AYANEO Pocket S: Premium and Underwhelming
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 чер 2024
- The AYANEO Pocket S is a premium Android handheld, reminiscent of flagship smartphones. It has the most powerful Snapdragon processor available today, and a super sleek form factor -- but it also has some design setbacks that prevent it from being a solid recommendation, especially at its price point. Let's discuss why.

Russ - I LOVE that you put these one-line summaries in the title, so useful. You're one of the most practical UA-camrs I know, don't change
Agree, proving that you don't have to do all those crummy misleading things to build a great channel and following
I'm happy that he isn't like ETA Prime who literally praises even the worst and priciest tech possible.
Literally the gold standard of reviewers
@@EpsilonChurchRVB I've definitely seen Prime give cons for things or not like them, but he is overall more pre-disposed towards being positive towards devices.
No click bait, and still every video is worth clicking
"It will live in a shelf in the foreseeable future". Damn.

After that sentence you can hear ayaneo CEO cry from everywhere.😂
So will 99% of these handheld. They gotyour money companies don't care.

I'm glad ever more for my purchase of the Odin 2 (based off of mainly your recommendation)!
Odin 2 still has no competitor. Is just too good in every aspect.
Odin 2 still king
Odin 2 mini was announced, loll
@@fillerbunnyninjashark271 Is not better than the Odin 2
@@franciscobutte the Odin 2 but half the size I would say is definitely an improvement
Ayaneo: We got this new overpowered machine you really dont need for a price you cant really afford.
Me: yeah man I wanna do it
They got you right where they want you
I swear these and anbernic share the same business management teams
Game plan
Make 100000000000 devices a year flood the market
Ayaneo:we got the expensive end
Anbernic: we got the under 100 dollar end.
End result trash.
@@sTuPiDiScOoL_ Its not that easy.. since Anbernic has "premium devices" aswell, like the ANBERNIC RG552 or the ANBERNIC RG556 ... but yeah, still quite cheaper than this overpriced trash.. to me it kinda feels like ayaneo is going to be the apple of the handhelds.... overpriced, unreasonable pricescaling (remember the extra tier for the unmarked version compared to the internal storage pricing for an iphone), etc... while anbernic is the (xiaomi) redmi class which is cheap but solid option in that pricerange (sure, there are cheaper ones, but more than often they are real trash like ali-express fake phones)
Technically they will withstand upgrading for a while will they not? I mean, overpoered means, will be ok in 2 years
They played us like a damn fiddle!
Highly sophisticated mechanism indeed. Props Russ 👏
Your timing is impeccable. I just saw the talk of the Odin2 mini and then it got me seeing your video on the AYANEO Pocket S from 2 months ago. I realized they sent out review units by now and thought maybe you had a video brewin’. Glad I was right and this is a good ol’ 38 minuter.
Odin 2 mini is gonna probably be like half the price of this
@@fillerbunnyninjashark271 After finishing this video I stopped considering the Pocket S. I do already own an Odin 2 Pro and it seems this doesn’t do much to shrink down from the Odin 2 size as much as I’d like. Ideally I’d love an RP4 Pro form factor with this quality build and Odin 2 levels of performance. Also, Odin2 Mini starts at $339.
@dynamicide
The RP5 Pro will be out soon. 😁
I’ve been anxiously awaiting this review. I got my snacks but need to grab a drink, brb.
WHAT!!??? Odin 2 mini is exactly what I was looking for, what an incredible clifhnanger you did !!!!
It looks so good lol I have a PS Vita in a genuine (lol) PS Vita bag, and it might have a new neighbor soon.
same here and I love mini led tech, my tv is one and I think I prefer it over oled, it's more balances imo
I just canceled my order. Russ, the joystick call out is exactly what I needed. When I initially ordered, I felt your first impression video may have swayed Aya Neo to change those out. They seem like they didn’t. Thank you again. Going Odin Mini 100%…
Yup! Same reason I’m not getting the Aya slide. It has a similar problem with the sticks… but it looks soooo good tho!!
I just wish the layout was PlayStation instead of Xbox. My hands really don't like the offset sticks
I just saw this. I didn't know I could cancel the contribution, and I just smashed that refund button. Thank you!
I also refunded my contribution and immediately bought the Odin 2. Saved some money and got what clearly seems like the better device.
@@fillerbunnyninjashark271 I Agree.
Lol I beeeen waiting for this. I already decided I'm not getting one but your reviews are always appreciated. Hopefully Ayn gets an odin 2 mini to you asap... It's between that and the full size one for me.
I just got my RP4P but now I've got Odin 2 Mini lust
@@jackamick9153yeah odin2 mini might be the new meta depending on people's needs. More compact than the original but same power/performance, definitely looking forward to it.
I got the retroid because it's Sony style layout. I hate the Xbox style offset sticks
I have the full size. It’s the best device I’ve ever owned
Thanks for dropping the detailed review Russ, you're efforts are always appreciated! I was honestly only holding out from getting the pocket S until after your official review dropped! So now I'm going to save up for the Odin 2 mini 😄
Great review. Your channel is my go to for any new handheld device and your setup guide for the retroid pocket 4 was great.
Can't wait for you to review Odin 2 mini. I recently purchased RP4PRo and thinking about returning it and wait for that one
Your mechanism reminds me of when I'd use rubber bands and erasers from school on my DS to get my character to run into one of those movement tiles in Pokemon continously to level up my daycare pokemon., blast from the past. Cool device review too BTW lol.
12:23 Hey Russ, I'll be making the 2-in-1 case/grip for this device when I receive mine (should be here soon). I'll ship you out one once it's finished.
Ross we really appreciate that you have those balls of steel and you're still presenting us the Switch performance.
Thanks for your videos russ!. reviewing and receiving products as often as you do probably gets very tiring..... Especially when its as thorough and well done as these, I really hope you can take a nice long break soon.
I was thinking the same thing. I really enjoy his video format, but he can’t have very much time with his family. With him being retired I imagine he has enough passive income to take a deserved break.
exceptional review! I really appreciate the full on comparison with the Odin 2. Really puts it all into perspective! Hope you'll do the same for the Odin 2 Mini when it comes out!
Great video, started on my second monitor, quickly moved it to my primary monitor instead.
Can't wait for an eventual Odin 2 Mini comparison to this level.
Hey!
I really like you content and do appreciate your passion about measure and test. So I would like to suggest an idea to use a noise meter to estimate cooling noise (especially for comparison between different consoles)
thanks for you work!
Really hyped for this!!! Hope drivers for switch get worked on.
Another great review. I just cancelled my pocket S order and bought an Odin 2. I love how sleek the device is, but if I can save some money and get a better device, it’s a no brainer.
Odin 2 is the best device I’ve ever owned. I love that thing
@clashthatdemonhed
Perfectly put, same here.
This was an incredibly thorough review, and I loved the side by side comparisons with the Odin 2. I think between the two, were I to buy one of them, I think I’d go with the Odin 2 for sure
I would like to thank you. Without you I would have so much more time and money that I would not know what to do with.
Hard to tell whether you’re being serious or sarchasm if with that one haha.

Thanks to your review and Tech Dweeb's I have decided to cancel my order for this. Definitely disappointed in the dpad, the sticks and the drivers. And really happy at the announcement of the odin 2 mini as that will basically check all of my boxes bar any fatal flaws that might appear once reviewers get their hands on it. Appreciate reviewers for saving consumer's money, thanks Russ!
I've been eyeing this handheld for a while now. Seemingly I might pick this or the Odin 2 Mini.
Good job, Russ ♥️
dude 100% get the odin 2
Either of the Odins is superior.
Odin 2 Mini for sure!
I was so so SO close to ordering the pocket S but the thermal problems made me worried for the price.
The Odin 2 is a bit too big for me for my use case so hearing about the Odin 2 Lite makes me happy I waited and didn't give into FOMO and the beauty of the Pocket S!
So the fan can get quite loud but how often during gaming would you say it actually had to ramp up so you would hear it?
Ever since picking up a Rog Ally (non-extreme) open box for $300 I have totally stopped considering buying any handhelds. That doesn't stop me from watching these great videos though!
Not even a smaller more pocket able one?
@sandplasma ngl the RG35XXSP is very tempting at its price-point for early gen gaming. Love a pocketable clamshell. Possible impulse buy for an easy travel conpanion haha
@@TheCmurley131 Agreed, I use my Ally at home mostly. Just got a 405M for when I'm on the go. Definitely helps when I'm waiting in the car for someone.
Just wanted to correct something at the end of the video, pocket s does have turnip driver support. Kimchi has already gotten them working and its being merged into mainline turnip.
What's turnip?
Beat me to it, he probably used the wrong version, github was updated with A32 support couple weeks ago
Thanks for the feedback, I was using the latest Kimchi drivers in my testing but there is some sort of bug with them which creates graphical issues and crashes. Native drivers performed quite a bit better, which is why I showcased them. Kimchi told me that he'll be dropping an update shortly that should work with the Pocket S.
Can someone tell me what turnip is please?
@@devinrobertson5251 they’re a set of third-party GPU drivers for Android that many emulators (including Yuzu and Vita3K) support. These drivers generally perform better and are more compatible than Qualcomm’s stock drivers.
I definitely bought this device. I love the design. This is my second handheld since the PS Vita. Regardless of specs and price it’s your detailed reviews that made me return to handheld gaming.
Thanks.
Thank you Russ for another awesome video, especially showing and testing the dpad and thumbsticks. I don't think this thing got anything on the Odin 2. Long live the old king.
Russ, six months ago, I had 2 handhelds and now I have 11 and get annoyed whenever I look at them, "Which one do I play?!"
Thanks, bud. 😂
Narrow it down to 4 handhelds and sell or give away the rest 😎
@@netnomad47 Not a bad idea.

Thank you for very comprehensive review. I am waiting for my 1080p model, but I don’t think to even open the box once I will receive it. I will probably sell it immediately and buy something different. Either from AYN or Ambernic.
Why waste time trying to sell and potentially lose money when you could just cancel?
@@yungfella666 Didn’t know I can haha, thanks 🙏
Russ, can I just say that I have a love/hate relationship with your channel. I love the fact that after watching your reviews I'm able to make an informed decision that said, I hate the fact that money always seems to leave my pocket almost every time I finish watching your reviews. I held out on the Odin2 ever since the Pocket S was announced now it's a no-brainer, I'm most definitely buying the Odin2 and going all out with the Max model while at it. I'm future-proofing myself now that Windows emulation is steadily maturing on Android. As always, great review. Thank you 🙏
Would you mind doing an updated review of the MSI Claw? There’s been a couple solid updates that apparently improve performance significantly
As always thank you Russ for your honest opinions!
Awesome video, thanks. Looks a lot like the RP4 Pro minus the Glossy finish
I actually think a smaller size to make this more pocketable would have given it a big edge to win over the Odin, even if it was a bit less powerful and it might have helped the price some too. I think I was hoping for something like a Retroid that was joystick focused and premium but more portable than the Odin. Great review, as always!
Been waiting for this video
same Russ is the only dude whos opinion i value in this space.
Thanks for your feedback. My Pocket 2 is on the way and I'm very curious how it fares against the Odin2 Max.
Also, how does the GX3 Gen2 compare against Gen 3, e.g., S24U?
To be fair, having ordered the 1440p limited edition, I got it because of perfect integer scaling for some consoles - it's a niche piece, but it's why I got in early as there can be some perfect integer scaling, much like the Analogue Pocket can do.
Is it worth the money? Arguably not, but I'd say it's better at the 1440p SKU compared to the 1080p - had it been 1080p only, I wouldn't have bothered as I have my Odin 2 Max thanks to your recommendation, Russ
Russ, thank you for your always honest and practical testing. The fact that the Odin 2 consistently beats it in sustained performance and has significantly battery life, makes this too hard to justify. I just cancelled my early bird preorder.
They're revealing the pocket micro on 18th. Cant wait to see your eventual thoughts on it.
Will you review the Odin 2 Mini and compare them to the Odin 2 and other handheld in that size range? I'm especially interested in the Screens and brightness to play outside. Also a Video with Odin 2 vs AYANEO Pocket S would nice
LCD in 2024 for that price? Total dealbreaker.
If play a lot for years it's better than burn oled screen
Modern OLED don't have burnin issues with normal use... But vrr can't be done with them
Honestly... I would have said the same until I started using good LCD's against good OLED's. When I had to RMA my steam deck OLED for a ground loop in the headphone amplifier, I was back to using my LCD deck and realized... I really didn't mind at all. The LCD looked amazing still. Same for my retroid pocket 4 pro. Would an OLED be nice? yes. But I genuinely have no complaints in use.
The reality is that OLED screens can be pricey still. Yes some devices are sneaking them in like the new anbernic, but the reality is that the anbernic also has a much less expensive chipset. Chips get a LOT more expensive as you go more modern, and the fact that this is like HALF the price of any phone with this processor, I think maybe the cost of a screen was a real consideration. Maybe offering an OLED version as an upgrade would have been the way to go. I probably would have paid extra if this device was for me (I've just discovered after getting the 405m that I prefer nice plastic devices to metal and glass for gaming)
@@fillerbunnyninjashark271I’m on the fence, I have a A8G Sony oled that does have burn in BUT that’s from using it since 2019 and it’s not noticeable unless the screen isn’t showing anything.
I think burn in is still a major problem but definitely not like it was nor is it truly noticeable. I also paid almost $4k for my oled back in 2019, vs what you can get a modern OLED for even a game system.
@@fillerbunnyninjashark271what are you talking about? OLED can absolutely support VRR. I have an G9 OLED and LG CX which both support VRR. I think there are some flicker issues in certain situations, but I’ve never noticed it.
I purchased the 1440p 1tb model and can't wait for delivery. I'm in it for how thin the system is while being around the same power as the odin two. I just like the switch lite style form factor.
What I really can't wait to see is a tear down as well as what hardware and backplate mods people come up with.
I'm debating on CNCing an aluminum backplate with a rear vent as well as running some thermal pads to disperse the excess heat.
Ayaneo should have a teardown video already. I think it was shown when they announced the pocket.
I bought an odin 2 based on your recommendation. Thanks!
All these android handhelds are getting more expensive but they dont offer anything new yes they all play ps2 and switch perfectly fine but they dont offer anything that makes the price point worth it. android gaming is pretty stale and its a shame that our only option is emulation, such a missed opportunity.
I absolutely agree. Android gaming is definitely stale, and I think companies really should've pushed to have more games on the platform. There are a ton of classics that are available on Android natively, but the only "new" games that are worth playing on it are the idle idol gacha games or anything MiHoYo is putting out. Android would absolutely benefit from modern, native games. Especially with things like Winlator showing that the Snapdragon chips are powerful enough. Now that iPhones/iPads are getting emulators in the App Store, maybe they'll see that the market is there. I just hope that they don't also do what MiHoYo does and focus solely on iOS.
But even then, the missed opportunity is on game developers, not these handhelds and their companies. It's a little unprecedented that we have a $99 Retroid Pocket 2S that can handle GameCube, a $199 Retroid Pocket 4 Pro that can handle PS2, and a $299 Odin 2 that can handle Switch, 3DS, and PS2 without breaking a sweat. It was just a dream 2 years ago, and it was only fathomable last year with the Odin Lite and a LOT of settings tweaking. Those price points are clearly worth it for what you get, since a flagship chip for $300 is insane. Especially if you consider it's coming with active cooling and built-in controls.
Modern games kinda suck though. There's enough power in some of these Android handhelds to emulate Windows and play PC games like fallout new Vegas
This thing has power to run Horizon Forbidden West natively if a port was made
@@fillerbunnyninjashark271 don't you watch action figure reviews ?
@@Ningsoong joined 9 months ago, 1 comment on this channel.
Is the screen response/ghosting better on this compared to O2?
Crazy to see performance dropping at max brightness compared to 50% brightness, first time seeing this behaviour.
Due to heat? Or lack of power(wattage)?
Anyway, so the 40-50% gpu clock speed advantage is giving a ~10-15% improvement at best, even in gpu benchmarks, probably due to throttling (either heat or power)
As the review went on I was like "man the odin 2 sounds nice wish they took that and just made it smaller."
Looking forward to the Mini review.

Russ - I’d appreciate your input:
Question:
Can the emulators for the Saturn and Dreamcast - on any of the systems/ emulators (Via Pocket S, Odin 2, Retroid Pocket Pro 4 or Steam Deck) able to play and connect online capable games online? (Custom fan made servers?)
Can in one of your future videos test/ look into this topic?
all very nice, honestly im quite happy with my gpdwin 4. the new windows emulator looks promising tho for android based devices.
I was still ready to get this despite the shortcomings for most of the review as I love the design but it heating up so quickly is a deal breaker. If they fix it in a future revision I'll get that.
Same. I was going to still try it out and try to justify my purchase, but then I saw that they didn't change the sticks and messed up the d-pad to the point that I know I'd hate using it. "Well, maybe it'll be good for Android games--" then everyone so far has said that the key-mapper is trash.
I refunded my order.
Same refunded and will get the Odin 2 mini which ships late June. Easy decision after the reviews.
Also, Champions and other Snowblind games (Baldur's Gate: DA 1&2, Champions: R2A) absolutely require you to flip a couple of settings on. You have to go into Game Properties > Advanced > Hardware Fixes and turn on Disable Frame Invalidation (or if you're on NetherSX2-4248, the two settings that have Invalidation in the name). This will make those flame textures from torches and certain fires to NOT kill the framerate, and it makes the game absolutely playable, even on the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro.
I absolutely love my Odin 2 Pro. I also recently bought the Galaxy S24 Ultra and the comparison between the two performance-wise when playing Gran Turismo 3 and 4 is kind of night and day especially when driving on the night tracks with a lot of lights. My Odin 2 barely slows down only when going thru the tunnel, but my Galaxy S24 Ultra slows down all throughout the track by ALOT and they are both upscaled 3x. Even when I put my Galaxy S24 Ultra to native resolution it doesn't change the slowdowns at all it's kind of crazy since the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is much more powerful. What could the issue be, the drivers in the Galaxy S24 Ultra just not being supported compared to the 8 Gen 2? Just shows how good the Odin 2 really is.

I was really torn between this and the Odin 2, but I’m leaning Odin 2 based on this review. The price is a def premium but I do appreciate the battery life and screen. Man I wanted to love this, but just falls short! (Would consider if price was lower).
12:25 That flip grip case is really cool. Where did you find it and do they make one for switch lites?

Great review, but not for me given the Odin 2 and everything we know. Basically we're paying extra for a lot of pretty.

I've got a question Russ, that I think you'd have a good answer for - the odin 2 mini is.... really really freaking tempting.. I've long said that my reason for getting the RP4pro over the odin 2 was purely down to form factor. But having the RP4pro and being ever so slightly disappointed in its ps2 performance - all other things being equal, do you think the chipset of the odin 2 is that dramatic of a performance bump if what I really intend to play mostly is 3ds, gamecube and ps2?
I don't really mind the price angle, I can sell my RP4pro and can afford any of these handhelds, I'm just looking for that perfect ps2 performance in a small and portable form factor that the regular odin 2 didn't fit into, between a handheld like the miyoo mini + and steam deck (obviously going to wait and see what you think of the device's other features like controls and ergonomics)
Also - thank you again for that legion go video. You literally just fixed an issue I've been having with my lenovo laptop's audio for almost 4 years now with that video.
How much did AYN pay you? Nah I'm kidding, mate. Love your stuff. Everytime I see you publish a video I get really happy. Thanks for all your hard work!
Even if it's a preprod unit (assuming one can be obtained), we need a comparison of the Odin 2 Mini urgently.
With only a little time left between now and when the early bird pricing for the Pocket S finishes, the people who *want* a sleek device with a flat feel need to know if they should wait for the Odin 2 Mini, or jump on the Pocket S while it's still cheap
Can you test Steam OS LCD/OLED again even with emulation? It haves a new Steamos 3.6, and I want to see if it's better, same, or worse.
I WAS WAITING ON THIS!!
Ohhh did you change your filming room set up?
I ordered one of these because I love the form factor, and it kind of reminded me of the Vita, which I'm a big fan of. But it looks like the Odin 2 Mini is probably closer to what I really want.
Fortunately, I went with the 1440p version, and I think the limited nature of it will make it pretty easy to sell it and get the Odin 2 Mini instead if I decide to go that route.
Wait till you see the new odin 2 mini
@@_BlackGuy_ I have, and I'm super excited for it.
1440p on a 6” screen is pointless. It’ll just drain battery faster, while not looking better than 1080p. Also these type of handhelds don’t hold value, especially Aya Neo, considering how fast they produce the next replacement.
@@nyjay 1440p has perfect scaling, which is a benefit over 1080p. Just depends on whether that matters to you or not.
The 1440p version also seems to be very limited, so I could see it retaining more value than usual for that reason.
Worst case scenario, I just keep it, which is also fine by me. 🙂
Hey Russ just curious, have you ever used Delta Touch for Android?
Russ, you did not betray us just to please the manufacturer! Thank you!
Hi! You’ve been super helpful! Can we make a revisit to the original RG35xx? Since there’s multiple new handheld with different OS, I think it’d be helpful. Or possibly a lineup? :D thank you for sharing your knowledge and insight! 😊
Russ, are you going to be testing out the Odin 2 Mini soon?
is the device google play certified to play warzone mobile? can you download it and play a game to confirm? if it closes at the main menu it means its not
wondering how the odin2 mini will change the value, because it looks like a much better deal tbh, and it looks to have the same amazing sticks as the retroid pocket 4
I would like a Steamdeck mini if these get popular. While I love the large form factor of the Steamdeck. A mini one would be so cool.
When we compare a true reviewer to ETA reviews we know how this Channel sticks up against all other channels. Hope your channel continues to deliver unbiased reviews as it grows. 👏
I placed an order of Pocket S 1080P 16G+512G so I had been waiting for your review to drop. I got RP4 pro, Steam Deck and Ally but I want form factor that's in-between. Ideally I would've liked a Retroid pocket with a bit larger screen and a chip that can run up to Switch comfortably. I didn't consider Odin 2 because its a bit too large for my use case and I want something that's bit more nondescriptive. So I like the shape of Pocket S quite a bit. And tbh Odin 2 Max is currently $460 and I paid $500 for Pocket S, which is not a huge difference for a latest chip and better build material.
But I do have my concerns. Firstly the Sticks, I really like the sticks on RP4 so yeah, Pocket S might feel like downgrade. And second is the repairability. Imo cooling fans needs to be cleaned periodically for optimal cooling. Pocket S don't looks like it'd be easy to open. As someone who owned Vita when it was released, I quite like the Odin2 Mini design but the screen looks bit too small on its frame. But I may consider the mini instead if its easier to open and not too bulky in size. I hope Ayn would release some actual video of it before I can no longer cancel my pledge for Pocket S.
You should get a refund for the Pocket S and wait for Odin 2 mini, which will be out in a couple of months. It sounds like that's exactly the device for you.
Does this support audio through usbc headphones? I noticed it doesn’t have a 3.5 mm headphone jack.
Pocket S GPU got added to turnip yesterday, hopefully we will see the driver release very soon.
What's turnip?
I like how slick the pocket S looks. But I've been waiting for a pocketable device that's shaped like the Vita. And the AYN Odin 2 mini just got announced. :L
is it the odin 2 base, pro or max these test were held? looking to buy one not sure if max worth it over pro
Nothing is replacing my Steam Deck OLED Limited Edition for a long time. 😊 This looks so meh… great review bro. You should have way more subs than you have now.
Great review
Hey Russ Love your Videos, I heard what you said in one of your last videos about getting a new desk. But that diagonal shot during your intros doesn't look as good as your usual footage. it just feels weird at that angle.
Thanks for the feedback, but unfortunately it was a necessary change. I was sitting down too much and it was wrecking my health, so I needed to get a standing desk. And unfortunately we have slim pickings here in Hawaii, most places won’t ship furniture here. I hope to make better use of my new angles as I keep experimenting!
Glad i bought the Odin 2 - Max. It works realy realy good for me. I play arround 5-6h per day Diablo 4 with it (Steam link). Was about to pull the trigger for Pocket S, but my Odin 2 is as good (in my opinion better) then Pocket S
Russ knew I just got my Odin 2 Pro delivered and wanted to make sure I didn't have regrets.
Slightly off topic: Do you guys know a nice software/app to map touch to buttons like here but on devices that don't have that built in? For example GammaOS on the RG405M.
Russ how do you even install yuzu and citra on new devices when it's off the app store
Is there an option to go from 1440p to 1080p to save battery if needed?
Any chance we get to see the OneXPlayer 2 Pro 8840U soon?? 😬
Guys rg35xx h or rbg10 max 3??
I found two with similar price, but don't really know which is better, watched both videos but still not sure.
Any tips?
