Loved the bit about the band saw. Thanks for that.
Retropower are of cource incredible fabricators, but also hugely impressing is their immense knowledge of tools and especially old tools. I’m just in awe every Sunday ❤
Makes me happy to hear so many others are in love with old tools like I am.
Yes I’ve still got a few of my late Father’s and grandfather’s pre WW2 tools but not their bigger farm tools. Do you go to farm sales?
Great Vid, seeing the power hacksaw took me back, used a Wicksteed, for years, had 2 speeds and we sang 2 different tunes to the rhythm of each speed😂, treat it nice and it will outlast you….old is best👍
With regards the CNC bed suction. We found MDF to be porous which reduced the grip, so we gave the boards a coat of primer. Result!
I’ve seen that porosity used to be the vac bed on a machine routing uPVC, fix the MDF down, then mill all over to true. The PVC had a shipping foil which needs removing on the vac side.
bobby clamps i'm sure i used them as an apprentice on ford mud gaurds love the show
Yes. Perfect Sunday viewing
Love the saw. Used one like it for years, maybe a Fellows.
That saw is a thing of beauty 👌 my place of work have had a new band saw at the cost of nearly 20k. I'd take that old beauty any day, it'll definitely out last it!
The trick with under seal etc. is to heat enough for the metal underneath to stay hot while you leave the underseal to skin over, but underneath stays soft. Feels like it takes longer but is actually quicker as the full scraper width peels off cleanly with less residue.
So many interesting subjects in this vlog. The Band saw, Mk 1 Escort, BMW 3 series Audison amplifier setup (I was once a dealer for them). Awesome information
the explanation about the features of the Scimitar are spot on, trying not to take away from the style, a wider rear quarter/arches, cleaner tucked taillight setup, but overall features, front clip, windows, roofline, and body lines all need to stay. Its too unique.. personally i think the low stance takes away from it, maybe put an inch back in the rear and see how it fairs up? but thats just my own personal look of the car. BRILLIANT !!!
That band saw is a gem, hope your going to paint it up.
(Not wrapped ha ha!)
@@philtucker1224 you could paint it brown and mount a bulls head on it (for bobby)
@@RW-bi2rp 😁👍
As I understand it those Ford 1/4 bumpers were robbed off the rear of the Thames Anglia van, which is probably why they don't quite fit!
Now you’ve mentioned that I think I can still remember them! 😁
There is a reason why the Escort front quarter bumpers don't follow the bodyline. They were originally robbed by Boreham for the Type 49 Twin Cam bodyshell from the Ford parts bin and were originally fitted to the rear corners of the 307E Anglia van and the later Escort Mk I van. Nothing (IMHO) defines a performance Mk I better than those quarter bumpers. Even the Mk II followed that design cue.
Yeh ☕️in hand feet up best part of Sunday night 👍🏻😉
I’ve used dry ice blasting for undercoating removal.
Comes off in flakes instead of goo.
Work a small area, like you do with the heat gun. Works best on a cold car outside on a cold day.
Dry Ice is quite expensive and hard to get hold of in the UK compared to the US for some reason. People have set up companies doing dry ice engine bay and underbody cleaning, but it’s so expensive it’s basically limited to people with ££££££ classics.
Cracking saw that!
The upswept rear window give a nice haunch to the rear quarter, which was a bit lacking on the original Scimitar
Always loved the Scimitar shape, apart from one thing. In profile it always looks like the doors should be a bit longer. Moving that B pillar trim back would make a world of difference to my eye.
love the re-imagining of the rear window shape too.
Cal that GTE is stunning in its mock up scans
Has a look of XJS Eventer about it not that that's a bad thing ,but subtle changes make a great deal of difference, last week shades of P1800es this week a growler!....
The Jensen still looks awesome, upgraded even better ! Nice work !
No, it was a Qualters and Smith. marvellous!
Nat what size are the blades for the saw, Im sure I have a few in the garage new that I dont have a machine to fit, gladly send them foc if any use ?
It's amazing how the interior of the Camaro looks like an Escort. ;-)
Another great video , love the hemi interceptor. Just that name ….😂❤
I used to have an old Manchester hack saw when I used to make wrought iron. About half the size of that.👍
Matts scraping job must be mind numbing. Head down and get it done I suppose. That saw!?! Bargain of the year. Will last forever!!! Great find.
Still hoping for baby shit brown for Allegros.
Alchemy fellas. Brilliant
That’s what the fresh grind coffee machine they have is for. Get totally wired, then put your headphones on and zone out on the boring jobs.
Porsche Grigio Campovolo is a rare colour even in the Porsche world.
I know as I have a 1 of 1 RS in the UK in that colour.
It will look epic on that M3 👍
heads up with your CNC router... when parts have been cut 1 pause remove the part than put some plastic sheet over were the part would sit or 2 cover the part that has been cut with plastic sheet to keep the vacuum at as low pressure as poss so it will keep the suction pressure on the other parts that need cutting if you get what i mean ... used to do this sort of a thing for a living making gaskets
Old tools always the best. Beasts yes, but good.
It sure looks like from the USA (lol) you guys need a larger facility.
On the Scimitar, and personally I love the look of the redesign of those windows.
The original shape has a whiff of Volvo P1800 Shootingbreak… which is no bad thing in my opinion.
Mark needs to be in Hollywood!
My power hacksaw in my machine shop is over seventy years old and is one of the best investments i made forty years ago. Because its old it doesn't mean its not useful anymore and it cuts arrow straight every time like everything you just have to look after them.
Hit the nail on the head! Would need an expensive horizontal bandsaw to hold as square a cut as a power hacksaw, cheap or old bandsaws never cut straight enough, and I don’t want an expensive saw to use a couple of times a month and probably have to live in a corner or outside
Love the tangents Nat. Would love to share a pint or two with you just for your yarns.🇦🇺🇦🇺
You've done a lot of work. Nice old sawing machine.
We'd never be allowed to use the cool old machinery simply because the insurance won't cover work accidents involving the older non 'CE' marked equipment in a work place with more than one employee.
Here such tools are home use only or one man band businesses
Yes and evidently the new compliant versions are about 18k !
Adjustable Escort bumpers well I never…. Love the way you adapt to anything such as programming ECU to sound signal tuning.
Please please please show some footage of how you mount the XJC to the rotisserie at the rear, I am about to make one to mount mine and would love some point of reference to work to.
They had one of those in my school metalwork shop back in the 80s. It was old then
Now you’ve got the old saw working, for gawd’s sake give it a lick of paint!
There is a tangential advantage of the machine hacksaw, the old blades make very good scraper blade. If you use the ends there is a nice hole to bolt the scrap to a wooden handle.
The attention to detail, on every car, I just wish I had the $$ to send my 85' corolla to you guys to get it "Restomoded " !! or, just watching your channel, do it myself by learning !! :)
Hi all, just wondered what will the Allegros be registered as, Austin or Honda?
Great work and great skill sets, pushes me to try and up my game lol😂
I've got to make a rotissery for Mini's (the original ones) - how do you make the mounts beefy enough to support the car, yet light enough to lift? Do you work out the forces or is there a '2" box always works' type rule? Never had or used one before, but I'm getting too old to lay on the floor these days.
That mechanical hacksaw is superb, the 'Earth worm Jim' act was hilarious.
Having restored a Mini replacing every panel below the window line I would suggest you make sure the door apertures and between the B posts are cross braced before slinging the bodyshell on a rotisserie. I am old enough to remember rolling minis bodyshells onto mattresses on their sides so found out the hard way how they close up.
For the money I would suggest buying the ready made ones from Automotive Handling Solutions in Baldock. I had one and it saved a lot of grief and time. I paid £400 for mine new and sold it 2 years later for £300 to a neighbour.
@@1chish Cheers for the response, it certainly isn't my first Mini, inch box bracing is life. My Dad (RIP) used to use tires on the A, B and C pillar instead of a matteress haha - they were track cars though in the 80's - it is how I learnt to weld. I'm more interested in making the tool, it is just box tubing welded with castors - I wanted to know RP did the fixtures - calculated or not.
"In the depths of scimitar" *giggles like a teenager*
Adjustable Escort bumpers well I never…. Love the way you adapt to nothing such as programming ECU to sound signal tuning.
Badass cars
I would have cut the Allegro in four and put 100mm fillets in would have still looked like an Allegro and would leave people scratching there heads yes you would have to make new screens but thats doable
I totally agree, said it before those arches look like some old 4x4 arches
And why not ,after all issigonis did just that with the Morris Minor..
Yeah the big arches look bobbins sorry they just don't work,it would have been cleverer to widen it to suite the width of the Honda
Would love to see rotating lights on the scimitar 😊
@RetroPower Question: can you recommend a company to supply a Manta 400 bodykit in the UK for a delivery to the Republic of Ireland?
Finding a website online that doesn't look like it's from the 90's or isn't abandoned looking is proving really difficult. I have found a site in Poland but apparently the kits are really poor.
Ty in advance if you read this.
Escorts and Minis. Bumper delete.
The only thing that comes to mind in terms of bumpers is what chip foose always does, reducing the gap to the car body to a minimum and make them sit super tight. Otoh any ding of course goes straight through to the car skin then… I guess you just don’t ding a car like this.
Agreed. Chip has an extraordinary talent for making changes that really improve the car. Mind you, this mob isn't too bad either....
most varied, interesting, & informative episode in at least six months; mega!
I work at an engine remanufacture company and they prefer the older machining tools for their bulk and reliability, and they still work a lot better than you newer machines
Jamie, at 30:55 the wrong clip has been inserted. Cal talking about Camaro but you put a clip of Project One speaker.
The upside down rear screen on the 3D Scimitar model looks very much like the rear screen on a P1800 estate, which in my opinion isn't a bad thing.
The “old” saw has history, something your Chinese tool will never gain because it will be knackered in short time.
Question for Nat, at what point does metal fatigue become a problem when working a complex shape into a panel?
Have you considered building your headlights from scratch? I have a pair of Morimoto 2" Bi-Leds with pivot pilot halo turn signals/DRLs to n a custom alloy shroud fixed to my TVR Chimaera. Removes the useless 7" headlights and gives a clean modern look
When I was an apprentice they were called donkey saws
Don’t tell Damien Hirst…
To me it seems unfair you charge the customer for a tool you need to do a job, IE: the rotisserie, especially when the job is finished you keep it.
With regard to you new/second hand saw WHEN a saw blade breaks or goes blunt don't throw it away with a bit of grinding they can make excellent workshop knives or scrapers, I have one I made in the late 60's and it still works today.
Striking resemblance between the Interceptor grille work/front end and the modern iteration of the Dodge Challenger.
❤ Great work .. Not so sure about the tradies commentary, they may need a script and a little more practice, but nice to see who is doing the work. Also very much enjoyed seeing the CAD department … incredible seeing what can and is being done. Whilst I do love all that you do, I can’t help wondering what the budget of the average builds is. Take the Jensen for example, £75,000 ?
Try two or three times that and you'll be closer.
@@DuncSmith Hi Duncan … Your guess or Your development car?
@@JACB006 Based on the previously discussed project budgets (Vader Chevette was £200k+, Utah was similar).
@@DuncSmith OK … Did you see the “skipschloss” UA-cam Hemi Build?
What was the name of that coffee again?😂
Do you know how the weight of the finished Mk1 Escort will compare to the original, and how does the bhp/tonne compare?
The Scimitar will look pretty “bad ass” because those wide rear haunches look seriously “wicked” 👺
Scorchio!!!
What do you do with the old engines & suspension units you change on the projects . Do you sell them or scrap them .?
£100? Jesus christ.
I bet it was something like “fifty guineas” new 🤣😂
They'd have got more in scrap for the iron and copper!
what vin number will the all agros s use honda or bmc
I find your videos and builds really inspiring. How do go about getting them on the road legally here in the U.K? Do you IVA them, or is it up to the Owner afterwards?
what is that last car on the CADD ??
Not sure about reliant windows... revised looks better, more like a hatch less like a shooting brake... but then it suddenly looks like an AMC gremlin
Are the RetroPower badges/inserts, etc, a customer choice or part of the contract for the build?
Cal the sound engineer,
Make me sound clear
🔈 🎤
I might be sticking my neck out here, but.... I'm gonna say those escort front bumpers are definitely looking upside down!
What will happen to the allegros when they are finished. Do they belong to a customer or are they for sale.
They are being built for customers, and to the customers' specs.
@@18robsmith thank you
Always customers.
Stop teasing us and get some paint on Churchill.
We are waiting for the yellow paint to show up
I’m intrigued to know why the project one owner wants such a sophisticated music system in the car so I’m speculating that it’s owned by a millionaire music producer-type person…🤔
You completely lost me with the tuning of the stereo, how can you spend several hours tuning in different speakers? great stuff as usual.
Primer grey bmw :(
Those escort bumpers are not nice.
I hate shiny primer
Are those LGBT colours in your company title?
A question, you probably know that there is a proposed law in the EU which will make it illegal to repair a car over 15 years old which has developed major faults like the engine and gearbox etc, this of course is driven by the eco loons and net zero maniacs there; but we have the same clowns in this country who will no doubt follow suit if this becomes law. Would this put you and others in the motor trade out of business..?? I mean you're part of what must be a multi multi million pound business here in the UK which in the relentless war against the motorist will be wiped out along with 1000's of jobs...
With all due respect Allen I call Bullshit on your comment. The 15 year proposal was floated by a Romanian MP as a way to incentivise car owners into newer cars with a scrapage scheme that the UK used. As the Dacia plant was in the MPs constituency and why it did not go further than the Romanian parliament, but it did make it to the Daily mail. The European Commission’s initiative seeks to "facilitate the repairs of used cars in a sustainable and responsible way", in line with EU policies "encouraging the trade of circular, sustainable and repairable products." The initiative is therefore meant to curb abuses on used car markets more efficiently, by limiting the attempts to sell vehicles with significant hidden flaws and to mitigate the current problem of UK/EU countries of exporting these cars to say Africa or other countries, which falsely improves the results. Also under EU law an organization cannot compel a company (a car service, in this case) to turn clients away, other than through the normal mechanisms of a free market and why it fizzled out with that one MP in Romania and at the start of February, the European Parliament and the European Commission also introduces the concept of “right to repair”, both within and beyond the legal guarantee, which will make it easier and more cost-effective for car owners to repair products. Instead of simply replacing a car or product with a new one. The opposite of what you are saying.
Star delta do a little more research obviously lacking in electrical knowledge
Loose Marc.................(or his input)........................ this is an easy watch CAR channel,.................. no agro............................just saying................
Have you guys got a phase meter to check the phasing on those speakers ?
Speaker manufacturing is notoriously bad at terminating the coils correctly.
Even from the same manufacturer.
