    Put the phone camera up to the mirror, so we can see what it's like when you aim.

    I once used my granpa's old cold war era Eastern European army flashlight to signal for pizza in morse code and in 1 hour I got my order of 2 New York-Style Pizza and 2 Sicilian Pizza, plus the 6 cans of coke and 6 slices apple pie for dessert when me and the boy were in college,

    My grandfather, a WW1 vet, was issued a shaving kit with safety razor and a mirror. The mirror was a double sided, polished metal plate with a hole near the center. It was made for emergency signaling. Hold the mirror at arms length, sight the target through the hole and tilt the mirror until you see the reflection of the shadow of the mirror over the hole on the rear polished surface. When held this way the, target should be able to see the reflection of the sun. The hole in the center was also handy for hanging the mirror while shaving. A platter from a discarded hard disk also makes a pretty good signal mirror although the hole in the center is a little too big. Likewise for a recordable or RW CDROM if it's shiny on both sides.

    • @kishascape
      @kishascape Рік тому

      CD actually doesn't need to be shiny on both sides and the method shown here is superior to the arm length one.

    A simple Morse massage to remember is , SOS, dit dit dit - darr darr darr- dit dit dit . Pause and repeat , as many times as you can . Of course if the sun goes in or it's a rainy day you have problems ..........................

    I don't know Morse code(s) like most people, but I'm guessing Tap code can be used by anyone after a few minutes of training. It's simple and Wikipedia has an article about it. You can also do this code with your fingers, flashlights, sound taps through a wall or door. The tap code can be used with radio signals also, such as pules of a tone or something being transmitted, which is especially useful when
    someone does not know Morse Code. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tap_code
    You can know in your head what these pulses mean, but it is also better to
    write (or say to another helper) the number of pulses so that they can be written down and decoded later.
    The only problem I have with the "recommended Tap code" is the C and the K letters.
    I'd rather keep them in and just remove the Z letter (which is not used much) or assign it another set of 2 numbers. If anyone has any ideas about that let me know.
    Also you could actually code that 5x5 alpha-numeric system to be any letters you want if you had to code your messages.

    • @welshpete12
      @welshpete12 8 років тому

      +trailkeeper If you do not know Mores . Why not a piece stick white insolation tape the sort used by electricians on the back of your mirror with , dit dit dit , dash dash dash , dit dit dit written on it ?

    • @trailkeeper
      @trailkeeper 8 років тому

      welshpete12 That seems like a good idea., If you know Morse code, then you probably have a good idea if it is feasible to a person who knows nothing about it. The Tap code seems feasible. It is a simple to understand system. I don't feel this is the case for the Morse code system. If im wrong then explain. You can also carry the Tap code written on a piece of paper or on the back of the mirror. A problem with the Morse code, and some may already know this, is that it may be hard to create and distinguish the dots and (longer) dashes at the receiving end. With the Tap code, its simple counting. The Tap code can be explained and put into use within a minute or two. Maybe some have used it with Morse, but they probably were very familiar with Morse for at least a few years, such as the radio types. Tap code is not accepted much because it, the concept, is hardly known and then taught compared to Morse code.

    • @trailkeeper
      @trailkeeper 8 років тому

      +welshpete12 One reason I mentioned the Tap code is that people are using communication/signal mirrors to communicate when there is no problem,like SOS (surival, emergency), but for just sending messages/information. There are videos of people here on youtube who do that, and they have reached several miles out to about 50 miles with larger mirrors. Some of these are more than simple mirrors, but are set on stable stands to keep the aiming, and have "shutters" so as the "(sun) light"/signal can be turned on and off quickly. Look up heliostats or heliostat communication

    Zero content that adds any useful info on actually just "How to USE a signal mirror"...which was the title of this video.
    Might as well have simply said, "Buy mirror XYZ and then follow the instructions on the back." This was like telling someone you're going to teach them how to drive and then just telling them to buy a car and read the owner's manual.

    Here is another method. Use a regular mirror from Dollar Tree store or 99C or a CDROM or platter from a hard drive and a small piece of reflective tape or bicycle pedal reflector. Place it on a branch or at the end of a hiking pole. Position yourself such that the reflector is inline with target. Now move the mirror until the sun ray hit the reflector. You'll know it because of the flash back from the reflector. ... or simply hold the reflector with your other arm.
    USE HIGH POWER LASER FOR NIGHT SIGNALLING. IN MOIST AIR THEY'LL SEE STAR WAR SABER SWORD. IN DRY AIR IT CAN REACH MILES. You can get a $1 laser pointer but for about $15 you can buy one that will light a match head - Ebay or Amazon.

    Well done ...informative and humerous...I don't quite get the importance of the aiming aid and retro-reflective material...I would just aim the reflection looking past the side of the mirror...maybe you could elaborate on this. Tnx and Greets from the woods of CT!

    • @holyjoe
      @holyjoe 7 років тому +1

      Your method only works when the target is very close. The mesh in the mirror creates a bright dot that's in the same place as the target, which is important when the reflection is too far away to see, or when you're aiming at an airplane. You can clearly see the bright dot even in the sky, and no matter how far away the target is.

    The one problem with a signal mirror is that it might not work on a cloudy, rainy day. To send a signal then, you'd probably need a flashlight.
