Katie, you are so sweetly down to earth. I so enjoy your videos. You always put a smile on my face. I am in highschool and you just inspire me greatly. I really appreciate when you show the highs and the lows. Btw I always love seeing your outfit inspo too haha 😂 love it. Thanks so much for all you do !!
I love your videos! You are an inspiration to me! This is my 26th year of teaching! I have learned ideas from you! I teach in Kentucky! What inspired me the most is you reading your Bible! I am a Christian! I need to read my Bible more! Thanks for your videos! I am also Pastor’s kid! Keep sharing!
Aww thanks Rhonda! I have family in Kentucky, beautiful state! And yes, reading my Bible in the morning is so important to help me become more like Christ each day! ♥️
Great vlog! In our curriculum, we used an OPEN hand for open syllable and a CLOSED fist for a closed syllable. They begin learning this is first grade. It's not my favorite curriculum, but that's how it's used for those types of syllables.
I use Mentor Sentences by Jivey with my first graders to teach grammar and add other activities to go along with it. She’s on teachers pay teachers. I use the mentor text to teach writing and comprehension.
Hi Katie. 👋. Can you tell me where your Weekly Language Review is from? We are off today with our first snow day in NJ. I’m binging with your videos! 😃
Thank you for your videos! I always enjoy them. You might have mentioned before, but what do you use for your science and social studies curriculum? Ours take so much time to do. Also, we don’t use the grammar section of our curriculum. I know you may not have much time, but the Not So Wimpy Teacher grammar units are awesome and they don’t take too much time to do;)
Some of my teammates love the Not So Wimpy Teacher grammar as well!! I’ll have to give it a shot! We have Houghton Mifflin Harcourt edLearning for science and we use resources my team has acquired for social studies, not quite a set curriculum but teach the standards in units
Curious about what app your school uses for dismissal. Our school is struggling with getting a good routine for release that does not cause a traffic jam. Most of our students are picked up and Pre-K-12th dismissed almost simultaneously. Only Middle school and high school have a 15 min delay from the littles.
Do you think the pixel bricks are okay for 1st graders? Im in need of some new stem toys but im wondering if it would be too hard for them to pop on & off.
All primary language teachers in FL need the reading endorsement! I'm certified ELA 6-12 and am preparing to take the certification exam. I've been teaching ELA for 20+ years and am completing this for my last recertification!
@@mrs_katie_in_elementary Absolutely! I lead a high school academy for students who want to be teachers. You'll be pleased to know that they have a year-long project to follow an education blog/vlog, and I have several following you!
@@bonniewatkins6770 oh my goodness that is so sweet! What a fun project for them that is both informative yet connects to their generation! They are lucky to have you as their teacher ❤️
What if you have a learner who thinks the first syllable is "fi" instead of "fin"? They would pronounce the first i as a long vowel. How do you explain to them that the first syllable is closed? Why couldn't it be open?
There are always exceptions to the rules. I taught second grade for 36 years. I would explain that if you're unsure of the vowel sound, such as in final or finish, try it both ways to see what sounds right and makes sense. Typically, that's what most adults do when we come across an unfamiliar word.
A bottle typically lasts a week and a half-ish… we have a Keurig but I am a cold coffee gal! Honestly I wasn’t a coffee person at all until like a year and a half ago! When winter rolls around I might attempt warm coffee again, I don’t hate it, just prefer cold!
@@mrs_katie_in_elementary Good to know. I like cold brew as well, but wasn’t for sure if a bottle would last me all week. I will have to try it! Thanks!
Yes! I talked about it in this video! We read texts and practiced finding the main idea and key details and did open and closed syllable practice like I showed on the paper 😊
I homeschool and something I've been realizing as I teach my son who is in first grade is not only how horrible the english language is🤪 why we use ph for the f sound is beyond me. I just never thought about the english language until my son started asking why. But something else I'm learning is why are we teaching kids things that we just don't use in everyday life. I'm not judging either, I'm seriously wondering where the whole nonsense words came from, learning syllables, open and closed words. I was actually trying to bring the school into my home for him and started asking myself, why? Some things I really understand teaching him, math and English is so important, but I'm wondering why we're teaching kids things that don't actually apply to real life.
I homeschool too and I think the open/closed syllables would def help understand where to say a long or short vowel. I don't remember learning that but I can def see how it would help with phonics.
English is so tricky for sure! The idea is to teach kids how to break words apart to build their decoding skills! Any new/unfamiliar word they come across they can attempt to decode with the phonics skills and knowledge they have! Building readers and decoding skills rather than pushing for just word memorization
Ahh! It makes more sense now. Thank you for explaining that. One more question, if people reply to old videos, do you respond to them? I know some UA-camrs don’t, so I’m just curious. I’m binging your channel as I just feel drawn to your teaching style and your personality. Your a Christian too, so it makes it a little easier to relate to you. I have some questions though as I watch them, but if you don’t then that’s not a problem. Do you ever think you’ll go back to 1st grade or no? Oh, and something you mentioned was wanting to know what we wanted to see more of from you. I think it would be cool to see more of your day in the life outside of teaching. 😊
@@lisaerin85 of course!! Comment away and I’ll respond as soon as I can! 😊 Thanks for watching and reaching out to connect in comments! Not sure if I’ll ever go back to first or if I’ll stay in third 🤷🏻♀️
Please don't take away the library from all of the kids! Those who love to read should still be able to go browse and check out books and not be punished for kids who don't read. The library was always my favorite time.
I would not be taking library away, just scaling back on the privilege of going on their own for a while to review expectations and procedures for going… we go once a week as a class and they go every 5 days for special area in addition

They are a little tricky to pop off but so are legos sometimes hahaha
The pieces end up everywhere at times but my students do love them

Both!

@@ga6589 Thanks for the reply. I was actually referring to learners who are learning English for the first time. Sorry I wasn't clear.
Random question: how many bottles of cold brew do you use in a week? Do you also make coffee or just drink the cold brew?

A bottle is between $4-$5 so it’s definitely cheaper than getting drinks out everyday 🤷🏻♀️
