Because what used to be a sleepy town in the 80s, back when most homes didn't have central air because you didn't need it, is now unaffordable, crowded, hot, with way more crime. The median income in the Springs is now $141,000, which was unheard of before. It's become the next Boulder, where only the very well-off can afford to live here anymore. A lot of us don't feel that a few cool new restaurants is worth the dramatic change.

When I moved there in 2007 it was very quiet and never had traffic. That changed around 2016. I don't like it as much anymore but I bought my house cheap when they were. Having said that, upgrading is out of the question with how much homes have increased in price. It's in the top 5 most expensive states for homes.

We moved here because of my husband's job. Living on base was not a choice because of the insane wait (18+ months when we moved here) at all of them. We had no choice but to rent (which sucks) because all of the decent homes were well over our budget. There are NO livable houses in this city for under 400k now. And unfortunately, with the increase on mortgage rates and interest rates, it pretty much priced us out of everything. Add to that that there are no decent paying jobs here unless you have a security clearance or connections.
There's also issues with the homeless and panhandlers, car theft, violent crime and scams in this city that I haven't encountered any other place I have lived in the U.S.

Colorado Springs is great. The weather is by far the best I lived in, and I've lived in many. In 1- max 2 years you get fully accommodated with the altitude, sooner if you exercise. All during winter there are many days you can get out in shorts and tee shirt. The summer is moderate, and you don't need air conditioning like in upstate NY, or Florida to name a couple of places. This woman has no idea, just badmouthing one of the best places to live in since everything gets a bit passe after a couple of decades. You want a worst place, go to Denver, but even there is better than most of the nation. No bugs and no mosquito in Colorado Springs too. The only thing bad here is the lack of a beautiful ocean and lack of a local ski slope, but if you truly are into sports and outdoors, Colorado Springs is still the best place to be.

I’ll share why we just went under contract on a home in CO springs. We are moving from Fort Worth for my husbands job transfer. His job is based out of Denver but we cannot find ANYWHERE to live in Denver that is not only in our budget but NOT under contract immediately. So the hour commute versus the cost is absolutely worth it.

Colorado Springs has wonky weather: 9 months of winter; 1.5 hours of spring, summer fluctuates and is about 2-3 months. I have lived in other places and find this the least hospitable...people and weather wise. Only people who don't know anything better really like it. Those from the East like it more than people who are from the West.
The architecture is ugly. It is not eco friendly. Heavy crime thanks to the number of people suffering from PTSD and are armed (5 military installations.) Very expensive groceries and housing for less. I look forward to expanding to Texas. The best = the library system, mail-in ballots and the COS airport. Generally it is not for city dwellers used to sophisticated offerings and style.BTW I have lived here for 25 years by default. I moved here for the altitude.
I appreciate your viewpoint and agree. I am happy to have lived in better places.

Interesting. We just got here from Florida. We did our research and visited the area for several weeks before pulling the trigger. We lived in Orlando, Florida before - there certainly aspects of Florida we enjoyed but the reality is for us the summers were brutally hot and humid. July 3rd it was 97F with 97% humidity - the "feels like" temp was over 120F. That's hotter than a sauna you can't leave. That wasn't a one-off day either - very common in the summers. We considered moving to Tampa, but then you have to deal with hurricanes every few years - perhaps a big one every couple decades. I will say the winters were glorious. Then all the issues with increased property insurance and crazy traffic.
No place is perfect. The best places to live rarely stay that way for long because so many people move there. Remember when California was a paradise? High taxes and cost of living ruined the dream. Now Californians are fleeing their state for other places like Idaho, Colorado, Texas, and even Florida. Now you have folks joke about _their state_ being "full" - or telling Californians to go ruin someone else's state. Anyone that tells me Colorado is full hasn't been to Limon - it still looks empty to me.
For better or worse, the Springs is growing and will continue to do so. It's still a great place to live - but we need to have smarter growth to remain that way - which means getting ahead of the issue instead of being reactive.
I do advise anyone wanting to move here to rent for 3-6 months over the winter months. If you are good with that, you are golden.

The Springs is way over rated. Moved to Fremont County and work in The Springs. 7 years. Pros. Mountains, climate, outdoor rec. That's it. Everything else is sub par. Not quite 1 million people in the area. Lacking bars and restaurants. Let's talk about drugs, theft and in general lack of accountability. I've lived in every region except the NE. This is the scumiest population I've ever experienced. Even working at fortune 500's nothing functions as it should. Road rage. Look up the number of unsolved murders as a direct result of road rage. This goes along with hit and runs. It's the norm here. The veterans, i am one, come across as you owe them something. There's spots of sanity in Colorado. The tourist towns and the more dense Hispanic community's. The front range in general with The Springs leading the way suck.

    • @JasonTaylor-po5xc

Life is short. If you don't like the area - move. Too expensive to move? Sell all your crap and hop on a bus. That's what I did - but I moved _to_ the Springs. Still relatively warm, decent people compared to other places in Colorado. I'm sorry if this hasn't been your experience. Not exactly Southern hospitality but still good folks. The South isn't what it used to be either (both good and bad). I'm not a vet, but my father is. We owe them a debt of gratitude for our freedom. Any time I find out someone served in the armed forces, I thank them for their service. I think that is reasonable.

What you are describing is happening to a lot of places. In fact, everywhere I go that is either naturally attractive or has a great culture is experiencing overpopulation. It is especially hard on those who can remember what it was like 20 years ago or more. I would still move to the Springs if I could. DFW has a LOT more people and very little for those who love the outdoors. I know to someone who lives in your city that it now feels crowded and different (not in a good way). I think y'all are gonna be next. The Midwest is now one of the last affordable places in the US for the middle class. Folks can sell their homes here, buy a house outright there and still have plenty to live on before they even get a job. The middle class can actually thrive there. Heck, they can even homestead there. Problem is, that's gonna do what it did here - drive your prices up and congest everything.
The only reason you may avoid it is climate change. Even when I lived in NE from 1991-2000, phew those hot humid summers. Then the arctic winds that would blow through your bones in the winter lol. It's only gonna get hotter so it may not be the most popular destination for the long-run. But for the next decade or so? It might be.

  • @rvnsglcr7861

The video is about Colorado Springs, not the rest of the state.
The idea that Colorado Springs has been a good place to live has largely been a result of marketing.
The reality is that Colorado Springs in particular has lead the entire nation for adolescent to young adult suicidality. Its zoning and urban design is terrible, making much of the Springs a glorified strip mall. Many of the faith-based organizations in the Springs would be viewed as regressive fundamentalist cults in any more functional society (ones that don't have something like the aforementioned high rate of suicide).
It's important to make assessments based on data and facts rather than speculation and subjective "vibes" regarding the character of a place.
For the record: I am a world traveled person, military retiree. Colorado Springs is not now and hasn't been a good place for someone to hang their hat for some time. It's certainly not a good place to raise children.

I live in Greccio Housing (non-profit affordable housing). 10 years ago, I applied, was approved, signed the lease and moved in within 10 days. Now? They have a year-long wait list at minimum. Even my one bedroom apartment, in a 1980s building without central air, that needs more and more repairs each year, the rent's gone from $450 in 2014 to $880 this year. This is _not_ a building appreciating in value lol so I don't get it. All I know is we don't have enough affordable housing.
I was shocked to learn our median income is $141,000 here. We have a huge upper middle and rich class, a large lower-class and poor population and then a sliver of a middle class. I don't see how this is sustainable, especially as climate change worsens weather patterns. More and more people move here because it's mostly pleasant for now. But as weather patterns change, as our summers get hotter and our winters have less snowfall, the wildfires will just get worse. Those same rich people and industries that moved here because it's nice are just gonna move somewhere else. The same cycle will repeat in another town, they'll have their city transformed...and those that can't afford climate migration will be left with their remnants.

It’s because the state went Blue. Let’s cut the BS. The year this state went blue and local politics started to switch, the state and the cities all went to shit. Cost of living sky rocketed, rent through the roof, taxes shot through the roof, utilities quadrupled in less than 2 years, crime rate his gone up, combined with the cold and non plowed roads during the winter, unless you’re a native and genuine just love the state, why stay? There’s no incentive other than…..yeah can’t think of anything.

Castle Rock is a better option. You will hate CS (excluding the Broadmoor area which is not in CS technically speaking) especially when you are the swatting target as your neighbors will have no problems fabricating incident reports against you and calling the police on you. Neighbors from hell, here it is.

Born and raised in Colorado Springs. Been here since 1964. Used to be a quiet sort of romantic city. I remember when everything shut down on Sundays. Nothing was ever open on Sundays. The world was quieter, people friendlier. Today is just madness, the growth in new communities spans what used to be rolling hills and pastures. The quietness is gone and everyone is trying to get somewhere at any cost. Crime is up, shootings is up, somehow in all this we lost our sense of humanity. Colorado was predominantly Republican. Under Obama the State sadly turned blue in 2008 and nothing has been the same since. Now if your coming to Colorado, be prepared to be a second class citizen as migrants get 1st priority over you. If they come to take your property or home, know that the Government refuses to do anything. That's why people are leaving. Those that fled California came here and voted for the same type of Gov they fled and here we are living in a city that I don't recognize anymore.

It sounds like you've put a lot of thought into your decision. The Springs has changed a lot over the years, and it's always tough to see a place you love become different.

It isn't because Colorado became more Blue in its politics. If anything it is a good thing then we don't have to deal with the MAGA idiots (except Boebert, and she's gone come November). We have enough fun dealing with all the Evangelicals in Colorado Springs. That all started in the late 90's when James Dobson and Focus on the Family came to the Springs. Ruined a great little military and liberal arts college (Colorado College) town.
Colorado has always been a Moderate state, a mix of Cosmopolitan and Rural Cowboy culture. I grew up in Colorado, my wife is a native of Colorado Springs, and what I've seen as far as changes over the last 50 years is crazy. We have always had issues with Water and infrastructure. There have always been issues with urban sprawl, even my home town (in NW Denver area) went from 35-40k people in 1987 to over 100k by 2000 because of companies coming to Colorado and people moving here for once was affordable houses (that all ended in 2010).
And yeah, the weather at times can suck. But the vast majority of the time it is pretty good. And what do you expect, we get the four seasons here, and you do eventually get used to the altitude. Plus, it is a dry climate here. Once you get west of the Mississippi the humidity drops hard.
Finally, yes Colorado has lost some of its glamour for a place to live due to multiple reasons. Overall though it is still a good place live and raise a family.

I grew up in the terrible state of Illinois! I retired from the military in Colorado Springs! I loved Colorado Springs for many years. And then things changed! For some reason this city voted in a pos democratic mayor. Now we are turning into a terrible city like Denver. I have lived this city for over 30 years. Now I am trying to find a safe place to live without all the sanctuary city crap that I tried to escape in Illinois. Hope this helps anyone looking to find a peaceful place to live! God bless America! Lord knows we need it right now! Maga!
