    I'm 66. This made me appreciate your music even more, hearing about the process, your psychological struggles, compromises inherent in having neighbors so close for example, and of course the deeply personal and obviously difficult loss of your very supportive mother (lost mine in a similar way), all makes me even more grateful for the new material and proud of you and your journey. You've done well. Bless you brother. Welcome back.

      Thank you so kindly man! It was a difficult time for sure, but much as my mother would have wanted, it helped me grow in ways I didn't realize I needed. Both as a father and as a musician. Despite the darkness of that time, I feel a lot of gratitude. I now get to share the joy and the pain with this amazing community again, and it just never disappoints. It's good to be back!

    I am sorry for your loss. I lost my grandfather and grandmother 2 years ago. They passed away 11 days apart. It was sad but they both lived full lives, 97 and 98 years old. My grandpa passed away in his sleep at night. My dad said that is probably how he wanted to go. He was a very proud and strong man so he probably did not like looking frail and weak and did not want people around as he passed. My grandma LOVED family. She was surrounded by everyone. A room full of loved ones. My dad held his mom in his arms. I held her hand. Cousins holding her. My uncle played her favorite song as she was passing. I saw her eyes in that moment and she saw something. Could be her brain firing neurons but I think she saw something profound. My aunt said it was a beautiful death. I agree. I LOVE your music. I first found it on You Tube. It just popped up on the recommendations. The cover art looked so good I had to click on it and the second I heard the music, I knew the rest would be good. It was "Transience". The album cover is amazing. Anyway, I would listen to "Transience" on my drive to my grandma's because it takes the same amount of time to drive there to listen to the entire album. The last song I heard before she passed was "Life".

    First off, sorry to hear about your mom. But its incredible to hear how supportive she (both your parents actually) have been. Because truly this is something special. I have been playing guitar for most of my life but I cannot fathom playing all of the instruments, doing the vocals, and writing the lyrics. That in and of itself is an incredible achievement. But looking at the quality of this, it makes it all the more stunning. I hope you continue to create even after this conclusion to the suite of albums. Music is a unifying light in this world and we are very much in need of unifying lights right now, even if that light casts a bit of a shadow.
    Its funny that you mentioned about not liking being in front of the camera, because actually this is probably one of the better commentary playthroughs I have ever seen. You are engaging, thoughtful and very informative, I know its probably not the easiest thing for you, but I hope you put out some more of these.

    This song and the accompanying video are really fantastic, and it was awesome to get to hear some background information on it. It makes the song that much more meaningful! I'm very much looking forward to the full album release! Thank you so much for sharing your art with the world! 🤘

      Thank you, I was already hoping that this video might reach someone who had gone through, or was currently going throught the same thing. No matter what, sooner or later it will happen to all of us, and I found that no amount of pragmatism could take away the torrent of feelings that came with it. But yes, expressing the emotions like this helps tremendously. This project has always helped me heal through the depths of life. May it continue to do so for many more years, so I'll have something to share with you all!

    First off, sorry for your loss.
    Congratulations on finishing the album, I've been listening to Follow the River a lot on spottily, I'm so ready for more!
    Is this your first time doing vocals for your project? How was it doing all the music yourself? Did your past vocalists have a lot of input or has Shylmagoghnar mainly been a one man project? Also, the he outro riff is amazing, I wish it went on for 10 more minutes.

    • @Shylmagoghnar
      @Shylmagoghnar  8 місяців тому +3

      Thank you kindly.
      Good questions! I'll answer them here, but I'm also considering doing an Ask-Me-Anything video soon with questions from people on all platforms. If you're okay with it, I think these would be good to have in there, so let me know if that's alright with you! So answers:
      -It was not the first time doing vocals for me. On the song Emergence, all of the vocals and lyrics were mine. On the Transience album, I wrote and performed that intro bit of As All Must Come to Pass (time is a beast etc), and for Journey Through the Fog I wrote the lyrics and did most of the vocals. That one was a duet between Skirge and me, which we really enjoyed doing! My voice is usually a bit deeper/growlier and his more raspy and tight.
      -Doing all the music myself has always been the norm in Shylmagoghnar. For the debut album Emergence, Skirge added his track The Sun No Longer as an outro, but other than that, every single track and instrument you've heard on Emergence and Transience were just me.
      -Skirge's input on the music was mostly a "spiritual" one, for lack of better words. This project was spawned from our mutual love and obsession with music, so if we would get together, we would easily just talk about that kind of stuff for 12 hours straight. So I think it's fair to say that the music for this band was influenced by those long conversations. We agreed on what we liked and what we didn't like, and the project reflects those feelings. In a direct sense, our way of working was layered though. I would write a demo and record the instruments, and then I would send it to him. He would then write lyrics and record demo vocals, and generally that's how all songs came to be. Only very rarely did one of us have to adept something to the other person - we just clicked naturally.
      The one exception that comes to mind was during "No Child of Man Could Follow". The song was originally shorter, but it had always been centered around Skirge's lyrics, and we ran out of room to put 'm all in there! So in a very rare turn of events, I added another verse to the song to make way for his story.
      We've always maintained a rule for Shylmagoghnar: "The production tells you where it wants to go, so don't fight it but lean into it". To give an example of how serious we took that rule: "I Am the Abyss" used to have vocals... We completely deleted them, because the song straight up didn't seem to want them. Judging from the reactions that song is receiving to this day, I think we made the right call, painful as it was...
      -Haha yes, I am happy about that outro too! Classic reverse melody shenanigans, not the first time that works for the project :D I considered having it longer too - I think I mainly shortened it because it felt best this way when listening to the entire album. Many choices made in individual songs are adjusted to fit the songs around it, that's why Shylmagoghnar albums always feel like a journey.

    Hey Nimblkorg.
    I first discovered Shylmagoghnar a few years ago, in 2020 I believe, after a friend of mine sent me the youtube link for the full Emergence album. I can't put into words how much your music has helped me to push through during dark times, and I can say I found an actual haven in your songs, especially The Cosmic Tide and The Chosen Path. Your music has the power to help people find peace when everything around them is collapsing, and that's a gift you will for sure never lose. I can't thank you enough for what you've done.
    To talk about Convergence a bit, I was confused after my first hearing. It was for sure a beautiful song, but I couldn't find what I used to call the "Shylmagoghnar magic". The feeling of coming home when hitting the play button on your albums. Something was missing, felt different and I wasn't sure what it was. I was confused, and actually quite scared to your newest album wouldn't meet my hopes after a few years of eagerly wait. It turned out that I wasn't in the mental state at that time to truly listen to and embrace the music. I can finally say I ended up listening to Follow the river again and again and finding in the song what I was looking for from the very beginning.
    You said that your project was meant to be a trilogy, but I sure hope you will change your mind, or start a new project eventually. Your music is something special for me and for a lot of people, you sure have a lot to bring to the table for the years to come.
    Thank you again, and I can't wait for the full release of the album

      Great, I was hoping for that! After spending so much time with this stuff, everything just seems perfectly normal and logical to me, but I had to remind myself that that's probably not the case at all from the outside. The support and reactions that this project has been receiving over the years is really something, so I wanted to give something back by inviting people to take a look at the cogwheels on the inside haha. I'll probably continue with more videos of this format for upcoming music videos, and maybe even some more detailed stuff about how I do the studio work for these albums. It very much depends on how doable all of that is time wise, but it's something I've been considering for years. Who knows, it might light a spark for someone!

      So far the reactions have once again been heartwarming so I think I'll be doing more of this in the future! Two more music videos and an entire album still coming, so plenty of stuff to talk about I'd imagine :D The band name came from a collection of syllables that former vocalist Skirge and I came up with during our teenage years. We wanted to pick a word that described the feeling of the music we wanted to make, but existing words didn't really do much for us (or worse, were already taken!). So we created our own thing from sounds which held personal meaning to us. Much like a meditative chant. My mate chose Ma and Gogh and I chose Shyl and Nar. We then both agreed that it would be insane to take a band name like that. So that's exactly what we did ;) It means a different thing to either one of us, and we're keeping it a secret, cause we want people to have their own ideas about what it represents.

    I'm terribly sorry for the loss of your mother. That's tragic. I'm looking forward to the upcoming album! Honestly, the music video (and the lyrical themes) reminded me of DMT/the psychedelic experience (which seems to possibly shed insight into the "other side", and most importantly, comes with that sense of "ohh ya, this place... I've been here before"). Thank you greatly for explaining where all this came from for you!
    Damn, I really sympathize with your pain behind the drums. I have a herniation (L5-S1) as well, consisting of a complete annular tear, wherein the disc is impinging my sciatic nerve. It forced me to stop working. That's actually why I made the drum channel I did, however, I don't upload frequently for the very reason(s) you mentioned. Hopefully they found a treatment/work-around for you in your country. Just the fact you said "pain meds" makes me think you got treated well. Here, in America, I was pushed to the street and told "learn to live with it" (common practice here). I completely understand how it feels to not even be able to sit at the drum-kit, let alone to play high-tempo music. My hat is off to you sir! Thank you again!

      Thank you! Yes, I've recently had a conversation with a friend who has done a lot of experimenting with hallucinogens, and he also said that my experiences very closely resemble his. Especially that feeling you describe, I think that's the big kicker. Visuals are one thing, but the senses that come with it are very unique and vastly different from day to day life. As frightening as it can be, there is a strong sense of "ah yes, this explains everything". I guess I just get that ride for free - you just never know when it's going to leave :D
      Man, you know exactly the pain I'm talking about then! I had heard before how bad it can be, but I didn't expect it to be so everpresent? During the peak, I was just completely unable to think about anything else. It feels like you're living in a parallel dimension of your own, where it's just the pain and you. Truly horrible. And that was WITH the meds, so dear lord I cannot even imagine what you have to go through :( That is beyond a doubt inhumane. Coming from a background of healthcare myself, the mere thought of this sickens me. Hang in there brother!
      Yes by now I'm doing alright, though I'm still recovering from the weakened foot on drums. Probably won't be doing any demonstration videos for that anytime soon. The entire leg just feels different now. On some days it's fine and fast ankle motion is alright, but that whole fun zone between 150-180 is something I have to completely relearn from scratch. I'm forcing myself to play at least a little bit every single day now, and it's helping.

      That's good to know for future videos, and thank you for your personal reactions! I really appreciate it. Yes, this entire thing was unscripted and single take, as I wanted it to be real. When that part came up, I choked for a moment and afterwards I hesitated whether I should leave it in or not. But I've decided a couple of years ago that I want this project to be honest, even if that's sometimes difficult. I think we as people have taught ourselves to only show our hardened exteriors and hide our fears, because it seems to be expected of us in day to day life. I don't want to play that game anymore - I think it makes people ill and horribly lonesome. I cannot in good conscience perpetuate that.

      Yes, feel free to write like that, that's what we have the translate button for! :)
      Thank you, I very much appreciate your kind words. To answer your question: the inspiration for the project comes from several directions. There were some bands who inspired me early on, like Death, Immortal, Opeth, early Dimmu, a little bit of Satyricon. That sort of thing. But I think most of the inspiration comes from video game music. I was a big fan of the soundtracks that came with games on the Commodore 64 way back in the day, and the limitations to those chiptunes made some of those composers very creative. They did a lot with very little, and that's something I aspired to do as well. The soundtrack to the games Unreal, Blood and Diablo were also important to me for atmospheric reasons. Furthermore, there were artists like Kate Bush whom impressed me a lot when I was a child. Her music sounded dreamlike and frightening to me, and I couldn't stop listening to it. It is a very rare quality in music, which I'm also trying to capture for Shylmagoghnar. I hope that answers your question! \m/

      @@Shylmagoghnar спасибо за ответ 😉 Скажите, что для Вас музыка? • @Shylmagoghnar
      @Shylmagoghnar  8 місяців тому +1

      Oh yes that doesn't sound strange at all to me - as a matter of fact I recognize it from my own experience with it! To me, working on this music is therapeutic. Mental illness has been a big blockade in my life, and on many occasions it has made me wish that I had never been born. It's such an intangible enemy, yet it's always there. So I agree with the analogy of fighting the demon. This project is my sword against monsters. But not just my own. My hope and intent for it is to be a sword against the listener's monsters as well. So when you said that the music soothes you, that's the best thing you could be telling me. That's exactly what I want to achieve!

      Certainly okay to ask! Regrettably, he is not part of the project anymore because he had to take a step back from music after the release of the previous album. He emigrated in those days and building up his new life caused him such a burn-out that he felt completely robbed of any creative spark for years. He tried to work with me on the new album, but that only made it worse, so we decided to not force it.

       @Shylmagoghnar By change I mean that since the first album the music feels a bit different, like it has a hint of something more to it.
      But it is to be expected for your expression to grow with you.
      Some bands make the same music over again and again, some change completely, even jumping to anothert genre. For me there are few bands that I can *feel* their music, and Shylmagoghnar is one of them. The music *feels* like it has a soul, much like Terry Pratchett's book Soul Music. But that may just be me.
      Whichever the case is I have been growing with your music as well and greatly appreciate it from where it started to where it is now. And it's wonderful to see the creative process and the intent behind it, as I am sure may other people would agree.

    • @Shylmagoghnar
      @Shylmagoghnar  8 місяців тому +1

      You know, I'm not sure either, because it mostly found its way into the album artstyle because of the dreams which inspired the songs. Within those dreams, the eye often stood for a gateway between existence/non-existence, but in the usual dreamlogic way that is hard to reconstruct when awake. Same goes for the self-consuming snake on the album cover. That is of course an ancient symbol, but I didn't use it for that reason.
