When you brought up the over saturation of religious horror i was reminded of Toni Bryanne's video of 'The Constant Mocking of Christianity in Hollywood', in where she remarks on how Hollywood often uses that religion as the butt of the joke, in sexual ways with nuns, or in horror ways with possessions. Yet they're too afraid to touch on all the other religions in the world and all that can be done with other cultures. I think there's a lot there.

My whole issue is even though I’ll get excited for some of the remakes/sequels/prequels, there’s just so many of them that it’s overwhelming and ruins some of the excitement, plus the duds will discourage me even more. Some of them (like first omen) surprise me and make me hopeful again, but unfortunately most aren’t like that😭

Remakes, reboots and sequels is why my love of film died down in the last few years. It felt like there were hardly any original creative movies being made in favour of poorly made rehashes of older movies. Yes there are some done well, but they are few and far between. I want more original stories or adaptations of really creative and interesting ideas. I want filmmakers who have passion for their projects and not just churning something out without understanding what they’re making
I could have listened to you pop off for an hour about this!! It’s so frustrating! Like you said, it would be a different story if they were putting in any effort.
I'm absolutely agree with you. There's no effort in these newer remakes. It's like they just put new characters in the exact same movie. One movie I want to see that is not horror is Twisters. From the trailer it looks like a remake of the 1996 movie Twister.
Great vlog upload, and I'm totally in agreement. Imagination seems to have disappeared a little in Horror even if studios went down the adaptation route, there's a plethora to work with, without just "re-imagineing" someone else's film.
Sorry I'm replying to my own comment, just wanted to add that today I received the Tobe Hooper "remake" of Toolbox Murders. Never seen it but heard good things 👍🤔😂
I always forget the 2016 cabin fever remake exists and my day is immediately ruined when I’m reminded it does. It’s worse than the original in just about every way. Remakes are only good when they’re done right, and not many do it.
Your exhausted facepalm thumbnail is perfect for this video, especially regarding Cabin Fever cause when I tried watching that remake I gave up around 25 mins in cause it was so unnecessary and basically used the exact same script whyyyy
I love this rant so much because this is also happening in the Video Game industry as well. I'm more heavily into video games than movies, but we are stuck with remakes, remasters and sequels. But the issue with that also is, there are SO many people/gamers out there that aren't embracing when a new IP comes along. We recently had game press conference which showcased new IP's and ideas especially from indie developers and people whinged "it was mid" or terrible. Luckily with movies, a lot more people are probably willing to see a new idea than just sequels, and I feel movies are doing purely for a 'cash grab' but I wonder if it's also because people just want what they are familiar with. Am I a hypocrite? Yeah, because some of the remakes and remasters I get super excited for but I also want more fresh ideas!! I want something new and original. I don't know - there's my rant haha.
The irony is that we need original horror to make reboots even if it doesn’t do well initially. A lot of cult Classics are that way because they didn’t have immediate popcorn appeal but had more depth
I was so mad when I saw the grudge. There was another movie we could’ve watched but I was stupid and convinced 5 other people to watch the grudge. Everyone but me fell asleep and I just had my face in my hands. I felt so bad.
After what Christoph Ganes said about how only women care about their children as an excuse to replace Harry in the first Silent Hill movie, I won't touch them. If he had just left Harry in it, we wouldn't have that stupid subplot with the detective and breaking into an orphanage (especially since Harry and his wife found Cheryl on the side of the road). Plus Pyramid Head is a James specific monster as are the sexy nurses.
I feel I shouldn’t be surprised that you have a background in psych (especially as a psychology major myself) but that’s super cool to hear! I think people like remakes because we like seeing others’ interpretations of things…but we also like money. And we don’t like change. It’s more than that but uh…it’s 1am, I’ll come back to this when I’ve slept-
As a European whose native language isn't English and who watched movies with subtitles my whole life. I feel privileged judging Americans on reading the subtitles while watching a movie being to hard.
Dude agree so so so damn much with Black Christmas, Pet Semetary and Firestarter. I didn't know they tried to redo The Craft, like are you serious?? That og movie kicks ass 100%.
So I had not heard of Coherence. I looked up the trailer and looks awesome. It’s on Tubi. I guess with a sequel I should see the original now. I have such a long list of movies to see thanks to you, What the Horror, and the Haunted Beard. You all are killing me, haha
I saw The Strangers in the theater back in the day, and the reason is WAS so scary & unexpected was because you didn’t already know what the “twist” was. This new movie, it’s in the gd tagline. Ugh. I’m absolutely NOT bothering with this one. Or any other horror remakes for that matter. I wish this remake era would end, it’s killing any creativity & real suspense.
Completely agreed, with every single film you mentioned and all of your reasons. And I agree with the ones you’re excited for 🤣 I’m ALWAYS willing to give remakes a chance. But The Exorcist Believer couldn’t have been worse if it tried 😭 I couldn’t believer that after decades of bad remakes, Hollywood isn’t even PRETENDING to try anymore.
I agree about the remakes in the 2000s. One of my fave horror films is a remake. And I think the 80s was great with remakes and films in general! I'm honestly tired of the "Requeals". Some Remakes have grabbed me but these Requeals have not worked for me. They range from okay but not as good to down right annoying.
this video made me realise they remade the grudge again- what the, the whole thing with the grudge or more so juon 13:24 that makes it so terrifying is that it’s fully inline with japanese superstition and it makes it even more horrific
I’m glad Coherence is getting a spotlight but how TF are they gonna do a good sequel of it? The reason I love it so much is because of the constant build of confusion, fear, and infighting.
I actually looooove Carrie from 2013 lol but I do agree that we are getting way too many remakes! My fav remake is Evil Dead 2013. Doing a reimagining & the same story but with a new twist is how they should make remakes & I feel like the peak was the 2000s. So at this point, it’s like beating a dead horse.
This is why I enjoy indie small brands. The reason why big brands do this is because we don't complain enough about it. We still pay for the movie enough to justify their corporate practices.
I like this list, you were very funny. I agree with you on all these remakes being terrible! Also I work in the industry and I know for a fact that some of the cast in black Christmas 2019 were bullies (I won’t say who) to other cast members and it shows in how hollow and soulless the movie felt
OMG I am glad I was not the only one noticing this. This economy is already difficult enough to go to the movie theatres and when I do get the urge to go its just remakes. If I look online for stuff coming up, it is just more and more remakes down the line. It is just exhausting and a main contributor why I don't even consider movie theatres anymore
It’s really funny, because the only movie I would be alright with getting another remake or sequel is Friday the 13th, but we aren’t getting it. Instead we are getting a series that doesn’t even focus on Jason, which is not what people seem to want. Certain movies and series work really well being film franchise, but they are remaking and giving sequels to stuff that shouldn’t be touched. I feel like remakes were bigger in the 2000s and sequels have been a staple in horror since the 80s. Remakes definitely come in waves, and we had a break for a few years.
I agree that the 70s is a great decade for horror, something about the atmosphere. But "black Christmas" from 2006 had a weird campy charm like it was paying homage to the seventies. Also about the people in the comments considering evil dead 2013 as a remake, I feel it's in the same universe as the original and evil dead rise because of the mention of the three volumes of the necronomicon. I want the three of them to team up🤞

honestly i understand where you’re coming from but as a huge fan of the it movies (the newer ones- not the tim curry miniseries) i will be SAT for welcome to derry, no matter how bad it is 💀
They don't want to let go of the IPs and they don't want to pay people for new stories. It really sucks because there is so much out there. And as a person who loves fantasy and science fiction I feel deprived.
Agree with you 10000% to the lack of originality and more duality is astonishing. All of those were horrible and I’d like to add “Flatliners” one of my all time favorites that was butchered and made me rage
I refuse to watch the Flatliners remake. Just no. The original is too good to be sullied like that.
@@salyx Smart move because it’s awful
Omg I was literally just watching your Riley Sager video again after reading one of his books!!! Then I saw this and I was like *that can wait* ....😊
Loving all the types of videos you’re giving us Sarah. We are being well fed! Keep up the good work 👻🫶🏽
I wonder if/when this trend will end, it has to at some point right? Even if it's the 2040's or beyond? Then this whole 'era' will looked back upon as the 'unimaginative age'.
Lindsey Beer’s upcoming remake of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow being released by Paramount Pictures has me beyond excited! One of my favorite feel good/fall/spooky time movies.
Girl go off. My whole issue is even though I’ll get excited for some of the remakes/sequels/prequels, there’s just so many of them that it’s overwhelming and ruins some of the excitement, plus the duds will discourage me even more. Some of them (like first omen) surprise me and make me hopeful again, but unfortunately most aren’t like that😭
Please do the deep dive. Im here for it. (5:58 timestamp)
Just watched The Strangers Chapter 1 last weekend. We def didn’t need a remake. The 2008 original was epic. They should’ve let it die with dignity.
Literally laughed at how goofy Ch 1 was. Most of the acting was not convincing at all, except the main actress. That poor woman carried the weight of that movie on her shoulders. She gave it her all. bless her heart 😂😂
I absolutely love watching you rant. ❤❤
I was wondering what the first Horror movie remake was. And the oldest I’ve found so far is actually “House of Wax” (1953)” apparently it’s a remake of the movie “Mystery of the Wax Museum (1933)”
I've been watching ur videos for a couple years now while in school studying to get my psychology degree and am JUST finding out you have a psychology background.... it all makes sense to me now :)
this was so cathartic lol, i felt every word
I really liked the Pet Sematary remake (mainly cuz of the dark tone, especially the ending), and Cabin Fever: Patient Zero.
I blame going digital. It’s more accessible to make movies now so we’re all just drowning in the over saturated market
I’ve recently come across your channel. Didn’t see the video from 2019, but after hearing your Strangers Chapter 1 review I’ve been looking forward to this
American psycho is getting a remake and that upsets me SO MUCH the film is already perfect
Are you fucking kidding me!?!?!?
@@tylerwatts3347 I KNOW RIGHT and it’s gonna be “modern” 😭
@@alicein_wonderland13 There's potential in that.
ohh hell nah
@@Paulxlno there’s not 😂
Remakes, reboots and sequels is why my love of film died down in the last few years.
Martyrs 2008 is my all time favorite movie. The American version to me is UNWATCHABLE
Same with Oldboy!
@crikool Man, I freaking HATE "Martyrs." Both of them. But it's cool that you enjoy the original 2008 French version. I'm glad you love it. 🙂👍
"Martyrs 2008 is my all time favorite movie."
Why???????
I could have listened to you pop off for an hour about this!! It’s so frustrating! Like you said, it would be a different story if they were putting in any effort.
I'm absolutely agree with you. There's no effort in these newer remakes. It's like they just put new characters in the exact same movie. One movie I want to see that is not horror is Twisters. From the trailer it looks like a remake of the 1996 movie Twister.
I don't like The Wicker Man (2006) but it's fun watching Nic Cage run around in a bear costume and play detective.
"Not the bees!"
Yeah, that remake could be considered laughably bad, especially because of the memes that it spawned.
The Rifftrax to Cage's Wickerman is pure joy + comedy.
I felt so bad.
i love your angry rants :D
Suspiria is a great remake, but it was very different stylisticLly from the original. Love it.
I just wanna say I loved The First Omen 💖
I have to agree, that film was incredibly visually stunning, I enjoyed it immensely.
Coherence is such an awesome original movie I love it so much hope you enjoy it 😊
I think" series" is popular now because "series" is on streaming, which most have. Movies means going to the cinema, which most don't go to nowadays.
If they made a tv series remake of 2007 Zodiac actually be really good idea
Completely agreed, with every single film you mentioned and all of your reasons. And I agree with the ones you’re excited for 🤣 I’m ALWAYS willing to give remakes a chance. But The Exorcist Believer couldn’t have been worse if it tried 😭 I couldn’t believer that after decades of bad remakes, Hollywood isn’t even PRETENDING to try anymore.
Also Possession (1981) remake was announced... why tho.
They’re trying to remake The Crow.
The ONE movie that as far as I’m concerned should’ve been off limits in terms of remaking.
Ooooo, I'm tired of it too, girl!! I like a remake when it's creative, but when it's a shot for shot...no.
Didn’t even hear about “welcome to derry” I will be sat.
this video made me realise they remade the grudge again- what the, the whole thing with the grudge or more so juon 13:24 that makes it so terrifying is that it’s fully inline with japanese superstition and it makes it even more horrific
I’m glad Coherence is getting a spotlight but how TF are they gonna do a good sequel of it? The reason I love it so much is because of the constant build of confusion, fear, and infighting.
Also, Coherence is streaming free on Tubi right now!
Black Christmas 2006 is something I rewatch every Christmas. It’s ridiculous but I love it
This is why I enjoy indie small brands. The reason why big brands do this is because we don't complain enough about it. We still pay for the movie enough to justify their corporate practices.
2:05 from the 30's to the 50's, there were a lot of sound remakes of silent films
i agree it’s getting frustrating. i was only upset by how much money the strangers made especially compared to abigail.
I finally saw the Strangers Chapter 1 and I understand your frustration. There was a lot left to milk out of the franchise in terms of questions.
This is such a good and relatable video
"Every day, I open Twitter..." - Sarah, 2024
I love listening to you rant about remakes. 😂 instantly clicked
NOT 2019 BEING 5 YEARS AGO, WOOF
It’s really funny, because the only movie I would be alright with getting another remake or sequel is Friday the 13th, but we aren’t getting it. Instead we are getting a series that doesn’t even focus on Jason, which is not what people seem to want. Certain movies and series work really well being film franchise, but they are remaking and giving sequels to stuff that shouldn’t be touched.
I feel like remakes were bigger in the 2000s and sequels have been a staple in horror since the 80s. Remakes definitely come in waves, and we had a break for a few years.
Carrie 2013 took misstep of cutting Carrie destroying the entire town
I agree that the 70s is a great decade for horror, something about the atmosphere. But "black Christmas" from 2006 had a weird campy charm like it was paying homage to the seventies. Also about the people in the comments considering evil dead 2013 as a remake, I feel it's in the same universe as the original and evil dead rise because of the mention of the three volumes of the necronomicon. I want the three of them to team up🤞
Ooh i want to see 28 years later
"house of wax" from the fifties starring the legend Vincent price is one of mt favourite horror films and it's a remake of the 30s one.
omg i forgot they made the new craft movie lmao. never saw it but based on the clips you showed, it looked like an old navy ad
Can’t click fast enough when Sara drops a vid!
