All Dogs Go to Heaven is an underrated films. It isn’t perfect (tonal shifts, middling second act), but I feel this maturely tackles adult issues and gives us a protagonist who is morally gray. I'm so glad you're finally doing All Dogs Go to Heaven and you're really giving it a critical look because you don't have nostalgia for it. I always felt that this film had a pretty weak plot, but could never really put my finger on why I felt that way. You breaking it down that there appears to be two separate (major) plots going on in the film absolutely makes sense to me as to why that might be since they rob the story telling power of each other. Hypothetically, they could have even been two separate movies with some rewrites - maybe focus the first film entirely on Charle/Carface but Anne Marie is a minor player in that drama and then the sequel could be all about Anne Marie trying to find a home and Charlie trying to prevent that from happening (Think the "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" sequence from the Lion King 1 1/2, but on a less chaotic and comical scale). I may or may not be in the minority as it feels like I can never find anyone else who has seen it, but I really enjoyed All Dogs Go to Heaven 2 a lot more. I was wondering if that might be a future review later down the line? I feel that the plot is a bit stronger (if still completely inexplicable at points) and the characters are better fleshed out. Also, RIP Teddy

First part of film: Charlie plans to get revenge on carface Second part of film (according to Steve): Charlie seems to forget his plot to get revenge. Me: at least this shows that Charlie isn’t a character who’s driven by revenge (if I’m right)
It's such a shame that Don Bluth had an original cut, which had it's darker moments and maybe more character development. I'm not sure if it would explain the tonal shifts, but I digress. So if I was making the movie, I keep it like this: The 1st act will stay, as well as the half of the 2nd act, where Charlie and Itchy "rescue" Anne-Marie when they learn what Carface is using her for, Carface realizing Anne-Marie's gone and the whole bedtime sequence. Now for the next part of the act, here's what should change: creating Charlie's revenge. Charlie's plan for revenge is to blow the casino boat, and have Carface watch everything he built be destroyed, and have him get killed in the explosion (Charlie: He's gonna watch as everything he's got now disappears. Then its his turn.). Once they do, Charlie has a getaway plan as well (which I explain more in detail soon), and him and Itchy will make their escape. However, Charlie needs money in order to get the ammo and explosives he needs to blow up the boat and for their ride out of New Orleans. So that's when he decides to use Anne Marie so they can have her talk to animals and place bets on the winners. And with their money, they buy their ammo, and secretly stick them onto the boat so when the time is right, they blow it up. But during one of their bets, a dog who happens to work for Carface, notices Charlie in the audience and goes to tell Carface (And we can have that scene where Carface attempts to murder Killer and Killer states he has a gun; but not a "ray gun.). We can still keep the "Anne-Marie looking for a family" subplot, but here's what'll happen: during their planning Anne-Marie wants out because of Charlie not keeping the end of his promise to help the poor and find her a family. So that's when they go to the abandoned church where Flo raises the orphaned puppies and feed them. Here we get more development with Flo where not only is she a former girlfriend of Charlie, but has some business in laundering money and goods and smuggling pets out of the town. Charlie makes a deal with her into helping him and Itchy get on a plane out of the city, but doesn't mention his plans for revenge on Carface to her. We keep the sequence of Anne-Marie finding the stolen wallet of Harold and Kate, the "Soon You'll Come Home" song, Charlie's Hell nightmare (fully restored), Anne-Marie's visit to Kate and Harold, Charlie manipulating Anne-Marie into coming back with him, the Carface shooting (fully restored; if you pay careful at it was meant to be more violent), and here we see more elements to the watch where it basically shows that it gives Charlie immorality and healing powers, unless something happens to the watch (like it stops ticking). We have the whole scene with Charlie and Anne-Marie falling into the water in that abandoned building, but remove the entire alligator sequence (Seriously, why was that even in there?). Instead, we have them falling through the sewers trying to find their way out, only to head down a waterfall, leading to Anne-Marie contracting pneumonia. Itchy in the meantime is walking down the street with some more supplies for the revenge plan, only to get attacked by Carface and his thugs but manages to escape despite receiving some bruises. We have Charlie trying to find medical attention for Anne-Marie with Flo and Itchy confronting Charlie there, Charlie in anger states that he's using Anne-Marie and plans "dump her in an orphanage", Ann-Marie hearing everything and running away tearfully, and here we are shown that Carface managed to follow Itchy to the abandoned church, where him and his thugs hide from behind and kidnap Anne-Marie, and Itchy realizes that it's them, not Charlie. Charlie then decides that's he has to for once try and fight for someone other than himself and goes to save Anne-Marie, even convincing Itchy into doing so (Since Itchy states earlier that he believes Charlie treats Anne-Marie like she matters more than him.). Charlie and Itchy then go on their rescue with Charlie attempting to get Anne-Marie out, but is confronted by Carface once more and a fight ensues but accidently causes a fire and Charlies realizing the explosives are still on the boat has to get Anne-Marie out fast. Carface's death can be the same, except instead of the comedic alligator, Carface is confront by real scary and well drawn ones (Kinda similar to the designs of the T-Rex, in Bluth's previous film The Land Before Time.). Charlie ending up sacrificing his watch to save Anne-Marie, and dying in the explosion (Also, remove Killer helping Anne-Marie to shore and have him get his comeuppance as well, since we are shown in the film that he's still evil, so him saving her feels unearned.). And then we have the emotional ending where Itchy, decides to stay with Anne-Marie, as it would be what Charlie wanted, Charlie being forgiven, and given the chance back to Heaven, his final goodbye to Anne-Marie and returning to Heaven. And just like that, you have the perfect All Dogs Go To Heaven movie.
I remember seeing this movie on TV once as a kid. I didn't get much of the plot, but the action scenes were both intense and cool. From watching this review, it has a rather interesting idea of mixing Prohibition- era mafia wars with the afterlife. I'm actually surprised this movie didn't do well at the box office at time, but it did earn a cult following.
Itchy was always nice to Ann. He didn't agree with Charlies plan and was a voice of reason. He generally wanted her to get a family. He broke down about getting rid of her because he was telling Charlie it was wrong to keep her with them and he wanted her to get a family because he actually cared about her the whole time, unlike charlie. For fucks sake the only ones who suffered because of Charlies actions were Itchy and Ann. Itchy was beat up by Carface's minions and almost died and thats why he broke down in front of Charlie, not because he didnt like her but because he was done suffering because of Charlies selfish actions but still considered him a friend
@@ChelseatheCreativeFox-pc2xz And he made Charlie mad too yet everyone misphrased what he was saying he didn't even mean it when you're mad you say things you don't mean. And Anne Marie misunderstood it since she's a little kid and didn't know.
I grew up with 2 dog and when I was little (around 6) one of them passed away and my parents got me and my sister this movie to help us and it actually made me feel a lot better it made me sad but it helped me cope with the loss of my dog. This movie will always hold a special place in my heart

I feel like in the 2nd movie they were going to put Annmarie again but the voice of Annmarie had passed with her mother and father from a double murder/suicide rip Judith Barsi 💔🕊👼
The idea of the plot is at first he's glad he can take revegen but then realizes he can live forever and plans to make the most of it. When you find out your immortal and can choose to die when you please. Getting revegen on the person who gave you such a gift is the last thing on your mind
All dogs go to Heaven is one of my favorite films is it perfect? No but looking back on it it’s a beautiful film with beautiful animation and a great story

Also,
RIP Teddy
You can watch All Dogs Go To Heaven for free on UA-cam right now; I watched it for the first time in like 20 years; thanks for reviewing it, Steve
(Nice sponsorship btw)
RIP Teddy
I had this movie on a VHS Tape when I was like 5. I loved it so much and always got very emotional. At some point my family started calling me Sharly (as in short for Shannon) because of it....good times💕
My dog Bella passed the day before this video came out, after watching this review I found my VHS of the film to watch and bawled cos I kept thinking of Bella, I really feel for you man, may teddy rest in peace
This was one of my absolute favorite movies growing up. I honestly just haven't been able to bring myself to watch it after my dog Champion died almost a year ago so this review is somehow a big step for me. I'm sorry about your pooch, it's always difficult to loose someone but it does get better.
R.I.P
Teddy
Gone, but not forgotten
:(
He's not gone, he's in Heaven
All dogs go to heaven was my favorite movie as a child, Charlie leaving the little girl always gets me teary
This film honestly kills me every time cause my dog was called Charlie n this film reminds me with him every time
But I love your reviews
My dog passed away this summer as well. He was my best friend since I was 8 years old. It's the hardest thing that a pet owner will ever go through. My heart goes out to you and Teddy, what you're going through isn't easy.
For an extremely popular and well-beloved animation it's hard to believe it didn't do well in the box office and it's harsh critics didn't know what they were talking about because this film was awesome &still is. Quick shout-out to secret of nym that film is also class gold!💖
An American Tail is the best Don Bluth film in my opinion.
First part of film: Charlie plans to get revenge on carface
Second part of film (according to Steve): Charlie seems to forget his plot to get revenge.
Me: at least this shows that Charlie isn’t a character who’s driven by revenge (if I’m right)
i understood it like this, he didn't want revenge at the second part because he didn't care about it once he had wealth
It's such a shame that Don Bluth had an original cut, which had it's darker moments and maybe more character development. I'm not sure if it would explain the tonal shifts, but I digress. So if I was making the movie, I keep it like this:
The 1st act will stay, as well as the half of the 2nd act, where Charlie and Itchy "rescue" Anne-Marie when they learn what Carface is using her for, Carface realizing Anne-Marie's gone and the whole bedtime sequence.
@@osmanyousif7849 that would make a pretty interesting plot my man
This movie is an amazing classic. I'm sorry about your dog, I hope you're doing better.
RIP Teddy, you will always be in our hearts! He had a good long life. May he be showered with doggie bones forever in Heaven🙌🕊🐕
Seeing a video about my favourite childhood cartoon--->instant click.
A nice film like this has a terrifying dos game.
Rest in peace Teddy.
Musou San: It was also on the Amiga without the ear-rape sound.
I'm sorry you lost your doggie. I'm sure you gave him a long happy life. May he rest peacefully, rolling around in the clouds in Dog Heaven.
Sorry to hear that your dog Teddy passed away, at least he's in a better place now.*hug*
This man has brought back my childhood with 9, the iron giant, the land before time, and now all dogs go to heaven!!!! Thank you so much.
Magneto: Show me the best Lil boy
Man: Courage the cowardly dog!
Magneto: I said a real good boy!
Man: oh I know, Teddy!
Magneto: Perfection.
I can’t remember this film being this dark as a kid, but saying that nether did I think that with the Dinosaurs were back film so there’s that
Itchy was always nice to Ann.
Itchy was clearly jealous of Anne Marie. Jesus, didn't you watch the entire movie?
I thought he was worried the girl would get them killed just by having her @ChelseatheCreativeFox-pc2xz
@@ChelseatheCreativeFox-pc2xz
And he made Charlie mad too yet everyone misphrased what he was saying he didn't even mean it when you're mad you say things you don't mean.
And Anne Marie misunderstood it since she's a little kid and didn't know.
Rest in peace lil' buddy.Don't forget him, because he won't forget you.He will always be with you.Right in your heart 💔
I grew up with 2 dog and when I was little (around 6) one of them passed away and my parents got me and my sister this movie to help us and it actually made me feel a lot better it made me sad but it helped me cope with the loss of my dog. This movie will always hold a special place in my heart
The perfect good boi doesn’t exi-
*Teddy pops up*
R.I.P good doggo
I used to watch this movie almost every day as a kid. I watched this just recently, at least 20 years later, and it felt SO weird remembering every single line and sound effect and piece of music as it happened...
When I was a child I watched this, I was traumatized but after years, I fell for dogs again.
I hope you are feeling better. To me losing a dog is like losing a family member.
Thank you for the fun review!
I used to watch this when I was young all the time this really brings back memories

You should review more Bluth films like NIMH and American Tail, I would love to know your thoughts on more of his films.
he did a video on nimh
@@august6604 Yeah, but he still has An American Tail left.
I never noticed this before now but Marie looks like Snow White
I’m sorry for your loss and I love the video keep up the good work
This was a movie from my CHILDHOOD. And in my opinion, has one of the best redemption arcs in movies. This is such a good movie!
I had this on VHS and loved it as a child. It was amazing and that along with the 'Land before time' series was my childhood!
2:38 He's reading "War and Peace". I've never caught that before.
I feel like in the 2nd movie they were going to put Annmarie again but the voice of Annmarie had passed with her mother and father from a double murder/suicide rip Judith Barsi 💔🕊👼
I remember watching this on VHS at my grans house and I'd watch it every week and cry 😭
Oh hell's yes,I've been waiting for you to review this movie!
I would have loved to see this in theaters..
Omg simplifying the plot made me question one of my childhood favorites. oh dear.
My deepest condolences go out to you Steve. I have experienced the lose of 2 dogs and I understand the heartbreak you are going through.
Did you know that the secret of Nihm was based loosely off of a book called "The Rats Of Nihmph"? I say loosely because both movies have the same loose plot, rats are tested on, and become stronger, and better that the average rat!
You should totally review The Fox and The Hound, the first one though, not the.... Semi prequel.......?
Midquel is the Term I think..
@@Kairos_Akuma Idk, cause The Fox and The Hound 2 was taken place after Todd and Copper met as children, but before they grew up, even though they eventually grow up in the first movie, so Idk what to call it
and The Little Fox
Sora Dragonhart I LOVE The Fox & The Hound.

Emily Mendenhall 🤢🤮
*claps* Yes, yes and yes! This needs to be reviewed! As long that he doesn't wanna get sued by the Mouse himself.

PETA be like we Send ALL dogs to heaven
This is a childhood memory for me. It was one of the movies, my whole family would watch and sob over together. I remember even my dad had a bit watery eyes at the end and I saw him cry like 5 times so far. It's kind of a family tradition, alongside 'the last unicorn', the secrets of nimh, the movies with that little mouse going to America (always forget the English name) and the Ducktales, my, brother, our parents and I were glued on the couch for these.
I LOVED this movie when I first watched it some years ago! The whole concept was just so unique and mesmerising. There are tons of decent animated movies that no one talks about out there, just like this one. Do more if possible! ♥
No Steve. Don’t make me cry... again 😰
I wanted to watch this so much. As a kid when i got the cd i was so happy but i never watched it bc it was stoled from me the same day
That must have sucked :(
Well now u can watch it on youtube :D
I remember watching this as a kid and I loved it to bits. Also I'm sorry about your dog but I'm sure that your dog is in a better place
This film has always been one of my favourites and one of the only ones that I always cry at.
Even when the clip played and you called Charlie a good boy, I teared up. Since our German shepherd died it always hits me harder.
"why don't you have a seat right over hear for me." I essentially died.
Man, I loved this movie growing up... never saw the sequel tho!
I was so little, I didn't understand half of what was actually going on. Probably only liked it because it had movement tbh.
Aw I remember watching this as a kid....That explains alot
So sorry to hear about the loss of your furbaby 😓, I lost my dog Luna a few years ago. Though I've adopted 3 more dogs since then, there's still a huge hole in my heart without her here. The only comforting thought I have is that at least she passed away peacefully while I was holding her in my arms, knowing she was greatly loved.
Im 2 years late. Im sorry for your loss Steve. I recently lost a cat. I know how it feels :(
You should review The Last Unicorn next
Omg yes
That movie freaked me out as a kid so i agree completely.
Remember trying to watch this in the MRI, did not go well.
It's free on UA-cam, we all can see it again
I recently lost my dog last week and my heart goes out to you. Please don't be so hard on yourself to do these reviews. Your dog spent all his life loving you as you loved him. I'm sorry for your good boy. He's out there waiting for you at the rainbow bridge where he's spending his day playing all day in the meadows. Sending lots of love from California!💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕 Hugs and love!
Rest in peace, ted...
Even I, the ultimate life form, can, and will, cry now
Glad to have a jojo fan here
