Very few coaches think of left handed players,we every time have to change rt to left and vice versa, you have taken both right and left handed players,a big thanks to you
You have very logical and good points and I totally agree with you. You are right it will be delayed if the person's timing of the step one is late. When you are receiving the service you have to the step one as same time as your opponent is hitting. Let say if you do not do it then it is much harder to push off. It is same as you start your car with gear 3 not gear 1. If you bring the timing of your step one forward/early then the problem you mentioned wont be there. Lee
Thank you bring your point and I do understand why you say that. The step one show on my clips are to teach players who have no idea about it. I make the step one clear and big so players can see it.
Dear sir ,your coaching very helpful. I started playing after my schooling days - a very big gap- first few days it was awful. then I have followed your videos whenever possible. before all my group members were telling this is wrong that is wrong all the time with my game. yesterday one fellow came to me and asked your skills have improved a lot, what are you doing ? congratulations Sir. all due to you and some practice videos I am following. people really underestimate when one plays bad which is very bad , they should motivate.thanks a lot. have a wonderful life.
I am most delighted to know that you have improved your level of play with my clips and futher more other people have noticed your improvement. Thank you very much for your kindest wish and I wish you and your family for wonderful life too. Lee
Hello Winston Thank you very much for your kind comment and I am very pleased to know that you feel such way with my clips. Thank you very much for posting your comment. Lee
Thanks Coach. I am just a casual player and I realized that I have made a lots of mistakes when I watched you videos. It really helped me improved a lot, thanks.
Thank you for posting you kind comment on my clips and I am very pleased to know these clips are helping you.You should fucos opponent shuttleocck but same time you should be able to see aware all of his body. If you just focus shuttlecock and nothing else it looks like you are only watching the gun and forget about thye person who is using it. you got see and focus both(all) Lee
Thank you, Sir! I’m watching this video after watching your ‘returning low serve’ video; it is good to see the 2 students practice your method here. I am very grateful for your videos. I will look for the patreon page soon.
It is not for only better balance, it is for fast push off. If you look at the players video, you will see that their two feets land same time when their opponent is hitting otherwise they can not change their direction fast. Try to study bit more , you may be able to see the reasons why it has to be done. Lee
The most important thing in that situation is not to be angry, uptighted, nor you feel must do something about it. That is why he is doing it to make you confused. You can do check smash, drop to the centre or clear to that centre. Just ignor it and play on. Lee
Yes most definatly. You have upper body and lower body and your core muscles will be able to put two together and be able you to move faster with better balance. Lee
Yes, that is very true. :) Thank you for your reply. Personally I find I like to use a half-tiptoe. My toes and ball are on the floor but my heel is lifted up a bit. Cheers, KW
@jxpowers You have to choose the spot to receieve opponent service depending on your ability. You only base very close service line if you have ability to smash opponent flick. If you can not do that then you should move your base further back to cover it. As your level goes higher you should have ability to stay bit closer to the servise line but still able to smash opponent flick. If you stay further back, you can attack flick servise but you wont be able to attack low service. Lee
I am very pleased to know that you value my clips such way. Thank you for posting your comment. Yes it is same for mixe3d and singles but after you made a shot the base you have to go will be different but the logic is same. Lee
I'm so impressed with your teaching methods, I have never seen anyone ever teach receiving a low service in doubles like this...when my club returns their normal training sessions next year I would definitely love to try this and I would come back and tell you how I did in it but I would need some practice with it first to get better. I have one question, does this only apply for doubles, what about singles and mixed doubles? there are times in singles where a low service surprisingly comes
Wow, your steps was very helpful coach. I'm always have a bad habit when returning serve from my opponent. I tried this last night when playing, surely improved my playstyle. Thanks coach Lee, will make some time to look at the other videos as well
@Guanabana51 Yes you are right player must make powerful push off otherwise he can not make speed. Just after opponent made shot so you know where to push off your body. Lee
Thanking you very much for your detailed explanation. Recently I won the local match in my hometown, with your video it is impossible. I started with zero.
So usefeul ! It's exactly this video that I need. I saw a video of my way to play ( first time ) and I almost wanted to cry how horriful that was. I need to train and know how to move on the pitch.
Hi, normally 26-7. Best tention is different to different kind of rackets. Some take high tention and some are not. Too tight tention is not good either. It is difficult to say what tention is good as the string mashine is not all same. Also there are different ways to string. The way I do is different to other people. But if I have to say. It is similar to about 27-8. Lee
coach, the quick hop you teach is basically to prepare to move explosively. Should one hop after making a shot, or at the point just before your opponent makes contact with the shuttle?
Coach, I must tell you I participated in a tournament this week end and I realized how week my badminton was!! I will continue to follow your advises and try to get better for the next tournament.
Everyone has different ways. If someone put on their toe then they have to down first to push off but if your ball is on the floor then you can move straight way rather then go down first. Each player has their style and you have to choose your too. But remember not everyone does same way. Lee
When you receieve low service, you should try to attack it but there will be time you cannot then do other shots. But you should not try to do defensive shot first. Straight clear is better but if your opponent knows that you are doing that then you should do cross clear so your opponent have to ready for both side. You must select a shot depending on all the factors and you should be the person to do it with clear reasons. Lee
@jxpowers I am showing the point of things for viewers to see. Of course flick could be flater/faster and low servise could be much tighter. As you see the points what to do, now you have to practise and train to make your step and movement faster. If you stay that far then you should move your racket foot to move forward to return low service. It can be done but requires practice and training. Be postive and keep try until you do it. Soon you will find your self able to do it. Good luck. Lee
is it necessary to make that jerk step before going forward ?? wont it delay our shot? even if its only a fraction of a second delay ... when badminton is so fast paced..!! .. juz askin out of curiosity .. Coach Lee , please advice
Tnx coach for all ur great vids. May i ask, is there any spot or point where should i look if i am the service receiver? Or how can i tell immediately if the service will be low or flick?
Thanks coach. I have a question. What if my opponent serves back and high suddenly? Is there a different foot work to go back and take the serve. And, how to decide whether smash is better option or drop on the first return for high, back serve?
If service is high then after your first step, you ned to make more steps to reach and make good timing. It is very much depending on your opponent. Their position, what they expect from you, your shot ability, how strong and how weak your part is. It is your decision with reason. Lee
The firat step is the split step where you actually dont know if the serve is low or flick thats why it is a must. Not only here but in every movement in badminton bec you dont know where the ball will go.
Thank you very much for this video, I thought this was very well done. Seeing you all explain and repeat the moves helps my brain record them, and it's great to see the net play afterwards. A question: you also show the moves for when the receiver is "too close to the service line". In what case is this move useful ? Shouldn't we pay attention and always place ourselves a bit further back, to receive a serve, so that we have room to step forward but also go backwards if needed ? Thank you, coach Lee !
This is most important question that I can think of when returning low service this way - how can I tell whether the shuttle would be ‘in’ or ‘short’ (deciding whether to take it or not)?
i'm playing against my physical education coach tomorrow and if i win i get extra credit, we finished at 2-0 advantage me before the bell rang, i need that extra credit, this video helps a lot 👍
I have a question not about the service return, but about how to deal with push returns from opponent. Given short time to react and put strength on the racket, I do mistakes like the shuttle goes directly to the front player causing kills at the net. What actions will be appropriate in this situation?
Coach Lee, I have a question. You said that your racket foot should be flat on the floor, not on tiptoes. However, when watching some of the professionals play (like Cai Yun for example), I notice their racket feet are sometimes a little tiptoed. Why is that? This is a helpful video, BTW. Thanks :) Cheers
Much appreciated coach lee. Jaz want to share, some say to figure out whether the service will be short or flick,, look at racket or the swinging motion, some say look at the shuttle. Im confused and sometimes late in receiving. Your 100% right about me guessing and rushing. How about you coach, where do you look when you are receiving the service? I also want to tell you that im improving a lot since i started following ur tips and techniques, thanks coach and goodluck!
It is depending on how early or late you are taking shots and also depending your opponent expectation of what he is expect from you at that moment. I hope this answers your question but please let me know if it does not. Lee
Hi coach Lee, I paid attention to the Start Step you mention and see the differnce. It make the receiver off balance according to my opinion. However, I still don't know why step one is that important because it looks like you just lower yourself a little bit. Is it help you to push your racket foot toward faster as well or it is just for balance ?
You need to have target. To beat someone, to be no 1 in your club, to paly a competition and win it and so on. Without target it is difficult to continue to drive your self. Set target then you have reason for training. Lee
there are many different kind of step one. Big and midium and very small depending on the situation. When you recieve service, you are right that there is not much time. therefore the step one at that time will be veryu small and fast. You may not feel you are doing it but if you looking at your self more in detail you will find out that you are doing it. Please looking at top players match every player in that level will do it as without it even when they recieve service,
@coachingbadminton ..... You might not be able to attack it but clearing it to the back or if you are good enough a drop shot from the service line would make sure that you wont lose a point because of a flick serve
Hi Coach Lee. How are you? Hope you fine. I have a question. I play mostly in double. I have one opponent like to serve high. Can you advice me best way and how to return this kind of service. Im a bit confuse better to smash or clear. Thank you Coach Lee. May GBU.
Hi Coach Lee, Thank you for the detailed steps and instructions! After adopting your method, my return rates have improved and even scoring a netkill at times! I have a question though, what if my partner is returning the service and I am behind. What kind of stance should I adopt? Thanks!
We can see on this video that the receiver stay to the net in the middle of the court after his "rush" on the service. In a mixed double has he to take the same stance ? Or has he to go back and let her partner take the net ? Sorry if there are some mistakes. I am french and i don't know the specific vocabulary :) Sincerely, Régis
Yes you are right. Mixed doubles, man has to go back and his partner should move to the net nafter man return opponent low service. There will be clip for it please look for it. Lee
Sir, I wanna ask you a question about when the opponets always serve in the right or left the court not in the middle , what is the best return ? thanks
sir i have a question.... u place yourself very close to one side of front T line to receive a serve with legs parallel.but how will i receive a serve when the opponent serves sharply and quickly to the side box.??. i will be forced to go for a backhand shot or lift.. please explain.. how to handle it..?
when you ready to receive it you should have ready grip/neutral grip and when shuttlecock is coming to your backhand side then you change grip to backhand. What posture and what kind of backhand grip is depending on how early and how late you are taking the shuttlecock. It is not possible and not right saying it should be this way as there will be many situations. Lee
@RickAstleyZ But when you see that the player flicks it over his opponent it always ends up with a point to the person that is serving. Because it is so fast, the opponent cannot move back fast enough but turns around and backhands it. the player on the opposite side simply smashes it down for an easy point
Yes, I looked frame by frame recieve service at masters. It seemed to me that they do first step, but a little non-standard. They don't lift toe. They lift the heels and the foot arch. It is one of the kind of first step?
Hi Coach Lee, thanks for your insightful tips, but please can you demonstrate how on earth this can possibly work for the dreaded drive serves? I encounter them regularly and can not handle them well. Interestingly there seem to be no one to teach drive replies and Pros don't do them, so I think they must suck, BUT I can't figure out, why...
Thank you for your good point. I have never thought about making clips on how to return drive service from opponent. I will make clips on that. Thank you very much for bring the point. I do know that many club players are finding very hard to return them. Thank you. Lee
Thank you and I am very pleased to know my clips are helping you. Kind regards

Thanks for the tips coach Lee. These are basics in badminton that i did not know. I still have a lot to learn.

best coaching with logic by lee sir. best techniques he tells
Thanking you very much for your detailed explanation. Recently I won the local match in my hometown, with your video it is impossible. I started with zero.
Hello Mr Lee, thanks for your sharing..your explanation is simple and easy to understand..thanks again!
Yes it is. With out the step one moving around court will be very slow. Lee

@coachingbadminton ..... You might not be able to attack it but clearing it to the back or if you are good enough a drop shot from the service line would make sure that you wont lose a point because of a flick serve
Great tip. I will definitely try learn this
The best Badminton coach ever

Thanks for this. This move is what i was missing all this time
You are most welcome. I hope this works for you. Lee
Thanks for the video Lee , i appreciate it . By the way , is there other good ways to return it? If got , could you show it ? Sorry for troubling you.
Hi Coach Lee.
How are you? Hope you fine. I have a question. I play mostly in double. I have one opponent like to serve high. Can you advice me best way and how to return this kind of service. Im a bit confuse better to smash or clear.
Thank you Coach Lee. May GBU.
Hi Coach Lee,
Thank you for the detailed steps and instructions! After adopting your method, my return rates have improved and even scoring a netkill at times!
I have a question though, what if my partner is returning the service and I am behind. What kind of stance should I adopt?
Thanks!
You should make your feet side by side to the opponent receiver, put your racket forward and lower your posture. Lee
Hi Coach Lee, when i put my racket forward, should i hold it in backhand grip or forehand basic grip or the grip doesn't matters?
You must grip the neutral grip to be ready both side attack. Should not griped forehand or backhand. Lee
Thanks Coach Lee!!
You are welcome. Lee
Thank you for all these advices Coach Lee. I just wonder where and when (after which step) to return in a mixed double ?
Please explain bit more detail as I would like to give you accuriate answers. Lee
We can see on this video that the receiver stay to the net in the middle of the court after his "rush" on the service. In a mixed double has he to take the same stance ? Or has he to go back and let her partner take the net ?
Sorry if there are some mistakes. I am french and i don't know the specific vocabulary :)
Sincerely,
Régis
Yes you are right. Mixed doubles, man has to go back and his partner should move to the net nafter man return opponent low service.
There will be clip for it please look for it. Lee
Thanks for your answer. I'm looking foward your next clips. Régis

I think the way you discribe is the best possible way to do it.
hi coach lee, what would be the right posture and grip for backhand when you do a low service return in doubles ??
when you ready to receive it you should have ready grip/neutral grip and when shuttlecock is coming to your backhand side then you change grip to backhand.
What posture and what kind of backhand grip is depending on how early and how late you are taking the shuttlecock. It is not possible and not right saying it should be this way as there will be many situations. Lee
its making much more sense for what I should do know. Thank you coach lee.

Hi Coach Lee,
thanks for your insightful tips, but please can you demonstrate how on earth this can possibly work for the dreaded drive serves? I encounter them regularly and can not handle them well.
Interestingly there seem to be no one to teach drive replies and Pros don't do them, so I think they must suck, BUT I can't figure out, why...
Thank you for your good point. I have never thought about making clips on how to return drive service from opponent. I will make clips on that. Thank you very much for bring the point. I do know that many club players are finding very hard to return them. Thank you. Lee
