Honda's 1973 - 1985 ATC 70... What are the differences??

- So since I had all the three wheelers out the other day, I did a little video on the ATC 70's to discuss some of the differences between the first gens (1973 & 1974) and the second gens (1978 - 1985).
I'm not a guru when it comes to ATC 70's, so this video is certainly not an all encompassing, exhaustive tell all on every little change from year to year, but it hits the big things and lets you see all the years in one video. All of my 70's are pretty much stock survivors... some prettier than others. One bigger detail that I know I failed to mention in here is when they went from 3 speed to 4 speed in 1983; 1982 and older motors are only 3 speeds and I'm sorry for not mentioning that.
If you know more details that I haven't mentioned, please leave those down in the comments so we all can learn.
OH, there is no background music in this video, unlike my other videos... so, if you like that, let me know. If you don't like it, let me know. Figured I'd put this one up this way to see what people thought.
Thank you for watching!

Love it! My 1982 ATC70 was my first in 1982. I was 6. My father spoiled me and bought it when I finished kindergarten. That started our whole family on them. The following year he bought my dear older sister an ATC70 so we didn't have to share. Then he got himself a 1983 ATC185S and I thought that was amazing and a beast. Then our family evolved up the ATC lineup. My older brothers bought them. They bought them for nephews. Just a great era in ATV history or time in general.
Love it!!
I still remember the exact moment my dad pulled up with our '82 ATC 70. Seeing that unit in the back of his truck when I was 6 blew my mind. 29 years later and we still own it and ride it weekly. Honda for life.
Nice ATC 70s! I received a brand new atc 70 in 1984 when I turned 6! I was so excited! I remember my mom had it parked outside behind some bushes. She had tied a very long piece of yarn to it, then proceeded to snake it all over the yard under and around things. I had to follow the yarn to find it!
Anyway, I still have it. It still runs and is in good condition with a factory accessory headlight and taillight. Your collection is awesome! I'd love to see an in depth look at the old honda foreman 350s sometime!
Man, that is an awesome story!!! I was definitely picturing that as I read it! Thank you for sharing! I don't have any Foreman 350's anymore, but I know where there is a really nice one. My cousin has my grandfather's old machine and would probably let me get some video of it for sure.
@@ThisOldTrike Thank you for the reply. I didn't realize you no longer have the foremans. I always liked the look of them...not sure about the solid axle front suspension though....
bought a 1982 ATC 70 from original owner with certificate of origin was wondering what was under rear bumper on rubber clips
That would have to be one of the best collections I have ever seen. I have just bought my first 1982 ATC 110 in Australia. Thanks for parting with your knowledge.
Thank you Matt! Congratulations on your 82 110! I'm happy to share what I know (or what I think I know, as I often say... because sometimes I discover I'm WRONG!) Feel free to dig into the archives of videos to find topics that you will like and learn from!
I love watching and learning about all the old bikes it’s awesome I had a 70 when I was little so much fun
Thank you sir! My sister had an 84 70 and my dad sold it before I could ride it!! The void was so big that I had to buy all these three wheelers to fill it...
@@ThisOldTrike haha true I hope to collect just a fraction as many atvs or atcs as you have
It's awesome that you can find out something just by comparing the years! Thanks for passing on this great knowledge!
You bet!
I don't know how anybody can hate your like an ATC superhero!
Ha! I appreciate that!
Great video!! I am absolutely impressed with your comment to your collection. I ride Dirt bikes and Adventure Bikes now but these Honda ATC’s hold a very special place in my youth. Anyone who was a kid in the 70’s or 80’s I’m sure can relate. Tons of fun and Great memories!!! Keep making these great video’s and I’m looking forward to your 200X’s.
Thank you very much man! I'll keep it up!!
so you're the reason I can't find one of these :(. i grew up in the early 2000s and i had one of these it was so much fun, I'm 20 now still looking for one. oh man what a trip. i am so jealous. i only want one haha.
Where abouts do you live? I see these for sale all thr time.
those atc 70s are so COOL!!! ive always wanted one
Awesome. Just got a 84 atc70. Been sitting outside for along time. Just got it fired up last week
Awesome man! Congrats!
She's running good now. Me and my boys cruise around on it almost weekly
You've taught me something.. an old dog CAN learn! When I was 3 (as I recall) my older brother & I shared an ATC 70. When he got a regular dirt bike (Suzuki ts 250) the little 3 wheeler was all mine, but he had to patch the many flat tires I'd get from rattle snakes striking tires & leave hollow fangs, letting out the air. I learned it was a '73. I've never seen another like it until this video. I've described it to people.. orange with flames from the factory. People just looked at me funny. When I got older my dad traded it for a 90cc with huge balloon tires. I hated it, but it did float if I wasn't on it. Under powered for the tires & it took all I had to keep handlebars straight. Probably a bad wheelbearing...
Anyways, I had such good memories thatwhen i seen an '85 on a job site I bought it for $100. Needed tires and carb rebuilt.
My son outgrew it and since my brother had younger kids I sent it with him when he moved to Idaho from Washington state.
His kids outgrew it and he was moving to South Dakota, so I took it back. I gave it to one of my son's friends with two small boys & a smaller girl. He loves it so much he got a full size 3 wheeler for himself - not a cool one like a 250X or something.. people think they're worth their weight in gold! But anyway, thank you for showing the different years, I'm tired of the crazy looks when I describe the '73.
Cheers!
My guy when's the museum going to open??? Massive collection. I'd pay to see that in real life!
I'd have to display them better before I'd feel good about making anybody pay to see them. But thank you for saying they're good enough!
picking up two later models today after work! can't wait.
how much do they usually go for ?
I had a 83 i did not know they made them in the early 70s i thought they started in 79 wow i love to learn
I'm full of ATC info! Hope you enjoy some of my other videos!
@@ThisOldTrike I did injoy it I an fascinated buy the Christmas special I reminds me of my childhood
Very nice love watching em. Do a video of the gokart if possible
Thank you! Will do!
I have a 1973 atc 70 I am willing to part with. Runs, doesn't have a grab bar and the seat is wrong.
I just recently got into the 70 game too, two 73 frames and an 83
That's how it starts!!
Just revisited this video, now that I'm a proud 70 owner.. Lol.. 👍
Awesome! I should revisit this video also. I'm wondering if the info was accurate!
The clutch won't allow forward rolling but they push easy backwards in gear, one way clutch.... tricky honda, I think 84 was first for parking brake.. is that correct?
Great video i have a 1981 Atc 70 but sadly no longer have the original engine its now has a 110 pit bike engine
Not the end of the world though. If you think about how many of those have had their engines swapped out for bigger pit bike motors, it stands to reason that you'd be able to find one pretty easily if you wanted to!
Hi, nice video. I have a 84 110 cc. What a nice collection you have there! Is all of those yours? Lucky guy!
Awesome vids.
Is there a way to decode the chassis number so I know exactly what year bike I’m looking at ??
Just picked up an ATC70 today, but it’s been butchered over the years.
Would be great if you could explain how to chassis numbers work throughout the years.
Cheers.
They weren't all 4 speeds were they? I had a 81 new (7 years old and raced it) I thought it was a 3 speed. Just picked up a 1 owner all original 84 atc70 with title to go with a 86 fourtrax 70 . Plans for grandkids to ride.
No my 78/79 was a 3 spd.. 82/83 was the first 4spd..
I taught it was 84. Because I got a new one in 1984 ..
Great content as always 👍 very informative, and buy my 85 250r 😎
Thanks brother! Looks like that is a possibility!!
I would be interested in your 250r I'm located in tx
I am wondering if you can help me dating a Honda ATC70 Stator cover I have, I think it’s a 1984 but I can’t really find out definitive info on it since I don’t see any that look like it. Not sure how to send a photo of it?
Nice collection !!
It's so nice to line them up to find the differences ,then double check literature, of course.. I never knew what wamulass stood for, .... Its also cool that the honda nos blue 70 replacement fender was blue plastic 85 shape/ mold, its n.o.s. but is it wrong? or right?, or just plain awesome.... the decal explanations, 👍 hopefully this sinks in, most times things are advertised with wrong years/ decals... keep on setting things straight
You know anything about there possibly being 2 vin formats on the 1981 atc70? I sent you an fb message with some documentation.
My first one that my dad got me was a 1974 ATC 70. Where would be the best place to look for one for my kid and to have for nostalgic purposes?
Man... that is a tough thing to buy right now as they typically sell super fast because they've become so collectible. I'd just scour facebook marketplace pretty regularly and keep your fingers crossed!
We have an '82, its a 4 speed. There is also some wiring at the rear. Wondering if they came with a tail light ? Thanks ! 👍😎
Here we are again! So there was an optional headlight/tail light that you could get for these. Basically the same headlight set up that are on the early US90's. I've only seen pictures of a couple with them on it. Probably most parents didn't feel it necessary for their 5 year olds to be bombing around on their 70 after dark...
WOW, what a line up.and i learned something, always thought i had a 81 tank on our 84. nope ,it`s a 82 has the blue on the front.
Awesome man! Glad you liked it and glad you got something out of it!
Great video I have been watching some of your videos before buying a couple bikes now myself it’s a great help! Just wondering you mentioned someone that makes good reproductions graphics? Wouldn’t have a link or contact for them? Would be a great help thank you!
Thank you so much man! I've been buying most my decals from Bruce at www.bluelinedecals.com these days. But there is also Scott at DDR Slapp (facebook only I believe) who makes a good product too.
I had one long ago and mine had a back rack. Was that factory or add on.
No sir. Honda didn't offer a rack for the 70's.
I remember my first bike when I was age 4 it was a 1979 Honda Atc70 and I’m now 14 and I still own it
Any chance you could measure a 1974 carb drain line for me?
I don't have easy access to that machine at the moment unfortunately.
@@ThisOldTrike thanks for the consideration. Love the channel and your content!
Hi..luvv ur ATC 70 collection..gotta question 4 u ????
Have u ever seen a ATC 70 with a kick start?? Notta pull start!!! But a kick start?? A friend sold me a ATC 70 and I can't remember what yr it was?? Early 80s I think?? I'd I can remember?? But my local deals hip said that in Canada you could pre order one from the factory with a kick start??? I freaked the F#+×kkkk out!!! Lol...just wondering if you have ever seen one???take care..Ray
Thank you very much! The only ATC 70's I've seen with kick starts are modded with China motors or something else. I don't believe what your dealership said. I've never ever heard of a factory kickstart option.
My dad bought me a new one in 1982-83 , I would love some help finding one in the UK the correct one that I once had.
I wanna see a video about those 250 x’s you have those look clean
It's on my to-do list!
The orange 73s are cool.
In your opinion what is the best year for the Honda atc70?
1985. Just like every other Honda 😊
Do you have any for sale?
Unfortunately I don't have any 70's for sale.
@@ThisOldTrike Ok thanks brother. Amazing Collection BTW
Thank you!
I have a 1989 70 barn find all original what is it worth
You sure you've got a 1989? Or did you mis-type that?
1984 first year with parking brake on lever?
I have a 73 plastics are perfect tank is correct but painted black. Would you be interested?
Sure. Is there a good way to contact you? Or can you find me on Facebook or Instagram and send me a message?
I would love to find an 85 ATC 70 if you or anyone you know wants to sell one. Thanks, love your videos!
I need some for my family
I found mine on Craigslist and marketplace. Stay diligent and you'll find some. Where are you located?
I remember that the first year the 4-spd came out in 1984 ..
1983 and down was
3-spd..
Were the 78s a 3 speed
Yes sir. 82 was the first year for 4 speed.
Where can I find one of these?
Heard they're on sale at Cumberland Farms.
I have a 73 all original for sale runs excellent very little ride time in very good condition
Where are you located?
