“Say Her Name: Dr. Susan Moore.” Black Female Doctors Condemn Racial Disparities in Healthcare

  • When Black doctor Susan Moore died from COVID-19 after posting a video from her hospital bed describing racist treatment by medical staff, her chilling message was compared to the video of George Floyd begging for his life as he was killed by Minneapolis police. We speak to two leading Black women doctors fighting racial disparities in healthcare who wrote The Washington Post opinion piece, “Say her name: Dr. Susan Moore.” “It is a typical and ongoing devaluation of our lives and distrust of our word,” says Dr. Camara Phyllis Jones, a family physician and former president of the American Public Health Association. Dr. Joia Crear-Perry, president of the National Birth Equity Collaborative, says Dr. Moore’s complaints about being disrespected by medical staff are “really familiar” to her. “We’ve found that Black patients, Black birthing people are not valued; they’re not listened to,” she says.

Far more than two have gathered in prayer and NOTHING has changed- systematic racism is still running 🏃‍♂️ amock...on steroids! When the acupuncturist arrived, the other doctors informed him that he is not allowed to treat my mom. I was devastated. I begged the medical board to allow him to treat my mom. @@tubester4567 It is absolutely apparent to me for many years that men have these problems first because as part of their self definition AS MEN they must suppress all emotions except anger. All others are are " not masculine", hence they never learned to deal with their emotions. There's only two paths left to them with their building explosive pain or anger: violence or substance abuse to provide some pressure valve for the severe emotion. Secondly, men's self definition that they must always be strong, capable, successful so frequently is headed for a conflict with reality that again when they find themselves not successful in the world in the world with respect to those gender defined male traits they have only two pressure valve outlets: violence and substance abuse. When men relationships fail with women it is so often these lifelong self definitions of masculinity that has made having a healthy truly loving relationship with another impossible. It is amazing that there are a good number of men who do have good loving relationships with another, but when I see this I typically see a man who is not in strict self compliance with dictates of male gender self definition and he has either had a parent that was very loving and taught him that he should healthfully love himself and others and a nurturant freedom to express his emotions healthily. On some occasions he did not receive that sort of love and insurance from a parent and his soul cried out for it and he sooner or later crossed paths with someone who taught him this and he had the sort of personality that made him receptive to learning and expressing this mode of being from another source or at a later date. The core to men's deepest emotional problems and expressions of violence in the world is their male gender self definitions. That said, our earliest primitive histories involved constant war and violence between men in order to survive amongst themselves driven by their physical strength, their strong sexual drive, and very much so testosterone. The development of tribal competition and rulers of countries fostered continual wars and the demand for men who's primary definition as men was as fierce soldiers. This is what has fueled the male self definition. Later this is continually fostered in the American males obsession with competitive sports - a healthier less violent combat. This generalized to men's s competitiveness within ultra- capitalism. He strives to be seen as financially powerful, he strives to be seen as a good breadwinner, he strives to be successful in his relationship with women or " his" woman. When those realities are not realized he feels weak, self hatred, emasculated, emotional pain about why his relationship has failed. There are only two outlets for him: violence or substance abuse - OR SUICIDE. This, I submit is what we see. It is time we help men expand and heal their self definitions as men. There are many groups of men all over the country who are actively and self consciously getting together and doing hard self work on these issues. Our youngest generations of young men- most I think- are already being brought up with and choosing a new self definition to free themselves and make themselves much happier people with more ways to deal with stress than only violence, substance abuse and suicide. This gives me hope for the world.

@@aliciastanley5582 So you're saying men are systemically oppressed by society because of the way they were raised.?
My point was just because people have different outcomes, doesnt mean its somebody elses fault.
I dont think most men care about being top dog, most men just want to have value and a purpose in life. Most men just want a humble home and to live comfortably.
Men have much more varied interests and hobbies than women, men like to build things, make things, learn technology, fix cars, start businesses. Most men who play sports play in humble suburban leagues with no expectation of making it to the big leagues.
I think you have a kind of stereotypical simplistic view of men. You also kind of assume all men have problems, when only a few % end up in jail or in trouble.
It also doesnt explain why, as society becomes more "progressive", drug addiction and mental health problems has increased for both genders.
Many men of this generation have been raised by single mothers and we know a kid from a single mother household has a much bigger risk of criminality, drug addiction and jail.

@@tubester4567 I don't think men are systematically oppressed. I think men systematically oppress. But the gender self definitions embedded in our culture foster a limited self growth for men as human beings and this causes great emotional distress for them personally and for everyone else around them. The amount of criminality and violence expressed by men is highly common in our culture. If you are unaware of this I don't know what to say to you. I've studied the statistics and I don't think this is a stereotype but it is a fact. Individuals vary on a bell curve but aggregates of behaviors are known.

In conservative times pre-1960's there was very little crime, violence, addictions, homelessness or mental illness. Nobody locked their house doors in the 1950's.
It sounds like you've been reading too much left-wing feminist theory,
Women have the same rates of suicide as men, even more, they just succeed less at suicide.
Women in the working class tend to go after bad boy type men which skews the numbers on abuse, bad boy tend to have many female partners in their lifetime but even so, the vast majority of men are law abiding responsible citizens who have never been arrested.

"If I were white, I wouldn't have to go through that". Not quite exactly.
If you were a white doctor who was known to have provided quality care to minority patients in a white supremacist zone, say Fargo, ND, or Mpls, MN, that is exactly what you would have gone through, hospitalized either in South Carolina while visiting a sick relative there or back in Mpls fighting for your life from what should have been a simple cellulitis that was floridly mismanaged by the South Carolina medical staff. I am a doctor. I was targeted by a hate group starting when I became the specialist doc for a child whose father happened to look like President Obama. (No relation most likely. Lots of people look alike.) The community's racist hatred for President Obama carried over to hatred for an innocent handicapped little African American child whose father happened to look like the President. And from there, the hatred was directed to that child's white doctor providing appropriate care for the child and family, as I had provided to every patient I saw, according to my Hippocratic and Baptismal Oaths. I began to be targeted by a hate group when I became that child's doctor.
During this period following my being the doctor for this particular child, I was nearly killed when, while visiting a sick relative in South Carolina, I became inexplicably ill with a dangerous and fast moving skin cellulitis that put me into the hospital there for a week. After a week of bad care in a hospital in South Carolina, where they misidentified the germ as gram negative when it was clearly strep, a medstudent level mistake, and as the staff in South Carolina were treating me as if I were some kind of criminal when I was actually a doctor visiting a relative who had just been diagnosed with cancer, I reached out to friends from my church in Minnesota who were retired military. They would understand a life threatening situation when told about it. After I called them, terrified for my life and with no skin on my legs from the infection and the bad medical care that had taken the skin off both legs from ankle to knee, these friends took action. They got on the phone to the hospital in South Carolina, told the hospital staff that I was on the Altar Guild at church so that the nursing staff would stop treating me like some juvenile drug-addicted delinquent criminal, got me discharged even though there was no skin on my legs and I had to care for my own bandages, told me to "build a nest" for myself for one night in a hotel in South Carolina until I could get a flight back to Minnesota, and referred me to a hospital in Minneapolis where I could be seen by one of their medical colleagues who was, himself, a former medical military officer, now in civilian practice.
In Minnesota the next day, I checked in to a hospital there to be treated for the dangerous cellulitis that had taken the skin off both legs, from ankle to knee, developing suddenly, while visiting family in South Carolina. However, the retired military doc was not on service for my first few days in the hospital in Minneapolis. Instead I got treated by some Russian emigre doctoretta who had perhaps half my age and a quarter of my skills. Though the antibiotics given me in Minneapolis were more effective than the incorrect ones chosen in South Carolina, the nursing staff deliberately "blew" my IV with every infusion. I was having at least three to four IV's a day, and each time required a half dozen "sticks" to start a new working IV.
By the time my church friends' former military colleague was back on service at the hospital and got to see me as his patient, I had been there for several days/ Though I was not complaining about how the nurses just happened to "blow" my IV several times a day, necessitating resticking my arms and even my legs, at least twenty times a day in an effort to get a working IV, I was starting to feel nauseous, slightly queasy, and to lose my appetite, inexplicably. When the former military doc returned to service and sized up the situation, he palpated my abdomen and his face changed. He said, "Her infection is clear. Her daily fevers to 104 are because she's allergic to one of the antibiotic drugs you're giving her three times a day. Stop all IV's. Give her 2 days of oral amoxicillin, and send her home. The skin on her legs can regrow at home." What he didn't say out loud to the hospital staff but had ascertained was true, was that, having, in effect, been subjected to torture several times a day in the form of repeated needlesticks in the repeated daily attempts to restart the deliberately ruined IV that the nurses ruined on purpose each time they pretended to flush it, I was developing a syndrome he'd seen before in POW's. Captured soldiers and others in captivity can, at times, develop micro-perforations of the gut induced by unrelenting physical stress that included torture. This causes a peritonitis that kills them, thus freeing them in death from facing further torture. This had been happening to me without my knowing it nor any staff being aware of it. However, had the situation continued, in another day or two, I would have been dying of fully blown peritonitis caused by the nurses' deliberate torture treatment in the form of twenty to forty needle sticks a day, caused by their deliberately failed attempts to secure a working IV. (Nobody is that bad at flushing IV's unless they mean to be ruining them several times a day.)
The 2 days of oral amox prescribed by this former military specialist doctor before I was to be discharged, were to allow the gut perfs to heal before sending me home.
This assault on my life in the form of deliberately bad nursing and medical care (until the arrival of the former military doctor on service who was known to my friends at church) happened because I had become known in the community for providing good care to minority patients. The hate campaign continued, with slander, car crashes, home invasions, job loss via slander, and all sorts of rumors spread about me that were floridly untrue, for years after my slow recovery from that seemingly spontaneous skin infection. The attacks and slander and terror, in my home and whenever I go out shopping, continue to this day, occurring most recently...two days ago when I went out to get groceries. I continue to try to restore my career and reputation in the face of ongoing attacks from this domestic hate and terror group that seems specifically to target women doctors, and to target any doctor who saves minority lives. I did at one point attempt to phone Democracy Now to tell them about this situation when I was being actively stalked in Boston in 2017 , but did not get through to anyone to make a useful connection.
How long has this been going on in my life? The African American child with the dad who happened to look like President Obama became my patient in 2012. The domestic terror started soon after and continues to this day, along with every kind of slander you can imagine, car crashes, home invasions, professional slander and blackballing, and the minions of the hate group following me to assault me chemically whenever I leave the house to go shopping. My lawyer has only partially succeeded in clearing the hate group's slanderfilth from my professional record. As it happens, I have always lead a squeaky clean life in every regard, like many women who become teachers and doctors: no cigarettes, no alcohol, never used a drug, conventional lifestyle, conventional friends, active in my church, committed to my work as a doctor and to keeping my Baptismal Oath as a Christian to reject evil, including racism, with God's help.
So, no, it's probably not entirely because Dr. Susan Moore was Black that she was targeted. I'm as white as it gets, and I was targeted similarly and am lucky to be alive. It's likely also because, as a doctor, Dr. Moore DARED to Save Black Lives, DARED to do her job, DARED to keep her oaths, both as a doctor and as an adult member of whatever religion she practiced to serve good and reject evil, rejecting the evils of racism and illness with God's help (as we say in my church).. A minor, yet significant difference: Dr. Moore was likely specifically targeted for her works as a doctor, as well as for her identity.
Having only narrowly survived a similar situation some years ago, narrowly surviving with my life through the intervention of a doctor with the knowledge and skill to recognize that I was about to be killed and to discharge me in time to save my life (and having had my career devastated to this day by the same hate group's slander on purpose and on paper, beginning with that episode of their successful assault on both my health and my career,) I believe it was likely Dr. Moore's Effectiveness at saving lives and her Works for Good that got her targeted by a hate group to receive bad care on purpose and be killed, not merely the color of her skin. The battle lines are, sadly, all too clear, as Pastor Robert Lowell pointed out in his nineteenth century hymn, Once to Every Man and Nation. I believe it was likely the content of Dr. Moore's good character as revealed by her outstanding good works as a doctor that sealed her fate with the hate group types on that hospital staff, in addition to the color of her skin.
Summary: The racist hate groups don't merely target Black people. In addition, they specifically are targeting DOCTORS known to save Black lives. This is not sporadic. It is a trend. It would help me and my colleagues if you could look into the situation further, because I know of not one but several doctors who have been so targeted by hate groups.

As a person with a disability, this is TOO DAMN often that people are treated like this. I grew up being told children like me don't feel pain. Had procedures done without medication, without anesthesia. Been denied care entirely, or questioned until blue in the face, OR given pain meds just to get rid of me. There's rarely a middle ground, and when I find it, I hold onto it White-knuckle for as long as I can, because our lives are in these people's hands.... and too often it's taken for granted, and people don't know "what to do with us" and we are tossed aside, ignored, or left in pain. It's a deadly game, and while it is too often imparted upon people of color, ANYONE seen as "less than" is a consequence of that education passed down from older Gen doctors to impressionable young staff who dare not speak up, so we die from it.
