Funny thing Is, people were complaining on the event trailer that subs would just make naval too arcade and ruin it more like they did in WoWS. Not realizing just how slow subs are submerged, how hard it'd be to get torpedo kills at range, that aircraft are a hard counter with magnet mines and depth charges, destroyers being an even harder counter, and especially that even the SLIGHTEST damage to ballast tanks forced subs to either surface, sink and dtown, or implode like a pod of five billionaires.
I remember playing Silent Hunter III. Hitting something wasn't *that* hard as torpedoes had the ability to do slight turns and you could rely on your onboard weapons officer to do calculations, the biggest problem was to *survive* until you reload. You had only 3-6 torpedo tubes + 1-2 in rear and 4-10 torpedoes reserve, and no mines unlike wt. Oh and reload took few minutes, unless you was in really late war one.
Soooo... they managed to balance one of the possibly most unbalanceable things at first try? I'm really surprised Gaijin, you are doing pretty well lately...
Tbf they were in the mobile version first. In the beta they were op as fuck, but they balanced them before the full release. I think they're just seeing how the main game community will react to them.

I wish war thunder has modes like silent hunter where your view is actually from inside the vehicle, for tanks and subs. Especially subs, the feeling of being physically inside a tin can underwater is quire unique.

Played it and it's really fun. The Hedgehogs seem to be kinda shite, not doing any damage, but depth charges work like a charm so long as you get a good spread and near enough to the sub. Shells can hit and damage your sub even if it's submerged so long as you're at periscope depth or slightly above, so it's not immortality. The detection mechanism seems to favor the sub-hunters a bit too much, making sneaking quite difficult - will need to be balanced. This, of course, is balanced by most of the sub hunters being dumb as a brick. I managed to delete five subs in my fletcher - the turning circle and the nice depth charge rack, as well as the Y-gun depth bomb castors are very very nice. I believe Gaijin should add some sort of sight for projected impact point on the water for both Hedgehogs and the Y-gun depth-charge castors. I also wonder how the RBU-2500, RBU-6000, etc. will work given how deadly they're supposed to be against subs. Another thought regarding the soviet-designed rocket-launched depth bombs is their anti-torpedo capability and how Gaijin will handle that. All in all, seems very very interesting and I really hope this will stay in - having Subs in game gives a hard counter to Battleships and Heavy Cruisers that right now, you just don't have; the air is a no-go with walls of flak and none of the hundreds of allied planes to share the fire with as they did in WW2, and anything smaller just gets deleted from 20KM away. This will give more incentive to play high tier Destroyers and Frigates besides dunking on uptiered torpedo boats, rather than make top tier a naval trench war.
What worries me is that subs are gonna have a tiger effect/situation, what i mean is that hyped noobs will rush to play them, will get constantly destroyed, tanking their k/d and victory ratio and then gaijin will buff them a lot solely based on their stats like they do with other vehicles, which will then make them exploitable by expirienced players. I hope they keep them balanced based on capabilities instead this time but we'll have to see.
My god, something for destroyers to actually do in high tier games? And a way for you to counter camping BBs. This has the potential to make the whole mode much more dynamic.

Does the torpedo aiming work the same as in Naval RB where you get the grey line where you should fire to hit your target if they keep moving straight?
...What if Britain got the "Dealer B" torpedo for a couple of its planes? It's one of the few passive acoustic homing torpedoes that I don't think would be OP. This is because its range is shorter than most torpedoes that are in the game, putting any plane that wants to use them well within the OP AI anti-air gunner range of a ship sitting halfway across the map when you're trying to go for something on the edge of the map, and it's also not that fast. It's primarily an anti-submarine torpedo, and was mostly carried by the Shackleton, so you'd be a huge target as well. I have no idea what the maximum drop height was for it. If Gaijin does start adding passive acoustic homing torpedoes, they'll have to do it very carefully so War Thunder naval doesn't turn into WoW.

It probably just how the gamemode is designed more than the vehicles. It feels one sided. Upon noticing this I spent a couple games flying a pby to just observe the battlefield and from what I can see the mission feels one sided towards the Americans just from how its set up. Things like spawns and how there practically no way to hide from sonar.
@@Caktusdud. There is a way to hide from sonar, I played Germans first and won a match. Played Americans and almost lost with 4 transports left. When playing Americans you get a sonar ping of the general area, heading closer you get to see the outline of the submarine. But if they're deep you do not get an outline and are stuck with the general area. Being stationary also screws with sonar. You have to play as a team when Germany, like surfacing and shooting at some destroyers then submerging so they focus on you.

Subs need to spawn a bit further from the enemy, and are gonna need big maps, but yea. I look forward to them showing up in the EC matches.

This looks funner than it really is. Most of the game you spend paddling slowly towards the cargo ship or away from escorts.
Feels somewhat like Silent Hunter, real OGs will remember.
