I believe the Breville can be adj by lifting off the bean hopper and there's 10 different adjs there as well which gives you a total of about 600 diff. grind settings.
I have had the Breville for 3 years now. It is insanely user friendly and stuff full of common sense with good quality grind. The controls leave nothing to want. After I have made adjustments for a new bean, it is very consistent with grind and mass. I cannot imagine any other product coming close to it at it's price point.
With the Smart Grinder pro you can adjust the burs and it ultimately has 600 settings "60 settings * 10 burr settings = 600* You can actually get the grind to match the Rancilio :) I mean of course its all about if you feel like going though that
Nice review. I have the Rocky by Rancilio in use for about ten years now. Since I care all about the freshness of the grind I decided against the doser variant. Paired with a E61 machine (the QuickMill Andreja Premium) it never has let me down. In my opinion the Rocky is a entry level grinder with some high-end internal parts. I would call Its design and appearance is a bit modest but honest after all.

Can't you take the upper burr out of the Breville and change it to go even finer/coarser? I imagine it was set at the middle setting. Should have been mentioned...

That being said, this video sort of implied that the Rocky is a better choice for an espresso grinder (partially because it can grind finer) - but with a small adjustment of a notch or two on the Breville the espresso range would be improved on the Breville. Depends on your bank. And no. Typically once you've done all the work to dial in your espresso, you don't want to screw it up by changing the grind. The best espresso grinders tend to be step less.
I have the Smart Grinder Pro and it is an excellent machine. You can further adjust it from it's 60 settings on the dial by adjust the burr itself. It has 10 settings so there are 600 potential grinds. You can make it as coarse of fine as you like. At half the price I feel it is the better machine. Thanks Gail!
Both nice little grinders. I still own my SMART grinder but now i'm in an espresso phase it's been usurped by my Mazzer. My personal take on these two is that if your mostly interested in brewing then the SMART is a good choice but if your buying for use with an espresso machine the Rocky is going to give a little more back.

Sent my Smart Pro back as it developed a fault within a couple of weeks - got a used Rocky, looks like a new one, swapped to new burrs for £140 total. Rocky seems so much more robust especially with direct drive motor compared to the much smaller one in Breville with problematic plastic in the drive gear
I've had the Rocky for about 10+ years and from day 1, the thing that bothered me most was having to hold down the grinding switch. Well, I figured out that I could easily replace that switch with an on/off rocker switch, which I did and it works perfectly. IIRC, I got the switch in the local hardware store... I neven understood why Rancilio decided to do it the way they do...

Did you notice a significant difference in consistency for the coarse grinds? I have an Espro press and a Chemex for pour over, but I don't make espresso at home, so medium to coarse grind consistency is more important than absolute fineness.
+pjl626 The Breville was more consistent, but you need to remember that it didn't go as course as the Rocky. And the courser you go, the less consistent your grind will be. That being said, we would still recommend the Breville for your brewing needs. We love the Breville for pour over!
I'm in pretty much the same situation, but i do drip/chemex/cold brew, no espresso, so again, fine control is key, is the smart grinder pro the best grinder for this application or is there a better grinder in the under 400ish$ range (I would like a "programmagble grinder" tho for those mornings...)

Have read up on Breville BES840XL Infuser and watched your video with interest. Now for a grinder which will last and will suit my requirements - at least until I kick the bucket! I understand when making coffee I should use 15grams coffee to 1 cup water. With regard to the Smart Pro Grinder, how much coffee is ground for the 1 cup setting? Or would the Rancilio Rocky be better? Your advice would be appreciated. Incidentally I have watched so many of your videos - all interesting and informative - many thanks. The Rocky will last you a good 10-15 years if cleaned and cared for properly. The Breville just doesn't have that lifespan. In your case, the Rocky would be best we think!
Love the new format without man hands chiming in every two seconds....Gail you rock!!! I am on the fence between the Rocky and the Baratza Preciso......both have great reviews. One thing to note, my machine is a Rancilio Silvia so I'm leaning towards the Rocky.
Hi. I am grinding arabica and I got the breville. I was grinding at 1-2 minimum settings but today the unit broke. IT got stuck and after cleaning up the motor is making a rattling noise. I bought the unit a little over a month ago. Breville will replace the unit, but I feel this unit won't stand the future and I will likely sold it as used and get the Rancilio instead.

Can you speak to how the Breville grinder pro compares to the Rocky when using NON pressurized filter baskets on the Infuser? I struggle getting my pressure up using the Pressurized basket primarily due to a cheap cuisinart burr grinder. Since the rocky produces a finer grind I am wondering if that would be a better choice for espresso shots, however, I like the features of the breville grinder better. Thoughts?
You'll get good results for non-pressurized espresso using either grinder. The Rocky is built very tough, though if you like the Breville's features and you already have the Infuser, that may be the way to go. Ultimately, up to you!
At the end of the day, which one will last 5 years with daily use. I heard that if the Breville breaks down there are no spare parts and the grinder is then junk.
With regular maintenance and cleaning, both of these machines should last that long. However, the Rocky is an absolute workhorse of a grinder. We've had one at our HQ that has never had to have parts replaced and gets super consistent use!

Hi! I'm looking to 'up' my espresso game and was looking to buy a good grinder before going all out on a rocket or something of the sort. I have Brevilles entry level machine currently. Would the breville pro be a solid option for just espresso use?
I would think about a used/refurb Rocky if you can find one. Much beefier/more robust item & less to go wrong. Massive direct drive motor compared to Breville's which has plastics in the drive gear. Also, Rocky has 50mm flat burrs, compared to Breville's circa 40/42mm conical - good luck trying to replace full set of burrs on Breville. I bought brand new Smart Pro which unfortunately failed within a couple of weeks ( I'm not suggesting this is common ) but the Rocky definitely seems stronger compared to Breville which always sounded laboured on finer grinds compared to Rocky

I won't give a thumbs down, cause your videos are awesome, but I was a little disappointed this one. I thought there would be a taste test at the end. I'm a newbie trying to learn and I keep seeing people mention that the grinder is more important than the espresso machine, but seeing grind results isn't the final result... the taste difference is.
Do you feel good about yourself doing that? The numbers aren’t universal on the grinders so it would be almost impossible to get an exact grind for both. There’s too many variables for that. She’s giving a great review of the grind and functionality of the two products. Now remove that thumbs down

Breville and Sage is the same company, but they mainly use Sage as brand in Europe and Breville in US. But some Breville branded products have made it to Europe. I work at a retailer selling Sage and Breville stuff (Swedish Dixons/Currys).
Breville (home base: Australia) had some kind of corporate branding issue or deal regarding use of the Breville name in Europe (apparently there is or was another company using Breville as a brand name there), so Breville uses the brand-name Sage in Europe. So, yep, it is the same grinder from the same company, just different branding on it.
Good review. One plus for the Smart Pro is that it sounded quieter at least, but the lack of coarser grind makes me want to stick with the Rocky :) One thing I dislike about the Rocky is that I have to abuse it pretty hard to get out the last coffee grinds. PS: You still have a very shallow dept of focus on your camera, increasing that should be doable since you have good lighting at your set.

No one buying these machines would use a grind and brew machine. These grinders start at 300 bucks not to mention the espresso machines. If you don't want glass maybe you can get a Hario hand grinder and a ceramic or glass hand pour device. Keep watching these videos.
The Smart grinder isn't 'stepped' as such, it's just that the display only shows 60 grind size values. I've found you can actually make smaller adjustments within each of the displayed values to dial in further if you adjust the dial carefully.
the adjustable burrs on the smart grinder pro dramatically increase the range of grind. I'm surprised that wasn't highlighted at the end. you're not going to change the burr every time but you might want to show folks the coarest and finest grind on the highest and lowest burr settings.
Your breville will probably break in a few years. The Rocky will last a lifetime. My only complaint with the Rocky is that my burgers seemed to wear down pretty quick. I have to grind at #3 or #2 for espresso. I am not bashing breville, just speaking from experience owning at least four different Breville espresso machines.
Always buy the Breville stuff from big box stores that offer extended warranties that way you'll get a new machine or your money back. It's too bad that Breville's QC is hit and miss and that they cut corners where it's gonna cost them FAR MORE THAN IT'S WORTH.
Skip both, spend a little more and get a Eureka Mignon Facile. Breville will most likely not support their plastic when it breaks. Bloated with technology but no substance where it counts.

The Brevill has more adjustment to the grinder by removing the bean hopper to access the upper burr

The extra adjustment is marginal and the grinder does not really like it, my one sounds sketchy when using it with the other setting

The breville also has 10 more settings inside the conical burrs too. Giving a total of 600 different settings

Your breville will probably break in a few years. The Rocky will last a lifetime. My only complaint with the Rocky is that my burgers seemed to wear down pretty quick. I have to grind at #3 or #2 for espresso. I am not bashing breville, just speaking from experience owning at least four different Breville espresso machines.

The Breville sounds underpowered
Smart Pro will last few years and then you'll have to throw it away. The Rocky will last you a lifetime and all parts are replaceable and repairable.
Always buy the Breville stuff from big box stores that offer extended warranties that way you'll get a new machine or your money back. It's too bad that Breville's QC is hit and miss and that they cut corners where it's gonna cost them FAR MORE THAN IT'S WORTH.

Skip both, spend a little more and get a Eureka Mignon Facile. Breville will most likely not support their plastic when it breaks. Bloated with technology but no substance where it counts.
Just watched this...kind of disappointed to see the bias for the Rancilio Rocky....this was not an objective review.
Not too hard to say the Rocky is a better grinder.
