Its been a dream of mine to have a backyard bunker full of tech. I'm making this back yard bunker from two pieces of storm water run off pipe. 12ft wide culvert pipe that ends up being 40ft long. The Backyard Bunker project will sleep 6 people and will allow the group to stay underground for weeks!

Mmm... those round stones... all that sand. Your house it's on top of a former riverbed, or lake for sure.
Your voice sounds like a bad ai model in the voicover portions, maybe try sounding more enthusiastic.
I would say, A great Next time, is doing it for an other youtuber, maybe Colin Furze? (both of your experiences combined to make the ultimate bunker.)
Pan the sand for gold
If a vacuum cost over 700$, I'll just sweep and mop it up instead.
This project is moving faster than the road work down the street from me.
Lol my thoughts exactly
Indeed :o
Private vs government.
🤣🤣🤣
No utilities being in the area makes everything a lot easier
Zach sitting in the hole saying how excited his 3yo self would be right before going "oh and I found a cool rock" is so perfect
im 26. a cool rock is still one of the best thigns you can find on the ground
I Told my mom about this and she said I know what you thinking, no you can't dig a big tunnel in my backyard.

But she didn't say anything about a small tunnel!

"Thumbs up for chill neighbors" is SUCH an understatement!!!
this excavator operator is quite good - making relatively flat pulls is hard.
I agree! The guy is a master
new ai sensor excavator
While I don't disagree modern excavators can also make such things quite easy, you basically just tell them what you want to do
@@sitte24 You’re right the operator tells the excavator what to do. Always has. He’s a good operator
Operator is good. But modern machines has this operation automated. You engage it and hydraulics make sure blade moves horizontally or at any given angle as you pull the lever.
Between this and Colin Furze's 8-year ongoing bunker/tunnel/underground garage project. I'm pretty tempted to build my own.
And these are just the bunkers we KNOW about!
i just watched colins new video and i came here lol

Colin's is way better. The Original.
Post it on UA-cam if you do
"I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to build a bunker in their backyard"
Colin Furze: 🧐
He started it?
That's what I was thinking 😅
Yup, he did.
People have been building bunkers in they’r backyards for hundreds of years
His bunker is a lot cooler with access to it from the house and other places plus the new batman car lift is probably going to be amazing.
This project is highly informative. The complexities of digging and preparing the hole are impressive. Appreciate the detailed updates. Looking forward to the next one.
Zack: Doesn't want to run a generator to avoid being a nuisance to the neighbours.
Also Zack:
idk how you guys would do it. but you should make a tunnel to connect your bunker to colin's bunker.
I’m down
And if anyone could work it out it's probably Colin and you. Colin just seems to pick up any skill he needs and has an ability to think out solutions that to others would seem undo able, combined with your knowledge of the latest tech and probably more controlled design and understanding of what's strong enough er. Well....... Maybe need a few thousand miners and more dollars than even Mr Beast could bring to the project but great content.... 🤔 😉 😅
@@JerryRigEverything Need to get Elon and The Boring Company onboard

this dude jumped the shark. when he decided that he was going to sell dirt from his backyard, I kept waiting for him to say all the money goes to charity. I'm still waiting.
yah... my opinion of him just sank after all these years of being a fan.

Let's thank zack for 17 minutes of hole digging.
Right? That part of us no matter how old/young is both having a field day, and getting REALLY jealous at not only getting to dig BIG deep hole but doing it with the coolest toys.

@JerryRigEverything , I'm trying to be attentive at school and the formula for the volume of a cylinder should be: V = pi*r2(squared)*h. (yes, h in your case the length :), It's because you have to multiply the surface area of the circular base with the height(length) of the cylinder. Not just V= pi*r*h as you've said in the video..;) I hope your bunker won't tumble down after you realize this :D It would be a pity. Wish you all the best.
That's great you care about layers of soil to be buried in the same order. I am looking forward to start building the fence and for that I will also scrape away lots of soil preserving the upper layer - it is the richest soil that was formed over hundred of years. Thank you for knowledgeable content!😇
Hey, I don’t know if you have already planned on doing it but the space under the floor is perfect for storing food and water (on boats we do this all the time) nice project!!
Was gonna say, that floor void is perfect for storage
And Wiring, plumbing, hvac
*Radius is squared* , 3:24.
With the other radius saved Jerry might not be able to enter the bunker once it is buried.
My math teacher is so disappointed rn
I was worried that 50 years later I didn’t know how to do that but I did. You’re correct it’s pi*r**2 times the height
Correct, pie are squared but usually they come out round.
I was just finding this comment.
@JerryRigEverything 8 unskippable adds and a sponsor add plus a store promo selling dirt is taking the piss out of your viewers your video's are starting to become unwatchable probably going to unsubscribe and stop supporting if this keeps up I don't mind watching an add or even 2 at the beginning of the video and a sponsor in the middle but this is insane and just infuriating that not only you do all of that but you make what should be 1 video into 5 so you can make us watch 50+ adds
Jerry releases 3 parts of this series in about 2 weeks and there is a giant hole in his backyard already meanwhile there are potholes in my area that have seen me go through my entire life😂😂
It's easier for a man to dig a hole than to figure out how to fill one
Do something about it then.
My luck, I'd be in sporting-goods at walmart when the nuke or the tornado hit. 😳😵💫
Yeah, I agree. Time for the rich UA-camrs to start paying their share to society rather than circumnavigating taxes
This project is cool, but can we talk about those miniature horses? So adorable! ❤
They didn't look to happy with the digger!
Lucky Asphalt is totally recyclable and easily ground into new aggregate. Add a little asphaltic oil and heat it to mix it up. 11:03

bunkers are peaceful.. until they are worth the money...
Never thought I’d get a deepdive into bunker construction with all of these camera angles. Zack knew the assignment.
8:56 "I found an awesome rock" Average male experience
Zack showing us his cool pocket rock is the epitome of what this channel is about.
Better square that radius before introducing Pi and multiplying by the length. Otherwise, pretty much of the bunker is gonna be above ground, if you're calculating excavation volume.
I figured someone else already caught this error, I hope Zack did as well 😂.
And those bolts seemed way too small to hold the halves together.
Me and my partner couldn’t stop laughing at “you can see my asphalt ripple” as it sounded COMPLETELY different to us
On the Internet, We went from people selling bathwater to jars of dirt. 😂
Don't forget the fart jars
Jerry collecting rocks is the cutest thing I’ve seen in a while
"I got a jar of dirt, I got a jar of dirt" lol
It might be super neat to get a clear tube and create a representation of the different layers of dirt and depth to preserve how deep you got. You could keep it somewhere next to your barn or house or something
I’m fascinated to see how you make this bunker wheel chair friendly. I know it’ll be amazing as you are making it, and you have a talent for making cool functional things.
He said the entry and exit shafts will have elevators
Zack already has a made a video of him installing an elevator inside his home. He might install the same to the bunker.
as a backup, there's always a rope seat with a pulley in the elevator shaft
@@adityanewalkar8665 If it's a bunker, I would hope it's not a powered elevator. Or at the very least have a manual crank override. Circuit boards don't last forever, capacitors burn up, and who knows what else can go wrong with it. It'd suck to get stuck because your elevator was purely electric. So I would hope it's not the same as the one in his home

I was waiting for Blippi to jump out and start singing in this video
If you still have the ground open, it's a good opportunity to tap into a diy geothermal for your entire home.
Also that extra sand could be used to mix with your clay soil.
drill holes in one side of the flange and not the other. When you join tubes together drill the holes on the 2nd flange using 1st flange holes as your guide
that round rock you find, is shaped by the ocean, so fact is that your buttom at the bunker is placed at old sea-bed... good luck with the project. rgds fm Denmark. 🙂
Hey Zack. I got an idea you should totally put a engraved plate inside the bunker and mention the date until this bunker can be used, as you said in your first video they have a lifespan of 100 years, so that your grandkids and further down the line they don't hurt themselves.
Love from india
13:15 business first 💵💲💸💰🤑
Going well, lucky the soil is sandy and easy to dig that has saved a lot of time. Would be nice for a tunnel to the house, perhaps a later project. Looking awesome and honestly, there's not enough UA-camrs tunnelling, always room for more.
Like Colin furze 😂
you are lucky, as a civil engineering student in the netherlands, our top soil layers are peat and clay, and the ground water table is often at
surface level or technically even above the surface (polders that are beneath sea level) so this would be so much more complicated
Man on man are men something else. He found a rock and called it an "awesome rock", then gave us a whole backstory and history on rocks, after finally deciding he's gonna keep his rock. I love men 😭
As an architect student i can't wait to know how will the bunker perform overtime!
You should check out Colin Furze and his bunker.
I'm not sure how it performs or would perform overtime, but it's built and designed to last for a long time - over time.
How did Colin get council permission though? How will he sell his house? 🤯
@@MrPaulviles he actually said this in his last video.. well he kinda cheated a bit xD
@@MrPaulviles I remember him talking about getting permission - not sure what he had to go through but Im sure it wasnt simple :D As far as him selling the house, Id expect there would be more than a few who would want it as a unique thing as long as the house and foundations are sound.
I love this series man!
Seeing Zack picking up cool rocks digging for a bunker is the most bro thing
I like that the narwol just made the entire floor dirtyer and covered it in a layer of scrub.
The terraces are called benching. It's more cost effective as long as you're not in pavement where you have to buy expensive premium gravel or flowable backfill. In those cases you look at using shoring of a sort
It’s crazy how many sponsors he manages to pack in 1 project video
Given the costs I think it's necessary
@@urbanistiq8009 But he doesn't need a bunker. He wouldn't have to peddle trinkets to his viewers if he didn't choose to build an unnecessary bunker in the first place.
@@jorge69696 But he does need a bunker.

And he's selling idiots a jar of dirt lmao.
This is the best project someone has ever documented i love how this series just makes me happy and i even learn something new every time 😊
I recommend watching colin furze bunker and tunnel project also
3:27 multiply it by the _square_ of the radius 😉
I have to say I love the fact that the kiddo loves this project
We need a video of Zack and Colin Furze together talking about digging bunkers on their properties!
Also I love how no matter what, no matter how old the guy, you allow us to dig a hole, we'll not only take it as far as possible, but seeing the almost childlike excitement and wonder at the cool pretty rocks just brings a huge smile to my face 😂 Memo to self: Make sure when you're able in the future to buy enough land that you can dig really big holes, both by hand and by excavators! Figure out what to do with the gargantuan hole(s) afterwards! 😅
EDIT: Even the neighbour is vicariously enjoying it and wanting to get involved! 😂
Very informative this series is, as always. Also, once again thanks for the libraries and schools everyone 🇰🇪.
Wow, that fill is incredible. I love how easy it is to dig in. I'm working in an area where the ground is 50% large rocks and boulders. Digging is *interesting*.
Zack Is the only person on the planet that I'm willing to buy a glass of dirt from! Seriously, the man has a good heart.
You create a soft joint with the rubber seal. It would help to use spacers on each bolt location between the rubber to control the compression. Without that, you may lose a lot of the torque on those bolts in about a year or two.
You have perfect soil. Your excavation cost are probably 5 times less than many parts of the country. A hole in my yard starts by blasting 😂
Zack is like the cool uncle you see once every 2 months who lets you work in his garage and gifts you legos for your birthday and Christmas
13:20 great Zach has now officially become whistlindiesel 🤣
Not saying buying scrap metal Ferrari parts is better than dirt. But this is dirt! Dirt!
I'm in a wheelchair myself and when I asked if there was a way to make a bunker wheelchair accessible on the Atlas bunker UA-cam channel I was told cripples where gonna die.😡 Glad to see someone with a brain building a accessible bunker.
The volume of a cylinder is pi times the radius _squared_ times the length.
~4500 ft^3 is the right number for ~40’ of length though so he used the right equation when he actually calculated it.
Just make sure if you do any welding inside the tubes when underground that you have air monitors/ fans blowing air in from the outside. even if there is open air above you, check for methane, CO, SO2 and oxygen. Just took confined space training so this is on my mind haha
this is super cool and im lowkey jealous! can't wait to see the finished project.
I love you talk how incredibly heavy dirt is and how dangerous being in the hole can be and then proceeds to casually look for cool rocks while the excavator continues to dig
honestly I would have just made a rly big swimming pool, way more useful and great for chilling in the summer with the family. Bunker is cool, but it's that type of cool that sounds good only as a "crazy idea" that will never become reality, but hey cool to watch how it's getting done
Im glad that you appreciate no one alive has seen that rock until you came long. Its a modern day treasure.
Don't discount the extra strength and rigidity the flanges give you in the middle where it joins the two pieces. Forty feet is a long span, and you might just come to appreciate the midpoint reinforcement.
Yeah but that rubber sealing method they used won't hold up, and they never applied any rust preventative coating to the raw steel where they ground off the factory coating
@@andrewlondon3461 You don't know that. This is an edited video, and just because you didn't see it doesn't mean that it didn't happen. Plus, he mentioned that they were going to do that both in this video and in the prior one where they welded on the flanges.
@JerryRigEverything I am assuming you fixed the raw steel like you said you would. Andrew does make a point about the rubber though. A good layer in the joint of a good weather seal product is not a bad idea. I have seen Flex Seal putty actually instantly stop a deep pour resin leak, but I don't know how well it will hold up underground. I would think a good quality caulking of some kind is in order.
agh..scamming people for 10 bucks for some dirt is quite outrageous
I like the bunker videos.... that being said, selling dirt from your yard cheapens your channel. Bathwater next? Keep up the great videos with your normal sponsors.
Could have rented a sod cutter and removed the sod (grass), stored the rolls out of the way and can then roll the sod back down once finished. It is WAY FUN moving sod rolls and laying sod. OK, easier to replant after the project is over.
Zack learning a thing or two from Linus smoothly merching jars of dirt. 😂👍👍👍
“The volume of my cylinder is 4,500 cubic feet”
Glad to see folks learning the cool stuff we get to do as civils! I was wondering if you’d figure out the BCY vs LCY in this video. It’s crazy how much soil expands when it’s excavated, but it makes sense when you realize the weights involved
Great video Zack!! I know that you have the lift for going between floors for Cambry. If you wanted to, could you add a basement and/or sub-basement and connect that to the bunker, lessening the immediate need to install a lift to the bunker? I know it may introduce more logistical issues, just a thought, and having an alternate access never hurts. Loving the project so far, and looking forward to seeing what you are going to do with the interior. I have an idea of how you are approaching it, but you have been full of surprises, and I like to see what happens.
I've seen and been in several bunkers. My first was two deferent bunkers in Germany used by the German military in WWII. Then when I was stationed in Korea, up at the DMZ, I went into three bunker tunnels. Here in the U.S., I have been in one of the Titan missile sites. Great project Jerry.
The western coast of Denmark is full of old left-behind German bunkers just lying around. There are probably around 50 of them within a handful of kilometers of me right now.
Zack and Cambry are so cute and wholesome. always fun to see them together on screen
14:20 Kranplätze müssen verdichtet sein

Dude is so successful he's selling jars of dirt for 10 bucks.
My main concern is radiation penetration. While I understand the decision to avoid concrete due to cost, I strongly suggest considering additional concrete layers for enhanced radiation protection. Given the versatility of this shelter, including protection against scenarios like nuclear war would be beneficial.
Sand is also a good blocker of radiation.
Apparently, 7 inches of sand is equivalent to 1 inch of lead.
Colin Furze will cry watching this as he dug his by had over the last few years and still has so much to do :)
i watched a few prepper videos and a few bunker company videos. one of the most simple and over looked systems is air purification and simply to have a reasonable distance between air intake and exhaust venting
How has no one noticed that he said pi times radius, not radius squared!!?!?!?!
hell yes. another part of this great series
Yay the american Colinfurze 😂
Rubber seals? Oh I think you should rethink that one. Rubber shrinks as it ages and isn't a perfect seal against water anyway. Those joints need to be welded. You have to build these things in the same way as you build a boat
