- Dasavataram: This song extols the ten incarnations of Maha Vishnu, who reclines on Adisesha in the Milky ocean. This is a classic composition in which lyrics have been penned by Udumalai Sri Narayana Kavi and music composed by Sri G. Ramanathan.
Matsya Avatara-
To restore the Vedas from demon Somukha, who stole the four Vedas from Lord Brahma and hid them under the ocean, Maha Vishnu, on the request of Brahma, incarnated as a mighty fish to defeat the demon and retrieve the Vedas for the well being of man kind.
Koorma Avatara-
As the Devas and Asuras begin churning the milky ocean in a thirst for the elixir of immortality, the Mandara mountain is used as the churner. During the churning, when the mountain begins to sink and the Devas and Asuras are left helpless, unable to continue the churning, Maha Vishnu's timely manifestation as a tortoise is the legend of the Avatara. The Lord bears the mountain on His shell and felicitates the churning.
Varaha Avatara-
Hiranyaksha, a heinous demon, approaches and attacks Mother Earth by rolling Her like a rug and hides Her inside the ocean. Bhu Devi (Mother Earth), who was held captive by the demon, pleads Maha Vishnu for help. The Lord compassionately assumes the form of a boar with His tusks raises Her aloft from the depths of the ocean, thereby rescuing Her from his clutches. The Lord, as Varaha, also destroys the evil Hiranyaksha in a combat.
Narasimha Avatara-
Prahlada, the pious and devout son of King Hiranyakashipu, is ever immersed in the thought of Narayana. Hiranyakashipu, being an enemy of Maha Vishnu, is annoyed and enraged by his son's devotion to the Lord, and asks the child where Vishnu is. As Prahlada promptly replies saying that his Lord is everywhere, Maha Vishnu, the omnipresent Lord breaks open a pillar in the palace and arrives in front of Prahlada and Hiranyakashipu in a gory yet majestic form of a half-man and half-lion.
Vamana Avatara-
As King Mahabali was performing the Yagna, the Lord approached the King as an invincible dwarf who appeared there in order to put an end to Bali's growing powers and supremacy and thereby protect the Devas. When the King was ready to offer anything to the dwarf, the Lord asked him for three feet of land. Taking the miniscule plea for granted, King Mahabali agreed to offer Him the three feet of land, despite Sage Sukracharya, his Guru, advising him that the dwarf was no ordinary human. As King Bali offered Him the three feet of land, the Lord takes the Viswaroopa and grows infinitely. His first step touched the land, the second step reached the Heavens and when the Lord asked the King where the third step should be placed, the King understood the Lord's play and surrendered to Him, asking Him to place the third step on his head. The Lord places His foot on Mahabali's head and sends him to Paathaala (Netherworld).
Parasurama Avatara-
In this Avatara, the Lord incarnated as a valorous Brahmin who took to destroying the arrogant Kshatriyas with his 'Parashu' (axe). It is said that the Lord, as Parashurama, travelled the whole Earth killing the sons of Kartavirya and the arrogant Kshatriyas to avenge the killing of His father, Jamadagni.
Rama Avatara-
The seventh incarnation of Maha Vishnu is the well known Rama Avatara, where in He is born to King Dasaratha in the Solar Dynasty in Ayodhya. Stories of Rama's feats are popularly mentioned in different lores. When the ten-headed Ravana of Lanka held the Ashta-dik Paalakas (Gods of the eight directions) captive, Lord Sri Rama, the stoic prince, came to their rescue and defeated Ravana and the other Asuras.
Balarama Avatara-
In this incarnation, the powerful and mighty Balarama or Baladeva was born as the seventh child to Devaki and Vasudeva. Balarama, with His strong arms, conquered river Yamuna by tilling the land with His Halayudha (weapon of plough).
Krishna Avatara-
Ever surrounded and adored by Gopis and the cows, Krishna, the charming Lord becomes the darling son of Yashoda and Nandagopa. The lores of Sri Krishna right from His birth to the end of His incarnation, are compiled in Srimad Bhagavatham. Krishna, the cousin and protector of the Pandavas, puppeteered the Kurukshetra war between the two groups of brothers- Pandavas and Kauravas, and ensured the victory of the former. Krishna's Upadesha to Arjuna on the battle field are recorded as verses and compiled as the 'Bhagavad Gita'.
Avatara of Kali Yuga-
When deceit, treachery, manipulations, injustice and evil practises become a commonality, and when the actors of this farcical drama in the playhouse of Kali Yuga indulge in illicit deeds fearlessly, Maha Vishnu manifests as the compassionate Lord to restore Dharma in this last Yuga.

The moment Lord Krishna enters, there is a change of mood, from composed seriousness to burst of joy. Then a dark girl is representing Lord Krishna.
So intricate yet so beautiful
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE KEEP USING ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS FOR US ENG SPEAKERS BECAUSE THEY JUST ABSOLUTELY ADD TO THE BEAUTY OF ALL BHARATANATYAMS ADDING TO THE STORY MAKING IT MORE OPULENT Jai Jagannath 🙏🏽❤
Very true.. Adding English subtitles are icing on the cake. Absolutely understand the bhaavam(expression) of the natya mayuris but with the subtitles the bhaavam enhanced more( who can't understand Tamil hymns like me) 🙏🙂.

I am glad I can see this at convenience and free of cost, but I would pay to see this live
Me too if I could remember how to spell the name of the artist...lol... or get someone at the venue on the phone to identify the artist correctly when I am able to pronounce them would be a plus where I am in the world.
Just enjoy the art.
same thing i was thinking, i was imagining that I was a king or businessman and for their Art and devotion and with this the service they are offering to their Dharm, I was gifting them 1 lac gold Coin to each and I was thinking if they deserving more, if I will be justifying with them with this then I returned to present ..left smiling all i could do was just watched this beautiful performance till the end with great focus and interest
India doesn't get enough credit for it's beautiful history and culture.

Take care & Get well soon.
harini, bhairavi .................... grate work...........
Such a beautiful ensemble! Each dancer is an expert in this art. The stories are told without props or costume changes. Characters emerge, then disappear like a vapor. You all take us, the audience, on an ethereal, supernatural, journey.
One has to watch SDN productions multiple times carefully to understand & enjoy them fully. This choreography too is no exception and is one of the, if not, THE main reason SDN's dances remain fully captivating/engaging after countless viewings. Here is what I found after watching 4/5 times.
1. Time 1:23 Devotees get to see PaLLikonda (recumbent) Sri Ranganathar gazing towards them (interesting & intended camera angle, not a whim). This recreates the gaze of Sri Ranganathar towards Lanka (South) to bless Vibhishana and devotees in the audience after Vibhishana brought Ranga Vimana all the way to Srirangam and Lord Ranganatha refused to leave Srirangam to keep his promise to Kaveri
2. Time 4:14 - time 4:24 and time 4:40 - time 4:47 See the beautiful depiction of Mandaragiri (Mandara mountain) sinking slowly into the milky ocean because there is nothing to hold it up until Koorma avataram at time 4:52 - time 4:57 when it rises again supported on the back of Koorma avataram. Now go back to time 4:48 and see the different reactions of Asuras (on viewer's left) and Devas (on the right). Some one tell me honestly that they got all this in one viewing! If so, power to you!!
3. Time 6:47 when Hiranyakashipu (Bhairavi) throws down PrahlAdA (Mridula), see the reaction on PrahlAda's face. He is always respectful of his father Hiranyakashipu but worships and is utterly devoted to Sriman Narayana alone and never afraid of his father. So the calm & smiling depiction of PrahlAdA throughout Narasimha avataram is not by chance but by design.
4. Time 7:19 Camera zooms in on Narasimha avataram (Sanjena) when HE leaps off the vertically split pillar (shown by Harine and Mridula moving away from each other!!). Beautifully choreographed & zoomed in to show the dramatic appearance of part-man part-lion Narasimha avataram.
5. Time 8:25 - time 9:21 Closely watch King MahaBali & his guru's actions/reactions. MahaBali has grown too powerful after his Yagna. Watch, especially, his guru's advise and depiction of Mahabali's reaction which conveys in a subtle way MahaBali's intellect and how he decides to surrender because of his reverence of the Lord. And as a reward when he sees Lord's Vishwaroopam at time 9:08, measuring earth and heavens in two steps, see the bliss on his face. Authentic choreography being true to the epics!!! Nothing left to chance or whim!!
6. Some day, I may update this with all the nuances I see in Krishna Avataram. Likely to be as long as this comment! I am sure I've missed lot more subtle and not-so-subtle depictions. 🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️ to Guru Dr. Smt Sheela and all the SDNs!
WOW! This is NOT just an ordinary comment but a thesis on this dance number !!! :)
I too saw this dance multiple times including once on a 52" screen with my grand kids! :)

Awesome performance. I am from central India, I wish I knew Tamil then I could have appreciated this work even more!
Baby Krishna's entry just lifted the already wonderful work to a whole new level with burst of joy and change in music and rythm. Another one I liked particularly was Vaman Avatar and Raja Bali section.
How tactfully Harinie kept her foot as Vamanan on her head without disturbing her attire... Such a balance.... Excellent choreography again mam 💐💐💐🙏🙏🙏

Amazing cinematography and set design. I love that SDN never cut out the feet of the dancers from the frame. You dancers are truly gifted!
Where would we all be without a daily dose of Bharathanatyam ? Thank-you for the Videos.
I like that the subtitles are added. Love that, actually, and the singer, too. It's all so good... & hypnotic, tbh.

I am very glad that an explanation about this dancing is provided, which definitely helps me understand the dance better. Thank you for sharing🙏
All Avatars portrayed perfectly. I liked Vamana, the most.
Brilliant choreography, executed with grace.
Thank you.
Yes, Sir, I too liked the Vamana most. It was fun, divine, and profoundly moving when Mahabali realized his folly. But I should say it was ALL fantastic.
For the first time in life, I understand the song... It makes the dance more enjoyable. Thanks you guys for using English subtitle...
That was incredible!! I have never seen an literary epic acted out in beautiful dancing ...and with the translations..It is absolutely breathtaking!
That was beautiful. Some parts even majestic. I was reluctant to read because I didn't want to take my eyes off them.
I have watched this multiple times and I see something new every time, I watch it. Amazing, such talent and work, went in to this production. These ladies are full of grace and have years of training.

I don't understand tamil and don't have any relation with Bharatnatyam or any classical dance but after watching this performance. I can undoubtedly say if storytelling is an art , than its purest form is here in the expression of these seven gorgeous ladies 💕

This was a lovely performance..
The Lord narasimha and Vaamana avatar part was mesmerizing...
Bhairavi is just so perfect to play Lord Krishna❤️. All the Krishna roles that she performed just flashed the moment she jumped to pose as krishna❤️.
After seeing this act, i would love to see a seperate act for the Lord narasimha avatar version..
Srikanth sir's singing is already feels like the vocal version of Prahlad's Bhakthi...
It will be great to see a seperate act for Lord Narasimha avatar story.
Thank you so much!!! I just saw all avatars of My Narayana 🤩
Very great and amazing performance! I can watch this video again and again without getting tired of it. : )
Beautiful performance. I am falling short of words, the Om Namoh Narayana part is out of this world. Felt like that chant was coming straight out of the Lord's abode. I am glad that you let us witness this art in its finest form. You all are taking Bharathanatyam to a whole new level.. Thank you SDN. Keep spreading joy. 🙏❤️
So happy reading your heartfelt words... thank you 🙏🏽
When they chant Om Namo Narayanaya; it was extremely devine
I could not comment before because I was too deeply moved in previous viewings. Even now, I have paused the video near the start so I can finally comment. I wish to convey my deepest gratitude for this, which is the very embodiment of Sri Hari.
In ages past, long-lived rishis and supreme bhaktas waited yugas to witness our Bhagavaan's avataras. Many of them would take entire lifetimes to experience, and some were not for human witness (Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, even Narasimha and Vamana), having been witnessed rather by the Suras and Asuras, Rishis and Rakshasas. Also one would need divyachakshus besides the blessings of Sri Hari.
Because of the Divine bharatanatyam performed authentically here by SDN's bhakti-filled nartakis under the guidance of the bhakta guru, and the auspicious Narayana mantram with divine vocals and instrumentation by SDN's musicians, I and other bhaktas can now witness the divine essence of all the avataras of our Lakshmi-Narayanan. Repeatedly, and at wish. Encompassed in a mere quarter of an hour. What good fortune our Lakshmi Thaayaar and Appa Hari have bestowed on us through SDN. This experience you all at SDN have provided bhaktas is how I imagine having attained Vaikuntham feels like, full of this joy, full of Sri Hari. May our Lakshmi-Naaraayana bless SDN to continue your successful endeavours in uniting all bhaktas with Sri Hari. For me, it is an ideal way to Saayujyam with Amma-Appa in Kaliyugam, as it feels effortless for bhaktas like myself to experience the stated goals of our Hindu Natyashaastras (just as intended) merely through watching. My namaskaaras.

Splendid! I didn't get any words to describe this... Only one thing I can give and that is my sincere pranams🙏to all those who invloved in bringing this!! Lovely❤️👑🔥
This is so beautiful!
Fantastic singing, choreography and set design! Beautiful formations and dancing! Need to watch multiple times to follow the depictions fully. For example, see how Mandragiri sinking in Milky ocean is depicted beautifully, unobtrusively multiple times and with Koorma avatar's help, it rises again. Krishna's depictions in Gokulam and then in Kurukshetra battle filed delivering Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna are mesmerizing. Watch the Gopi's blissful dancing with Krishna, Arjuna's despondence and Lord's Vishwaroopa darshan to Arjuna before imparting Bhagvad Gita!! Utterly captivating!!! Divine expressions on all the dancers' faces. You SDNs are so blessed; continue dancing forever under SDN banner! Each production is raising the bar for excellence! Thank you so much! Love you all SDNs 💐💐💐❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏
