I passed the video along to Don for you! He said he liked it! My father was a crew chief for Don, and I would like to thank you personally for making this video as my dad is featured in it as well. I was able to share it with my child. My dad passed in 2021 and he resides in the museum.
Thank you so much! Im heading to Florida next week do you think it would be possible to meet up with you and Don? You can email me at tunnelram393w@gmail.com Andy
I'm a FLA boy 62 years old I can remember going to gatornationals watching Dawn garlic race in the early 80s in late 90s and almost into the 2000s he's a true legend an innovators of drag racing they're still using some of the safety features he made way back in the day the true goat of Top Fuel
Merry Christmas Andy! Don is living proof that you don't have to have the most wins to be the Very Best! He's a very special man! God bless Don Garlits!
One of the biggest thrills of my life was the chance meeting Don and Pat at the Ocala Florida museum on his home property. He truly is the G.O.A.T. of drag racing in my book. Great people. R.I.P. Pat.
I saw this documentary on him. Andy, the story of Chrysler giving him a Gen II Hemi to try out and the fact he couldn't get it to run anywhere near the Gen I 392 was actually very exciting. We all know what happened so hearing the story from the man himself recounting his frustration with the 426 was enthralling. It transported me back to the time (even though I wasn't born yet). In the end he got so frustrated with the Gen II he tried to blow it up by massively advancing the timing and the rest as they say is history. Then there was the Zoomie headers vs 200MPH barrier, which was just as exciting.
The 426 story in top fuel is really interesting! the cool part is later on Don switched to the Donovan 417 old style hemi for a few years... Thanks for watching Andy
Outstanding video! Big Daddy is without a doubt the GOAT. Pioneer, innovator, and a man of God. Through his constant experimenting and developmental efforts (introducing the first successful rear engine Top Fuel dragster, engine, transmission, aerodynamic developments, etc.) he singlehandedly changed the landscape of drag racing. Every racer today owes Don a debt of gratitude.
At 65 years old, drag racing was nothing but Don. Don was the rock star of drag racing. Congratulations Don for making it through. Continued happiness and a long life.
As a kid growing up on the farm in Kansas, I was glued to the TV each year and "Big Daddy" was my favorite! 2 of my Mechanics have met him in Florida and he's a great person!
Thank you Motor Sports Garage for producing this compelling story of the incredible man known as Don Garlits. Attributing the acronym G.O.A.T. was simply a matter of time. You have created an emotional retrospective for the fans that have followed this man’s incredible career and revealed the spirit behind the innovator. Many have been successful drivers, mechanics and winners but most will never chance innovation like Don Garlits. With great respect, thank you Mr. Garlits for creating the sport of Drag Racing, making it safer and more exciting for every fan and competitor today. You are the GOAT.
Dude, Andy....this is a great documentary, not only the focus on Garlits' but the emphasis on the era where clutch explosions were the demise of Sorokins and Mulligan although Mulligan"Moe" succumbed to the burns he suffered a few weeks later and who can forget Nicolls incident in the finals a year later against Prudhomme at Indy. You did a great job on this vid and to hell with critics that have the nerve to bad mouth Don about his electric dragster....this guy is royality and indeed the G.O.A.T. He is part of my childhood in the 60's and early 70's and the best times spent with dad at the drags
Thanks for the kind words! You are exactly right Jim Nicholls clutch explosion was just crazy... Don changed Top Fuel Racing forever Thanks for watching Andy
Without question "Big Daddy" is the GOAT !!.. So many Innovations. He completely shaped modern Top Fuel drag racing. Awesome job on the documentary Andy. Well done. 👏
Petty and Garlits.. The humility these guys exude is a lesson to all winners. Big Daddy is the humblest I've seen. Great vid. Thanks for putting it togethet
I saw the "wynnsjammer" Dodge dart -vs- the Texas Tornado in Wichita KS circa 1965... That was a historic event... Partly because of the Rosin... I'll never forget that match...
Greg I hope you enjoy it! DV told me not to mess it up as he is a big Garlits fan. Hope all is well your way and I hope you have a Merry Christmas Andy
@@UnityMotorSportsGarage Thanks Andy. I just watched the video. I was planning to save it for an airline trip but I couldn't wait. It's a great video, my wife even watched it with me all the way through, which never happens with car videos.
The greatest of all time! Very well-thought-out video covering his career. NHRA has been stagnant for many years. It is fun looking back at the innovations that came out of his shop. Now it is time to do the John Force video!
7:04 In Don's book, he said he was morning testing at Byron Illinois raceway, the morning after a match race weekend, and he was going to have to give up the Dodge sponsorship, go back to the 392 hemi. Promoters thought Don was purposefully going slow to throw races, or that he was going fast at other tracks, and not theirs. Thought he advanced the timing 20°, but could have been 40°, and blow the 426 up. He saw that his crew wouldn't go near the bullet as it was idling after the burnout on the backup, sounded like it could fly apart any second, and they didn't want to get hit with the shrapnel. But the 426 liked it, and drag racing history went on.
I visited Bigs museum about 20 yrs ago. I'm still in awe of what I saw. For me way better than Disney World and much cheaper. He IS the G O A T for sure.
I had the privilege of meeting him a couple times. He helped me get a spot on the Super Chevy Show tv spot on ESPN2 back 20 years ago. We had built a trick using a complete drive line from a C5 corvette. He said that thing is awesome. He got on it and we took pictures but unfortunately I have lost my pictures of that event. I have friends that took some too. I'll try to get those. But I did post the video of the ESPN2 event on my page.
That is really wild! Because I met him at a Super Chevy show as well back in 90's I was like 15 at the time. I hope you like the video Thanks for watching and I hope you have a Merry Christmas Andy
No one close to Big Daddy, for the GOAT. So many innovations and engineering advances. And a great human!!! Got to talk to him, twice at Pomona...but just for a short time. Left a big impression. God bless, Don.

In the late 60s, early 70s my good buddy spent every dime on drag racing. Our home track was Great Lakes Dragway in Union Grove Wisconsin. For me the best part was walking the pits between races. At one in particular Big Daddy was changing a piston between heats as we chatted. What a time in drag racing history!! Makes me emotional just remembering the great time!😊
That was well done !! Lots of footage i've never seen before and a pretty good look at his career, You'd never know Don was as old as he is. Truly is the greatest.

Such an innovative and talented, but most of all humble racer. He was there from the beginning making the sport more exiting and safer race after race.
