    The biggest issue here is the disconnect between Disney movie fans and Disney Parks fans. For those who love the movies, Figment will not be recognizable, but for those who love the parks, Figment is a beloved classic character. And honestly, I don't think every attraction in the Disney parks needs to have a connection to a movie--they're fine as their own standalone stories, including that of Figment.

      What I liked about the Disney parks itself is of how they used to always know how to work out a story into a ride that has no relation to a movie, now it seems like all they’re doing is thinking of how to turn an old ride into something based off of a already existing movie

  • @TPMvids

    Figment is such an iconic part of Epcot and although the current incarnation of the ride might not be as popular, he's a definitely an important character. Don't think we'll ever see him completely removed from the park.

    Ok so here's the thing, I knew who figment was but only because I worked at Disney World for a year and currently live in Orlando (I had no idea who he was before I moved here). But I think that replacing Figment with Bing Bong would be a huge mistake. One of the neatest things about the Disney parks is discovering the mini-culture unique to the parks, these little worlds you won't find anywhere else. Like the Haunted Mansion or Tower of Terror. Yeah, there's definitely that odd feeling when you have no idea what's going on, but that just gives you more reason to explore. It breaks my heart every time Disney unnecessarily adds elements from movies to these little microcosms, like when Disney Land California made Tower of Terror Guardians of the Galaxy themed. Idk, I just like the idea of characters and worlds that are unique to the parks.

    • @unicorntsukinc5495
      @unicorntsukinc5495 6 років тому +14

      totally agreed. But I think that giving imagination pavilion a new look would be a good idea, maybe the way to make figment big again is making him and bing bong partners in a new version of imagination pavilion. Like co-governors.

    • @lalas181
      @lalas181 6 років тому +15

      Yes! You wouldn't replace the ghosts in the Haunted Mansion with the witches from Hocus Pocus or some other similar set of characters, so why replace Figment with someone else just because they have a similar theme but make you more money?

    • @ladyalfhildrforestofvioletmist
      @ladyalfhildrforestofvioletmist 6 років тому +3

      Okay but I kind of really want a Hocus Pocus skin to be put on Haunted Mansion some Halloween now, that actually sounds like fun! Not permanently, though. And yes, RIP Tower of Terror California. I'm glad the Orlando one still exists; I'd like to go back some time now that I'm old enough to not be too terrified to go on it, haha :)

      Lalas181 : Because they're in it for the money? I know that there are people in the parks who are really into it for the love, and maybe their bosses too, but Disney is a business, and once you get up high enough, they're in it for the money. Eventually that trickles down.

  • @KingsleyIII
    @KingsleyIII 6 років тому +66

    Disney would never replace Figment with Bing Bong. Given the immense backlash they got from removing Figment in the early 2000s, I don't think they'd ever try removing or replacing him ever again. He's a popular character who is practically EPCOT's mascot, and has been for over 30 years. He's there to stay, and he should.

    • @whossoul
      @whossoul 6 років тому +2

      Well the backlash wasn't just about removing Figment. It was that they took a classic ride, designed by one of Disney's best ever imagineers, that was original and full of heart, and replaced it with something cheap, childish, and uninspired. Loosing Figment and Dreamfinder was hard, but it was the insult of a ride that replaced it that really caused the backlash. Now seeing that there are people in the Disney fandom that don't even know about Figment, maybe they will replace him?

    My husband laughed hysterically at me while watching this video. You struck a nerve, my friend, you struck a nerve. Pete's Dragon?? Spyro?? Bing Bong could never replace Figment (though there have been rumors of an Inside Out dark ride replacement)! The original ride was a masterpiece with a child like version of Figment the dragon that made rainbows and stories tangible. Did I forget to mention the perfumed scents that would be dispersed during certain moments of the ride? Figment did not interrupt the story like he does now. Instead, he added to it by making the story flow. I rode it in 1998, right before it shut down. In 1999, I was infuriated by the complete change. They cut the ride length in half, then ripped out so many design features that made the ride truly magnificent (not to mention, the theme song was removed entirely). I truly wish you could have ridden the original ride. Epcot was the place to go for slow, unique, rides that used scent machines and color to inspire the mind. Unfortunately, they had to change with the times; however, Journey Into Imagination should never have been touched. The only reason it was changed was due to a lack of sponsorship responsibility on Kodak's part. The glass pyramids used to house the WonderWorks....the ride, as a whole, has a really unique history! Fun Tip: The orange scents were originally used in the ride Horizons (another Epcot attraction that is now in the archives).

    You must be too young to know. The original journey into imagination was amazing! It was the best ride in EPCOT. If you were a child of the eighties or early nineties Figment WAS EPCOT. I’m not exaggerating when I say that he was the only character in Epcot. At least until the mid nineties when Micheal Eisner had them add Mickey and his friends. He was the mascot of EPCOT center and that is why so many eighties kids, like me, still love him. Unfortunately, his current ride and dream works is only a shell of it’s original incarnation. I wish they would bring back the original or a modernized version of it. I would hate to see Bing Bong replace him!🙁

    The reason why Figment is so important to Epcot is that he and the Dreamfinder were both some of the biggest original character in Epcot around its opening to a point where the pair were the Parks unofficial mascots during Epcot's first decade of existence. They even helped promote Epcot before their ride was ready for guests a year after Epcot opened. Believe it or not, their ride was one of the most popular rides in Epcot's first decade and, on the day it was closed down due to new deals with the ride's sponsor (Kodak), the only thing people were expecting from the closed ride was the well-needed/highly-demanded refurbishment. The second version of the ride was deemed both shocking and insulting to fans of the original ride that the second version did NOT last long and they tried to fix it with bringing back the song from the original ride and an updated version of Figment with...mixed results. I mean, people were glad to see him more prominently again...but he was no longer the same Figment we knew and loved. Instead of being filled with childish delight and holding the same sense of curiosity and wonder we shared with him, he was now a bit more of a nuisance and annoyance who ends up spraying you with the scent of skunk/coffee-gone-bad.
    Still, Figment (and even the Dreamfinder) seem to be heading in a direction of more respect in the more recent years. There are now TWO Figment comic series from Marvel (I HIGHLY recommend them both) and the pair have been seen at three separate D-23 Expos. In the first two they were seen in, they were on stages at panels portrayed by two of the original walk-around actors who would do the meet-and-greets in the parks: Ron Schneider and Steve Taylor. And, in the last D-23, they were seen in the merchandise for Epcot's 40th Anniversary. It's probably only a matter of time before the Dreamfinder reunites with Figment in the parks but, until then, it's looking like Figment will be come the official mascot of Epcot within the near future.

      However: I wouldn't say no to Bing bong being a friend of Dreamfinder and Figment who shows up occasionally. But also the whole.. Sad end of imaginary friends in Inside Out would make for a depressing ride if it was about Bing Bong. I actually remember most of my imaginary friends (partially because they had physical toys as avatars.).

      mindsendStoryweaver I myself am with you, to me figment it is one of my favorite characters and will be one that I would hate to see ones ride to completely disappear, I love the ride, true it’s not as good as the original with dreamfinder and figment but the current one with figment is still pretty decent and to completely uproot it and to replace it with the inside out ride (I don’t care of how popular the movie was) Will be a complete travesty and I would avoid the ride, I am myself am a avid Disney world going fan and miss the days in which they made a ride that had its own story over just putting in a ride based off of an existing movie, True that they did have rides based off of movies back then too but they knew how to blend the two and not have the whole park full of nothing but movie based rides

    I din't know Figment, but that's probably due to the fact that where I'm from people very rarely go to parks like this, as it a far travel (I live in Poland) and people with children can't really afford a trip like that, containing going to something so big. So yeah, I don't go to theme parks. Heck, even in my entire life of almost 20 years I've only been to an amusement park once.

    Turn in your Disney fan card! Figment is a classic representation of the older, better, non-IP laden version of Disney World. Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Tiki Room, Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, Test Track, Spaceship Earth, Country Bears, Soarin, Mission Space, Expedition Everest... all great attractions that do not rely on an IP. In fact, some of them have actually INSPIRED IP's, and in the case of Pirates, the IP turned around and reshaped the source material! You have to remember that Epcot was the second WDW park, and Figment was that park's mascot; a counterpart to Magic Kingdom's Mickey Mouse (or, arguably Tinker Bell).
    Don't get me wrong; I'm not saying the parks stink after adding IP all over the place. I'm just saying that even 9-year-old me in 1991 appreciated that not every Disney ride was a cheap tie-in to a Disney film. I love that Figment holds a special place in the hearts of WDW fans.
    And if you REALLY want to dig deep, look up Orange Bird. My wife is crazy for him. :-)

    What you need to understand is that Disney's dark rides don't come FROM movies, they are rethemed, refurbished, and reskinned TO movies. The majority of the attractions in the American Disney parks precede the whole IP attraction craze, and, thus, back when Epcot opened, people weren't attached to rides based on previous knowledge of what was in them. Figment became a huge pop-culture Epcot phenomenon through nostalgia alone. Epcot caters much more to adults than other parks, although increasingly for kids, and, thus, most of the audience within Epcot remembers Figment from their childhood and introduces him as is to their children. In turn, this creates an audience of young and old people finding a love for the purple dragon.

    Figment has been part of our Disney adventures since my daughter was 2 years old - she's now 32! Figment was and is her favorite Disney character (we who live in central FL know you can't escape the MOUSE, but he wasn't who we loved!). For most young people back in the day, Figment was the redeeming feature of Epcot, because the bulk of that park was geared toward adults and kids under a certain age found it extremely tedious to be dragged through it for a whole day. Keep your Bing Bong; it will be forever Figment in our world.

I could ride the ride for literally hours ... and I'd be willing to abandon the rest of my family so I could do that. My work schedule doesn't normally allow me to take long-ish trips, but I'm planning to go soon with two goals: ride JII as many times as I can and buy whatever he's on that I don't already have. I work at Disneyland and through pin trading I realize that not a lot of people know who Figment is. HOWEVER COMMA growing up I had a "giant" (he was like two feet tall) Figment stuffed animal that was probably one of my favorite things I owned. For my birthday last year my dad got me a t-shirt that looks just like Figment's, with his name on the front and his wings on the back. This little purple figment of your imagination was absolutely the light of my childhood and it makes me sad how much people don't get it. ALSO! Yeah, they definitely throw him in your face. There are SO MANY Figment pins here at Disneyland. 99% of Cast Member's pin trading lanyards have at least one Figment pin on them. If not more.

    Clearly Figment is pretty popular here on the east coast because Disney doesn’t keep on filling its stores with stuff that doesn’t sell. Lol “was I a big fan of the ride?”. I would say very much so since I worked the ride. To be honest I didn’t even know about the ride until I was assigned to work there, but you learn to love it and you learn to love figment. Here’s a little known fact. During the smell lab scene of the ride, figment “passes gas” to the riders and the smell is actually a ground coffee smell, but your brain thinks it smells bad because of the visuals and sound effects of figment farting. Next time you ride, close your eyes during that scene and it won’t smell bad. DM me if you have any questions about the ride. I loved it there!

      PotsAndPups pretty sure it’s a similar smell. Disney has certain smells that they use for all of the different rides, and typically ground coffee is used as a “bad smell”. But honestly none of the smells used are actually bad on purpose, it’s all in the illusion.

      Another fun fact* in the queue line there is a door that says “flubber storage” ( obviously referencing Robin Williams movie Flubber) and that is an entrance to our break room. Sometimes I’d come out of that door and see guests standing in line and say something like “ the flubber almost got away” etc..

    • @bandgirl1481
      @bandgirl1481 6 років тому +1

      There were also times where we were able to create magical moments as well. I’m the queue line there is a “reception desk” right when you walk in. So sometimes I’d sit behind the desk and pretend to be talking on the phone while I waved guests in. It’s was pretty fun to see their confusion.

    Granted, I was a little kid in the 80's, so Figment was THE JAM in Epcot; I haven't been there since the late 90's, so I haven't had the "honor" of riding the latest version of the ride (which I sadly hear isn't great) but I'm very happy to hear that despite that, Figment is still all over the place. And he is most definitely an icon of that park, especially for children of the 80's. But now that you mention the comic books, I would LOVE to see Disney/Marvel make a Dreamfinder/Figment movie or TV show for their new streaming channel

    We love Figment in my family. When I took my boys to Epcot for the first time he was at the top of my list. I have pictures from when I was a kid with Dream Finder and Figment. My boys have the plushes. This is a bit out of the way, the line is shorter, but worth the effort. It has the qualities the excite all the senses.

    Watching this, all I could think was, "I don't know who Figment is, but I swear I've seen him before!?!". And then you mentioned the fact that he was in educational videos in the late 80s. I honestly pointed to my computer screen when you said that and almost shouted, "That's it, that's it! That's where I saw him!". I'm 35 years-old and some how, in that moment you removed 30 years and sent be back to that 5 year-old mentality... The moment was fleeting, but it felt wonderful! Thank you J! *:-D*

    I went to Disney as a young child (age 4 the first time, 6 the second, and 9 the third time) so I remember Figment from when I went then and when you said something like "What, Figment the Imagination Dragon, of course how do you not know who he is turn in disney fan card you fraud" I was so confused because I went on that ride when I was younger and I was like yeah I know who he is but..... I'm not a Disney fraud...

    "Turn in your Disney fan card"??? Uh... I THINK I can keep mine because I have known WHO Figgy is since I was like 9. Been journeyin' into imagination with him for about 16 years, now! ANd I must ask... If a person went to EPCOT, HOW did they come away from it NOT knowing who Figgy is??? All you have to do is JOURNEY with him!

  • @melnorstratus5126

    It's fascinating to think that all this happened around Figment. When I first went Disney World, it was in the Dreamfinder period and I was pretty young. I was instantly obsessed and a whole world of possibility and creativity suddenly seemed not just possible, but within my power to attain.
    I went to Epcot one other time when I was in high school, which it seems put me after Figment had already gone and come back. While it wasn't the same it still revitalized that same tone that I may well be able to attribute some of my present day mindset as an actor and musician. It's been a good 10 years since I've seen him but he does seem to live at the fringes of my imagination even today.

    When Epcot opened, Figment was the only character in the park on any ride, and a Dream Finder walk-around character with a puppet Figment was the only character you could meet. This was because Disney executives wanted Epcot to be as different from the Magic Kingdom as possible to make sure people would visit both parks and not just one.
