    LEADIN:
While some look for glitzy venues, expensive catering and designer outfits for their weddings, couples in one part of Ukraine do things a bit differently.
Their nuptials are steeped in tradition, involving rides on horseback, ribbon covered trees and traditional songs.
    STORYLINE:
Marichka Sandulyak is getting ready to be married.
It's a happy day, but there are plenty of tears. The bride is preparing to leave her parents to start a new life with her husband.
Marichka is a member of the Hutsul ethno-cultural group that inhabit western Ukraine.
Dressing for the wedding ceremony takes hours.
She wears a blouse with traditional embroidery which she made herself, along with traditional shoes, skirt and coat.
Guests are specially chosen to braid her hair.
Most important is the ornate headdress, a multicoloured arrangement with red ribbons, that's placed on her head after her hair is braided.
As she gets dressed, women perform a traditional song.
All Hutsul woman marry young. Marichka is 16.
Her Orthodox Christian wedding in the Carpathian village of Kosmach is celebrated as if it were taking place centuries ago.
After the church service, the wedding party returns to the bride's home.

I wonder if they still have arranged marriages. My grandparents were Ukrainians from galicia and they had an arranged marriage. They hated each other. Lol

Very strange. Despite the obvious outward and religious differences, some aspects reminded me of Indian weddings - especially the part where the bride was being dressed by her family with the female family members singing. That looked like the ‘doli’ ceremony that northern Indians have.
