- Holman-Moody conquered the tracks in NASCAR but also became synonymous with precision engineering.
In the late 1950s and throughout the 1960s, Holman-Moody became a force to be
reckoned with in NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing). The team's
success on the track was inseparable from Ford Motor Company's desire to dominate the series, and Holman-Moody was the de facto Ford "Factory Team" in NASCAR. Their meticulous approach to engine building contributed significantly to the team's numerous victories and championships. One of those defining moments came in 1965 when Holman-Moody built engines powered Ned Jarrett's Ford to victory in the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. This triumph solidified their reputation as a master engine builders and
showcased the technical superiority of Holman-Moody engines.
While Holman-Moody made a name for itself in NASCAR, Ford's ambitions extended
beyond American soil, so team ventured into international competitions, including
endurance racing events like the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Holman-Moody engines powered Ford
GT40s to victories at Le Mans in 1966 and 1967, marking historic moments in motorsport history.
Holman-Moody also produced some of the greatest engine builders to torque a set of rod bolts - Keith Dorton, Waddell Wilson and Robert Yates.
I have a 1961 Ford Galaxie Starliner. It has one of the 500 ohc 427 engines that were supplied by Holman Moody. I am in New Zealand and it is unique in this country. I have waited over 40 years to find and purchase this vehicle. I will never part with it
My wife and I visited NZ several years ago and were amazed at the passion and dedication to Detroit Iron by the Kiwi's. We checked out a couple of local car shows on our travels and had some good conversations with folks. Their ears perked up when I told them that we lived near Detroit and I had worked in a Ford factory assembling cars on the production line in the 70's. Good times.
I've got a single plane Holman -Moody four barrel intake manifold for the Ford 240/300 six that was intended for boat racing.
Cool. Post a picture.
@@jesse75 How can he post a picture? Is it even possible?
@@alext8828 ever heard of utube before ?
I occasionally make comments on DragBoss's utube channel.
I came across a set of unusual Cleveland heads.
I posted a picture on Craigslist so that he could see them.
Or maybe the guy has a FB account.
Wow! Seven days a week. I’ve heard the names Holman and Moody my whole life but never knew anything but that they built engines. These videos are treasures of history. Thank you.
Thanks!
Keith Dorton is an absolute genius and I’ve had the pleasure to work side by side with him at Bonneville. Some of the best times in my career.
Absolutely!
This is historical information. We are getting it first person. Incredible. Gotta get that book.
Thanks!
WOW, what a fortunate man to have experienced a piece of Americana on this level. Back in 1965 , a friend of mine from Charloette, N.C., owned a 1964 Mustang convertible with the 289. He was of wealth, his dad owned Pic & Pay Shoes (not sure of the spelling but there was a store in Salisbury, MD and Melvin was the manager. He was the son of the owner). Either that summer or the next ( I am 75 so please excuse), he had a Mustang that sounded like the most bad ass Chevy V-8 with spoked wheels on the front which would lift the front wheels. Impressive. He and his family bragged how Holman & Moody did the engine. Am I the guy to say false? It did pick up the wheels with a 289 under the hood and the rear ratio was not the reason. Holman and Moody knew their stuff!
Ford's outside racing shop. Legends of Ford racing.
I rebuild a set of Holman-Moody 429 BOSS head when I worked in a machine shop. The heads had 2 plugs per camber and the intake runners had epoxy on the floor for more velocity!
Very cool!
diehard FORD fan here! LOVE YOU FORD! thanks Holman -Moody!
This guy is sharp I could listen to him for ever
Absolutely!
Keith Dorton is a legend. Not as well known to outsiders as Waddell Wilson, Robert Yates, Jack Roush, or John Kaase. But well respected.
I was employed with Bill Stroppe in Long Beach for 4 years in early 80's...one day they rolled in this big tool box with a funny name lettered on it "Lujie Lesovsky"...next day this little old man that looked a lot like an old shoe cobbler showed up for work, put on an Indiana Oxygen Apron and started fiddling about on one of the race trucks...after watching him work for a few weeks, I asked him if he could help me with my fender on my motorcycle...that began a 12 year mentoring until his passing...taught me almost everything I know and he always enjoyed a dirty joke... Bob Santoro
Good memory
He is right about the marine division success. Holman-Moody engines went into a ton of boats.
Ed's in the video about Vic Edelbrock and Ed Iskenderian
@@EngineBuilderHallofFame They made engines for Century and Donzi from what I remember? Big and small block Ford engines with and custom exhaust risers.
I remember when Holman Moody was at the top of Shell Hill in the city of Signal Hill. It became Bill Stroppe Enterprise.
BTW, this video is a nice break from the utter insanity of current times...
back in the day if you saw the h/m logos and the competition proven decals on Fords you knew they were the real deal
Waddell Wilson was on Dale Jrs show and said he made $1.50 at their shop and did work everyday.
I'm a Native American diehard Ford racing fan and Holman-Moody has such a Rich History in racing in both NASCAR with the Ford Galaxie's and in Endurance racing with the Ford GT40!
those Holman-Moody GT40's were so BadAss!❤️🏁 you just earned yourselves a New Subscriber!
How Kool the story from those who were there. I cannot believe the hours you all worked and still kept up the quality. Why didn't they hire more people? Was it because there were not enough capable of the work?
Check out the Holman -Moody nostalgia race Mustang here on UA-cam...

Does anyone know if Tommy Turner started at Holman Moody? One of the underrated but great engine builders in racing.
Weren't they involved in NASCAR's Compact Class ? I seem to remember them working on a 1960 Valiant for Marvin Panch.
Great video.
Just subscribed to your channel. 👍👍
Thanks for the sub!
FYI; Le Mans 24 Hours & Monte Carlo winter road rally were two entirely different events.
I liked and subscribed 👍
Thanks!
The only ford team that could really give them a real fight on there hand was the woods brothers
Back in the Y block days 😂
They were FEs , no Y blocks after about 1960.
@@oneninerniner3427Y blocks were still being built and modded by holman moody into the 60s, Gotta remember they started in 1955
