I test drove one of these yesterday, the 3door '1'. The clutch and gearbox were smooth as silk (I thought I was going to stall it having been used to a 10 year old KA's clutch and gearbox but I didn't) the "Grabby" brakes came in very handy when I had to stop suddenly for an ambulance speeding around a round about. Have to say I felt extremely safe in this little car and am VERY excited to get my brand new one hot off the production line in September.
The hardest car I've ever driven out of a Mini Cooper, Renault Clio, Seat Leon, Ford Fiesta, Toyota Prius and a Ford Escort was a 2006 Citroen C1... I still have it and when you mentioned the jerky clutch I'm actually thrilled. The responsiveness is amazing! Which is the problem for some. You get use to it after many stalls.
Just bought my Picanto 1.2 about three weeks ago, and I love it. Sure, it's more expensive than the i10, but it looks a lot better and has plenty more amenities loaded in. And it looks really sexy in black.
Going from a 1999 Clio to a 2014 Picanto was a bit of a change - took me a while to get used to the clutch but now it's perfect. Seems faster as well which is odd considering I was driving a 1390cc Alize vs a 998cc VR7.
when he said that the clutch is jerky, it's the truth. It's soooo jerky, that I don't dare to stop completely so I can still go in the second gear because starting from a stand still in first gear nearly impossible. It's exactly like Mat said, it's just like an on/off switch. The brakes aren't that jerky, you just have to get use to it
The bird @ the KIA dealership, Jan 2016, Australia. I looked at a RIO. I said it's a bit big for me. Don't worry, she reassured me: "the PICUNTO is coming in April!" Ok, I said...
Extremely accurate review. I've had my picanto 2 1l for 6 months and pros and cons match exactly to the review. Only wish he had mentioned about how fantastic on mpg it is though as this was a major buying point for me :)
Roy Chung Chung If I drive sensible I can achieve 55mpg on my motorway commute and I get at least 45mpg in the city with stop start driving. This car does not have stop/start control but I find it does not need it anyway. It's extremely composed and comfortable on the motorway and once it gets to the speed, it cruises very comfortably for such a little engine.
ddrodwell1 Hello, when you said it cruises very comfortably for such a little engine, is it quiet when it is on the motorway of speeds such as 60 or 70 mph?
KrystekkCF yes it is very quiet. I now have a Vauxhall adam and that is quieter and has cruise control but the picanto exceeded my expectations and provided a ride comfort at high speeds that many saloon cars couldn't contend with :) Kia have managed to balance the revs well at 70mph so that it has just enough power to cruise, but low enough not to be loud at all.
ddrodwell1 Thanks for replying, i am 17 this year and when i will do my driving licence i am looking for a car that will be a reliable cheap to run and not expensive insurance. I am thinking about kia and toyota yaris (2006-2011) but then i don't want to spend more than £3,000 because as a first car i don't want an expensive car because u will not know how to use the gears, clutch or even throttle properly and it is pointless for me to buy a brand new £10,000 car.
I have to agree about the clutch and brakes, but the roadholding is ok on mine and so is the body roll. For a litre car I think the performance is great and no problem with overtakes either.
1. U dont put boots the the glove box. They go in the boot. 2. U dont put ur phone in the side of the door. U put that where the cup holders are. We live in a society, we're not animals.
Breaks and clutch feel weird or too sensitive because you're not used to driving the car!!! People who own it.. drive it for weeks/months are just fine...
Car reviewers are obsessed with 0-60 times. Does it really matter how long it takes to get to 60 in real world driving? Its not a race is it. As for problems overtaking, ive mentioned this before. You dont need to overtake anybody in most situations. For example, If you are behind someone who is doing 40 in a 50 zone, whats the problem in the grand scheme of things. You wont gain anything on your journey time if you did overtake. Secondly, on the motorway, plan ahead. If you are doing 70, use you observation skills to decide when to pull out and move back in again. If people cannot adapt their driving style in low power cars then they are bad drivers.
This is a nippy little car, you have to be able to drive to appreciate it's qualities. A nice rip noise from the engine when you work it too, very happy with mine, 60+ mpg. Great fun car.
Those door arm-rest bins are quite nice. It's little things like that that you can find even on the cheapest models from some companies. However even though my Golf has plenty of storage place dotted all over the cabin, it seems to come short compared to even small Kia and Hyundai cars.
We bought a Kia Picanto in Egypt 1.25 liter. We also bought the AT. I cannot see any problems with it and I don't understand the "clown" steering wheel part. To me, all the styling is very good.
I'll be getting a 2018 model, so HOPEfully the small problems have been fixed? Then again it's an auto too so I don't think the clutch willl be a problem!
I really like this car!! The new Kia Picanto is actually a really pretty car and would look really nice and not out of place driving around the trendiest parts of London!! Well Done Kia.
Looking to buy second hand automatic. Considering a 2011 picanto. Anyone tell me how it copes starting in the early morning freezes as that's a big deal for me
Mathuew, Hyundai / Kia design the brakes to be more sensitive because they see it as a Safety Precaution. Other wise if you have a dull braking system, If you need to Brake behind another vehicle you most likely will not stop in time and plow into the vehicle in front of you...
Yeah, if you want a car to use for a driving school you need an "old school" car that would resembla a tank. Say a VW Golf, or something similar. The Kia is good for drivers that will take care of it, we had a Sportage, it actually never broke and performed amazingly until we sold it...
The only thing that annoys me about this review is what is missing that is in Mat's other reviews. He doesn't talk about price and the standard equipment you get with them. I sincerely hope that his 'celebrity' doesn't cause him to make these reviews a novelty!
@ArtemiyPavlov I live in the US where half the cars he reviews aren't available, especially (and unfortunately) estate cars like the Skoda Superb and the BMW 3 series, Honda badged Acuras and the like. However, I still watch his reviews just 'cause he's such a good presenter. :)
LOL :D I like Top Gear, but they should do also this stuff, since they are good at it and that made me a bit sad, cause there was no other reviewer of their quality. But Mat, though is is barely two weeks I saw these videos, can even beat them. Great reviews
He didn’t show you the spare wheel (There isn’t one).. If you buy one from Wessex Garages beware of the £178.00 administration charge. Take care, Derek
MissEmmz Hmmm i run 140 km/h but a little noisy, its perfect as city car but not really to be in motorway , but still better than suzuki celerio or fiat 500 or any small car , my engine 1.25 L , i really love it easy to drive and roomy , i can say this is the best small and cheap car in the world
Good reviewer, although when he speaks he usually slows right down towards the end of a sentence and this just really bugs me for some reason. I find myself saying 'just get on with it man!' lol.
Who's seeing this 10 years later lol
9 years
I'm looking to buy it for my first car hahah
Mat from car wow dammm
Looking at 2013 for mum in law
Looking to get one :)
I test drove one of these yesterday, the 3door '1'. Viv Taylor my step mum has that one! My point exactly! Clutch and brakes are fine!
@@sxmbrxxdy2001 exactly
I was not expecting to enjoy this video as much as I did...
Had a kia from 2005. Fantastic car never had anything go wrong with it. Looks I’ll be test driving one of these thanks for the review.
Just bought my Picanto 1.2 about three weeks ago, and I love it. Sure, it's more expensive than the i10, but it looks a lot better and has plenty more amenities loaded in. And it looks really sexy in black.
The happiest review on the net ! Love this guy !
Are you kidding me... that steering wheel is beautiful, even Mercedes Benz stole the idea on the S class
agreed!! it may be the reason i want this car hahah
I don't care which car Mat reviews, I will watch it just because I love how he does it!
Going from a 1999 Clio to a 2014 Picanto was a bit of a change - took me a while to get used to the clutch but now it's perfect. Seems faster as well which is odd considering I was driving a 1390cc Alize vs a 998cc VR7.
Well matt changed a lot over the years , now he has a Merc G class as a daily hahaha
when he said that the clutch is jerky, it's the truth. It's soooo jerky, that I don't dare to stop completely so I can still go in the second gear because starting from a stand still in first gear nearly impossible. It's exactly like Mat said, it's just like an on/off switch. The brakes aren't that jerky, you just have to get use to it
1:35 hahaha even til this day, Mat always finds time for a 1.5l water bottle check
The best thing about these car review videos is how Mat's height ranges between 5"10 - i think he's even said he's 6 foot once. He is a shapeshifter
The bird @ the KIA dealership, Jan 2016, Australia. I looked at a RIO. I said it's a bit big for me. Don't worry, she reassured me: "the PICUNTO is coming in April!" Ok, I said...

Hello. I'm Matt Watson and you watching CarWow
I have to agree about the clutch and brakes, but the roadholding is ok on mine and so is the body roll. For a litre car I think the performance is great and no problem with overtakes either.
5 foot 10 and a HALF! simply brilliant Mat!! love your sense of humour and needless to say the reviews too.
1. U dont put boots the the glove box. They go in the boot.
2. U dont put ur phone in the side of the door. U put that where the cup holders are.
We live in a society, we're not animals.
THAT'S THE JOKE!
Breaks and clutch feel weird or too sensitive because you're not used to driving the car!!! People who own it.. drive it for weeks/months are just fine...
i own one. brake wise you are right, clutch wise what the video says is true, i have the same issue with my 1.2
One of his funnier reviews of all time. There is no stopping this guy. Too much Red Bull?? Very well done, Mat.
Lol, Mat’s beginnings. Awesome !
This is the exact video that made me buy a picanto. Im seeing this now in 2024 and i still have my picanto now 😂

Haggis Eater
Yeah its great car

My step mum owns the 2011 3dr picanto (base model “1”) and that’s fine to overtake! Easy peasy lol.
I was hoping you would touch on the design flaw with the timing chain in this video
We bought a Kia Picanto in Egypt 1.25 liter. We also bought the AT. I cannot see any problems with it and I don't understand the "clown" steering wheel part. To me, all the styling is very good.
Is This the 1.0 engine picanto? what if i brought a auto-transmission with 1.25 engine will the problem solve?
I'll be getting a 2018 model, so HOPEfully the small problems have been fixed? Then again it's an auto too so I don't think the clutch willl be a problem!
What fuel consumption you are getting?
OMG THE THOUGHTS i'm having now just watching him.
Wait what? If your a woman then yeah
Oliver Leonce well i do have a female genitalia so i guess I'm a woman :D x
Oh right that's good then lol
lol
Oliver Leonce vgcccff
quite spacious for a small car
nice review.
Could you do the the comparison test? I really want to see you doing it.
Do we get these in the states? Because I could've sworn that I saw one these a couple of months back.
It looks practical enough. But my biggest concern was where Mat said the brakes are a bit jerky.
They are very responsive but it's definitely not a negative about the car as they feel very reliable and comforting when seeking a safe car
You bet I'll be back for next video, you are doing great Mat, amazing :))
This one or the spark?
Steering wheel? rake and reach adjustment? or did i miss it?
I really like this car!! The new Kia Picanto is actually a really pretty car and would look really nice and not out of place driving around the trendiest parts of London!! Well Done Kia.
Should be buy or not i am very confused
I bought the Picanto in this exact shade of blue because of this video. And I love it!
Too bad I needed a bigger car. Otherwise I'd keep it.
tiadaid how do you find bill starts? I’m struggling with the clutch right now
He is doing those fast reviews very well. +

Half of the cars you review are not in America. That being said, I don't care. These reviews are the best! :D
You do great reviews! Btw, nice watch!
The only thing that annoys me about this review is what is missing that is in Mat's other reviews. He doesn't talk about price and the standard equipment you get with them. I sincerely hope that his 'celebrity' doesn't cause him to make these reviews a novelty!

Best reviewer. No doubt. Should be a part time comedian as well. Clever.
i watched 3 minutes of the video and i just realized this is not carwow
I like his review

RL R its best small car , i have one and it is great city car .
I have no problems with the brakes or the clutch at all.
LOL :D I like Top Gear, but they should do also this stuff, since they are good at it and that made me a bit sad, cause there was no other reviewer of their quality. But Mat, though is is barely two weeks I saw these videos, can even beat them. Great reviews
2:59-3:29 is the most humorous part in this review =p
"the grin on the steering wheel, qt a bit of a body roll....woahhhwooo~~" lol

Amazing review.

Christina Dames it's not sold here!
I actually like this new Kia. Would have it if I was in the market for it
It´s true! After Top Gear, I´ve been enjoying this guy´s videos a lot! :)
He didn’t show you the spare wheel (There isn’t one)..
If you buy one from Wessex Garages beware of the £178.00 administration charge.
Take care,
Derek
This video is from 2011 and he shows a kia picato 2014???????

Hmmm i run 140 km/h but a little noisy, its perfect as city car but not really to be in motorway , but still better than suzuki celerio or fiat 500 or any small car , my engine 1.25 L , i really love it easy to drive and roomy , i can say this is the best small and cheap car in the world
I just bought this as my first car
i have the 1.25L>> it is a great car but for the gas it's take 1 galon for each 50 km not so good for small car..
cant wait for it,city drive seems awesome
Smoke coming from the exhaust

And you also get used to the brakes after a while.

3:05
God damn it. Matthew! I will never be able to look at the steering wheel again. Now I have to bye a hyundai i10, or a Kia Rio. -,-
Knee room isn’t bad, really. Neither is headroom, and I’m 5 foot 10. And a half!
...Matlab, Yooka?
This is the first time I'm seeing young matt watson
Not changed much in 2023. Only 5 seats in the top of the range now🤔☹️
Our country is so backward, in Pakistan Kia is launching this exact shape as 2019 model 😣
Yes it's a 7 years old video😔😔😔
Really? Why is that? They shouldn't market it as a 2019 model, but on the bright side, at least you have a good Kia Picanto Model available
KIA! Bring this car to Canada!
Take back Justin Bieber and we'll consider it.
+Tom Ripley rofl hahahaha
gonna be my first car
love this car

"i will stop lock, it's scaring me" LOL
Good reviewer, although when he speaks he usually slows right down towards the end of a sentence and this just really bugs me for some reason. I find myself saying 'just get on with it man!' lol.
Lowl he said he was 5'11" on the other video!
You should host top gear
Matty dearest, I'll give you a place to store your cakes any day *wink *wink
Lol
😂😂😂😂
(personal use Sportage, not a driving school)
yeah i agree it is
2006 Kia Picanto got rusted busted and 1.1 motor smells like regular and growls like a Datsun.
Sold me on the cakes , so I’m going to buy one
Great car great review
If you like good speakers don’t get the picanto. They are absolutely sub par
