- This video is a tutorial on how to unhook a pike that has been hooked just into the stomach lining and can sometimes be quite tricky. With the right tools a know how it can be a relatively quick and stress-less procedure.

i had a 10lb pike in the scottish highlands last saturday when spinning, once i got it into the bank i saw a trace in its throat, i managed to get my hook out and also remove the old trace completely, it was very satisfying to help that fish and relieve its pain

Could do with more on popup baits, canal, and lake. Please. Nice info on deep hooked fish. I've had to deal with three over the years, me only one , and the other two were helping others,who were less experienced.
Just a note I got the exact same cutters on temu for £1.88 robbed me long nose from me tool box already had forceps thankfully only had 1 pike thus far with deeply hooked rig in(not mine)top vid as always hope you make a speedy recovery 👍
Chris - struck a Pike on 5 seconds the other day only to see the top treble at the top of the stomach lining.
You can also 'tease' the stomach lining forward to enable unhooking (which is what I did) - can you tell me, once you have 'cut' the barbed treble, are you leaving the remainder in the fish? - there isn't anything in this tutorial to say you have removed it? - or how to do it?
Only had to 'cut' trebles twice - and have always retrieved the remainder - you leave it, you are 'stapling' the Pike's gut.
I also have the Fox Rage set of tools - bought the complete set - always be prepared...

useful tutorial for us duffers......what happens to the points you cut off?..just thinking if the cutters are magnetic they would hold the cut off pieces so could be extracted.

The fox cutters and forceps are superb . Anything deep literally cut the hook apart and theyre long as well so need need go side gills
A lot of water's in Cornwall only allow single circle hooks the hook up rate is possibly slightly lower but generally really easy to get out I probably unhook 75% of my pike just with my fingers and have had numerous 20s and one close to the magic 30 all on single hooks

when you cut the barbed hook on the bend does that mean you are leaving just the barb in the fish?

Its a great set tht unhook set from fox , av got the small pack myself in ky pike fishing tackle,
Been pike fishing for around 10 years and learned to dead bait from an old boy. His advice has never let me down - never put a hook further forward than the dorsal fin on the bait, and hook points facing the tail. The theory is that fish often have a spike on the dorsal fin, so while a pike may take the whole fish into its mouth, it won't push it onto its stomach until it is happy. Old boy always waited for the fish to run and never deep hooked a pike in 40 years dead baiting. The only fish you loose using this method are small and not worth the bother.

Im off pike fishing tommorrow but im only allowed with my mentours supervision.. and im only allowed to use size 2 cercle hooks on a wire trace.. i had a piar of wire cutters but they rusted bad then vanished i hope my tutour doesnt get mad over that.. 😊 as for my 1st pike it was tiny and by accident as the pike lesson was over and i was to put the pike kit away but id prepabited a swim with worm groubdbait then fished my light quivertip fir perch with the smallest worms. But after one worm was pintched my quivertip bounced again and went queit . So i left it fir 5 minites while preping stuff but then when i went to real in to bait check i found a little jackpike had ingulfed my worm right to the back of his stomach a tiny size 14 hook and then sat on it without moven till i reeled it.. luckly carp freibds where there to help unhook him took a while too then rested him then swam out my hand.. was a most exciting moment . Hopefully i catch a better pike properly tommorrow ❤

Been pike fishing 50 yrs ,,and i always hit them first sign of a bite i would rather miss one than deep hook one always use barbless hooks as well ,,
I appreciate you want to remove the hook but what happens to the barbed point you cut off?
Main reqson is hook placement, as others have said, you have bottom trebele far to forward, no further than middle of bait or dorsal fin.

Very helpful for less experienced pike anglers like me. What happens to the hook points? Also, I read somewhere that keeping the trace/line tight is a good idea to pull the stomach forward and that it goes back with no problem afterwards. Correct? Loving the channel.

He only left one point in, as it's in the stomach, the digestive juices being acidic will dissolve it over time. You have to be very gentle pulling the stomach forward, but sometimes you've no other option, best to strike early and be on your rods at all times.
Would sticking a magnet to ya cutters make it easier to pick any small pieces out instantly instead of having to with ceps? or hinder you in getting annoyed when it sticks to the wrong thing.
It would definitely get caught on other parts of the hook mate

Happened to me last year lure fishing, i even had the waterwolf camera rigged up, and the pike came up behind the gobby shad and engulfed it. Ended up being deep hooked, luckily i got it out ok and the pike released unharmed.
What happened to the hook points you cut off? Did they stay in the fish?

Do you leave what’s left of the hook that you have cut still in ? What happens to that part of the hook still in the flesh ?
Firstly don't forget the Pike is deigned to eat large, raw, scaley, sharp externally and internally boned fish.
Now know you cannot relate Steel to fish bone but consider that just the snipped off tips of the hook are left behind but will soon drop into the stomach and be passed out through the vent with the other faeces.

A lot of pikers don't realise that you don't have to go down the mouth to be able to snip of hook points. If you're REALLYcareful you can go in through the gills and get a better angle on the hooks.
Striking early is 100% the way to go im only 19 but been pike fishing for about 10 years , ive never gut hooked a pike on dead baits because of this normally hooked with 1 treble in scissors

I put the lowest treble no further than halfway down the bait, so even if half the bait goes into the throat there is no hook in it. If the fish comes off i put it down to being a small fish anyway.
Mate I fractured my elbow 5 months ago I cannot fish at all may need surgery now because the pain getting worse worst bone to fracture. Hope yours ain't as bad as mine. I was on a bike Aslo coming back from a canal I was hit by a motorcycle he hit my elbow doing about 60. Caused me to go over the handle bars n he buggers off too.. the fracture. Heald but I very limited movement I can't even hold up a net. Been physio no Improvement handed back to the fracture clinic had a ct scan on my arm gotta wait 3 weeks for the results and appointment with the fractured clinic. Really Really hope your arm doesn't end up like mine buddy its shit. I just wanna go fishing and back to work

At home, you can tell 'er-indoors that you're not allowed to lift dusters or tea-towels for at least 10 weeks. 🤣 It pays to have the right tools and long enough tools. You can get side cutters, short ones, but for big pike you do need those long ones. Good forceps and/or long pliers are also essential; you don't want to catch your hand on those teeth. Better also if someone can help by keeping the trace tight.

Pike anglers in general are the most hypocritical advice givers in fishing! Everyone goes on about striking early but 75% will give out this advice then literally wait and watch either the float or line peeling away, taking time by guessing what’s happening, "giving it time to get the whole bait in its mouth", "letting it run then wait for it to stop and turn the bait" I’ve heard it all! Drop off indicators dropping on a take then spend a minute guessing what the now slack line is doing by either watching ir feeling the line, it’s all bollocks! Some pike with engulf a bait instant, some will wander off with it for ages, some will gently take it then turn it about several times while hardly taking line! unless sight fishing its next to impossible to know exactly what’s happening down there, so everyone needs to get over the sulk of not getting the odd hook up and actually strike at the first take instead of the old "I’m gonna give it longer this time cos I didn’t get a hook up on that last run" selfish madness

That's what i recently wittnessed this week:
A fishing mate, who always suggests to strike asap let the line run and run and run. Even when i asked him, what he is waiting for, he didn't strike.
Finally, when he set the hook, a small Pike showed up.
Thanks god the bait was too big, so he couldn't swallow it whole.
To sum up: you are totally right. Pikefishers are great in giving advices they are not following by themselves 🤦🏽
Yup, that's why I prefer lures. Instant strikes and way more fun... No deep hooking or wondering whats happening. Instant hit.

I always strike at the soonest possible point of a take,, I find its utter madness to wait around after the alarm goes and the drop off indicator falls,
I would rather miss a take than deep hook a fish any day!
That’s reason I stick with lure on pike I personally think dead bait is high risk to pike 😢can do long term damage to them

I’d be very much in support of treble hooks becoming illegal for deadbait. Some countries do that and I see why.

If you are deep hooking fish then stop pike fishing or go with someone more experienced. Deep hooked fish are a result of poor bite indication, delayed striking or spacing of trebles in relation to bait size. A gut hooked fish is lethal for the fish regardless if the trebles are removed due to risk of infection or damage to gill rakers.
What happened to the hook ends!! I have seen this done with wire cutters which leaves the hook ends still in the pike gut and that old rubbish the hooks will rot out is rubbish
The best way to do this is to get a old leather key ring then put a stiff piece of wire through the end not a hook or something!

Piece of stiff wire through the trace swivel hold and the key ring leather piece in your mouth and gently pull on the trace then go through the gill rakers with forceps and turn the hooks

P.S - if you make your injury worse by fishing with a fractured elbow, please don't attend the hospital - you will have exacerbated the injury by taking no notice of what the medical team tell you - I have a son who's a nurse - trust me - they can do without idiots not taking advice...
