    So, I've actually done a fair amount of research on this knife. I'm a diver and was planning on doing some shark dives (unfortunately the opportunity fell through.) From my understanding, this knife was designed to inject a large amount of gas into an attacking shark's body cavity. Sharks rely on neutral buoyancy to maintain particular depths. Injecting a large amount of gas would make the animal much more buoyant and immediately force it to the surface, thus ending the attack. I'm not sure its ever been used for it's intended purpose but I imagine it would work fairly well assuming you got a good amount of penetration into the sharks side.

      It strikes me as one of those things that's good in theory but probably not all that good in practice. Firstly shark skin is pretty tough and stabbing forcefully underwater isn't as easy as you'd hope so decent penetration might be an issue, add to this the fact that apart from the underbelly they've got thick muscles along the back and flanks so your chances of reaching the internal cavity aren't great (the bigger the shark, the bigger this problem becomes). Secondly the shark is most likely to attack from the blind side grab an appendage and then shake violently which could render your ability to retaliate improbable if not impossible. Thirdly, if you manage to get the knife in deep enough while the shark is thrashing about in a frenzy it's going to be awfully difficult to hold onto the handle let alone manipulate the charge release and stop it popping out under the pressure of the discharge, you haven't got anything to brace against unless you're pinned to the deck or against rocks.
      I don't doubt that if it all went to plan and worked as designed that it'd be devastating but I'm not sure I'd trust my safety to those variables. I'm sure a better course of action would be getting some coaching on shark behaviour so you could recognise the danger signs and get back to the boat before a dangerous situation developed, prevention is always better than cure.

    The gas leaking from the handle is because the first test you did compromised the integrity of seals. The ballistics gel was too strong and most of the gas was forced back through the knife, so the knife would never perform as intended after that first test.

    They aren't meant for stabbing into ballistics gel, they are meant to be stabbed into a body cavity. The gas does two things: inflates the body cavity with a gas, causing the shark to float away and inhibit it's ability to swim, and detach muscle groups from the side walls of the cavity you punctured. In a human, you would cause the body cavity to pressurize, not only making it impossible to draw breath, but potentially rupturing softer organs by the drastic increase in pressure on them.

      It should work just fine with ballistics gel actually.
      The problem is I think his ballistics gel mix is a bit too thick/too cold. The knife shouldn’t have had as much trouble as it did penetrating it, even if it was dull.
      I think if he had a more ideal ballistics gel mix we would have seen a bigger cavity from the gas. It can be a pain in the ass to get an ideal gel mix and temp. It’s one of the big downsides to it in general. Tests are only really accurate for a limited amount of time as heat or cold interact with the physical properties

    interesting thing about this that I'd wish was easier to test, is it's not necessarily mean to go deep, it's supposed to just get right under the shark's skin, so that when you push the button, it creates a cavity between the skin and the rest of the body, it also freezes certain portions causing more damage

    • @konversion

      Maybe also it puts CO2 into the bloodstream as well? I mean, that's the exact opposite of gases our biology needs. Regardless, these tests don't look like they'd feel good, ballistics gel just has limitations as a flesh alternative because (correct me if I'm wrong) it's designed for weapon impact and its effects.

Further the above water tests all allow easy release of the CO2. Underwater it gets trapped expanding more violently and has a second shockwave which does the actual damage.

  • @Maceman486
    @Maceman486 2 роки тому

    From what I understand about blades is that we have certain designs we regularly see on them because of their use on other humans and animals. Things with muscles like ours. When we get our flesh punctured our muscles clamp down on it to prevent it going in farther and so they don't get pulled out so there's less of a chance of us bleeding out. So flat blades like a table knife don't work as well as something with curves or a groove in it to allow the passage of air to break the muscle seal so we can pull it out and stab again more easily. If you are wanting to create an air explosion inside something or someone then that non-flat design works against you as the air just seems to be pushing backwards to the handle.

    • @lancerd4934
      @lancerd4934 2 роки тому

      Not how it works. Muscles only pull in one direction. If a flat blade is oriented in a way it could be clamped down on, the edge will have severed all the muscle fibres that would have been in a position to squeeze it. The muscle contractions you allude to restricting blood flow occur within major blood vessels, not across a whole skeletal muscle. Also, there's no seal or suction with an object penetrating the body. The only time things get "stuck" is when they get embedded into bone or connective tissue, where there's just a lot of friction. Blade designed with grooves, more than two edges etc are generally either just trying to reduce weight, or they're doing it for aesthetic reasons.

    There's a problem here with keeping a seal. The reason it's not working is because the ballistics gel and the melons have sealed insides, but that means the air goes right out the stab hole. The reason it works so well on living things is a body naturally forms a seal around the knife, and a pocket of air can be formed INSIDE the body. Finding a way to seal the hole you are stabbing in is key

    • @lancerd4934
      @lancerd4934 2 роки тому

      A living body can also deform to accommodate the gas volume. It also doesn't "seal" anything. tissue will just move out of the way and the gas will slowly leak back out the hole. For comparison, the gas volume released from this thing at atmospheric pressire (ie not underwater) is about one human lungful. Alternatively to trying to hold a knife in a moving, resisting body for the several seconds it takes to discharge this thing, you could just... stab a bunch more times.

There’s actually a cloud of gas that pops back out towards your hand. Very little of it creates a penetration of the gel. You probably don’t feel it come back out because of the hilt. Honestly, with it being essentially a devoted shark knife, I think that the manufacture is hedging its bets on the fact that there aren’t going to be many people with the time, money, and opportunity to put this product to the test, and even fewer that will survive to report a bad design (if it is such).
    It doesn’t make for a good general purpose knife, comes with a large price tag (and it should come with a good sharp blade at this price point), has an ultra niche purpose, and using it in self defense would give prosecutors a field day (they’ll claim possession for criminal intent because you used an expensive, purpose built tool outside of its intended purpose/environment. You may or may not be guilty of that, but you’ll definitely end up with some expensive legal fees proving it.) on top of that, you exposed a gas leak in less than 1 meter of water. The CO2 cartridge may have been seated improperly, but it’s still disappointing. $200 air soft guns have much better seals and are more complex in their design. At $600, it should be designed to be “dummy proof” (ie should be designed so that it can’t be locked in at all if not seated properly).
    I’m not sure about the physiology of sharks, so rapidly injecting them with CO2 may be an effective defense, but I think the main function of this knife is separating money from peoples wallets.

  • @TxGoblin

    My biggest concern is how long will the knife hold pressure? The leaking gasses may be from seal damage from the gel test or it may be from a design fault. Years ago I got a CO2 pistol that slowly leaked its gas and was useless in a short period of time. A survival knife should be ready to use anytime. Now if the knife held a significant amount of gas for the duration of a dive then a small leak could be overlooked. However if you need to put a new cylinder in to defend with it, it wouldn't be a good tool. They had sticks designed to do this years ago. The CO2 cylinder was pierced at the time of impact and the gas passed thru a heavy duty needle into the shark thus disabling it with little effort. A knife wouldn't be as good of an option as it has the potential to cause more blood in the water that would attract more sharks. This is a very expensive gadget that I wouldn't trust my survival on.
