Because we have a long history of ignoring the potential criminal acts of highly placed people, especially the President. Nobody prosecuted Nixon (Watergate) or Reagan (Iran/Contra) H.W. Bush (falsely presenting a case for invading Iraq and unseating Saddam Hussein who, though a bad man, had nothing to do with 9/11). We've never prosecuted this behavior and the result was that Trump, an obvious narcissist, felt emboldened to do what he did on January 6th. Nixon should have been indicted and tried, if that precedent had been in place, I doubt Trump would have dared to instigate an insurrection if there was a chance he'd go to prison for it.
