Nicely done Alyn! Was funny seeing you shake me in the intro 😂 Speaking of lenses / lens reviews I finally had the chance to review that TTArtisan 500 for deep sky work. In this so virtual world where everything remains persisted, it's hard to believe that you're now looking down at us from this sky that you seemed to love and respect that much.
Since your departure, I'm thinking a lot about how everything is so temporary. I hope your family and the people that loved you can find the necessary peace in order to handle that.

Great video! For me the decision also was an easy one, but I went for the Sigma. The size and weight is not as bad as I thought it would be, and the fact that it comes with a tripod collar because of it makes framing quite a bit easier and eliminates the need for an L-bracket. While the extra 2/3’s of a stop extra light is nice, I mainly bought it for the quality of life features like the manual focus lock and the extra dew heater retention slot. Since corner performance on both lenses is very impressive and the fact that they cost pretty much the same, the only reason not to take the Sigma is the combination of size and weight. That is always a personal decision, and I understand you for picking the Sony. For me, it does not “outweigh” the advantages ;)

Thanks for the video Alyn. Another way to try to get the raw files or even do some tests on the lens is to reach out some local astrophotography group. About your idea of the raw files' site, the server don't need to have a big memory (and cost more $$$ for this) if you put the files in some storage server like google drive, dropbox, etc and use just good quality jpg as catalog in the site with links to the big files

Nice summary. I started out with the Rokinon 14mm but didn’t like the coma and the over-wide (to me) field of view. Today I use a Nikon F 1.8 20mm with the ATZ adaptor on my Z7ii. I’m nowhere near a pro like you, but this setup works well for my skill level.

First thing on receiving a lens is take out on a star filled night and take shots at ever aperture. One lens I recommend and have used since '15 after Trey Ratcliff tested it is the APS-C lens E 10-18mm (15-27mm) f/4 OSS is excellent to this day used in full frame mode 12-18mm (18mm if you remove the light shield). Yes 12mm before anyone had one. It has treads for front filter and today you can put a filter in the rear with Haida rear lens mount. I put the Clear Night filter in the rear and use a CPL up front for fog, I do Milky Way on beaches along the ocean and even with clear sky there is always low fog. Yes f/4 but with a Sony or any digital camera f does not matter really. Back in the beginning with 500 rule it was a 30s capture for pinpoint stars.
Lastly it is very small compared to the 12-24mm f/4 or 2.8 how do feel putting the big lens on a pano rig. Also the big lens requires a upfront filter holder also the small 14mm f/1.8. And for the 6 mouths of the Milky War arc you will use a super wide for panos to get that super high arc even in July without having to do two rolls of shooting like the new 10mm f/2.8 for high up over your head stars. It has increased in cost my $100 but due to more APS-C cameras. Just think a lens made before the A7 models best for astro!! I have wondered why Sony has not made a 12mm prime for so small would be great out in the cold and darkness. Yes my 10mm f/2.8 is inbound right now so I can do arcs till the sun comes up.

Forget the 14mm 1.8. Get the 20mm 1.8 - can take filters and is just a nicer focal length.

I own both Sony 14 GM and the Sigma 14 DG DN as well as the older Sigma 14 1.8 Art. From my personal experience the Sigma 14 DG DN is a easy winner hands down. The 2/3 stop faster, the Manual focus lock, the ease of use lens heater, it just makes it a so much better lens for me. Yes heavy and big, but due to above mentioned reason i am mire than happy to carry it over the Sony. Same applied to their 20mm, i own both sony 20G and Sigma 20 dg dn and i use my Sigma a lot more than the 20G

Lots of great choices on E-mount these days, Viltrox 16mm f/1.8 is a great budget ultra wide too. Love what Sigma has bought to the table these last few years, really put Panasonic on the map for astro as most of their DN mirrorless glass is exceptional.

  • @nat-lj8kt

Sample variation can be big game changer. A good reputation lens that gets just the worst type of variation/micro tilt/shift could have you end up with one or two corners where the coma/astigmatism performance is much worse. You can shoot test charts or infinity distance landscapes but would not notice this until you shot night sky on a tracker or with 200 rule etc. As a rule of thumb, wider and cheaper lenses but also the best performing lenses are hit worse by sample variation usually. Standard lenses are usually much safer but with wide & ultrawide lenses, one should beware always. Think 300$ Rokinon/Samyang 14mm 2.8 lens. High performance, cheap and ultrawide (if you get a good copy otherwise could be pretty average but still groundbreaking 10 years ago in its prime).

This was all one long ad for MPB lol.... but it's ok cus I like and use them too haha. My main lenses are Sigma Art 35mm 1.4 and 24mm 1.4 but I'm 3 for 3 in getting good quality Rokinon/samyang lenses too. Got a decent 24 before upgrading to the art and a nice 14mm for fun and a great 85mm for pano and general. I've heard it can be hit and miss but so far, haven't missed. Good bang for your buck lenses really. For night photo, you have to use the manual fringe correction to remove the purple though, but other than that, decent all around...at least for secondary shots, casual users. It will take hundreds of shooting experience before someone can be held back by a rockinon/samyang... once you are, you'll know. If you don't understand how it's holding you back.... you're not there yet.

Hi Alyn, I wonder if you might consider doing a video on night-time/astro-blogging cameras specifically for video on a budget. The Sony you use sounds great, but are there any cheaper alternatives? Most videos on UA-cam are about the stills aspect, but I think quite a lot of people are interested in doing similar things to your blogs - for wildlife etc as well as astro.

Lens quality also depends on what megapixel sensor used, example if you put it on A7SIII it seems very nice yea but compared then A7RIV the starquality may be a very different. I have example one Sony 1.4 24mm GM whose corners (astigmatism, coma, etc) is actualy very very poor on astromodified high megapixel sensor. Real quality of your lens cant hide behind big pixel cameras. ;)

Great Information and tips Alyn.....You look great, and I hope your Feeling Better after surgery Alyn. It takes awhile to get back into your grove. But, you look well on your way. I am a huge Ebay-aholic, and I have had hits and misses honestly over the years. I shoot both Daylight and Astrophotography, so I like Lenses that can serve both Disaplines if possible....Over the years I have learned who to buy from, and now I have had very good experiances. I am always on a budget, so I am very keen to get the best bang for the buck I can get. I am primarily a Canon Guy, but I have now dipped into the Sony Mirrorless Ecostructure, Loving the E-mount, and the Color science. I often find myself however, looking for 3rd party lenses to make up for the variance in Quality I find from the manufacturers, and just to save money. I Really like Sigma Lenses for my Astrophotography, I get what I am looking for 9 times out of 10. The Sony branded Zeiss Lenses I am very impressed with, just wish they weren't so ungodly expensive. Because of this I am often going for the cheaper Sigma lenses again. I know Sigma isn't perfect, and Variances in Manufacturing also creep in from time to time. To that end however, you right...The Lens has to suit your Style and what you shoot. Can't wait to see you back in the field again, and hope your recovery continues to be speedy. I am a UA-camr also and I proudly support your channel and really enjoy your content. Thank you for being Honest, forthright and Inspirational to all of us, It greatly helps.
