 64 weeks.

      This is not the army though, this is the Royal Marines Sir. But yes, massive amounts of respect from me towards these men, They deserved that green beret 100%. I only now wish I can endure the 32 weeks of, well, hell. And respect to Tom. His death was not in vain. He died with the Royal Marines, and probably was proud to die wearing that uniform, and serving his country to the best of his ability. God bless him, and any other servicemen who has died fighting for our countries.

    "The war in Afghanistan could rage for the next 30yrs". I've only just started watching this series in 2024....and im ashamed and disgusted how it turned out. How many of these men and others died to free this country of tyranny....just to hand it back to the same/worse barbarians. How many Afghans suffered the consequences of post war repercussions.
    If we do not have a positive Endgame....we shouldnt be getting involved in the first place.
    The US learnt that in Vietnam....and still make the same mistakes.

      +Frank Watson If you have sports induced asthma you can work it out with sport do long distance running and also shuttle runs this will introduce cold air to the lungs so it gets used to it like a small form of adaptation and it will stop inflaming so bad or at all, if you work hard and don't stop your physical work it should say away but if you stop for a couple of weeks it can come back a bit or fully. I have no exsperance of this working with normal asthma . / Dont go full out on the first couple of weeks in not fit it wont do you any good/ IM NOT A DOCTER BUT I HAVE HELPED WORK OUT A PROBLEM WITH MY LUNGS A WHILE BACK FROM LUNG BUSTING WORK NOT ASMTHA

    Don't know what time of day it was that it was 30⁰C(86⁰F), guess it wasn't summertime, when temps can exceed 50⁰C. It's incredible that these guys can acclimate to the 50⁰C-plus temps in Afghanistan, and still remain combat effective in body armor and full kit. I worked in Phoenix when it was 110⁰F, and I can't begin to imagine the physical conditioning necessary to be able to go long distances over rough terrain, at altitude even, while carrying ALL that weight. And then to be able to function at optimum levels of weapons proficiency and land navigation while keeping hydrated is nothing short of incredible. No matter what the amount, these guys are def NOT paid enough for the jobs they did and the risks they took. Then couple the low pay with ammo and equipment shortages... Ugh...
    These guys are the heart and soul. The world quickly forgot that this war in Afghanistan was a HUMANITARIAN mission. It was about the most destitute of the world's poorest peoples, getting relief from a power hungry, corrupt, terrorist organization, sponsored by the most unstable, nuclear capable state, trying to topple a fledgling democracy, also riddled with corruption and ineptitude. The mission was about delivering food, medicine, technology, governance, and autonomy to the most impoverished people on Earth. No shots in anger would've been fired by the coalition, had the Taliban allowed it to deliver on these promises without violent resistance. Hundreds of billions of dollars of coalition taxpayer's money was supposed to go into development and rebuilding in Afghanistan. New wells, hospitals, roads and bridges were to be built. Instead, it went into 7.62 linked ammunition and helicopters. TOW missiles, MRAPS, and Hesco Bastions. The Taliban could've easily allowed all of the coalition troops to serve their initial intended purpose. But because of their greed for power and extreme religious views, they cast the entire mission away for all the good it could've brought to the Afghan people. The Taliban are the farthest thing from good Muslims. They are more like Nazis who use Islam as an excuse to invade, conquer, and pillage. Their lowest common denominator is large scale murder and theft. Terror and oppression. Subjugation, rape, and torture of women and girls under the guise of religion. They will never stop until the world stops them. They will keep infecting the West with heroin to fund their CRIMINAL aspirations as long as they're allowed to. Until the world stamps them out in their homes in Pakistan, they will continue terrorizing the region and trafficking drugs. There should be bounties on each and every Taliban leader. Maybe that's the way this should've gone. Professional hits, paid for by the coalition to end this thing once and for all. Every hitman in the world focusing their attention on the madrasses in the border region of Afghanistan and Pakistan until they've been completely decapitated. We would never have spared the Nazis even if they'd surrendered. We sure as hell didn't negotiate with them.

    @WahdicalWeftist That's the L85. The SA80 was unreliable when it was first tested, but the updated version is probably one of the best ARs on the planet. Personally I'd say the only flaw is the charging handle (which has an awkward position for a bulpup rifle)
    Similar to the m16- older versions weren't very good but now the M16A4 is an amazing weapon.
