I remember this OP.. In a much more recent story, the mom tried to force OP to give his house (the now-deceased father's house) to his then-pregnant sister and he said no and then Mom went apeshit and ended up smacking OP, and that's just the start. That story is linked in the description. The mother is an absolutely disgusting, god-awful human being that never did learn her lesson, even after the Father left her, the OP more or less disowned her (eventually) and she was arrested for vandalism. Sister finally turned out alright though.

That mother is batshit crazy, and I'm really not that surprised because of the story that you read before, I just don't understand how people can be so narcissistic and then no one calls them out for it. It just fathoms my mind that this woman was able to get married and have kids and be able to keep this toxic environment going for years. The first sign that someone is crazy and they won't fix it is the red flag you see that tells you to go away this person isn't worthy of you. The story also shows why the sister was such a brat in the later story, because her mother spoiled her and her dad did not do anything to discipline her. She could have hidden it until getting pregnant and then pushed the issue. It was and is still rather common for marriages to happen because of it, and judging by the other story, the marriage would have been in, at least, the early 90s judging by the lifestyle the OP has in the other story, perhaps earlier than that. (I'm placing him around 30 or so...don't know exactly, but being through his education and established enough in a job to get someone else a job easily tends to mean more than a few years there).
I'd assume that it really devolved once the sister was born, and the father realized the mother would, likely end up with custody and free reign of the OP if he tried to get out.

It will always disgust and confuse me whenever parents play favorites. Like they brought children into this world and decided for no reason what so ever that they'll love one child over the other and not only love that child more but actively sabotage the other one just so they can make the golden child's light shine brighter. Just disgusting behavior.
    ETA:
I will say this, while dad did push back and back up op in every turn, he still allowed his wife to abuse op like this for years. That is not okay he should have divorced her and take him away from this grossly dysfunctional situation. And the deadbolt incident where dad punished op for the mom's stupidity? This is the move of narcissists. It’s called triangulation. They basically spoil one child and neglect the other to make it where one kid will love her no matter what, and the other go leaps and bounds for their approval. It’s also a great tactic to prevent the siblings from having a bond that could go against the mother in order to keep power in the household.

The dad probably knew the mom would be favored for custody, so until OP was old enough to decide which parent he wanted to stay with, he didn't dare divorce her. If she had *any* custody, OP would have to stay at her house *without his dad to protect him.* As for punishing him for his mom's stupidity, no. He was punished for goading her on until she ran into his door. There's a significant difference.

Definitely want more. It makes my childhood feel less abnormal! Mum would take whatever from me either as a punishment or simply because she wanted it so I learned not to get attached to what I couldn't hold on to - that kind of colored my relationships in later life and probably is why I never had kids. She stopped hitting me at 11 when I picked myself up and told her to go ahead because I figured out that it only hurt because I cared and when I stopped caring, it stopped hurting. When I started earning my own money outside the home at 13, I saved like crazy and the first things I got were a tent, a rucksack and a sleeping bag. I moved out at 19, went low contact and ended up on another continent. She mellowed a bit later on but when I stayed for the last year of her life, things were still distant.

I'm not sure if i can judge the man like so, i got the sense from OP that a lot of this is somewhat typical either in the counrty or the area OP is from. OP never talked about the physical punisment being out of the norm, the only thing he really focussed on was the blatent favortism and the stealing. The fact that he would get punished with a belt and NO ONE seemed to step in (no family, no teachers, no neigbours, no friends, no autorities) makes me think that this is somewhat considdered the norm where OP and by exetention his dad grew up. To me it seems that the entire living envoirment is kinda bad and neither really knows different or better. OP also never complained his dad didn't leave sooner, it makes me think that this might be a pretty religous area and that divorce under different circustances would not have been socially accepted (maybe even could have cost his dad his job & any future employment) it may also not even have been a valid legal reason in the country OP is from. Without more information/better context i cannot judge a person to be vile when i'm not privy to the infromation nessesary. This man might have just been doing the best he could in the situation he was in.

@@noirking6138 but that makes no sense and can’t be his motive, he was “staying for the kids” while one of the kids was threatened with physical violence every time he did something the mother disliked, the father was totally okay with this ... yet infidelity was his breaking point? I could be absolutely wrong, but i think it was mentioned at some point dad was catholic or at least christian. He mostly tried to make things right for both there kids but nothing came of up so he given up on that approach. Now he just acts like a counter to the mother which is understandable. He mostly though about divorcing the mother but probably that FamilyCourt is horrifically bias towards mothers and would mostly likely lose and OP’s life who have been true hell of that happened.
