- USAF Thunderbird 9 at "show center" flashing Thunderbird 1 (the lead pilot) with reflected sunlight from a signal mirror at the Huntington Beach Air Show, 21 Oct. 2018. The flash marks the place ("show center") where the maneuvers are to be centered. Traditionally, Thunderbird 9 (the flight surgeon) operates the signal mirror at air shows. Here, that is Major (Dr.) Glen Goncharow, Thunderbird 9 from fall 2017 to mid-2019. The red disk in the center of the signal mirror is a retroreflective aimer, which acts like a "red-dot" gunsight, creating a glowing red dot visible only when looking through the aimer in the direction of the main column of reflected light. A good explanation of how retroreflective signal mirror aimers work can be found online at: www.bsaontarget...
