  • This is my review of the Channel Master CM5018 Masterpiece 60 TV Antenna. It’s constructed of decent material made to withstand severe weather conditions and comes assembled right in the box. How well does it work for weaker VHF and UHF TV Stations?

I recently moved within the WGBH (PBS Boston digital VHF 5) broadcast area. (From Nashua to Windham.) This is the antenna I chose for my new house as my old setup was pretty marginal getting channel 5. I’m happy to say that this antenna, combined with a shorter cable run, a 100 feet higher base elevation, and a taller house resulted in me immediately getting a useable signal without a lot of futzing. Just pointed it in the right direction. Didn’t even bother with a pre-amp. And now WGBH has cranked up the broadcast power so even better.
Thanks for the review, it’s why I chose this antenna.

Being a techie myself, your videos inspired me to experiment with my antenna collection. Since we have one station on 13 that will repack to 7, I focused on VHF performance. From worst to best: Winegard PR4400, DB4, unknown small CM yagi and Clearstream 2Max. The CS2 was about equal with the yagi, but I prefer the way it looks. VHF quality went from a low of 20 to a high of 38.UHF was better with the first 3, but ranged from 100 with the 4400 and DB4 to a low of 90 with the yagi and 80 with the CS2. Given I had a good VHF picture at 20, the 80 for UHF on the CS2 is quite acceptable. The PQ is as reported from my TCL Roku TV.

Great review Tyler, though chuckled when you mentioned antenna would be good in tornado areas. Believe me, if a tornado comes and knocks down my house, I will NOT be looking to check if this CM antenna elements remained in alignment! But thanks again for good information.

Good video Tyler, One thing I take into consideration is how the antenna will deal with Ice Storm's I have seen antenna elements brake off with the weight of ice rain sticking to it. I have seen some antennas here up north that are bent and with elements broken off! One reason I like the Antenna Craft HD 360 It has survived a few ice rain days as the antenna is in a Plastic Case!

I purchased the cm5020 and it definitely is pretty rugged with the added braces and the elements to securely lock into place. It receives everything I need for local channels. It's a 100 mile antenna and it's not overly large compared to other models. I'm not sure how it perform against larger cheaper models before their element snap off from wind and snow. But overall it's a solid buy!

Tyler, great video's and it's good to hear someone who's providing accurate info. I just have one suggestion regarding your testing method. It looked like you had some trees in your testing location. Even without trees though, signals bounce off of houses and other structures. Moving any antenna even a few inches left, right, up or down can make a huge change in signal strength. One style antenna may work better than another style, simply based on the angles of the signals hitting their elements, especially from trees. A more accurate evaluation might be to move the antenna up/down/left/right about 10 ft. and record the maximum signal you can receive with that antenna in that 100 sq ft area. Then use a second antenna and do the same test, moving it iaround in the same area. This type of testing will nullify the factors of the location itself. You may find an antenna you fine is a low performer, may work just as well as another, but at a slightly different location (maybe slightly to the left or right, etc.) For example. using the same elevation and position, I had 2 yagi antennas perform differently. I was ready to throw out the low performer until I tried this testing method. I found the low performer was actually a great performer, but it had to be positioned at a slightly different location than my other antenna. So the gain of the antenna is one thing, but location, location, location matters more! I capture a 60% signal of a UHF station 70mi. away. And it's a steady 60%! But ONLY in one location and at an elevation of 18 ft. At 19 or 17ft. it drops to 20% Moving it a few inches to the left or the right, or anywhere else in the yard drops it to 10%. I tried raising it to 30 ft, and the signal strenght was no more than 20%. So tell your viewers that LOCATION is a HUGE factor for hard to get stations, and that holds true for the attic especially.

Tyler. Love the reviews and the snarky comments. I still use OTA TV more then anything else. It would take a bit of time and labor but it would be great if you could build a popular DIY home built antenna. You probably know which one. All you need is a 2x4 some metal clothes hangers, wire, solder and a balun. It would be great to see it compared to brand names.

I like your channel. I have this antenna as well as the cheapo with pre amp you recently reviewed. The cheapo performed much better than this one ( a few channels vs NO channels at my remote Frazier Park CA location.). However, as you pointed out about the cheapo, it falls apart quickly. I will try a preamp on this sturdy antenna and see what happens. BTW, when I was a kid, I made crystal sets. Not knowing much about radio, I thought the longer the antenna the better. My dad and I strung one from our 2nd story window out to a eucalyptus tree, some 75 feet away. It snapped (the wire, not the tree) before we could test it out. So much fun! Also, the wire was advertised as "magnetic". no doubt an advertising ploy like the "HD" antenna ploys, you've revealed. Caveat Emptor!!!
Radio Shack, Midway Electric, Allied and Lafayette were supply places in L.A. I could ride my bike to for parts. Transistors were just coming to be. I wanted to build a 2 transistor pocket FM radio SO BAD, but one of the transistors cost $28 1957 dollars. I did build a 2 tube AM radio that my neighbor Joel Kunin (K6 OEO ocean easy ocean) sorted out for me.

I'll be honest. In my experience an all in one yagi style antenna while there is nothing wrong with it, I have had better customer response and signals from setting up an separate VHF and UHF antenna setup. Of course in my area we don't have many homes that have much LOS and are most often 1edge and 2edge which requires a preamp too. I've also encountered resistance from using an all in one yagi style antenna but for some reason when I couple a VHF yagi style antenna with something like an Antennas Direct DB4e I get positive responses. Go figure. Now I do like Antennas direct Clearstream antennas unfortunately the VHF dipoles aren't quite up to the task compared the UHF part.

Since the repack, I've no longer been able to receive Retro TV which broadcasts on channel 28. Antennaweb told me they must have really gone low power since the repack. What you tell us is interesting but sometimes is complicated. Why North America can't do the same thing just like Europe? • @Nicholas_Chris
      @Nicholas_Chris 5 років тому +1

@ⅰи∂ㄩㄅ360 If I remember correctly it was after the digital transition. It was right after 2008. All countries in the EU went fully digital in 2015. In the analog days we used both bands for TV, VHF Channels 5 - 12 (174 - 230 MHz) and UHF channels 21-69 (470 - 862 MHz). After the digital switch the UHF is for TV and VHF is for FM radio and DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting or Digital Radio), the DAB is using the VHF Band Channels 5 - 12. Now the UHF band is using Channels 21- 60. The channels 61 - 69 is now used for 4G LTE. And I'm talking about the European Union. We use DVB (Digital Video Broadcasting) standard. Same question I got. Why not put all tv stations in the UHF band. USA and Canada are ass backwards. Really it's the FCC and Congress in the USA. The stupid idiots should not be giving away 37 to 69 but keeping it and screw the cell phone companies.
Look how many times they CHOPPED THE UHF BAND.
UHF TV was 14 to 83 in channels.
      1) 1983 decided to hack off 70 to 83.
      2) Later do not know exact date hacked off 51 to 69.
      3) 2017 decided let's hack off more again Congress and FCC by holding a auction to entice Stations to go out of business or move to another Frequency (some even moved to Low Band VHF, which they dropped in 2009.
      4) So in 2020 the UHF TV Band reduced to 14 to 36.
      This is total bull.
As I agree with the writer why could the TV Band be all on UHF.
They have made a total mess of the TV Band.
The idea of going digital was to get rid of those Long elements. Now some stations have moved to VHF 5 Low Band. What a f.......g mess.
Notice how small UHF Antennas have to have that Long element sticking out, to receive HI Band VHF of 7 channels.
I blame FCC And Congress for this screw up.

    • @Nicholas_Chris
      @Nicholas_Chris 5 років тому +1

@ⅰи∂ㄩㄅ360 Yes, the European TV sets and digital receivers have the following frequency range: 47 - 862 Mhz, the FM band is in that range. It should have FM mode just like these TV model: ua-cam.com/video/GKahO-_jWZk/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/-06AWBhBTM4/v-deo.html. Here in the EU the brand new models of TVs have two tuners, the first one for Antenna and Cable and the second tuner for satellite. There are hundreds of channels free to air on satellite. All digital TV sets can receive digital radio, either from your cable company or satellite, and in some major cities with a regular antenna.

    • @Nicholas_Chris
      @Nicholas_Chris 5 років тому +1

@@diycarhome9151 Thanks for the info. Yes, the FCC screwed up things in USA and Canada, and the VHF Low is problematic. You need a large antenna, I know that in the early days of television in Europe we used the VHF Low (Channels 2 - 4) until 1957 then was replaced with VHF High. VHF high band allowed you to install a smaller antenna and had less interference. Some cable companies use the VHF low band for analog TV channels but after 2020 all cable TV channels will be digital. And yes with the 4G LTE they will cut down other UHF Channels. Lucky we have Free-to-air satellite TV as a substitute for terrestrial, but the problem is not everyone can install a satellite dish.

They said the newer ATSC 3.0 standards are using an OFDM modulation scheme and don't need a fancy directional antenna shown in your video. ATSC 3.0 even works in a moving car. It's only a matter of time before the FCC shuts down the ATSC 1.0 (8VSB) and replaced with ATSC 3.0 (OFDM).

    • @AntennaMan
      @AntennaMan  5 років тому +1

You will likely still need a directional antenna in most areas. The frequencies aren't changing just the standard IF it takes off. If reception is marginal now it won't be much better.

    • @bobskie321
      @bobskie321 5 років тому

      @@AntennaMan
Okay. But they said if you are in an urban area where signals are strong because transmitters are nearby but with lots of ghosts due to tall buildings which ATSC 1.0's 8VSB tends to pixelate depending on how good the ghost cancellation of your receiver and may still needs a directional antenna to reject unwanted ghosts, ATSC 3.0's OFDM is inherently immune to that so even a rubber duck antenna mounted vertically might do the job although in rural area where signals are marginal a directional antenna like those in your video are still necessary.

While watching this review, I noticed two things: 1) That you were pointing each antenna in the direction of the transmitter; and 2) That you did not have them up very high (MAYBE 10 feet?), so your LOS was being obstructed by trees, houses, etc. You should know that getting the antenna at least above immediately-surrounding objects improved reception dramatically. So why are you testing them at approx 10-ft AGL? I don't think that is giving an accurate representation of the antennas' performance.

    • @AntennaMan

Channel Master recommended the CM-5020 but were down on their CM-2020 which would have been an alternate choice to my CM-4228HD but they were down on their own antenna as it's not as well built as their Masterpiece Series. My best two antennas to date in bringing in the most was the $100 Antennas Direct DB4e,
and the Digiwave 2104 at $49.95
Last Sunday the Digiwave 2104 got 1 more Channel then the DB4e at $100.00
Will be testing 12 antennas tonight. Will keep you posted.

      I did a test last Sunday DB8e VS. DB4e
The DB4e got 29 stations pointing at WGRZ 2.1 to 2.4 (RF33) Transmitter in Colden, New York
The DB8e set up exactly the same height and aiming at WGRZ got 14 channels.
Why WGRZ 2.1 to 2.4 (RF33) because it's a difficult station to get which shows the true colours of how good an antenna is.
Doing a another test tomorrow got 12 different antennas. 4 bays, 8 bays and Yagis.
Want to know which antenna brings in the most stations in one direction.
Last Sunday put the DB4e 4 bay $100.00 up against the Digiwave 2104 Yagi at $40.00
Aimed at WGRZ Colden, New York Transmitter. The Digiwave 2104 got one more Channel then the DB4e. Your paying for a bit fancier design. But really the Yagi got one more Channel.
Will again test them in the morning again.
I do install them so only practical field test tell the story.
Some customers want the best Antenna. So what is the Best. Only practical field tests tell.

I assume you have both of the antennas of the db8e pointing in the same direction? I scanned the same amount of channels, with few more dbs of signal strength on fringe Detroit channels over the db4e this can make or break reception especially during the day, I live in Toledo about 50-65 miles from the tower, contrary to what I read the db8b is actually less directional than the db4b which is nice for a couple of local channels that usually break up a bit w/o a direct point.
The Digiwave seems to be a clone of the Antennas Direct 91XG I have the Xtream Signal clone it's a good design but functionally not that much different than the db series at least in my situation & yeah it's a good build, the db4e is the first cord cutting antenna I bought & a half dozen antennas later still the best for UHF.

You should test out the Channel Master CM-5020 that Channel Master recommended to me. However, there are no VHF-Lo Stations in my area. I suggested that they make a Masterpiece Series version of their CM-2020. The only VHF Stations on VHF-Hi are 2 local Stations and ABC WVNY 75 miles away on Mount Mansfield, I'm in Montreal. One other comment I want to make is are all TV Tuners the same quality? Maybe signal reception problems aren't always the fault of the antenna but of the TV tuner. With Pay TV being so dominate especially in Canada and maybe with only a million OTA TV viewers, some manufacturers maybe are putting in lower quality RF tuners expecting people to use Pay TV or the Internet?

Is it possible that this antenna can reach out to 75 miles? I'm currently using the CM-4228HD and all the major Networks on Mount Mansfield Vermont are on UHF and come in great except one, ABC. ABC WVNY was on UHF ch 22 since 1968 but because of repacks (hijacking of UHF TV Band frequencies) ABC WVNY was bounced to RF Ch 13.1 and now on to ch 7.1 This channel is unwatchable with the CM-4228HD. The other antenna I was considering is the CM-2020 but the build quality doesn't look as good as the CM-5018. I need your help. I have a Radio Shack antenna in my attic. It is about 14 years old. On a good day I get 41 channels but the channels disappear every day. Rescanning after that only yields 3 channels. I installed a Channel Master powered splitter CM-3414 and a LTE/5G filter CM-3201. I received 41 channels for a day, then the channels disappeared again. A rescan only yielded 3 channels. I have no trees in my yard.
Eventually, after repeated attempts, the scan yields 24-41 channels but they do not hold for long.
Wondering if my antenna is shot?
My zip code is 02915. I am near Providence RI.
My stations are in Providence, Boston, and Worcester Massachusetts.
When I was a kid in the seventies, we had a tv with rabbit ears and a circular antenna for UHF and we received more channels consistently than I get today.
    Any help would be great.

I'm up here in Southern Ontario - Canada. We get extreme heat of 32C from
May to Sept. then got extreme cold from Nov. to March -25C.
What you find is the cheaper in cost the antenna, the plastic breaks down and the elements are cheap aluminium too.
The less plastic on the Antenna the longer it will last.
      In your case:
If you are receiving local channels under 50 miles.
There is a small Yagi that's all aluminum at: www.primecables.ca
      The Antenna is called:
Professional HDTV Fishbone Outdoor TV Antenna, sells for $14.95 CAD or on www.amazon.ca for $19.95 same exact thing.
Use two or three of these antennas for local channels under 50 miles.
Will mount at desired stations and run into a splitter that will feed into a preamp.
For long distance Greater than 50 miles use the following antenna.
Then use a Channel Master all aluminum parabolic 6 foot or 7 foot UHF antenna for long distant Stations.
As you look at Antennas in general you will notice the plastic they are using on the edges of 8 bays or 4 bays. In time this is all going to break down in the hot desert sun.
Look for used Channel Master Parabolic's in 6 or 7 ft models. Google Channel Master Parabolic UHF Antenna. To see them.
Drill all the steel rivets and replace with Stainless steel screws and clean and repaint all aluminum parts. Reassemble and mount.
Once done the antenna will last 40 years in Arizona.

Target Transmitter was WUTV Fox 29.1 to 29.3 (RF32) Transmitter height 1,000 ft at 1,000 kilowatts located on Grand Island, New York. Between Canada and USA.
My location of test: Brantford, Ontario
50 miles to Toronto CN Tower.
70 miles to Grand Island New York Fox 29 Transmitter.
90 miles to Colden, New York of WGRZ 2.1 NBC (RF33) WIVB 4.1 CBS (RF36), WKBW 7.1 ABC (RF38)
Test was conducted to target on WGRZ 2.1 being the weakest of the lot.
After I could not pick it up I had to focus on Fox 29.1 WUTV as my bench mark Signal.
The channels I picked up are not all Buffalo Stations, they are some Toronto, Hamilton, Kitchener and Woodstock Stations. My main aim was Buffalo FOX 29.1 which I teaked the antenna on the highest signal strength of Fox 29.1. Once I established this I rescanned. For total number of channels this particular antenna could pick up in a given direction.(Being FOX 29.1, Grand Island, New York)
    There's what I got!
    Antennas
    4 bay
    DB4e 4 bay
    11 channels picked up.
    Fox 29.1 at 54 % signal strength.
    CM4221 4 bay 14 channels picked up.
    Fox 29.1 at 53 % signal strength.
Digiwave Ant-2084 11 channels picked up.
    Fox 29.1 at 54 % signal strength.
Focus 4 bay 14 channels picked up.
Fox 29.1 at 53% signal strength.
    8 Bay Antenna's
    CM4228HD 8 bay 11 channels picked up.
    Fox 29.1 at 53 % signal strength.
    Yagi Antenna's
Digiwave Ant-2112 triplane with 4 directors, 12 channels picked up.
Fox 29.1 at 50% signal strength.
Digiwave Ant-2104 with 9 'X' directors, 11 channels picked up.
Fox 29.1 at 50% signal strength.
Digiwave Ant-2190 with 15 directors, 74.5 inches long, got 27 chancels picked up.
    Fox 29.1 at 60 % signal strength.
Note: Original target station was WGRZ 2.1 (RF33) at Colden, New York.
Once I started the test with the 4 bay antennas they could not get it. So I changed over to Fox 29.1 WUTV as my target station. During my test the only ANTENNA to bring in WGRZ 2.1 (RF33) was the DIGIWAVE Ant- 2190. Antenna was tuned to Fox 29.1 as test station.
Out of all the 4 bays, 8 bay and Yagis.
The Digiwave Ant-2190 pulled in the most Channels only 15 feet off the ground.
If it was at 30 to 60 feet it would pull in more.
Test conducted at 15 feet to show sensitivity of antenna.
    Clear Winner: Digiwave Ant-2190
Next weekend will put the Digiwave Ant-2190 $70.00 CDN up against the Antennas Direct DB8e priced at $189.00 CDN also focused in on WGRZ 2.1 (RF33) or WUTV 29.1 (RF 32).
Why pay more money for an Antenna? Does more money buy more Channels????????????????
Only a Field Test will tell!!!!!!!!

The NBC affiliate in Vegas (Edit: It used to be on Low-VHF; apparently they swapped frequencies with an independent station). KVCR (PBS) and KWHY (independent) in the Los Angeles area. Low-power WRUF-LD (PBS) in Gainesville, Florida.
