Between the lyrics of Neil's "Nothing But a Heartache" arises such depth of despair, loneliness, and confusion as Doug draws us into at least 49 images to portray these intense feelings and emotions.
0:08 opens with an empty chair and guitar signifying the complete loneliness of a performer. 0:40 - (image in motion) "Like I took on the whole world" - A spinning world on the right of Neil's image giving movement to the video. 0:55 - "Was a one way conversation" - 1:00 "I never got the invitation" - This 'one way conversation' is reflected in the woman's image to the right of the screen with camera lights on her indicating her dominance. (Neil's image is subdued on the left of her.)l
Then at 1:14 - "...I tried to be forgiving" - The spotlight turns to Neil's image. 1:18 - "But getting by don't mean you're living" -Neil's three images of him posing in different directions denotes confusion. 1:22 - "And on that highway going nowhere" - Doug shows the end of the road stopping in the middle of the desert. 1:30 - "Was an exit overdue" - Here Doug inserts the word EXIT at the end of the highway. 1:33 - And all she had to give was heartache" The woman looking away aloof with her hand on her cheek and not caring. (This image of her is purposely prepared in Kodachrome to showcase the darkness of that time. 2:16 - "Felt alone and unattended" This is the turning point of the song and the start of a spark in Neil's life as he encounters Katie. 2:21 - "Said my prayers and reached my hand out" - 2:25 "And you appeared to me that day" - Beautiful beaming Katie with her positive outlook and engaging smile is to the right side of Neil. Doug captures the exuberance of a new day at 2:31 - " and lead me to a new shore" - A beach scene brimming with vibrant colours. 3:17 - 3:33 (Instrumental and actual moving video) - Doug uses intense light with Neil and Katie to the left of the beach scene to signify love, truth and happiness. 4:06 - 4:09 - "Just the two of us together and does forever sound ok?" 4:16 - 4:27 - "Say yes it does, say yes it does, oh yes it does". The beach scene gets brighter. 4:44 (Final scene) - The backsides of Neil and Katie walking down a tree-lined path with a bright light at the end of the path. (Below the image, Doug inserts the lyrics, 'Just the two of us together, does forever sound ok?' (from 4:06 - 4:09)

Hi Doug, how are you? Again you posted a great song, I have the ‘original’ already om my playlist. But….why are you so harsh on Rae? Was it all that bad, why did it last 12 years living together? He sure was in a position to get away from this ‘toxic’ relationship. He had the fame, the voice and music, the looks and money. I am a fan of you Dough, I like your work and appreciate all the effort you put in it. But I find this .. ney. Such a nasty first part of the song put on Rae. I am not good at making links so if you want please look up “Neil Diamond interviewed on enough rope”. Eight years together at that time and he praises Rae to heaven.
On a more positive note: do you know the song “Talking optimistic blues (Good day today)” . A pearl, to start your day with this song when you already know that your day is going to suck. Cheers you right up.
Another thing I found and is very funny is a piece of The Big Bang Theory, a sitcom surely also known in Australia. You can find that under “Amy and Howard sing Neil Diamond the Big Bang Theory”.

Hi Diana, It is _always_ my sole intention to never be judgemental but to reflect the _facts_ as they are, and as such, I do not normally engage in discussion. I leave the naval gazing to the various Facebook Neil Diamond Fan sites. Just not my cup of tea. All too time consuming; I have better things to do with my time... like being productive.
I have _always_ endeavoured to do justice and be true the words of Neil's songs and mentions he has made over the years in interviews. Perhaps you haven't clicked on the *Show more* link beneath this video or read the interview that Neil and Katie did with Chrissy Illey (2017).
Worth noting that the Andrew Denton interview was in *2004* Neil and Rachel separated in *2008.* I am aware of what transpired during those 4 years. I have no desire to elaborate. I’ll leave it at that.
Finally, being an Australian as Rachel is, I have no wish to be “nasty” towards her. Fact, the relationship didn’t work out. Sad, but a fact.
