It is a cool idea and I've always wanted that to be a ride. But It doesn't really fit the New Orleans or Frontierland themes of either park though. At least at Disneyland the ride is by New Orleans Square and PATF is set in New Orleans. They should just build that in Adventureland.

Actually, funny story about the pre-lapbar era of Splash Mountain: I was riding it when I was 3 or 4 (2004 for context) and I wanted to dance to Zip A Dee Doo Dah at the end of the ride since it was a fun song and there was a backup in the loading station so I stood up and someone came over the loudspeaker to tell me to sit down and I got really embarrassed 😂 So I like to think I somewhat contributed to the installation of the lapbars there 😅

Or maybe earlier in the ride you went up the steps of the palace. Then you are just going around seeing different scenes in the palace, with maybe a few slight drops and rises. And then it levels out as you enter a dark spooky area. You hear "Pull the lever Kronk!" and as the ground seems to drop beneath you you hear her scream "WRONG LEVEEERR!!" as you go down the big drop in almost total darkness.

I finally got to watch “Song of the South” for myself not to long ago. As a black person, I understand why the movie can’t fly in today’s times of racial profiling and injustice. But as a Disney fan, I was able to separate the problems with the movie and enjoy for what it was: A man telling life lessons to kids through the use of the Br’er characters. Interesting fact, “Song of the South won two Oscars: Best Song (Zip-a-Dee-Do-Dah) and an Honorary Oscar for James Baskett’s portrayal of Uncle Remus. When I first saw that Disney was going to reimagine Splash Mountain to Princess and the Frog, I was upset. To me, it meant the 3 Mountain Challenge at Disneyland or Disney World wouldn’t be the same. But after some self-reflecting, I understand why Disney need to do it. Plus, Disney is known to reimagining their theme park rides all the time, and sometimes for the better. (Example. Malestrom in the Norway Pavilion to Frozen Ever After, The Universe of Energy into Guardians of Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, etc.) As Disney fans, we all have to remember that Disney parks will never be complete as long as there is imagination in the world. So, let’s all go ride Splash Mountain one last time before we go down the bayou with Tiana and Naveen.

Can we still call it Splash Mountain, though? It's a good name, and the ride was consciously made not to call back to the movie's sketchy parts. I'm perfectly happy with retheming to Princess and the Frog, but Splash Mountain is iconic, and I think most of the world has walked around thinking it doesn't have a movie connection just like Thunder Mountain doesn't. Retheming it isn't going to take it's previous life away, in fact it's spotlighting it. I think the fact that they could keep the same name and only make the ride better says something positive about accepting your past with it's flaws and building a better future.

Its people of varying sizes most of whom are fat. In Polynesian cultures big is seen as strong and beautiful. Lilo even comments on this by saying "aren't they beautiful"
As for why she takes pictures all the time well as a social worker (special classification) I believe it is because she lost her parents at such a young age and the only thing she has left of them is a picture. She understands that memories are precious. After all Ohana means family and family means no one gets left behind or forgotten. And what better way to hold onto the memory of someone than with a picture.
Also as a bonus did you ever wonder why she is obsessed with feeding a fish peanut butter well "Pudge controls the weather"
Pudge is seen in the beginning of the movie with the sandwich. He is the state fish known as the
Humuhumunukunukuapua`a (trigger fish) which us associated with the DemiGod Kama Pua'a who possesses the powers of commanding the rain and waters.
So why feed the state fish? Well her parents died in a storm. She feeds a fish in hopes that no one else she loves will be taken in the same way that her parents were. So NO Myrtle she's not weird she's just super caring.

    Fun fact:
A lot of the original rides at Disney World, including the three mountains, were manufactured by the very popular Arrow Dynamics. Many of the Arrow rides at Disney represented the cutting edge of roller coaster capabilities when they opened, and are a huge part of the way the roller coaster industry has grown into what it is today. Arrow Dynamics went on to make innovations such as the corkscrew inversion and a unique new track style that is the basis for modern steel coasters, but Arrow likely would not have grown into such a prominent influence without Disney. Arrow Dynamics eventually filed for bankruptcy in 2001 after manufacturing their last ride (X at Six Flags Magic Mountain) which was the first 4D coaster. Their assets were absorbed to become part of the manufacturer S&S, which still produces coasters today, including the popular 4D coaster model known as the Freespin.
In summary, coaster enthusiasts owe a lot of what we enjoy to Disney for giving Arrow the space to make innovations that brought the coaster industry to where it is today.

My mother, who was born in 1940, loved Song of the South. She would have first seen it as a six-year-old and fell in love with the music. While Disney hasn't created any legal ways to view the film in the U.S. it is possible to find it. Someone (and I am admitting nothing) obtained a copy for her to watch a few years ago. Last summer my mother had been in failing health and had been moving back and forth between a rehab and regular hospital. I came to visit her just after she had asked my brother if he could put the movie on for her. I got there just as he was telling her that the Internet said the film was racist. I told her that if she wanted to watch it I could get it for her, but she declined. She died a few weeks later. I really wish it had been possible for her to watch the film legally before she passed away. I understand why the film is problematic, but I think it could be made available with warnings and educational content prior to the film, the way HBO Max is treating Gone With the Wind. I mean if it's possible to watch Birth of a Nation, Song of the South should be available, at least to elderly people that fell in love with the movie as children.

Song of the South is set post Civil War. Therefore, Uncle Remus is not a slave. For those who have seen the movie, and this is a spoiler warning so you might not want to read on further if you've never seen it
Toward the end, Uncle Remus plans on leaving the plantation and is even taking his suitcase over to a carriage which will take him away from the plantation. And this is all in broad daylight with people around. This is not something a slave could just do. And if Uncle Remus were a slave, he would not dare leave the plantation in broad daylight. He would sneak out in the middle of the night when everyone's asleep.

Something to note James Baskett received an honorary Oscar for his performance, in 1948. Only seven years after the first African-American actor to actually win the award Hattie McDaniel. For her equally controversial role in Gone with the Wind. (She also has a role in Song of the South.)

Gone With the Wind is nothing without Hattie McDaniel. She may have almost always played a maid, but she always did it with class and sass. When asked why she didn't hold out for higher profile roles, her response was that she'd rather make $700 a month (or week, don't remember exactly) playing a maid than $7 actually being one. In other words, it paid the bills. Unfortunately she was looked down upon in her lifetime for it, but I admire her for that.

Ok so fun story: my school’s music department went to Disney World last spring (2019). We spent a day at each of the 4 main kingdoms (and a short half-day at Disney Springs). Our final full day was spent at Magical Kingdom. My group got fast passes for Splash Mountain at 8:15-8:30ish. It was really fun, but we really wanted to ride Space Mountain, so we rushed to the EXACT OPPOSITE Side of the park so we would get in the line and ride it before our 10:00PM curfew to return to our hotel. We made it at roughly 8:45-9:00, and we got about halfway through the line at 9:30 when we were concerned we weren’t going to make it through the ride before we had to return to the hotels, and we may need to leave the line in order to get back in time. HOWEVER, we eventually saw the theater and orchestra teacher behind us, so we got really relieved. We even kind of passed each other in the lines and it was a really funny moment. We had to be 15 minutes away from getting onto the ride when it BROKE. To compensate, the park staff gave us free fast passes that were active for 24 hours, but they were kinda useless to us since we didn’t have enough time to ride another ride before we had to go back and the next day would be spent in Disney Springs, not a regular kingdom park. Regardless of how frustrating and annoying it was that night, every time my group talks about it now we laugh really hard. That was actually a great trip.

I must admit, I’m a little sad they’re changing Splash Mountain. My family owns Song of the South (though I’m not sure how we got it), and I always thought it was a cute movie. I guess I could understand how some might find it racially insensitive, but I don’t think it was really a racist movie. It was just the story of a black man teaching a white boy fun stories that were portrayed as cute cartoons. It was really light hearted and fun, so I really don’t understand why people think it’s so racist, and I’ll be sad to see Splash Mountain change. I still love Princess and the Frog though, so I’m sure I’ll still love the ride, even though I’ll miss the old characters :)

Uncle Remus and His friends is one of the oldest books in my collection, my edition was printed in 1914.
It was one of the books in my bedtime story rotation read by my mother. (She would also read me Aesop's Fables (Still have that one also, printed 1892), among other books).
So when Song of the South came to theaters in 1973 (drive-in, no way my parents take me to a theater at 5), we went to see to Song of the South/The Aristocats double bill. I've also seen it a few times (at least once more) on Wonderful World of Disney.
Granted I haven't seen it since the 70s, but I don't understand the hate.
As a small impressionable child, that movie gave me positive impressions of black people.
With Uncle Remus being especially kind, well-meaning, and wise.
While simultaneously giving me a negative impression of slavery and racism.
And as far as the language used to tell the stories. The whole point is that it is historically accurate to the vernacular of the time, in the dialect of the original storytellers.

Plus, I try not to judge things based on modern sensitivities. I may avoid some things because of my own modern views, but I don't see the point in condemning someone or something for being a product of their time.

Sir Tomerok 98 there really were no undertones in the ride though. I’ll give you the movie and the live action parts. But this ride took out the racist parts and shows the story of an escaped slave outsmarting and escaping from the bumbling slaveowners. Nothing racist about it. I also agree with you on looking at things from the past in the lens of what was socially acceptable for the times. Back in the 1940’s, there was almost no representation of African Americans that didn’t paint them as some kind of inferior, below intelligent being or as the comic relief. This movie portrays Uncle Remus, a black man, as the hero of the story which did NOT happen back when this movie was made. If we want to look back at this movie as not aging well, it’s perfectly acceptable and appropriate. We also need to look back at when it was made and what were the norms back then. Walt Disney also pushed to get James Baskett an Oscar for his performance and was the first black man to win one and one of the only people to win an honorary Oscar for a single performance

I have mixed feelings on the proposed changes. On one hand, unless you know where the ride originated, no one would have any idea about the racially insensitive origins. Also, I don't like things being changed just to appease the mob. On the other hand, Disneyland is always changing. When the movies came out, they changed pirates too (wasn't a fan of that either).
All that being said, I like the idea of changing the ride to Princess and the Frog. It's a great movie, beautifully done, and one of my favorites. And that whole section of the park can be reimagined. The hungry bear restaurant can be changed to Tiana's Place, for example. At Disneyland at least, not sure about Florida.

"Princess and the Frog' will work out wonderful for Disneyland due to its location(New Orleans Square) and I'm excited for the refresh of the ride! However, in my opinion, it won't really work here in Disney World due to the fact that it's in Frontierland. So here's my suggestion- "Davey Crocket's Frontier Adventure' You can keep the log aspect of it, while in keeping with the theme of the land:)
Also, and I might be alone in this, while I have seen the movie and there are multiple bootleg copies out there, I feel like Disney needs to release 'Song of the South' for a one time showing (with a disclaimer in front of it and a behind the scenes of the movie and how they are going to change the ride) on ABC as part of a "Wonderful World of Disney' special. This way, people can watch the movie for themselves and formulate their own opinion instead of just hearsay. Disney has kept this movie in the dark for so long and people have been so curious about it. Again, it's just an idea and I'm probably the only one who thinks it's a good idea.

Some of the characters from Song of the south - At least Br'er Rabbit, Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear - are very regularly featured characters in "The L'il Bad Wolf" comics. Br'er Bear especially occurs as a side character extremely often in these, and for me he is definitely one of the more recognizeable and, despite him not being very interesting, likeable characters in Disney.
So while they originate from a controversial film (and its a shame they did), I'd say the animated characters themselves have largely moved on from being associated with these controversies.
Also their designs are simple and cool and feels very Disney and I like them.

I went to the Disney Resort in Hilton Head/ Longview Island ans there was a cast member there named Bleu Crabbe who, when Disney had a campfire for s’mores, he would sit there and tell us where we could get the movie. It was really weird. I distinctly remember him doing it twice. He said it was in a shop in Savanna Georgia. I remember that it was in Savanna because my grandma lives there. I know that Disney stopped selling the film in America but you could get it in the U.K. Your grandpa probably got it in some bargain bin or something before Disney stopped selling it.

I think it’s a very sweet movie that shows blacks and whites can get along no matter what time this movie takes place and he was just trying to make the boy happy. I don’t think Walt Disney had any intention of making it a racial movie. It’s supposed to be a family friendly movie.

  • @KingFern03

I always felt like the stories and songs from Song of the South were all about just outsmarting the slave catchers. I think zip a dee doo dah was meant to be like the day they were freed. I mean what a wonderful day that would’ve been. Brer Rabbit also did outsmart the Fox and Bear to get away to safety. Much like a slave would just outsmart their slave owner to escape. So I never saw anything racist or them just glorifying slavery

    • @TECfan1
      @TECfan1 4 роки тому +8

Well, it takes place in Southern Reconstruction which is after the slaves were freed, yes. But the reason it's seen as controversial is because even after slaves were freed, many of them could not find work anywhere else and were basically forced to continue the work they did before. Many of them were paid very little money, and still treated badly. So the issue isn't what the film does show, but what it doesn't show. It kind of romanticizes this era by making it appear as though the black workers love to be there and were now "really happy".

'Song of The South' isn't really racially insensitive. It takes place after the American Civil War, so the African("black") people in it are not slaves, and the movie is about the friendship between a young "white" boy and an old "black" man. It's a positive movie with positive messages. The only reasons that anybody thinks that this movie is racially insensitive are that they haven't done their research and assume that the film takes place before or during the Civil War, and the fact that Disney, thanks to Michael Eisner and Bob Iger, has not given the movie any kind of official release since 1986(other than some VHS and Laserdisc releases in certain countries), which only helps to perpetuate the notion that the movie is racially insensitive. If Disney had released the movie on VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray worldwide, there would be very few, if any, people who think that 'Song of The South' is racially insensitive. Is it a great movie? No, but it is a good movie with a positive message of friendship, and it deserves to be defended and seen.
For a movie of it's era, 'Song of The South' was actually pretty progressive in portraying multi-racial friendships when you consider that it was released during the segregation era of the American South. Disney needs to release the film on Blu-ray and make it available on Disney Plus, with bonus features included, including a feature-length documentary on the film's creation, release, and legacy. Also, to anyone who thinks that Walt Disney was racist, he wasn't. The "black" actors who were in the film were not allowed to attend the film's world premiere at the Fox Theater in Atlanta,GA, but that wasn't Walt's fault. It was 1946 and segregation in the American South was a thing by that point, as I've already mentioned. Walt hated the fact that the "black" actors weren't allowed to attend the premiere, but, obviously, there was nothing that he could do about it. Walt made it possible for James Baskett(the actor who played Uncle Remus and Brer Fox) to get an Oscar for his portrayal of Uncle Remus. #ReleaseSongofTheSouth and #BringbackSplashMountain.

TamTroll Non of the Br’er Rabbit stuff is racist from the ride or the movie for that matter. All the animated parts from the ride and movie are straight adaptions from African American folklore and fables told by slaves. The live action parts of Song of the South are the parts that haven’t aged well as it presents this peaceful racial harmony between blacks and whites and the idea that blacks loved working on the plantations even after slavery. The ride removes these racist and outdated ideas and purely shows the story of a slave (Br’er Rabbit) outsmarting and gaining his freedom from the bumbling slaveholders (Br’er Fox and Br’er Bear). Them falling under pressure is completely ridiculous because the criticism for this ride comes from complete misunderstanding and ignorance

I have loved that movie so much as a child. It was released in America because I had one of the original releases. I'm not particularly sensitive to race and as a child I only understood that the black man was very wise and had suffered but choose to make a cultural sorry like Briar Rabbit a powerful lesson for the next generation. Only after being a teenager did I understand that he had been in slavery and his cherry disposition was an artifice but that still didn't take away the meaning. Bad things happen, you get into trouble, and try to rise above or be better than you were. I still find it so powerful.

  • @saraross8396
    @saraross8396 4 роки тому +6

The movie is about a young boy having difficulty dealing with his parents' separation. Uncle Remus gives him support and life lessons through his Brer Rabbit tales. This is what he teaches:
    - You can wind up in more trouble by trying to run away from your problems instead of staying home and dealing with them.
    - Sometimes intelligence is better than brute force. "Being little, without much strength, sometimes you gotta use your head instead of your foots."
    - Go to your "laughing place" when you're feeling down.
At its core it's a wonderful movie with excellent performances by James Baskett and the incomparable Hattie McDaniel. It saddens me that people want to erase this like they want to erase "Gone With the Wind" as that movie would be nothing without Hattie's academy award winning performance. Similarly, James Baskett is what makes this movie. The things that make people say it's controversial are barely there, not even the focus of the movie. I understand the concern, but I don't think it's as bad as they make it out to be. How do I know? I've seen the movie myself.
