    Oh good grief :O I am in awe how you can tear that skirt apart and put it back together.....I just sew up the sides as much needed and call it day like a newbie! :D Great video.

    Thank you so much for this!
    I've spent weeks carefully constructing a skirt for my friend (I'm what I'd call a confident beginner, and this is the first item for anyone other than myself). Anyway it turns out it needs taken in at the waist, and I've spent hours staring blankly at it, too terrified to ruin it! This has given me the knowledge to have a go now, rather than try to make it up as I go along!
    Thanks to you all my hard work won't go to waste now hopefully!
    😘

    When you sew a lapped side zipper is it normal for the zipper to look angled? I sewed one into a half circle skirt and it’s looks like it’s at an angle, it’s not falling straight up and down

    This is definitely the video I needed. The skirt I want to work on has a zipper and lining AND you show all the right parts AND explain what you're doing in an understandable way. (Can I add anymore "and's" into one sentence?)
    Time to watch this video 16 times in a row to make sure I get it right!

    Thank you so much !! I got a new skirt today which is a little big around my waist. Normally my grandma would fix it for me but her eyesight isn't what it used to be so she struggls sewing. Thank you for making such a clear easy to follow video! My grandma will be proud to see I've fixed it myself

    Thank you sooo much for this video! (I'm a little late finding it--hahahaha--but that's the wonder of the internet.) I had a skirt to take in that I'd been putting off out of fear, and now I finally sat down to do it and it came out perfectly! I am so happy! :D

    If you have a skirt (or dress) with large, wide pleats, is it possible to take in the sides so that the skirt is more straight?

    • @Howtoloveyourhome
      @Howtoloveyourhome  5 років тому

      It is possible by removing the skirt from the waistband then reattaching where it fits appropriately. The possible negative results are the pleats that have been pressed in may not be as easily pressed out for a flat look. Try pressing the pleats prior to removing from waistband. See if it works before doing all that work with a poor results. The skirt will definitely show you if it won't work. Good luck, I hope it goes well for you...

    What if the waist fits, but I dont like how "poofy" it is and want it to be less flowy and sit closer to my legs?

    I found this gorgeous embroidered skirt at the thrift store last month, but it was just a size too big. I kept on wanting to wear it but it just looked so baggy. I can't wait to alter it and finally be able to wear it. Thank-you for the video😊

    In most cases it's not necessary toalter both sides. If there are more seams in the skirt,other than the sides, take in those seams equally. I mentioned that in the video. If there is a symmetrical design on the skirt, take in the zipper side too. Invisible zippers can be a little tricky if you haven't sewn one. They are bought in a little kit w/sewing instructions and are found at stores where you buy notions. Try to sew as close to the zipper as possible. Use a lot of pins!.

    Can a pencil slim dress which is bit too big on the skirt area be tapered in from the backseam rather than both sides. The material is a stretchy material and the amount to betaken in is not that much, so I don't think it will affect the fit of the dress any where else. I have pinned it roughly and it looks o.k. The side seams of the dress are still in place.Thank you.

    Hi, thx 4 video, very helpful with my first alteration. I also have a skirt with side zipper and just noticed that there is a centre back seam...can i just take it in from the back or should i open up and take in the sides. Its a suede skirt and a little worries i may ruin it. Thx

    Thank you! I'm in the process of doing this one a lined Pendelton wool pencil skirt. Luckily the seams came out nicely. I wish I had a mannequin or dress form because I'm not able to pen the thing on myself. Any suggestions?

      2JobsStillPoorUSA Try on inside out, use safety pins to secure. I have a lot of luck with that.

    What if the skirt has side invisible pockets. Do you have to remove the pockets as well? Thinking pockets won't look right if we just sew down the seam?

    • @Howtoloveyourhome
      @Howtoloveyourhome  7 років тому

      I would most likely remove the pocket and reinsert it into that seam. Sewing the sides of the pocket along the side of the skirt. Then, when resewing the side seam of the skirt together, go around the pocket's edge and back down the skirt seam again. Besides, pockets in women's clothes is the best bonus ever. I wish all my dresses and skirts came that way.

    Your tutorial is excellent my daughter has lost weight and has handed me a fully line elastic waistband skirt which she wants me to make smaller. What I would like to know is if I take it in on both sides as you have shown do I cut the elastic waist band which is badly stretched and then resew to fit the new waist line

    • @Howtoloveyourhome
      @Howtoloveyourhome  8 років тому

      +Desiree Greyling If there are no seams or darts in the front or back of the skirt, or she wouldn't tuck a top in, one side taken in is perfect. If the skirt will stay in place when she is wearing it, there would be no reason to replace the elastic, however, I would remove the stretched elastic in there now. It's usually annoying to look at something that worn!

    • @desireegreyling2411
      @desireegreyling2411 8 років тому

      +Howtoloveyourhome Thank you very much for your help. The skirt has two sides. I have already removed the lining and original skirt from the waist band, then I have cut it and taken in the sides just a little, as I do not have any of this elastic I will just make do with the old one. The material is so thin it looks like muslin and it is already making little holes all over. So under the circumstances I think the best is to do what you say and when I am able to get the proper elastic so that I will be able to replace any other skirts of hers which need it more than this one. This is my guinea pig and trial run. Thank you once again for your help. Watching your video again as a bit of a refresher. Des

    • @Howtoloveyourhome
      @Howtoloveyourhome  4 роки тому +1

      I took it in on one side because the zipper was on the side. If the zipper is back, I'd take the skirt in on both sides. Hope this helps.

    I have a lined skirt with the zipper on the side, and two small darts in the back. the only seams are on the sides. How do I take in the side? Do I just take in the side without the zipper, and what about the small darts?

    • @Howtoloveyourhome
      @Howtoloveyourhome  9 років тому

      Julie Fruin I would adjust an equal amount on the seam side & the zipper side. However, if you wear a top on the outside, just take it in on the non-zipper side.
