    There is a few negative comments about this video, yeh the pike is out of the water for longer than what some people seem acceptable. Please remember this is a demonstration video. River piker will obviously do this alot quicker in practice. This is a great video and hats off to him for sharing

      Cheers Alan. I think most people do realise that so I don't worry too much about the few nagative comments, but i appreciate you sticking up for me. Not an easy video to do on your own but one that i wanted to do as there are still plenty of people who just don't know how to even start. On a normal day that pike would have been chinned out, uhooked and put back in about 20 seconds total as you know. The other thing to remember (and i think i may have said this in the video) the pike was rested a few times in the net for a good times and then that was edited out. Again, that isn't perfect it can lead to the pike becoming a bit stressed but how are we supposed to even attempt a video like this otherwise? If i remember, next video I do i'll include a full unhooking, real time so that people cans ee what happens. tight lines pal

      @@riverpiker Cut the hook. Simple. Most people are horrible at unhooking a fish...of its stuck just cut the dam hook, pull it out, and out the fish in the water...

    I once saved a Jack Pikes life, we were just about to start fishing on a course lake and I got talking about Pike to this old timer that was fishing. He said "I’ve just caught one and I’ve just thrown it in the bushes because they are a nuisance". After over an hour, he packed up and left and so I figured I'd check around to find this Pike. To my amazement, sure enough, there it was, a Pike in the bushes, still breathing and very much alive. I did the as to be expected revive motion in the water and it took off as if it had only just been caught. AMAZING!

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  8 років тому +13

      Wow Mark that really is amazing pal. Shame some of the old timers still think that way. The best course fishing waters in the country are also some of the best pike waters in the country. Many of the poor waters for course fish are also pretty poor for pike. Seems to be a pattern emerging there i'd say. Well done on saving the pike, I like to think you will be rewarded by the pike gods one day.

      Started my pike fishing in the 90s and match fishermen and old fishermens attitude to pike was nothing but disgusting, throwing them in bushes was the norm for these dinosaurs, absolutely infuriated me! They would look down there nose at me for being a pike fisherman! Things have got better thank goodness!

    • @gervang1820

      My dad and brother hates pike, but they still throw it back in the water or let it unhook itself.

    • @tom7245
      @tom7245 6 років тому +7

      I'd imagine having plenty of pike in the water is a sign of a healthy fish population, much like having a sparrowhawk in the garden is a sign of a good bird population. Throwing it in the bushes is disgraceful thing to do nevertheless.

      Well done bud, I used to find quite a few pike in the hedge (well, my dog sniffed em out more like) down the canal, the silver fish boys did it quite a lot, what pisses some of em off is pike anglers using the fish they like catching as live/deadbaits, what narks me is that if they are going to do it, at least they could knock it on the head so it doesn't suffer-but then I suppose they will say livebait suffer, so I guess you can't win, but at least that jack was lucky you got it back. Over here in France, I find decent chub dead on the banks -chucked there by trout anglers, pisses me right off.

    this is just what i needed. I think pike are fantastic, however unhooking one has always put me off from going; but recently watching your videos has inspired me to give it a go. I've bought all the tools i need and feel much more confident. Not got one in the net yet but had one follow right under my feet yesterday which got my heart going. Can't wait to bag one now. Cheers

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  7 років тому +2

      Matey that's brillinat to hear. None of it is easy, catching the first or unhooking it. but that follow has already got you excited for more and i promise this pike lure fishing game is just awesome. I can guarantee your first pike is not too far away. Keep doing what ever you did before that got the follow. Mix up the retrieves with faster, slower, pauses and the rest to try and trigger a hit. Some days they grab everything and others you've no chance of gettingone to take. As for unhooking, the first one might be tricky. Not sure where to put the fingers, sharp teeth everywhere and then those hooks that always seem to be in a dangerous place. This video does help, you will have the stuff in your head. so just be organised, take a breather and then just go for it. Be firm and confident. Once the hooks are out and away from you both, have a quick look at where everything is in the pikes mouth and where your fingers go. It will get easier but eventually something will go wrong and that will either be raker rash, a nasty cut from the teeth or worse still a hook in the finger, we've all done them all. Enjoy it pal and keep me updated.

    Excellent video. I tend to be put off fishing for pike because of the stress and fear (for both the pike and me!) around the whole unhooking process. I've read about getting your hand in through the gill covers but seeing it demonstrated so well here really helps. Good stuff! :-)

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  6 років тому +1

      Good to hear its a help Steve. It's not easy to film it all on your own but I think it does a good job. If you are a bit nervous try and get out with someone more experienced but failing that, watch this a few times and it will help loads. It's still a bit daunting but the confidence comes with practice. Also a big tip is to have one hook, maybe a single hook which will be mutch better than treble hooks flying about.

      cheer Drew appreciate that. I often knock up videos without any planning or thought to be honest but this is probably the only exception. I wanted to do my best so that it helps as many as possible, and then obviously that helps all the pike too. I actually put this up before a load of long time pikers on a forum and asked them to rip it to bits first, so to get their seal of approval was enough for me to be happy to use it. It has since gone on to be used by the Pike anglers Club of Great Britain who link to the video on their page. gives me a warm fuzzy glow inside. cheers bud

      Great to hear Ian. Preparation and having all the right kit and having it near by is massive mate. Trust me, struggling to find your pliers when you have a pike thrashing around with sharp teeth and treble hooks everywhere is a nightmare. After that just be confident, spot your hooks and get your hand on the opposite side if possible, have a firm hold and just go for it. The more you do it the easier it gets, though you will still have really bad ones to deal with at times. cutters are awesome for getting you out of trouble, snip the hook points and its easy. good luck mate and if you need me you know where i am.

    Great video. I caught my first pike 2 days ago while fishing for carp. On retrieving my rig the pike breached the water and attacked my boily hooking it's self and by miracle didn't bite through my line. But as I've never handled a pike before it was pretty scary when you don't know how to handle it. Luckily my inexperience didn't stop me from unhooking and releasing it safely. I had seen previous vids on gripping through the Gills but wasn't 100 percent on trying this on this occasion but after watching your vids I feel much more clued up and confident. I may have a new love for pike fishing now as well as carping.

      Darren that's ace mate, ha ha! It happens a few times with course anglers. They love to hit swim feeders too. Massive well done on unhooking it and not just cutting the line and chucking it back, which is what many end up doing. As for your pike in the furture, well now you have seen one up close you have a good idea what it is all about. This video will help too so that's good, and now you can put it all together and in time the confidence will grow. Practice is all you need now mate. good luck with the pike fishing mate and if you need any more help you know where I am.

    Awesome video, awesome and concise explanation too.
    I've been a witness of a old trend coming back for some reason, and that's the myth that pike is most calm and paralyzed when being handled by the eyes(!?!?!) ... It is the trend among older fisherman in my area and I tried to explain that they basically destroy any chance of catching pray again if they release that pike back into the water. But usually I just get confused and angry looks - as if fish don't feel pain and the magically get well from poked eyes :(
    I wish more people to see this video of yours. Keep it up!

      Hi Philip. Welcome to pike fishing mate, they're a magical creature, you're going to love them. Glad the video helped mate, that's what it's there for so to hear it did is worth the effort. You're in a bit of a flap with all those teeth and hooks but having the gear set up already, or at least well organised is key. It gets easier the more fish you catch but always keep your guard up as disaster is only a head shake away. Great to hear you are off the mark. Don't worry about the weight too much but a good set of scales will sort that out next time. Good luck with your piking mate and keep me updated how you get on.

      It's not always as easy as the videos suggest, for me too, so keep at it. Get out and find some locations but keep them to yourself if you find them as there's not always too many to go around. Keep in mind this time of year might be for piking, but it is also hard at times. Little and often is the key, both to give you a chance of getting lucky and also as not to grind you in to the ground with long hard days. Good luck mate.

      River Piker Hi, went out again last Thursday, spent what seemed a lifetime casting, thought i'd just drop the lure straight at my feet as you never know. Bang! another one bites the dust (and lure) a two-footer and used my scales this time to weigh it in at 8lbs. I'm getting there, thanks again mate for the encouragement and time taken to reply to my posts.

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  9 років тому

      Philip Rowe
      Nice one Philip. As you found out, always watch out right below your feet. Most people walk up to the bank, 6inch from the water and then try to cast to the far side scaring everything off in front of them. Instead, stay 6 foot back, out of sight and cast out and fish the bit of water right in front of you first. If you were on the far bank you'd swear there would be a pike in this spot and try to hit it wouldn't you? Good to see the fish are coming mate, it helps knowing you are doing something right. So you know from that fish, there's a good chance the other was a double. Not to worry that you don't know exactly how big as you'll have another nice fish before long I bet you. Keep enjoying it, the more lures you throw about the more spectacular stuff you are going to witness.

      @@riverpiker Thanks River Piker. I've just filmed a programme for BBC they took me to try and catch my first pike (Comes out next spring) I failed to catch on the day because they'd had pollution on the canal I was taken to and the fish had been netted but nobody was told. We later found some perch and had a good hour or so full of them. My friends have just taken me to the cotswold water park where eventually I did catch my first pike only a small jack but it was the fishing itself I found the most exciting. Absolutely fantastic watching pike coming in for lures.....I'm well and truly hooked now. Thanks to this video I had the confidence to ask if I could unhook my fish, my mate told me I'd be better off watching the first one but I'm happy to say I now feel sure I can do it myself. Thanks for giving me that confidence. "Gone fishing with Will Millard" I think the programme's called but I was told the title could change.

      @@riverpiker Thanks, I think my highlight was watching a pike follow right under the rod tip "I slowed the retrieve, he took it and I pulled the lure straight out of his mouth" Brilliant!! He deserved his freedom that one. Now I just need to find a lake full of pike near to me in Mid Wales, I have the Wye on my doorstep and the upper Wye is rarely fished for pike "everyone tends to go lower down". Nothing like a stretch of river to yourself though.

      Hey John. That's all you can do pal. Be prepared. It helps if someone is with you but plenty of people, me included, learn the hard way. Lures with one hook, especially a single and/or barb less will make it so much easier. Have your gear ready before you start fishing so when you are in a flap you can get the tools you need. Be confident and get a nice solid hold, without trying to rip it's jaw off, and just do it quickly. Good luck pal, hope you catch a pike and if you do let me know how it goes.

    The second or third pike I had to unhook was a deep hooked 2lb Pike, that was tricky. You're absolutely right, put it back in the water and let it breath before you do anything - that way I had longer to unhook it safely rather than starving it of oxygen. Also, forceps can be very helpful, because if you get a little jack big pillars can be pretty hard to use. Take some smaller pillars or forceps if too if you can, I just take a multi tool with some smaller pillars on as well as my bigger pillars.

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  7 років тому +1

      It's a tough one, because when you put them back for a rest they then come out full of energy which doesn't help you. But no point leaving the fish out too long and then putting it back dead is there? So you have to rest it, give the fish a chance especially when it might have just been fighting like mad before hand. good selection of tools helps get you through those awkward hooks ups. The pliers with the bent nose are really good too as they help you turn the hooks out if they are deep down.

    @castleman7300fx No sure why I can't reply directly to your comment so hope you see this. Larger fish are usually easier as they thrash around less and there's loads more room to put your hand in around the gills without getting near teeth or hooks. If you get a pike that you can unhook easily, have a look closer at the pike while the hooks are out of the way then next time you can be ready for a more tricky hook up.

      Great to hear you're giving it a go. Great fun fishing with small lures for all sorts of predators that fight like mad on the light gear. with smaller hooks on the small lures it's not so much a problem but I always take a good set of long nosed pliers. Forceps are good but not a strong so if using bigger hooks you can't always get the hooks out. If there are pike in your waters and you use lures it's only a mater of time before you catch a pike so get tooled up. Tight lines pal and keep me updated how you go.

    In Canadian waters I have caught hundreds of pike larger than that one. In no case did I straddle the pike. You simply get your hand up under the gill plate keeping outside pressure and then hold the pike up and remove the hook.
    Never lost a pike yet while unhooking. Makes the process much more complicated than it is here.

      +youpoptube1 Mate that's awesome to hear. The video is here to help both angler and fish. It's a confidence thing unhooking fish and knowing what to do gives you that confidence. There's always a risk of something going wrong, I've had hooks in me as have many other pike anglers. there's teeth and gills that cut like hell too so expect blood at some point. But get the fish safe on a mat, get a good chin hold and get those hooks out quick and it's pretty simple in the end.
