"An entertaining film. It is beautifully shot, well-acted and sharply directed. And a mention must be made of the excellent [...] aerial battles." - Britflicks.com
Based on Arkady Fiedler's bestseller, Squadron 303 relates the true story of the Polish pilots who were heroes in the Battle of Britain. Jan Zumbach is recovering from a plane crash in a sanatorium when WWII breaks out. The Nazi onslaught forces him to escape from occupied Poland. A similar fate awaits the heroic flight instructor, Witold Urbanowicz. Both make their way to Great Britain and carry on the fight against the Nazi Luftwaffe. Quickly, their heroism and skill catch the attention of commanders, and an elite, Polish fighter squadron is created: Squadron 303. At first they are underestimated and mocked, but thanks to the outstanding patriotism and bravery of its members, the squadron quickly wins respect.

Sir John Keegan, military historian, lecturer, and writer who died in 2012 made the following comment:-
“The Polish airmen who had escaped their savaged country in 1939 made a major contribution to the Royal Air Force’s victory in the Battle of Britain in 1940. Their subsequent treatment by the British government was one of the most shameful episodes of the Cold War.”

Whether an historian says something doesn’t make it true. Whilst the Polish air force squadrons provided great work after the Battle of Britain ( my local airfield was home to a Polish Mosquito squadron,) they contributed very little to the action BofB. 303(Polish) wasn’t even activated under the end of September. I’ve read many times about how badly the Poles were treated at the end of the war (NOT during the Cold War, which was much later) but what do you suggest the British should have done?? Gone to war on their behalf? You might remember we did that in 1939 and the subsequent six years of war bankrupted us in blood and treasure. We long term neighbour Leo (RIP) lost six brothers, three to the Germans and three to the Russians and he often said that nothing could have been done. And he had fought with Polish First army from D-Day to the end.

@@lotuselise4432 I’m afraid that’s just not true. The military records of the Battle are freely available for your own research. Try “ When was 303(Polish) squadron activated?” (Answer:September- after the Battle had been decided) “How many of the 1500 German aeroplanes destroyed were claimed by 303sqn?”(44) “was 303sqn the top scoring squadron?” (No) “Was the top scoring pilot of 303sqn Polish?” ( No, he was Czech). There were many heroic Poles, my next door neighbour was one of them. Landed with Polish first Army three days after D-Day and saw his regiment decimated to squad size in two weeks through fierce fighting. After the war he discovered three of his six brothers had been killed by Germans, three by Russians. Left Poland to live in peace with his wife Mimi in England. RIP Leo.

In addition to the remarkable performance of the Polish pilots in the Battle of Britain, there were also Polish infantry and armored units which fought in both the Italian and European campaigns. They also proved the skill, dedication and heroism of the Poles. It is shameful that the Allies in the end turned their backs on Poland and allowed them to be swallowed by the Soviets for political reasons rather than standing with such a staunch and heroic friend. Poland deserved much better. From the United States I also say "Long Live Poland!"

"Their success rates were very high in comparison to the less-experienced British Commonwealth pilots.[7] The 303 squadron became the most efficient RAF fighter unit at that time,[8] and RAF commanders protested when government censors refused to allow this fact to appear in the press. By late 1940 the American visitor Ralph Ingersoll reported that the Poles were "the talk of London" because of their victories. Although at first the Poles memorised basic English sentences to identify themselves if shot down over Britain to avoid being mistaken as Germans, Ingersoll wrote that such pilots returned with "a girl on each arm. They say the girls cannot resist the Poles, nor the Poles the girls"

Actually the success rates of the top scoring pilots are very similar. Top Czech 17kills, Top Pole 16kills, Top Aussie 15kills, Top Kiwi 15kills. The grouping of Eastern European pilots into an “ace” squadron is easy to explain as their “weaker sisters” were weeded out by the Germans in the Battle of Poland and the Battle of France. Similarly, British pilots who had fought- and were good enough to survive- the Battle of France, would go on to be higher scorers than the new replacements in the Battle of Britain. This is Natural Selection at its bloodiest and it would be surprising if this wasn’t the case.

TheOdessaSteps I’ve been over CGI for years. If you are making some fantasy thing that doesn’t actually exist I understand that you have to computer generate it but the coolest part about WW2 planes that they actually exist and actually do fly. It’s completely unnecessary to use CGI that much throughout the movie. Just use it supplementally. I understand logistically using real 109s and real hurricanes is definitely a bit more difficult but I’d think if you actually care about the history and story and doing it honor you’d understand that getting or keeping a few more of those old planes flying is probably more of an achievement and benefit to society than making another movie with mediocre writing.

The history of 303 Squadron and its Pilots is well known and remembered in Poland. It is a pity that the Polish government did not help to the film production. That's why the movie has poor special effects. Returning to history, the 303 Squadron had the best shootout ratio in the Battle of Britain. Many pilots of this squadron taught British and American pilots, including Franciszek Gabryszewski, an ace from the USAF. In 1939, the pilots of this squadron were able to shoot down 109 while flying on P11, in the Battle of Britain they literally defeated the Germans by flying planes of similar parameters. And one last thing. In 1939, Polish pilots used a different tactic than English pilots in the Battle of Britain. Poles flew very close and only opened fire, the English fired from a greater distance and therefore could not successfully shoot at German aircraft. They rigidly adhered to their tactics of battle and only the Poles showed them how to fight with Me109

If it hadn't been for the British & French declaration of war in 1939, regardless of their inability to give meaningful support to Poland in its "hour of need", or if the UK had surrendered in june 1940 after the collapse of France (as the ENTIRE world expected us to) then Poland would have remained under nazi domination for DECADES. Remember that apart from Britain and France (who between them collectively squandered 1.1 million of their own citizen's lives, as well as both bankrupting themselves as nations) absolutely NO ONE in the so called "international community" raised a finger or cared whether Poland existed or not in 1939.
Without the continued opposition of the British empire to nazism from June 1940 onwards, opposition which bankrupted the UK and cost her 460,000 of her citizen's lives, there would have been:
NO D-Day and war in the Meditteranean to draw sizeable wehrmacht resources from the war on the Eastern Front.
NO strategic bombing of German cities and war industries.
NO interdiction of German global sea trade by the Royal Navy.
NO massive supply of weapons and war materiel from the west to the USSR, once their former allies nazi Germany had turned on them.
NO utterly crucial strategic intelligence courtesy of Britain's (not Poland's before you say it) "ULTRA" program.
With the result that the USSR would have collapsed somewhere in 1942/43, leaving the nazis in control of the whole of Europe, and their extermination camps still operating on Polish soil into the 1950s, 60s, or even 70s.
For those Ignorant modern day Poles, on your way out, please remember to kneel at the altar dedicated to the combined 1.1 million lives sacrificed by the UK and France in order to topple the nazism that was murdering and torturing YOUR country when NOBODY else cared whether you lived or died.
And for all current honourable, and deeper thinking Poles, please accept our best wishes from the UK.

However, more important than the individual accomplishment is the team performance. Even though the pilots’ performance was measured by the number of kills, without them supporting each other and working as a team, they would not have been able to accomplish this level of success. Btw, do you know what we, in Poland, remember the most? - It’s the fact that those pilots were not allowed to participate in the victory parade, when the war was over. SHAME!!! Looking at the big picture, i.e., the fact that Polish government in exile was forced to pay for the upkeep of the military that was fighting to accomplish not Polish but British military objectives with Polish gold reserves, the fact that British government patronized the effort to take the credit for breaking the code of the Enigma encoding machine accomplished by Polish scientists, and having made gen. Sosabowski a scapegoat for the failure of the Operation Market Garden, it all adds up to a pattern. The biggest factor in this pattern the fact that Polish government entered the alliance with Britain based on the British guarantee of military security for Poland, which was A DECEPTION. Your government had neither a plan, nor the military potential to liberate Polish territory. In conclusion, the British pre-war government, as well as the wartime one, was nothing but a BUNCH OF CROOKS! SHAME!!!

Once they were put into the more modern Hurricanes, they showed exactly how skilled and professional they were. 303 Squadron, an all Polish RAF unit, had the highest kill and lowest loss ratio of any RAF squadron during the BOB. Well its a historical fact that the czech and the poles rescued britain in the BoB of 1940. Without these pilots, the RAF fighter-command would have collapsed. Its funny when you think that 70 years later, england is living a collective lie when it comes to WW2...

303 Polish squadron had the largest number of kills AS WELL as the highest kills to lossed ratio, better than any others even the English...Hurricanes had the highest number of kills in the BB, one pilot shot down 5 in one day, with 19 downed by another pilot in his Hurricane during the 7 week long battle, they were tough with FOUR 20mm cannon, as opposed to the spitfires 8 303's, but it was the explosive ammo that mattered most, Hurricanes could out turn an Me109 as well as a Spitfire, but couldn't catch them if they ran....the Hurries were liked as much as Spits.

scott left at the opening of the war it’s possible, probably shot down Stuka dive bombers. Later in the war the model bf109 reigned supreme until the later model spits cane out at which point he fw190 butcher bird handled no problem. Sheer endless numbers of planes is what the British got by begging America for help

This film is total bollocks. There were only 47 Polish fighter pilots who entered the Battle on the 7th September, too late to make any difference. Compare that to the 1700 British pilots. Yet again jonny foreigner tries to revise history also, remember, WW2 started because the Poles did fuck all to prepare or defend themselves. It is an insult to the British and Commonwealth pilots to give the poles this sort of cred.

    • @JimWalsh-rl5dj
