A messy home looks cheap. Not the daily mess if a family but clutter, dust, and filth are definitely making a home look cheap. A good clean can make a lot of difference.
Dirty windows always look cheap to me.
Dirty dining room or kitchen table.
So true! Even a very humble home can be so inviting if really clean!!
Come clean for me please! 😊
@@komorebi3055 live closer and I’d work with you to make your home clean and cixy
One thing I love about your channel is your emphasis on practicality, especially for older people. My mom is renovating a lot of her house, and she's not old, but she's 50 and she doesn't plan to move ever again. So I've been trying to encourage her to make changes that still make sense for her in 20 and 30 years.
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoy, and great points!😊😊😊
You can actually get really nice bamboo flooring for less than vinyl. It’s sustainable, lovely, and feels good under your feet. What looks cheap to me is generic art, or no art at all. Your home should be filled with things that are meaningful to you and bring you joy when you look at them.
Very true, a home should have things that are meaningful to the people who live there, and filled with joy!
Another great video! A thing that bothers me/makes a space feel cheap is when people don't remove labels/stickers/tags from items-- like warning cards on window treatments or the content verification tag from pillows or sofas, etc. Edit to add-- as always thank you for sharing Albert with us.
Thanks so much, and thank you for sharing Shelley! Please take a moment to support the channel if you haven’t already, and join our very valued subscriber family. 😊😊😊
“ I’m immediately thinking, something’s happened here, someone’s been murdered…”. Oh Garrett, you make my day. Not only are your points on home design right on, but you are lovely and funny. Not to mention your darling Albert 🥰
Glad you enjoyed!🐶🐶🐶
Albert is by far the star of the show. He is adorable 😍 ❤️ 💕 💖.
I love the fact that you address the senior population and the tripping hazards. Your dog is absolutely adorable and you are such a good dog daddy. ❤
My pleasure! Glad you are enjoying. 😊
One thing I dislike which must surely come under the heading of ‘once trendy but now dated’ are scatter cushions which have been karate chopped!
I still like that. In many sizes and textures. It suggests comfort to me :)
Yeah! The karate-chopped pillows always looked deliberately pretentious and fake to me and, I mean, why would they even have that stupid dent in the top, anyway?
"The bedbug infestation is not one for me😏..." I am here for the subtle shade. 🤣😂
I've been buying furniture for my new apartment and I've found it difficult to find pieces that are neither "fast fashion" nor extremely expensive. Looking online, I have learnt that my taste is better than my budget 😉
With you on this one. It's a curse, isn't it!
If you have the option, I'd recommend looking at thrift/charity stores, Facebook marketplace etc. It takes a lot more effort and you do have to keep checking and be prepared to wait, but I've got some great pieces this way.
If you're willing and able to do a little repair, touching up or reupholstery, you can sometimes save even more. I think there's something really satisfying about bringing new life to a tired or neglected piece, although I know not everyone has the time or means to do this.
@@Timmakesmusic Thank you. I'm terrible at manual work, which is ironic because my father was an upholsterer, a real craftsman: curtains, chairs, sofas, even walls. He was really good but had to retire because people didn't wnat to pay to have a fair price for his job. Anyway, I'll try to follow your advice. 😊
So true! I did not realize how much basic furniture could cost! I’ve had pretty good luck at garage sales, FB Marketplace and estate sales! The estate sales (ones run by companies) usually are higher price than garage sales, but can have better quality stuff. Some estate liquidation companies even do half on the last day of the sale!
@@Timmakesmusic this. The markup on furniture is horrendous, I have never bought new/paid retail for anything but a mattress, and never will.
So grateful for your help Garrett! My home is finally complete and IS THE TALK OF THE FAMILY! Everyone that comes in literally GASPS! Now I’m taking ALL the things you’ve taught me to my sister’s new home! We are more than grateful! Thanks! “because FRIENDS help FRIENDS!” 😅
Congrats Erica! You are so welcome! I'm so glad to be of help. :)
Love the tag line!😄
You know we want to see pictures, right?
I’m waiting for my 10+ year old matching bedroom set to fall apart so I can justify replacing it with something a little nicer, but so far it’s proven just too sturdy 😂
Try replacing your least favorite piece with something else. And moving the old piece into another room. Or sell to offset the cost of the new/thrifted piece.
It’s good what you say about plants. I live in the least sophisticated kind of place, and I live in the woods. There’s nothing like having trees outside of every window. And I don’t do much maintenance of trees because this is Appalachia. Just keeping the outdoors outdoors is about all I can do.
People should not beat themselves up about making design mistakes because that’s how you learn & your taste does evolve over time. Thank you, Garrett, for these tips they are really helpful.
To add to your bit about rugs, I also think inexpensive newly made rugs make your house look cheap. I am not saying that everyone needs antique Persian rugs but estate sales and auctions are filled with rugs that were handmade before WWII that don't sell for any more than buying a new rug at Pottery Barn or West Elm but will be of much better value and have much better durability.
Your love and care for sweet Albert brings me to tears. Bless you forever for your kindness and compassion.
Wow, thank you! It's our great pleasure and honor to have Albert as part of the family. Thanks for watching, and please take a moment to support the channel if you haven't already, and join our very valued subscriber family.
Shag carpets looked awful when they first became fashionable in the 70s. They were impossible to keep clean. A friend would give her dog treats on a shag rug. The rug would have crumbs in it. Then you would step on something hard. She would actually use a garden rake to try and get crumbs out before she vacuumed the rug. I loved seeing Albert. He always looks so adorable. Great video Garrett.
Thanks so much Diane! It’s great that you enjoyed. 🤗🤗🤗
I’ve had shag rugs in the past, and they looked good for two seconds, then they lost their fluffiness. I’ve recently started incorporating real plants in my decor, and they look great and aren’t too bad to take care of. I also like dried florals instead of faux. I found a local place in my town that sells some really interesting ones.
I can’t tell you how much I agree with you about cables and wires not showing! ❤️ I am a bit manic about hiding them, to the point where my friends laugh at me because if they have to find the source of the outlet or the switch for a lot of my things they have to ask me where the heck they are because they’re so well hidden! :D
One thing that drives me insane is when pictures/art are hung basically right below the ceiling. Not talking about a massive nearly floor to ceiling piece but the something like an 8*11inch frame. Don’t make us get our binoculars please! 😂
Using favorite collectibles, such as Star Wars memorabilia, cosplay swords, shot glass collections, etc, for decor in the main living spaces looks cheap. Hide that s**t in a game room or something. Also, 1980s Victorian floral fabrics looks cheap IMO.
It just maybe the occupants favorite items. To them it may not be cheap.
Love the clean, chique background!
I think my pet peeve is too short, wrinkly, polyester-shiny curtains. Totally ok if it's a placeholder when you just moved, but there are so many nicer options.
Agreed! Those curtains are not cute.
I looked into vinyl plank flooring for my bathroom redo, that looked like wood or tile. I finally decided it wasn't for me, and instead got real porcelain tile and I'm happy with the choice. The price of real vs. vinyl wasn't much different, but the installation of course is more for the porcelain.
Can’t agree more about the area rug on top of wall to wall. Carpet isn’t for everyone, but I love my bedroom and living room carpet and putting my feet down on something cozy. Im not about covering it up with yet another piece of (cheaper) carpet.
I agree with everything you said! Something that makes a home look cheap to me is dirty, Dusty windows! Who wants to look out of a filthy window? You can have the most beautiful Decor but if the windows are dirty with cobwebs or whatever. It just downgrades everything around it. I live in the country on a ranch so I'm speaking from experience clean windows make a difference 😆
I have been laughing about "they can go to a hotel and I love that for them" for about 24 hours now.
Wow! That's great. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Please take a moment to support the channel, and join our very valued subscriber family. We always have fun on our channel! :)
Loved the “ no-guest” idea! 😝
It works great, but be prepared for pushback, "What do you mean, I can't stay with you? I know you have a spare bedroom..." The trick is not to explain or offer reasons; just repeat like a broken record, "Sorry, I'm not able to accommodate you. There's a hotel nearby that has rooms for $(rate) per night."
What kind of hosts are you?
@@rubyoro0 I'm a great host if *I* extend the invitation; I'll make sure the guest bathroom has the full complement of toiletries and your favorite snacks are in the pantry/fridge. But when people announce they're coming to town and demand I put them up, well, that's a whole different ballgame. My house, my rules.
I agree with you about futon sofas. In Japan, the futon is solely for sleeping and they generally get rolled up and stowed in dedicated bedding closets. During the day, the futon is not seen. 😁👍
Lol, “ Let them go to a hotel.” Love that for YOU❤️ I live at the beach, so I’m practically a free hotel😂
Your love has lengthen his life. He has no reason to leave. 💖🥰
We love Albert and his brothers so much. We do everything to make sure they are taken care of like royalty, and they get so much love from us, and they truly love each other. We were so proud of Linus and Cornealius when Albert joined the family. They took him into their little pack like they knew him from a puppy. They treat him with so much care, love and respect. They know he has a disability and is older so they are never rough with him, or expect him to play games he can't without sight. It is simply a joy to see them all together.
I'm a OCD minamalist so when I visit friends, family or neighbors, I cringe when I see..
Their refrigerator door covered with useless items, fake plants, cluttered kitchen counter, big clock on the wall, dusty windows and shoes all over the place. I have a NO shoe policy in my apartment so I keep a storage bin at the door.
Albert!!!!!! I love you more because how u rescue and care for Albert! I love Linus and Cornelius too
Thanks so much Jacqueline! It’s our honor to have him and his brothers. They are awesome and so loved.🐶🐶🐶
I know you and most of your subscribers probably already agree with this but no one's mentioned it in this comment section yet: those mass-produced signs with generic words like "gather" on them.
Albert is scrumptious! Good bless him! ❤️
Absolutely with you on the fake plants - just cant stand it… 😀 Understand not all have green fingers, but it’s also about choosing the right plants…
Thanks so much! Please take a moment to support the channel if you haven’t already, and join our very valued subscriber family.
😊😊😊
And cats… I don’t have plants because of my cat. And there are precious few sunny spots to put any, but mostly it’s the cat.
spider plants are good for cats and they’re easy to grow, easier to grow than weeds are and they’re pretty
MsLouis V, Thanks for your comment. Please take a moment to support the channel and join our very valued subscriber family. 😊😊😊
Thank you, Garrett! ALL great suggestions! . . especially calling out the issues with crazy wood-look vinyl flooring and rug-over-rug. The suggestion of bringing the color of the carpet into the room design color selections answered questions for me at a perfect time!
My pleasure!
The Albert visit made my day! You celebrate his long life with such love and reverence, as it should be.
Absolutely true! He’s doing great and gets state of the art veterinary care just like Linus and Cornealius. Please take a moment to support the channel if you haven’t already, and join our very valued subscriber family.

Albert is so precious. Enjoy every moment with him! I lost my baby to congestive heart failure in July. He was 14 and a half and I miss him everyday.
Seventeen years is such a blessing! ❤️
Thanks so much! He’s a great little boy. Very independent minded. He does things on his terms. That’s ok with us. We just give him tons of love and keep him safe. I’m so sorry to hear about your pup. It’s losing family. I’m sure he was very special. I’m glad you are part of the LeChic family. Our subscribers are the most important of the channel!🐶🐶🐶
It took me a while to decide on what luxury vinyl plank flooring I wanted. I love contrast and color and so I thought I wanted something with a lot of contrast and color in it. Thank God I changed my mind. What I picked actually looks like real honest to God would, there is a pattern so it's not just solid but it looks natural. Not nearly the contrast I thought I wanted but definitely turned out right.
Aaww, Albert is getting sweeter and sweeter 😍🐶🤗
*Introvert Laughing* . When you spoke about the guest room vibe, I had a fabulous belly laugh. Only one person ever stays in my guest room, she's not sleeping on futon. You're a gem in the YT design community.
So nice of you! Thanks.
I just love your little guy and you have great dedication and compassion for him.
Thanks so much! It is our honor and pleasure to have Albert and his two brothers as part of our family. They are loved beyond belief and cared for, and treated like princes.
Love your practical yet stylish (and hilarious) videos. I"d definitely recommend them to my friends. Thanks, Garrett!
Thanks so much for your support Bernadette! It means a great deal to me. :)
I hear about the crazy vinyl flooring. I theme homes for rent on Airbnb my first place is a Harry Potter theme and I purposely got the grey crazy floor for the majority of the home save Molly’s kitchen, the great hall and room of requirement went with different contrasting colors for that. Glad that my instinct was correct in those crazy grey stripy floors.
I’m so happy when you bring out Albert! ❤️
🐶🐶🐶
As (almost) always I totally agree, and especially on the floors. They can call it Luxury Vinyl all they want; it’s way overpriced IMO, and not for me. The same goes for laminate. Some natural woods are pretty busy too though. Acacia 😵💫
I agree with everything you said!
Great tips! I'm new to your channel and I'm currently binging on all your content. My heart melted when I saw your precious gorgeous pup, Albert. ❤

Albert is so lucky to be part of such a loving family! Thank you for loving him! Of course you're really the lucky one to have him part of your family.
Thanks so much! It’s our honor and pleasure to have him as part of the family.

"First thing I think is...someone got murdered here." 🤣🤣 I almost spit my coffee out. That is hilarious but true that we automatically wonder what that rug is hiding!
🤣🤣🤣
Spot on with the rug on carpet take. As a safety manager at a retail furniture showroom it is the number one accident issue. Rug tape can be your friend but then you have to deal with tape goo when you want to move it. Rugs are for floors not carpet. Thank you for this.
Love your pup! So sweet!! Thanks for the advice. I'm a complete decorating nerd so everything you said was interesting! ❤❤❤❤

Great advise- and very informative-love little Albert❤️

Thank you for the awesome content per usual. I can't stand word signs. It drives me nuts. There are better alternatives like make your own art or if you like words invest in some antique advertising signs. I'm not on a farm , everyone knows to eat since food is in a kitchen , and most people live with their family.( Either related or not.) It is overload and I hate it.
Love sweet little Albert, thanks for sharing him with us.
Our pleasure!
I m in love with Albert! And so cute how you show love to him. Sweet old good puppy
Thank you! 😊 He and his two brothers are great boys. :)
Finally sitting down and relaxing watching your video with a glass of wine, you make my Sunday evening perfect! Great tips and advice! 💕
Yay! Thank you!
Looking at you showing your love to your dog made my day! 😘🥰😍
Aww thanks Johanna! We love the pups so much. :)
Love the video, as per usual! I think one thing that can make a house look cheap is things that are in disrepair, or are damaged or worn out. Stained linens, broken blinds, frayed cushions, that sort of thing. I'm not saying go out and buy all-new stuff the moment something gets a tear in it, just that it might be worth taking the time to sew the hole back together or to get a stain professionally treated so it has a higher chance of coming out completely. And I say this as someone whose furniture is 99% secondhand and definitely all scuffed and stained and torn LOL
Thanks so much! Agreed Samma. 💯
Subscribed to your channel for months and enjoying every video that you make. Thank you for making life bit more glamorous ❤️

"When I walk into a home where there's a rug over carpet I instantly think there's been a murder..." I usually think that they've spilled a glass of red wine or they're covering a cigarette burn but you go straight to a serious crime being committed?? Absolutely hilarious, love it! 🤣🤣🤣❤
I’m always just waiting for a documentary about something to come out, I live for a true crime moment😂
Thank you for sharing little Albert too :)
I'm new to this channel. This is the first video I watched & it was very informative. I love that you got straight to the point & didn't spend 10 minutes introducing the video! Lol Garrett, hilarious! When people swan into your home like your from housekeeping at the Ritz ( all my fault). I am so happy to say, I don’t have a guest room anymore 💃 🪩 🕺! When people buy ornaments that you can tell they don’t love or have any real meaning to them. It’s just an accessory to shove in the room, and gather dust. You know like those wooden beads that aren’t cheap but look cheap because they’re pointless… Lol
I just subscribed! Love your personality and great info. ❤

Thanks so much! I would suggest checking different shops on Etsy.
The choice of wood tone in real wood (stain) or synthetic like vinyl in the middle of renovation overwhelmed me, luckily Garrett to the rescue, love your video, subscribe almost 1 year ago and this is my first comment in your video 😍

Hello beautiful LeChic Family❣️ Love the room with that sort of swirl chandelier, that room looks so beautifully put together. Oh, the futon! My son's roommate has one that he got from his grandparents. 🙄 Oh well, that's a discussion for another day. Just giggled over the area rug, pardon my sense of humor. Yes, it's a tripping hazard but the part where you say, "What are you hiding"? Too funny 🤣.
Until next time, hugs xx
I like your channel but honestly Albert sold me💕💕💕 I love him 💕💕💕
Aww thanks so much!🐶🐶🐶
I love the visual of you peeking under someone’s rug! 😂 You make my petty little heart smile! Thank you for all of your fantastic tips. Hugs to Albert. ❤️🐶

Omg and can I just say I love Albert! And the fact that you love him makes you an awesome and amazing person. Love, love love!!
Thank you. He actually passed away in November. He was 20. I did a video on it which you can find on our channel page. We love him so much, and miss him every day.
Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear this! But in the midst of such grief and emptiness that losing a beloved fur baby brings, I hope it gives you a little bit of peace and comfort to know that while he was yours, you filled his days with so much love and tenderness. And you gave him the best life any little doggy could ask for. I have no doubt that he felt loved and cared for and there isn't anything better than that. I lost my own fur babygirl going on two years now and I still miss her endlessly too. I know how hard it is to have to say goodbye to a pet that is loved so very much. People tell me she (her name was Lola) was lucky to have me as her momma but I think the opposite is true.
Just watched this video and decided to become a subscriber. How informative!
Welcome to the channel! It’s great to have you as part of our very valued subscriber family.

an area rug over carpet might be hiding some holes, that are more of a trip hazard than the rug itself (Been there, done that). Thanks for the Albert video bomb, he is so adorable, and it's clear that you love him to pieces :)
Agreed! Great point of course.
🐶🐶🐶
OMG, LOL! "Somebody was murdered here." I just love you, Garrett.
