You're absolutely right. I loved Iron maiden and thus song. As a kid it was an introduction to who Alexander the great was. It explains about 2% of the full story about Alexander. Back then there was no internet or home computers. I remember being in the library at school looking for books on anything I could about his life. Now I'm an expert on ancient Greece and Alexander the great. Thanks to this song which started the spark.
I gave my son the middle name Alexander, because of this song. True story.

What an amazing song!! Every time I listen to this song(probably 500 times over the years), I think that it's absolutely criminal that they've never played this song live. One of the very best. Love the reaction my man! Great job!
According to Nicko, they tried it years ago apparently after rehearsing it and they couldn't get it right, it didn't work. Its a complicated song to perform live, the timings and all the intricasies of the song - i presume to the standard they want....which is the level of the studio version or better.

I personally scored some great grades back in the 80s in ancient history class , quoting almost word , Iron maiden songs . I always loved history , but I loved Maiden more .Most ppl back then were completely scared by the imagary etc , But it drew a lot of us in and we learnt a lot . As well as listening to some fkn great , intelligent songwriting

Maiden has a decent number of songs about history: Alexander, The Trooper, Paschendale, Where Eagles Dare, Aces High, and others. They also have songs about literature, like To Tame a Land, which is about Dune.

Iron Maiden was such a huge part of my interest in history when I was a kid. Granted a lot of their stuff is more recent history which is pretty far out of my wheelhouse, but when they delved into ancient history, they always knocked it out of the park. If it weren't for Alexander, our current world would look very different, and certainly not for the better.
