  • Co-founder of NYC's Big Apple Circus and Clown Care Unit, Michael Christensen is a true pioneer in the field of clowning. His enduring legacy lies only in his famed clown character Mr Stubbs, but also in his transformative contributions to the world of circus arts and his unwavering dedication to bringing joy to communities and children in need.
After graduating from the University of Washington's Professional Actor Training Program in the late sixties, Michael's career took a pivotal turn when he joined the San Francisco Mime Troupe. This experience immersed him in the counterculture movement of the time, setting the stage for his future endeavors.
A significant moment came when Michael, along with his juggling and clowning partner Paul Binder, embarked on a European tour, showcasing their comedy-juggling routine. The duo's talent captured the attention of the legendary revue theater, the Casino de Paris, where they were featured in Roland Petit's "Zizi, je t'aime!" This success continued with an invitation to Annie Fratellini's Nouveau Cirque de Paris.
The pinnacle of Michael's achievements, however, came with the co-founding of the Big Apple Circus in New York on July 18, 1977. Inspired by the elegance and intimacy of European circuses, Michael and Paul aimed to recreate this atmosphere in the heart of the Big Apple. This endeavor marked the beginning of a legacy that would endure for decades.
Michael and Paul showcased their juggling act at every edition of the Big Apple Circus until 1983, captivating audiences with their humor and skill. Michael's transition to clowning in 1982 introduced the beloved character of Mr. Stubbs, a European-inspired "hobo" known for his verbal comedy. Alongside Barry Lubin and Jeff Gordon, Michael formed a highly successful trio of clowns that became an integral part of the circus until 1986.
In 1981, Michael assumed the role of Director of Clowning at the Big Apple Circus, showcasing his leadership and creative prowess. His impact continued to grow, leading him to become the Creative Director in 1995. Michael's commitment to community service became evident in 1986 when he founded the Big Apple Circus Clown Care®, an organization sending clowns and visual performers to pediatric hospitals across the United States.
Michael's achievements have garnered widespread recognition. He is the recipient of prestigious awards, including the Raoul Waldenberg Humanitarian Award, the Red Skelton Community Service Award, and Parenting Magazine's Parenting Achievement Award. Inducted into the Ambassador David M. Walters International Pediatric Hall of Fame, Michael was designated a New York Living Landmark by the New York Landmarks Conservancy.
Beyond the circus ring, Michael pursued acting, leaving his mark on films like Popeye, Heaven's Gate, and Annie. His television appearances include two episodes of the CBS series Chicago Hope. Retiring from active performing in 1988, Michael continued to shape the legacy of the Big Apple Circus, contributing as a consultant until 2016.
