  • GG Aleste 3 Normal Mode No Continue CLEAR! No Slowdown
A new legit Game Gear game, in 2020!? A crazy stunt like this is actually not new for M2. They did make a Fantasy Zone 2 remake on an (emulated) old arcade board. But usually games on old hardware, in particular consoles, are homebrews, not made by a relatively big developer such as M2.
The game is easy on Normal Mode, I guess it's expected for Aleste titles, but it's quite fun! It's easy to gain extends and this is my first GG Aleste game, so I can only compare it to other Aleste titles. It's the usual fare but more intense and less repetitive while not being too long. A nice 35 minutes duration compared to 1 hour onslaughts Compile usually would make. Fast, blood pumping, and featuring Manabu Namiki as the composer. Close to no janky parts either. One of the best shmups ever made. Briefly speaking, I'd say this would be Raizing's attempt of making a Compile title.
As an Aleste title its main feature is you can erase enemy bullets. For this game, not all bullets can be erased, though. For Normal Mode I would recommend sticking with C shot. This shot can't erase bullets, which defeats the purpose of naming the game with Aleste on it, but when the erasable bullets are minimal it would be a wise choice to focus on the offensive. Not only that, the game grants you Perfect bonus when you completely eliminate some enemies on some parts of the Waves. On specific parts, D for, duh, defense, and R for the piercing laser.
The stage design is awesome and varied. I'm not a fan of the ambiguous bullets, though. In particular the napalm explosions. Thankfully they're not difficult to see. Just surprising upon first encounter. I'd say Wave 5's is the most memorable one for good and bad reasons. It's a bit repetitive and there's this rocket segment where you'll feel like you'll always get snapped into the middle with a magnet or something, though actually the game is scrolling horizontally infinitely since you're circling the rocket. Awesome, but this stage needed some practice to get used to. The boss? I'm a sucker of rival bosses in general. The boss will use your sub weapons against you. No, the patterns won't change depending on your currently equipped sub weapon, but it's very cool to taste your own weapons indeed.
Speaking of survival, the game has no bombs. There is this G-Field thing, a barrier, that will absorb damage instead of letting you lose a life. I like this, and it makes the game pretty tense too, as it makes you clutching for your life while filling the barrier again.
Yeah, this is a very fun shmup that is both retro and modern. Regarding playing true to the Game Gear's limitations or remove the slowdown, personally removing it makes the game better and surprisingly, more convenient. The slowdowns would make the game turn into a slow slog induced by the game pushing the (virtual) Game Gear to its absolute limit. And the fast scrolling looks the best in uncompromised 60 FPS. Not much of a scrolling pr0n compared to Raiden V, but still amazing nonetheless.

I'm going to have to watch the last couple stages here for some strategy when I play it later. You smoked this game pretty quick today. Seems all that's left is Special mode. I'm not ready to think about Special mode with no slowdown yet! 😂

Don't forget the amazing Pac-Man Championship and Gaplus ports M2 made for the NES! But this seems to be their most amazing offering yet... I can't wait to get my hands on this.

The look at Luna’s face in the ending. It just screams, “It’s your fault I’m in this situation right now. How grateful do you think I feel?”
