- Presenting Kālinga Nartana Thillāna, a famous and vibrant composition of Oothukaadu Sri Venkata Kavi, extolling the splendour of Lord Krishna's Kālinga Nartanam. Surrendering to the slayer of the Serpent King Kalinga, the annihilator of our Ahamkaara, this dramatic composition pictures the Lord's dance in our mind's eye.

This is a challenging composition of the poet, with packed lyrics and solkattus that echo the tumultuous movements of the snakes, the surging waves of the sea and the brisk dance of Krishna. Owing to its complexity, some of us could have not perceived the exact lyrics (as performers as well as audience). And since this composition has been made very famous by artistes with their lively rendition, we have probably not wondered about the correctness of the lyrics.
My first and foremost thanks to Sri Kuldeep M Pai. I wouldn't have laid my hands on this project, if not for the initiation of Kuldeep, who had asked me to help with finding the correct lyrics of the song.
My heartfelt Pranams and thanks to Dr. U.R. Giridharan who has magnanimously and graciously published a video of the lyrics and meaning of this song on UA-cam ( LINK). My sincere thanks to Sri Mohan of Samskritha Bharathi who helped immensely with understanding the split of words and their meanings.
The version of the song that we performed many years back, and has been made famous by many artistes and art lovers so far, is an abridged version with some words misinterpreted. Now, after thorough research, we humbly publish this dance presentation to the unabridged version of the song with authentic lyrics.
Our heartfelt thanks to Sri Ramaswami, Preseident, Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan, Mylapore for magnanimously helping us with the venue.

Today it finally clicked why I enjoy watching SDN dance dramas so much. Many times I see, artistes, in attempts to portray characters, lose their individuality. The portrayal becomes very mechanical and disconnected.
And the fine dancers of SDN, I’ve noticed, somehow manage to portray these characters while preserving their natural mannerisms. It makes the characters feel more layered, nuanced and honestly, much more real. It’s
like the difference between looking at a picture of a person, versus watching how they actually behave.
Bhairavi Ma’am’s Srinivasa is THE Srinivasa. No one else can match that portrayal, according to me. Her Krishna is exactly what I visualise when I think of Krishna. Now, even my own imagination can’t match this depiction of Krishna.
I’ve commented this on other videos before as well. Part of the magic is the choreography. The other part is making the characters come alive. Thank you, Sheela ma’am and Sridevi Nrithyalaya, for doing all that you do. 🙏
Yes, that was a missing part for me too. Though putting aside personality in order to perform a role, still these ladies have their own spin so to say, and this makes it wonderfull.
That Girl who plays Krishna...may be its Krishna who has captured her soul for this performance.... Tears of joy seeing the performance..... The other girls weren't there, only Kalinga the snake was there such was their flexibility and grace.

Whatever we missed out by not being born in Vrajabhoomi when Krishna actually danced on Kalinga in Dwapara, that very divine sight has been brought before our eyes by this crew. Fantastic work by the dancers, musicians and the Guru! Much thanks for showing the bloopers for two reasons - a) helped show the awesome effort put in by you all, and b) brought us back to the reality of Kaliyuga from the time travel we had. Bhairavi honestly beats the Krishna of my imagination. Now any time I think of Krishna I am reminded of Bhairavi and vice versa. Beautiful rendition. The messages were clearly portrayed. The energy was maintained till the very. Despite the many stops as we see in the bloopers the dancers gracefully maintained the continuity of the item. Since the day it was posted I have heard it at least thrice everyday. I can't get enough of it. The musical ensemble is also perfect as usual. In love with this. This has brought me closer to Krishna more than ever. Perfect. Thank u so much SdN for posting the entire version and given the viewers this pleasure.

Arthi A You have conveyed what was in my heart. I am transported to another Yuga and can see Kalinga, Krishna, the river and even the Herd of cows that get poisoned. Now I am no dancer nor do I know ABZs of Barathanatyam, yet I feel transported and see only Krishna and not Bhairavi. One thing that keeps coming back to my mind is the Teacher's efforts and the students' discipline in adhering to the teacher. This video and the same one by Kuldeep pai sir and the duo Rahul and Sooriyagayathri are on loop on my phone and its my morning noon and night routine. Feel blessed to have come across the same.
Totally inappropriate to compare mere mortals to God Supreme! It is not only absurd to conceive and limit the Infinite Absolute within the confines of a human life form, but also offensive, blasphemous and sinful. Cannot believe SDN is encouraging such words and thoughts.
A word of caution to SDN - while some artistic liberties are allowed for the representation/portrayal of the Supreme Almighty, don't get carried away to break the boundaries of abstraction.
@@mteverest7673 This is not Christianity, but the Sanatana Dharma. So it is absolutely not blasphemous or sinful or other monotheist nonsense. Our Hindu Devataas are embodied in mountains, mounds of rock, formed mud piles in which they've been invoked and twigs of grass; they're embodied in the entire world and universe.
Only the Hindu Devataas are depicted in this video, so monotheist conceptions of blasphemy do not apply at all and monotheists have no say. In Hinduism, in the Hindu dance and drama forms as set out in Naatya Shaastras, the Hindu dancers, being bhaktas, are meant to try and embody (as much as is humanly possible) the aspect and gunas of the Devataas they're depicting, of the paramaatman; just as the music and lyrics tries to do so in Nada form and meaning. The dancers are meant to depict the Vedic religion, conveying the Vaidika Dharma through itihaasas and puraaNas to the audience thereby. SDN achieves all of this superbly and makes it look effortless, adhering to the shaastras on natyam correctly. Namaskaaram, SDN (guru, dancers, musicians, other staff). Thanks for not listening to crypto monotheists: twitter accounts exposed as Paki have also tried telling Hindus that dressing up as Hindu Gods in Hindu plays should be banned. It irks only monotheists, whereas it is very correct as per our Shaastras.
Aarti A only said that Smt Bhairavi's depiction of Shri Krishna beat her imagination of him, thus raising the bar for her imagination, not that it beat Sri Krishna Himself. She now is able to better envision Sri Krishna thanks to bhakta Smt Bhairavi's authentic depiction elevating her imagination. I often associate any turtle and tortoise with the Koormaavataaram. Neither is blasphemous, but is a natural result of Sanatana Dharma instilling a sense of wonder at the pervasiveness of Vedic Divinity.
Smt Bhairavi embodies her Father Sri Krishna superbly. Thank you to her and all SDN for the re-enactment of this divine leela so bhaktas like myself can witness it with human eyes.

Need 1000 eyes to see this dance, watched atleast 5 times. Harinie Jeevitha's voice over? I wonder how many talents she holds within. Mrithangam and male voice are solid and definitely Kalinga would surrender. Flute was like Krishna himself played it. 5 stars out of 5.

This is the first time I have seen Kālinga Nartana Thillāna as a Dance and it was brilliant. It's already a difficult item as just music but to choreograph this and then execute a brilliant dance takes teamwork, dedication, and leadership. Thank you - all the members of the group who made this possible on and off the screen.

Oh wow. This is a lot. They are literally embodying Lila. Bhairavi is honestly so perfect as Krishna I called her him more than a few times. 😂 But seriously. I shed a tear. The rhythm, the harmony, the contrast of feminine vs the masculine, the superb abhinaya- all come together in a beautiful portrayal of the divine. The bloopers at the end really just emphasized all of yours' dedication to this art that extends beyond art. Absolutely brilliant. Radiant.

The Krishna is so superb and the four supporting dancers are more than superb. The co-ordination, the synergy, the synchronisation of these four is simply fabulous. The dance is beautifully performed and I think this is my favourite one from your channel. Apart from all the talent it is also experienced that how ma'am keep giving chance to all her students to be centre of attraction in different projects.
