I was a resident DJ in one of the busiest music pubs in North London from 1969- 1973. My day job was as a sales rep, which allowed driving around all day with Radio 1 on, so i got nominated to buy the records each week. I remember hearing this new skinhead band called "Slade" around 1969 or 1970 and bought a record I liked called "Know Who You Are". I don't think it ever became a hit but a while after that, they changed their style to become part of the new glam rock thing and became a huge success. I still like that first song even now.
know who you are is an unrecognised classic. Live version on Slade Alive is ever better. They weren't very convincing skinheads... their manager made them do it
Amazing footage to see… Slade really brightened up the music scene when they arrived, bringing back good old fashioned FUN along with their terrific run of classic No.1 singles!
Oh! how time has flown. This band are much older, But much wiser, and what a band, Love Slade, I once loved the Beatles, But then these guys came along.
Very nice document from their early days. Chas Chandler thought it would be a wise move to give them the current skinhead look, which was probably a quick success. Well, Mr. Chandler, far from it - Slade hated this skinhead look from the beginning because it did not fit the rock they always wanted to do, and did not bring anybody any success. They put this look back very quickly - fortunately, because otherwise the success would probably never been as possible, as it was the case from 1971. Musically, what they offered on this TV performance at "Monster Music Mash" was still light years away from glam rock from the early '70s, but here they already showed good potential. Above all, the very successful "Wild Winds Are Blowing" already has many features of the later Slade sound, comes here, for example, Noddy's sawing voice already well to fruition. Thank you very much for uploading from Germany.
Been a fan for many years but it's weird watching videos like this and how they are all getting older now but gave us some great years, still remember 1st time I saw them live GREAT TIMES.
I was rather thinking of the ridiculous outfits worn by the band between '71-'77. Ozzy Osbourne once said "what were the bands of that time thinking?" Probably they were not.
I first heard this song being played on a childrens television programme called Magpie presented by Mick Robertson who went on to release a couple of songs himself it was made in opposition to a programme called Blue Peter.Does my memory serve me well ?
The skinhead look is no surprise to me, I knew they started with that in their early career. What really surprises me is that Jim Lea could actually play the violin!
Oooooo! Never seen or heared this before. Amazing Never thought they've been this young and innocent. Nobby's voice is already regognizeble. And perfect.
Actually the first track shows what they could become... Many of their earliest tracks are something about very complex progressive rather than just glam rock. But anyway, this is sooo good!!
Wondered what the guys thought at this time of being one of the biggest bands around, within a matter of a couple of years.you can see it on their faces, they never thought for a minute, people like me and you, were thinking,, wow this band are going places.and they sure did.
Slade - The best Band ever
This is a hidden GEM! These guys have so much talent. Jim's violin playing is just too cool!! Real talent!!

Slade!

Wow slade what a fantastic band and Noddy can sing any song The best rock voice ever keep on rocking
A Classic Video.Never Seen This Before....
This has to be one of the of the most bizarre music videos on UA-cam.
This is pretty fn vanilla
Love the music ❤
super talented band to transpose this song from piano to violin and the bass playing is awesome!
Quite the transition from here to how they are during the 70s wow.
So nice of Slade to lend this song to the Beatles.
SLADE........simply the best
Who would have thought they would become one of the biggest bands of the 70's!
I never new Slade dated back to '69!!! Loved both songs!!!
I saw them a couple of times before then, before they assumed the "skinhead" look - they were known as Ambrose Slade at the time.

1st band I saw at Sheffield City Hall......still love them :)
David Brown We had some great bands back then.
amazing the transformation they made in just a few years from this until the early 70's
Slade is very good band!
hoorah!
This is so surreal... I'm so used to see them as Rock N Rollers
Young-young Slade and old-old we... Skinhead's in the stage !...
there wouldnt be a late 60s original skin listening to that utter shit mate!!
1969 😃👏👏👏👏Fantástica historia !! Grandes SLADE
Fantastic quality.
Proper live band, proper musicians
Get them inducted to rock n roll hall of fame long overdue
Keep on rockin Ian grocock sheffield
Slade - 'skinhead era', em sua primeira aparição na TV inglesa, tocando "Martha My Dear" e "Wild Winds Are Blowing", muito bom!!!
Been a fan for many years but it's weird watching videos like this and how they are all getting older now but gave us some great years, still remember 1st time I saw them live GREAT TIMES.
GREAT stuff lads.... never too late to discover talent!
Slade a very underated group
Best Group ever ,,,,,
Brilliant cheers for posting
Amazing really that they were ostensibly a covers band up until stardom arrived and that even started with a cover.
Never seen before... great !
Jimmy Lea awesome bass.
Wild winds are blowing, great song.
Hello Jackie
The lyrics are fitting
Noddy: what have you done? You shaved our fucking heads :)
What a great song
Well,it´s a Beatles song from The White Album in 1968.
Absolute brilliance from Slade, my favourite band.
Oh Oh Oh this is so beautiful, love from Holland.
They hated this look. They were never skinheads...they were rockers and they knew it. And when they got the chance, they showed it!
hell yeah!
susan leitch
Exactly. Stupid managers idea. They indeed hated it.
They surely looked better this way. Should have kept this look. Jim hated the look of the early seventies.
claan719
I agree. Long hairs usually look dirty
I was rather thinking of the ridiculous outfits worn by the band between '71-'77. Ozzy Osbourne once said "what were the bands of that time thinking?" Probably they were not.
Slade most underrated British band ever
Great stuff , glad the clip survived
Times had to be tough back then but just goes to show you if you hang in it can turn out for the best I just wish they could get in Hall of fame
wow thanks for the upload ,SLADE are one of my childhood favs
love it, greatest band .
Second song is awesome, i never heard it before. Thanks. I am fine with the clean cut, clezn cut guys can still rock.
This is cool to see their beginnings. And quite entertaining.
Beautiful, thanks for uploading.
Loved the songs.
Glam Rock was definitely them and not skinheads.
wild winds are blowing 🤩
One of the great almost forgotten bands, just love em!
I first heard this song being played on a childrens television programme called Magpie presented by Mick Robertson who went on to release a couple of songs himself it was made in opposition to a programme called Blue Peter.Does my memory serve me well ?
Not used to hear Noddy sing that soft haha
HateIronMaiden bit out of tune also not a song for his voice
This is grate . Some 's times the early stuff is the best.
Noddy hits the note on "done" better here than he does on Beginnings.
Saw them at Fareham youth club when they looked like this, Christ is it really 50 years ago.
You might say he found hos voice a bit later...😂 the intensity of the playing is just brilliant!
The skinhead look is no surprise to me, I knew they started with that in their early career. What really surprises me is that Jim Lea could actually play the violin!
This has to be the most unexpected thing ever to appear courtesy of UA-cam’s algorithms! Great though, thanks.
de skinheads a glam rockers, qué grandes!
Oooooo! Never seen or heared this before. Amazing
Never thought they've been this young and innocent.
Nobby's voice is already regognizeble. And perfect.
this is surreal....
that is the best way to star to be a Magic Musical band... i really love Slade
Hehehe....goooood. I Love Slade.
I remember Slade being rated as loudest live band some years after this fiasco.
Fenomenlane!!!
first skinhead band - suspenders, doc martens and the matching haircuts!
That is fucking amazing...
Best of the best❣
il était déjà formidables
Actually the first track shows what they could become... Many of their earliest tracks are something about very complex progressive rather than just glam rock. But anyway, this is sooo good!!
That's actually a Beatles song.
I think "very complex" would be a slight exaggeration...
I was a regular back up DJ to Slade, Aldridge com centre, bloxwich baths
Excellent cover
absolute love it

You bet they did
Wow!!!💚
SO, SO different to what they actually would become,....SUCH a different look and sound to 2 years on....
huuuu fantastic!
Wow I was six at the time but cannot remember this. Hardly what you'd call "Oi" today despite the short hair and skinhead garb.
The Best band
For a moment I thought this was one of Ade Edmondson's comedy bits 😉
