I don't know what's more unbelievable, 4:53 being possible or Nintendo actually "polishing" a game before re-releasing it as an emulation.

This was still for the Super Nintendo. Back when they took more care in making games
Speedrunning might be the most paradoxical form of video games. Players spend the most time on a game to spend the least time on a game.
(that's not a paradox)
That's the same with anything where you want to be fast or efficient. 100m sprint, formula 1 racing, golf, speedcubing, even in most martial arts you usually want to finish your opponent as fast as possible. Speedrunning is anything but unique in that aspect.
It’s ironic, not paradoxical
@@nothydrostorm6711 Ironic are speedruns that take longer than normally completing a game. But paradoxical is that more time is spent so less time is spent.
It's like golf ...you play more to play less.
I love that Darbian's bus analogy is still used as a simple way to explain frame rules
Bomb content my dude. I didn't realize there was so much more optimization to go in SMB all stars.
Yes
8:50 it actually doesn’t save 5 frames here, fast accel only save 5 frames in the first and third room of 8-4. In this situation a perfect fast accel would save 2 frames.
11:24 You actually don’t release the b button or do a 1 frame jump for this clip since the pipe is 3 blocks tall.
Other than that great video!
>”453 is POSSIBLE!”
>”Are you trolling?”
>Puts in Grand Dad at 1:50
>”okay, trolling.”
Love the video, I think you should use the term "segmented" instead of "spliced" though. I know they mean the same thing, but splice has cheating connotations
Either one works. Both have cheating connotations for some, like me. But with the right context, can be understood without cheating assumptions
hi! im super new to the SMB speedrunning community; could you please explain what segmented runs mean?
@@marioman1351 thank you so much! it was really well explained :)
I'm honestly more surprised by how similar the All-Stars version is than I am by how different it is.
I assumed it was rebuilt from the ground up, and everything from physics to enemy behavior would be slightly different.
The fact that even something like the flagpole glitch is still possible, let alone has most the same setups, is mind blowing to me.
man at the start i though i got a different video and my headphones were messed up, but i realised i was trolled
I called the possibility of 4:53 when WR was still at 4:57, lol
Thanks for proving me right after all this time, dude.
"Four in.... SIXTEEN". Seamless edit. No notes ; ). Seriously though... great video.
the fact that some iconic glitches like the flagpole glitch were left in reminds me of a question ive had for a while
if someone were to code a game with speedrun glitches deliberately put in, such as knowingly putting a tiny gap in a wall, would that defeat the purpose? i mean part of speedrunning is to solve the puzzle of the fastest run, so would intentional glitches break that motive?
Not really. At the end of the day the main purpose of a speedrun is finish the game the fastest way possible using both intentional and unintentional mechanics, at least in an any%. I don't see why something as a "intentional glitch" would defeat that purpose.
Given the absolute gem of a game that Celeste is and the enduring popularity of its speedgame, no it would absolutely not break that motive if done right.
you’re lowkey a top tier speedtuber. always love the vids. another job well done
as a big fan and never player of the NES version, this is wonderful to learn! it's amazing the versions in are actually so close, if it wasn't for Speedrunning, I think we would assume them to be identical beyond aesthetic change
I was struggling for an whole year to complete super Mario bro and here they complete the game before my potty break
@@martymcfly88mph35 there are checkpoints in this game, just not in castles and w8
While I do like this video, I do think it's very clickbaity as the thumbnail depicts SMB1 when it's really SMB1AS. As 4:53 has been proven physically impossible on SMB1, you're making people think some new discovery/framerule had been found, only to realize (in disappointment) its in all-stars, and I'm pretty sure everyone knows 4:53 is possible in all-stars.
Well yes but actually no,the vídeo says "SMB 4:53 Is possible *kinda*"
I'm honestly surprised that a lot of the same tech exists in both the original SMB1 and the All Stars version. You'd think that since it's running on an entirely different engine, stuff like pipe clips, the flagpole glitch, framerules, subpixels, and the 4-2 wrong warp would be complete non-factors or at least work very differently to the original. Hell, even the BBG still exists, though it isn't helpful like in the original. And the human limit for each game is within 1-2 seconds of each other!
SMB1 in All Stars is a VERY faithful remake.
All Stars isn’t a remake per se, it’s actually closer to a remaster. It was built off of the original games’ source code. That’s why the physics are identical to the originals, the same glitches still work, etc, because they’re actually just the same games with a new coat of paint. The glitches that don’t work aren’t a result of an engine change or anything like that, it’s because they were manually patched out.
The most notable gameplay difference is the brick physics in SMB1/Lost Levels, which was actually a mistake on the developers’ part.
Fun fact at around 3:07 he says the original super Mario Bros is not continuable after you lose all your lives but few people know that when you lose all your lives in the original super Mario Bros if you hold down the start button until you hit the select screen then select the game again you can continue from where you left off
1:49 that took me so offguard x3, i did not expect GRAND DAD
anyways i might be a bit spoiled but putting in indicators and animations when you're explaining stuff would be really neat
this sort of concept is really funny and interesting! two games i grew up on, mario bros 3 advance on the gba and mario 64 ds, have some iconic glitches fixed and yet their speedruns and TASes are just as insane
for example, you cant blj on the ds but you can groudpound through the floor in many places lmao
So glad YT Recommended has been showing me your videos as of late. You're making really solid content. I thoroughly enjoyed!
Keep up the good work dude! It’s nice to see someone who puts this much effort into a video grow from when I first found your channel
i cant have been the only person who was incredibly distracted by the grand dad theme playing in the background
Imagine there was a bus driving Mario from 1-1 to 8-4 🙂

Should have just made the video about Super Mario Bros All Stars version without the cheap clickbait. Different game, different category, different time.
Same game (with very minor changes), same exact category in terms of objectives and rules, basically the same time. Dont be pedantic, theres so many worse examples of clickbait. The comparison is relevant to discussion.
@@floppydysk The games are nearly identical in the context of casual play. In the context of speedrunning and second barriers, they are completely different. This is why they are different categories on speedrunning leaderboards. The original Super Mario Bros is by far the most popular and well-known version, which is why the title is deceptive. Storster knows this and uses this to get more views (i.e. clickbait). It's like making a video titled "The day a 3:30 mile was run (kinda)" and it's about a country where they have a slightly shorter mile and there's a runner there who did that mile in 3:30. It's technically correct but misleading and disingenuous.
@@Krithalith 100% agree, from a speedrunning perspective they are completely different games. Storster discusses as much when he mentions things like their unique physics or the plant hitboxes. Even the thumbnail makes it seem like he's talking about the NES version. I'm not mad about the clickbait, in fact there are some very cool videos I wouldn't have ever clicked on without clickbait, but I lost interest as soon as I realized this was about the All Stars version.

Great analysis video! Personally, I'm excited for the possibility of a 4:53! Thanks for uploading!
I assume it was summoning salt that started it, but the whole "BUT WHAT IF I TOLD YOU..." has become such a cliche of speedrunning content.
All we need is glitch and its gg
Thank you for using Panic Restaurant music ❤️
is that FLEENSTONES I hear?
Let’s blow this category up
This is the first subpixel definition I've heard. Thanks!
That’s fascinating. I was surprised that you ended the video saying 452 was human possible!
If I had to choose the final WR, I'm guessing 0.0 seconds, and it'll be some hotplate/credits warp skip. Sad.
have you ever seen the super mario brothers 3 tas where they credits warp before the game even gets to show the title screen
Theres no credits warp in smb1. Its the most studied and glitch hunted game of all time, just not gonna happen.
@@floppydysk well you never now
It also requires a flipped bit or two from cosmic rays
until we just start timing until the flagpole touch
Theres no flagpole in 8-4
A video explaining NSMB DS Any% TAS by Hartman
Interesting 🤔
4:53 super mario bros 1986 is barely possible
1:1 0 framerules to save
1:2 0 framerules to save
4:1 0 framerules to save
4:2 1 framerule to save, so you do more reverse movement and two reverse jumps after pipe to save by one frame.
8:1 - 8:3 9 framerules to save
8:4 1-2 frames to save
So a 4:53.676
9 framerules 8-1 - 8-3?
Imagine a world record of 0:01 achieved in Super Mario Odyssey because of a Russian hacker trying to get eshop balance but absolutely sucks that would make sense with Florida man
Underrated
Aww shit, here we go again.
I have downloaded all stars on the wii, and it looks just like the original.
SNES games on Wii run around a percent slower, so it is worse for speedrunning
ok hold on 4:55 was done in 2018? feels like a year ago still
Streaming on UA-cam now? Hoo! There's somethin' new.

4:51 is possible on the PAL version of the actual smb1. And without using L+R 4:52

no. NO
Why don’t people do that even on the nes version???
dang storster you’re at 12k wtf, good job
GRAND DAD??
Those edits were creepy! lol
What a video!!!
He did 3 fast acsellls
GRANDAD
I have questions about the PAL NES version. I vaguely recall seeing a TAS of that version that was faster than NTSC?
and you end the game with a bomb, 4:52 wow.
So why don’t people clip through the staircase for the warp area on 4-2 in the same way the clip through the pipe at the end of 1-2 to get to the warp are??? That would save a lot of time, I think, though I am far from an expert with this stuff.
Well I found it ua-cam.com/video/nug4MgZ7pS0/v-deo.html
I’m curious about the message from big daddy server owner underneath the face cam - is it for inspiration, or are they friends?
They’re friends
he said that in 2020 after i failed 8-2 to going too fast and getting fireworks for the third time lmao, also yes we're friends
4:53😨
Brute forcing every single combination of inputs (for at max 5 minutes) would be slow, but it will mean we can figure out the best time.
it would be pretty much impossible, as each frame multiplies the # of possible games by X amount. it's kind of like trying to roll snake eyes on two dice 30,000 times in a row, each roll makes it exponentially harder, so... impossible.
That would take about 10^38,000 times longer than the age of the universe. not happening
So the actual reason for the timesave is just that there's less framerules, right? Or are there other reasons that make it faster even on top of that?
I piss my pants
Great video mate! The research required must have been incredible.
I wish more ppl would speed run this version.
"4:53 is out of question for the current moment"
See ya in 2023 :-)
Is it impossible to walljump on the left side in the first Pipeworld? or is it just slower? I mean if u drop and jump from the left wall u could start steering to the right eralier, but it s to late then i guess? :D (i mean for the Left+right tas.. it needs 1 frame haha xD
LOVE THIS
It’s actually possible with a tas
Very clickbait but otherwise good video
Another banger.
4:52???
what the hell
4:53 is still impossible in SMB1 NES and its possible on All-Stars please change the Title
no way :o
He did say “kinda” so I think that qualifies as not a full clickbait moment. The title still is clearly made to garner clicks but it isn’t wrong and it is what the video is about
Impossible
calling TAS "a computer doing it" is disingenuous
Ywnbaw + 52% + dilate
wait, does this count in an actual leaderboard just like other games?
The All Star version does have its own separate category under the Super Mario Bros. Board yes.
@@Storster thanks :)
