I also have a course on publishing non-fiction on Amazon (paperback, Kindle and audiobook on Audible): courses.robcubbon.com/p/write...
The video shows you how to design a paperback book cover selling through Amazon KDP, which is Amazon's self-publishing arm. The cover artwork needs to have a front cover, back cover, spine and bleed. This is possible to do using Canva, the free online graphic design website.
Firstly the video shows you KDP's Cover Template Generator here kdp.amazon.com/en_US/cover-te... and how to enter the correct info: page size, page count (page sides), and paper color. Once downloaded the PNG can be uploaded at Canva to act as a guide to your front cover design. - Навчання та стиль
I've watched a half dozen of these. Yours was the only one that helped to eliminate the error messages. Thank you, Rob.
Well explained! Thank you! I'm new to canva.. I was using gimp before createspace moved to kdp.. So it's been a while and needed to refresh my memory on how to do things.. Cheers again!
You're very welcome, Jon!
Thank you for this! I have struggled for 2 weeks trying to figure out how to do my book cover. This was a stress relief for me. Easy to understand and exactly the information that I needed!!! Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!!!
Glad it helped!
@@robcub40 Thank you very much, You just saved me from spending $59 on software that was going to do pretty much the same thing. Ticked...Subscribed.
Wow this is exactly what I needed to learn. I'm thinking of making a book and was nervous on how everything will work out. But these UA-cam videos are making me confident that I can do this!
What a brilliant video! Makes a nice change for a youtuber to launch straight into an explanation rather than wafflikng on for two minutes. Love it how you got straight to the point - thanks for a great video! :-)
My pleasure
perfect. so many others just waffle with needless resources. I knew amazon had to provide you with the templates. Thank you!!
FINALLY! a well explained video that gets to the point and shows you how to do something! thank you! thank you!
Yeah, it's amazing how many channels there are claiming to have huge success with KDP, and yet they're not prepared (or not able) to show this being done live. Great video!
Thank you so much for this video! I spent hours trying to figure out how to design my cover using canva and it was so difficult. Now because of your video, I have an excellent book cover that I am proud to send out to my potential readers. Be blessed!
Glad I could help!
Thank you so much. For years I've only been writing ebooks because I couldn't figure out how to do the covers. Thank you.
You are so welcome!
You my good sir are a good send! I was pulling my hair out watching a ton of other videos but you broke it down in canva eloquently! Thank you!!!!
my pleasure
Thank you so much Rob. You helped me design my first book cover. Explanation was on point. Appreciate it and had to subscribe to your channel.
Awesome, thanks for the sub.
Great info! I've just recreated the steps for my own cover and got perfect results!
Glad it helped!
Thank You Rob!!! You just solved my issue and gave me back some time in my weekend.
You're the best! Been looking for this for a while. Direct, clear and to the point. Cheers!
Thank you, Shayan
Thank you for this short informative video. You touch the most needed part of self-publishing, The book template size, and the cover. Thank you so very much
my pleasure
Very easy explanation brother. I am new to these stuff. I just finished my 1st manuscript. Just need to hand draw my book cover and use canva site .
Very easily explained
Thank you
Very helpful advice. After trying several other videos your's was the one that saved my day. Thank you. I will check out your other course, too.
Glad it helped!
New subscriber here. This clear and to-the-point tute is wonderful. Back in 2017 I designed a book cover using the CreateSpace template and Photoshop Elements. It took me forever to get it right, because I didn't know about Canva and the tips and tricks. Thank you so much for creating this tute. I'll be checking out your starter course for sure.
Thanks
thank you for showing people like me who are not at all tech savvy! you showed in detail of every step! thank you!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for this video Rob, it has saved me loads of hassle and stress.

I love the way you explain this. Thanks so much. I am a lover of Canva
Genius. Hero. Straightforward solution to my problem. Subbed and liked!
Same thing as what Nancy Allen said. Thank you very much, Rob. Good luck with your book sales :)
Finally someone that goes thru step by step instruction and close so we can visualize the words from the program. Good job. Thank you so much for the great class. Do you have a class on how to create pages for the no content book and how to upload it to KDP. If so it would be awesome..
Thank you for very clear instructions. I had to go back and forth and repeated certain parts umpteen times but in the end I think it will run. Much appreciated!
My pleasure
@@robcub40 Using your instructions, my short story book will be available on Amazon in 5 days' time! Thanks again!
Thank you so much!!!!Just what I needed.
Thank you! This is very helpful and not long at all!

You're very welcome!
This really helped me. Thank you.
The most beautiful explanation, thank you Rob!
I have a question, please! Can Canva free images (with flowers, cute animals...), be used in the design of a cover for KDP?
Ask Canva if their images are free to use for commercial use. :)
Thank you, again Rob!
This was super helpful, thank you.
Thank you for the video and help !!
Awesome video! Wish I had used this when I published my short stories book on Amazon (Totally Tubular Tales). Hopefully I'll have a future project I can use this on.
Thank you so much! I have been tearing my hair out on this and even tried Book Bolt which didn't work for me ... This was easy to understand and I'm so relieved. Thank you, thank you, thank you 😊😃😄

Glad it was helpful!
You saved me a year after you posted this ! THANKS
Cool!
It was helpful, thank you ;)
Very helpful. Thank you
Thanks for this, I had to re-submit a cover that Amazon rejected, I did in Book Bolt, but didn't realise I could do it in Canva, so also cancelled my book bolt trial, not needed!
Super helpful Rob, thank you!
Rob, I hit an issue, I downloaded the 9x6 inch template but it's 40mb... too large for uploading into Canva. What can I do?
Convert it to a JPG online and it'll be smaller
YOU'RE MY HERO!!!!!!
Very very helpful. Thank you for sharing.
Glad it was helpful!
Very useful and clearly explained and demonstrated.
Anyone who has printed books for themselves (NOT published) using such companies as Viking, DoxDirect or DoxZoo etc. will be familar with the positioning of spine text. Canva looks to use almost exactly the same method.
I'm not familiar with Viking, DoxDirect or DoxZoo. I would use Photoshop, Illustrator, Affinity Designer or Affinity Photo to position spine text. I think it's virtually impossible to do in Canva.
Thank you Sir!!
Thank You Rob - quality as usual ! Can you consider doing one for PPT and even Word?
Could do one in PPT or Google Slides, yes, but I wouldn't do a cover in Word.
thanks sir.. deeply thankful
Most welcome, Max
Will try and I will share how I make the cover size correct. However after listening to many cover videos this one is by far the most specific and concise. I am wondering about downloading initially from the KDP template as a PDF directly from KDP. As an aside It took me a minute to realize when KDP says cover it does not mean front cover only it means front cover & spine & back cover as in the entire outside of the book. KDP has its own language and maybe we can call it KD Panguage ( pang-long a sound-quidge- like English language?) Thanks for the details and screen shots. Very helpful.
Amazing! Thanx a lot!!!
You are welcome!
After struggling with this book cover for a day or so, I found this video. Then I found another video. That one was CONFUSING. So, I switched back to this one and had an "A-HA" moment! Thank you, Rob. Now, if you could do me a favor and sell four or five million copies of my book for me, I would appreciate it very much. Seriously! Thank you for this!
Thank you, Rob. Cover designed and submitted to Amazon this morning. Kindle edition has already been out for a few days and is not selling like hotcakes. But, at least the book is done. Moving on to other things now. I am able to move on thanks to this video, which helped me a great deal.
Thank you!! Thank you! Thank you!
You are so welcome!
You are the best
Thank you!
Thank you Your awesome
You are!
Thank you very much sir
Aswm thank you 🌹❤️
Awesome thank you 🙏
You are so welcome
Thank you 😊 sir
Thank you!!!!!!!!!
Great explanation there, Rob. One question though. For the spine, how do you fill in the colour when you use full-length coloured pictures for the front and back and have stayed within the pink margins?
Thank you so much. Yeah, for the spine, or the front or back covers you can just put a black or some colored box for the background color and then add the text. I usually put a black box to cover the whole of the back cover and the spine and then the front will be an image. But you have to be very careful to make sure the box is on the line between the spine and the front cover. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.
Verygood. One query please. If for front and back and spine you have your own images ready, are these to be positioned to the inside edges of the orange margin, the outward edges or the trim line?
So, this depends on if the images have a background color. If they do, they need to extend beyond the trim line to the bleed line (to and over the outside of the orange/pink lines), if that makes sense. In the example I do above the front image is on a white background so I didn't have to bother with this. I hope this helps.
awesome.....
Thanks Rob, I am watching this in 2021. Very clear and helpful, finalising my first book on KDP. I assume that the fonts are automatically embedded in the PDF Print as you don't mention it in the video? I tried to find this information Canva help but couldn't. Hopefully you can help? Thank you!
Glad it helped, Jane. Yup, fonts are always embedded in PDFs.
Good video bro
Thankyou so much! Do you know how to find a cover template for a A6 4 by 6 pocket size? I cannot find it anywhere and kdp doesn’t offer that size template but allows you to publish a book in those dimensions.
Thank you. Sorry, 5 x 8 inches is the smallest paperback size Amazon KDP offers. kdp.amazon.com/en_US/cover-templates
Thank you
Great video mate. What is CMYK?
4 days of frustration of creating beautiful covers for KDP for LCB and when I try to upload it was showing error every single time.
What am I missing?? Where am I going wrong was my thought yesterday and your video was the answer from the universe today. How I wish I can share a screenshot of my phone screen( I will be downloading on my laptop again) right now while I was watching your video. I downloaded the template guides.
Blessing in disguise.
Haven't come across many YTers who actually showed the steps you showed in this video.
Thank you for your detailed video.
Really appreciate it.
Subscribed 😊 🙏
I'm sorry I left this step out of the tutorial. You need to convert the PNG you get from KDP to a JPG. You can do this for free online using a site like png2jpg.com/ it will change the size from ~30MB to ~200k
Hi I followed your instructions and when I uploaded my file I can see the background cover but none of the images. Does it take a long time to show because they sent a message saying it was approved
Thanks so much for the video! How about the ISBN barcode?
Nice video. Which video editor are you using to make your youtube video?
Screenflow for Mac
HI. Thank you for this. My PDF Reader Pro does not give the page size in file properties. Is there a specific version you are using to get this? I only see 8,5 x11 in the document info. Thank you again.
Actually, the actual size is written on the PDF you download from KDP!
Hi Rob. I'm delighted meeting your video. Need your help. I can't find the kdp cover template on Google from my phone. Tried searching but got other suggestions. Can you kindly send me the link please. Thanks
kdp.amazon.com/en_US/cover-templates
Great video. Can you please confirm that it can be done 100% with the free version of Canva, whatever the dimensions of the book you target (ex: 5x8, 6x9, etc.)? Thank you
I believe it's still possible. I had a look on Canva and it's all the same. the KDP template generator has changed a bit since but it's still the same in essence. Yeah whatever book size should be OK with the free version of Canva.
Nice
Hi, i wanted to ask a question. i had uploaded my pdf and my front/back cover came out in color, but when i uploaded my content for inside my magazine, why is everything inside black and white. can you show me how to fix
