    Wacom Cintiq 16: amzn.to/36Vz9MV
    Wacom Tablet Stand: amzn.to/3adpxPu
    Wacom Remote: amzn.to/2tZi8Tu
    Wacom Pro Pen 3D: amzn.to/35NUvug
    Ergotron MXV arm: amzn.to/2uQqVHK
    The Wacom Cintiq 16 is a great Monitor Tablet that deserves an in-depth review with a full-length speed-painting and pen test. In this video I want to show you the full features and everything about this Wacom tablet including the optional stand as well as giving you the option to mount it on an Ergotron MXV monitor arm (which I'll unbox and set-up in another video). I'm going to do pen tests and give you my fullest opinion. If you have any questions, feel free to ask in the comments - I answer every comment and I've been using the the Wacom Cintiq 22 since it came out!
    Until next time, keep on creating!

      I hate that wacom made this tablet better than the 16" pro . And that's why cause my 16"pro don't have the versa mount witch is the best mount ever . So I can't work comfortable . Thank you wacom for paying 1700 euro for a old tablet

      Have fun Carolyn. I get a lot of comments on my channel about how Procreate on the iPad is better than Photoshop and it's exactly this type of reason why you need a real application rather than a little tablet app to do some art in my opinion. Have fun drawing!!!

    I thought I would add, an instrument in the hands of a master means a whole different experience and world, which many aspire to become. Knowing the instrument can sing, can be half the battle to know one can reach those dreams. One just can't get there with a tin can:) Thanks for the wonderful demo!! The person who mentioned that is a pro' colour artist for Marvel and DC - He does colours for a living. Most will not notice it. A lot of people do get 'excited' over the tiny 3% difference in specs but it's only a few pro's who can actually tell the difference. I think his opinion is valid in that case! The good thing here is that we know he's a real pro as well rather than just one of the people telling us he is. haha.

    *Made me feel better* watching your art process here because, like you said, taking more time and care for the detail and almost not using any fancy brushes may make us feel less professional*. But it's just a way of working, any artist can have his favourite process and learning techniques.
    *I actually work mainly as graphic designer, but i've been drawing and painting digitally for years, which is my living passion and does provide me extra income. So even though i am currently doing a lot less art than the average professional, I still consider myself an (almost) professional artist XD

    Great video, You're amazing! It deserves to buy because of it's low price point. If what you need is the best best pen with no compromises this is it. The downsides are that this does not have a laminated display so you have some parallax and there are also no shortcut keys on the device.
    The digital pen of the XP-Pen Artist 15.6 Pro is using is also really good and jitter free. The addition of a laminated screen is a nice addition and really reduces parallax.

      Unfortunately the Cintiq 16 uses a different pen tech so it can't use the Staedtler pen at all. However there is nothing stopping anyone from creating one that does work with all Pro Pen 2 Cintiqs ;)

    Hi Lawrence ! Great review! I like so much of your channel and your honest.
    I love wacom products, i have a wacom intuos for almost 5 years now and never had any problem. I read some of the comments below and i would like to say something about my personal experience with wacom prices.
    I live in Brazil and here this specific display tablet cost almost R$9k(in reais) - Something like $1700 dolars. And i'm keep thinking why this ? why they need be so expansive ? Why the price is it not normalized? If you add taxes and fees to final price still not justifed why they charge so much here. I imagine if wacom knows
    about this kind stuff. I don't know.
    I know for example Huion sell her tablet here for less than half of price.
    Here, for hobby and some pro artists...this tablet is just a dream!
    I just wanted to give you another opnion about and say why i think people still complaing about the wacom table cost. Again thank you for all great stuff.

      I heard Tech is more expensive in Brazil. I presume that is down to the government charging Tax. The UK does the same. Obviously it isn't as much but we pay more than America and other countries too :(

    Great video and information! I was just about to purchase the Cintiq 16 Pro, but I guess it must have been on sale this weekend. The price yesterday was $1199 and today it's $1499. Do you know if there's much difference in the parallax between this and the Pro? Parallax and the USB-C/Thunderbolt connectivity to my 2019 MacBook Pro were the main reasons for considering the PRO, but now at $1499 it just seems too much. $650 for the non-Pro Cintiq seems like the better buy right now.

    The sRGB range only (not full Adobe RGB) , or washed out colors (previous to calibration): Workable. Many digital POD companies require just that. Specially with a second (if pro and also calibrated) monitor to check and a calibrator (imo this is a must for any serious professional activity, anyway. And even more of a need with XP Pen and Huion, than with the fairly well calibrated from default Cintiqs). Also, with the monitor to check, there might be some intense green (or blue, etc) escaping into the Adobe RGB range, but that's rarely gonna be printable by your client's print company, and also, you can play, seeing it in the second monitor, with tones that depict same "sensation" even with less saturation and intensity, After all, is about contrast. The strongest green neon, besides other intense lights, is perceived as a weak "meh". While even a darker, unsaturated "neon green", if put together with much darker and very low saturation tones, bam!, you got your laser beam shining like real laser! This is due to how our brain perceives colors and contrast. And mastering that is one of the main tricks in the whole deal.
    No keys in the tablet. The use of a keyboard is non avoidable in every serious apps usage.
    The resolution : this problem has been waaay too magnified. If you are noticing the dots of the screen: First, congrats, as unlike me, you'r surely a young teenager with yet excellent eyesight. Please don't abuse it, as our digital world is gonna make a lot of ppl reach mid forties - 50 like me, with glasses for working yes or yes. Which helps consolidating the recent point: To keep your eyesight fine, besides trying to work only 8 hours a day, close your eyes for 20 seconds every 20 minutes, and not abusing screen at free time, you need to work NOT "smashed" to the screen, but at a good distance, and the back straight (this also avoids neck and back issues). So... IMO at the right distance, working at 1080p, tootally fine, you should not see the pixel. And if you do, please combat any form of obsessive compulsive habit, those aren't good to have. Remember ! (or what your dad told you) : in the 80s and 90s the arcade machines showed pixels the size little coins. And Proudly! The pixel was honored: It is beautiful, remember that. Said by a former pixel artist in that style.
    My grip is size, but seems 16" is for students and hobbyists, while 22" and up is for old pro farts ;)
    Is this the best and only tablet you can buy at this price? Nope! But is a good purchase. And I like the durability of every wacom device I have. If worrying about that, it's already a no-brainer. If not such a priority, there are also other very good tablets. But u don't go wrong with this in terms of quality.

    Good review Lawrence and very helpful narrative of your drawing style. One question though: you are obviously using PS here, but you did mention Corel Painter. Presumably you use both but why would you use e.g. PS over Corel and vice versa? By the way, I am new to digital art and just exploring Corel Painter. I have PS and have used it for photography for years, just didn’t see it as a serious digital art tool, hence exploring Corel.

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  4 роки тому +2

      Hi Hugh, great question! I don't recommend one over the over. The idea that one is better than the other is an idea created UA-camrs who make 'Vs' videos or top ten lists. They are different tools and quite often during my commission work I'll use both Photoshop and Painter on a single painting to achieve the final look. Each application has unique abilities. You're a Photographer, so imagine me asking why you use more than one camera - same principle. Each has a different feel and gives you different results, comes with different brushes/lenses... you get the idea.
      As a Corel Painter Master I should and will of course recommend Painter. It's fantastic and my art wouldn't be what it is today without it. It might be a good idea for you to explore a different application just so you can separate yourself from your photography work. Painter's brushes are very different and aimed more at Painters and artists - once you find the right brushes for you then it really does open up an entire world of difference. Unlike most, I use standard brushes in Photoshop and don't pick the cool hair/skin pattern brushes which do all the work for you - You might might of noticed that in this video. That's because I don't like unpredictable brush strokes. I need to know what my brush is going to do. Painters brush engine is far more advanced than Photoshop's. They rebuilt it from scratch about four years ago. Whereas the Photoshop engine is about twenty years old and can't be changed without tearing out the guts of the program. Photoshop still works great though so it's not really an issue.
      Really wish I'd of painted this Corel Painter. I think it might of come out nicer. I might have to move it over there and give it a touch up. It was only for UA-cam so I never really considered doing anything with that. Glad you enjoyed the video! Hope my answer helped.
      BTW. I beta test both PS and Painter. Have done for years and have used these applications for many years. Both are second nature to me. I tend to use PS more on UA-cam just because I think the audience knows it better (and I don't and Painter on all my devices). I will make more Painter videos in the future. Back when I took up digital art in the mid 90's Photoshop was still quite basic (compared to today) but it was a lot more accessible than applications like Painter. Which were seen as a little more experimental. Over the years so many of us started to use Photoshop for our illustration & art that it became the standard. Especially in the industry. Because studios had Photoshop they wouldn't pay for a Painter licence as well.

      I've already recorded it! I just need to polish up the video. You wouldn't believe how much work it takes to put a video together. Especially the editing stage. I don't watch Aaron's channel any more. Not since he got over 100,000 subs and told me he was too big to do livestream with me now. He just stopped talking to me and wouldn't respond to my messages even though we'd been friends for a very long time. I was very upset that he did that. He obviously wanted to work with bigger UA-camrs and focus on his channel but he went about it all wrong. While I won't say this in a video... I won't support or watch his content.

    Hey Lawrence! I have been watching your stuff for a while. I got my Ergotron arm for my Cintiq pro 24 based off of your recommendation and I love it, thank you. My friend got a Cintiq 16, and I was going to get him a Ergotron arm. You recommend the MXV arm, but since it's under the weight recommendations (7-20lbs), is there any fear of the drawing tablet drifting, upward? The one recommended from Ergotron customer service was the Neo-Flex Monitor Arm. I didn't see any reviews from you on that arm. Any thoughts Neo-Flex Monitor Arm or recommendations on the direction I should go? Thanks, for the content and your insight.

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  3 роки тому +1

      I never had the urge to review the Neo-Flex Monitor Arm. Yes it might do the job well but if you upgrade your tablet in the future then the arm might not handle the larger tablet. Personally I like to make sure I go with an arm that is future proof. Now I never recommend an arm or product I've never tried. I think the Ergotron MX is a great arm for your tablet. You also have to factor in the point that you will add extra weight when you rest your arm on the tablet too - it's not just a monitor that you look at. Hope that helps. Sorry that I can't advise you on the Neo-Flex Monitor Arm, I just don't like to talk about products I've not personally tested.

      It is a great question David! Think of the tablet as just a screen. The pen (stylus) is like a mouse. You need the applications like Photoshop to draw with. And think of brushes like different fonts. You can pick whichever one you think works best for whatever you are creating - something serious, something silly, maybe something Halloween themed even!
      I always say if you can draw a straight line and a circle then you can draw anything. You just need regular practice. Do one hour a day. Doesn't matter if it is on paper or digital as long as you keep it up!

      People get angry when they want something and can't afford it. Especially when they can't express themselves fully. That's the same in any case. Not just with tech but with everything in life. I personally don't understand why people have built this Wacom Vs the 'others' mentality. I think it's just media clickbait to get views. People don't own shares in these companies so there's no reason to take sides. Each tablet should be judged on it's individual merits in my opinion.

    I've seen your video about Microsoft Surface pro 6.

    What are your thoughts about Surface pro 7?
    Is it a good device to continue growing after Huion Kamvas 20 pro and getting slightly mobile?

    Or go fully mobile windows with its full Photoshop functions?

      Surface Pro 7 still has the same pen technology as the Surface Pro 6. They haven't updated it at all. In fact things are worse now... Microsoft Surface team report to the Microsoft Office team and reports are that they really have no interest in artists at all and are not going to update their pen technology now. The new slim pen is not any better. So I wouldn't pay money for a new Surface. It is not great compared to other devices on the market. Very sad.
      The iPad is good in terms of pen tech but for pro's it is sadly lacking of real programmes and only uses apps. That's my issue there. I prefer to go with a real 2-in-1 and have a real tablet on my desk! Question is... do you really need to be mobile?

    I appreciate how seriously you evaluated this Cintiq model despite it being on the lower end. In fact, it'd be very useful to most people as it's Wacom's most affordable device to look to right now. Also, I'm fairly sure that this was the first 16-inch pen display to include a VESA slot, and that you're the first person I've seen demonstrating it with a suitable mounting arm, so big thanks for that! It's unfortunate that Ergotron's products are way outside of my budget. I managed to find alternative brands, but most only had a height of around 25cm. I checked out the one you got, which says 30cm. May I ask if this height difference sounds too drastic to you?

      I recommend Ergotron because I have researched them very well. I know how exhaustively they test their products and how much effort they put in behind the scenes. I trust them. Also, I only give my personal recommendation to products I have tried and even then to those devices and software's I tested for a good period of time. A lot of reviewers who do similar channels seem to unbox something, test it for the day and never touch it again :(
      I will say that Amazon sell an Amazon Basics arm that looks a lot like the Ergoton LX arm. It might be worth looking at. I think you have to use multiple monitors. I use a great HP monitor. I have also reviewed that. It's actually quite affordable. I could still upgrade to super pro one but I have worked in print for years so I mainly work of CMYK values so it doesn't bother me even if I'm a little out. Everything is digital print anyway now so that's not even accurate - haha.
      I would prefer touchscreen but that is the point of the Pro range. I know you go into comics for the love, not the money though :( that's why I din't stick around long!!! :O Real shame it never paid more. I did a video on Jim Lee once btw.

    • @arifpria

      I have a Yoga laptop with a pretty wide color gamut 4K screen, so that does the job pretty well. But still, every time I got my comps I always compare the printed book side by side to my monitor. Every. Time! :D
      Actually I'm making pretty good money from comics. I have a small team of colorist and we usually worked on at least two 20-page books each month. 40 pages a month is really not a bad thing at all. But that mostly because I live on a country where $ has strong value when converted to my local currency. In fact, most South East Asian artists I know, are living pretty well. And that's not including royalties we receive twice a year.
      But I do agree that it doesn't pay more. My page rate has always been the same for years. Although I can say the same thing to most comic artists too. Unless you got an exclusive deal, you rarely get a raise. The only thing you can do is do more pages! haha

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  2 роки тому +3

      The arms are made for monitors - not tablets. Artists normally tilt drawing tablets a lot more, lean on them too etc. You need to get an arm that can handle more than just the weight of your tablet. Especially if you want better stability. That said, it is a moving platform and will never be 100% still for you which is why I let the bottom edge of my tablet rest on the desk when I need that total stability.
      The Ergotron MXV is a super powerful arm that will take a lot of weight but probably is overkill in this case. I will say though that you will not see any wobbly from it whatsoever. I am just worried that your tablet might be too light to give you the ability to move the arm around.

    • @seltys9691
      @seltys9691 2 роки тому

      I asked customer service for a long time and finally realized that if the monitor is too light, it will only cause the joint behind the monitor to bounce up and not be able to maintain 90 degrees of vertical lift. That obviously doesn't affect painting and 1.9kg isn't too light to bounce up i guess.

    Nice review i agree on pretty much everything . I will love to see a samsung flex review maybe with a comparison with some other 2 in 1 . You find tons of artists reviews about the ipad pro but pretty much nothing about all these new 2 in 1 like the flex , the spectre , lenovo c940 and such . I still think that a windows machine is better than Ipados for any kind of application . Wacom sells its OEM tech to virtually every company out there. Mostly active stylus tech, some EMR tech but none, not even Samsung get the same EMR tech that they put on the Wacom tablets. To be honest, even the OEM EMR does not come close to Wacom EMR. There are too many differences. Also you've got pen shape as well which doesn't seem like a big deal but when you use something for hours at a time and it can give you hand-cramp... I think it's important.

They bought the 2nd best pen tech on the market at the time and turned it into one of the worst because they didn't bother developing it. All because Microsoft think that pens are only for note taking. They are run by the Office 360 team!! They don't care about artists. Really sad. Other than the c940 and the HP zBook, you can try the Dell Precision line. Once you get inside they are all the same specs. Really you are just looking at the screens and little touches. If you want the best for art then it's gonna be the Wacom MobileStudio but the specs there aren't as good - just depends what you need.

      This does not have a 4k screen but if you are doing animation, video work that is 4k then yes it will show up on the screen - it just won't look as amazing. There are other differences too but mainly it is in the screen quality. Realistically it is about budget. If you are going to up your budget then I would recommend going for a larger size. Putting your extra money into the bigger screen rather than the better res' screen is a good option for a lot of artists. It really depends on what you are using the tablet for and where you are in your digital art journey. It's a very personal thing though and nobody can simply say that one is better than the other - except for their own needs.

I have never used a tablet so I know nothing, absolutely nothing. I tested a Wacom Pro for a day, but did not like the fact that I could not draw directly on the screen, so therefore I am thinking of a Cintiq instead.
    I wonder though - how do you get the software in to the tablet? Is it there from the beginning or do you download it from the Internet? And if you download it - how does it work? Is Cintiq like a computer with surf capacity or what?
    When I used the Wacom Pro I had to download the drawing program to my computer, but when you show the Wacom Cintiq 16 it looked like you had the drawing program in the tablet - is that so? How did you get it to the tablet? Was it there from the beginning, if not - did you download it from the Internet or what?
    What program do you use for drawing and is it expensive to buy? Right now I have donwnloaded the free software Krita to my computer. Is that a program you would recommend?
    Best regards: Pia

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  4 роки тому +1

      A Cintiq is like a monitor. You still need to plug that into a computer. It will use whatever software you already have.
      As an artist who works with a lot of authors I would say that if you are not used to creating artwork then maybe you should focus on the writing and hire an artist rather than trying to do everything yourself. I meet a lot of authors who do their own covers etc and unless you are a great artist then you are gonna hit a lot of heavy competition already on the market when trying to sell your book(s). Professional artists already own the software and know how to use it. You can focus on the writing and the promoting - even writing book number two.
      Sorry. I know that isn't the answer you expected but that is my honest advice. The alternative is spending a lot of money of a good tablet and decent software (because the cheap tablet and free software won't cut it). You may as well spend that time at work earning money to pay a great artist to do the work right the first time and enjoy it for years!

      As long as you're not doing it just to save money by not hiring an artist. Haha. I've seen it too many times. Buying a Cintiq, the software and wasting days/weeks/months trying to figure it all out is not really the answer that many first believe it is. I'm sure you can appreciate that. Also there's nothing wrong with a great bit of collaboration.
      I will say though that digital art and traditional art are two very different things. A typical Photoshop brush works differently to a Winsor & Newton Short Flat Hog Brush obviously. While you can use knowledge such as colour theory, perspective, anatomy etc a lot of traditional skills will mean nothing when you try and apply it. There might be a lot of practice time to spend before you see the results you want on a tablet so don't be afraid of any upcoming frustration is all I'm saying. Check out Corel Painter which is the application that most emulates traditional painting tools. Although it is expensive you can get an 'Essentials' version which is awesome and more affordable. I was trained as a traditional artist but don't do any of that any more. I see so many try to transition. Some make it and some hate it. It's a journey either way. Hope you enjoy it. @@LAWRENCEcanDRAW yeah I figured it was unique to me. Every reviewer I've seen says they are really tough to scratch. Its now been 2 weeks since my exchange and I cant return it now. Its not too big a deal since the scratches are not visible when the display is on. I can only see them if a bright light hits it in just the right way. But there are tons of them all over the screen now. The tablet is perfect other wise. It really sucks.

    Are these sponsored videos by wacom in the sense that they send you the product for a review or it a product purchased for channel content ?

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  4 роки тому +2

      No. I'll explain why. While Wacom send the products, there is no expectation of a positive review. I have a very long history with Wacom. I've been using Wacom products for almost 30 yrs and am very happy with buying Wacom products. Also with company, their service and the products in general. I know more about them and their history than most, given my experience.
      Unlike many reviewers I do not sell the devices I review for profit. Sometimes I will donate them. My channel is not sponsored (even though i am brand ambassador for several companies - that's because i work with them to help improve their products). I always spend a minimum of two weeks with a product before reviewing it.
      I make no money what so ever from this channel. In fact, it costs me valuable time & money to run. So I buy very few products to review. Even then I only buy very small items. My studio is already equipped for my freelance work so anything I do need to buy - I do of course review. I do have a PayPal donate button on my Channel page for anyone who feels generous and feels they have benefited from my content. Unfortunately this has only gotten me $5 in the last 2 yrs it has been there.
      Going back to your question in more depth. Wacom know me as a professional artist who can showcase my talents on their tablets. I get emails saying 'do you want this?'. There isn't even the question of a review. Probably the assumption to be fair but I don't even get asked. At least not any more.
      I've got a Wacom 22 that I never reviewed. Which kind of proves that point. I really must finish that and get the video out. Might be nice to do that soon. I've had it a while and it's been such a good tablet to have in the studio.
      Hope that answers your question! I personally dislike a lot of other channels because they are sponsored and talk about VPNs, audiable or some learning website you can use their exclusive discount code at during their video. Those channels are just full time UA-camrs and not real artists. I don't trust their advice.
      It's not a bad thing to get the tablets sent to you. Some companies will demand a positive review but you just put your foot down and refuse. They always back down.
      I used to have a great relationship with Microsoft. You can see videos on my channel with me visiting their HQ but now they don't talk to me because I gave them bad reviews. I also am rough on Apple after being a user for 20 yrs so they don't talk to me either. The point is that being fair in product reviews doesn't always make you popular. Haha. I get a lot of hate in the comments too. I'd probably get more though if my stuff was sponsored too!
      Hope that helps. I thought I'd give you a full answer because it's a serious topic. Many UA-camrs make their livings from selling you their opinions - I make mine from drawing.

      @@LAWRENCEcanDRAW This is a great response and thx for this breakdown. I am a 3d tech artist, who always wondered how the process works as well in regards to product reviews/ building relationships with brands and other artist, given i am looking into doing reviews. I never realized all of this was happening behind the scenes. I also give you alot of props for doing all of this at no profit . Do you have any other advice you can share ?

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  4 роки тому +1

      Wacom isn't cheap but I do out of my way to review all of the brands so I can compare the tablets. I've used drawing tablets for roughly 30 yrs and I do believe that Wacom is worth the money. The reason they cost more is because they put more into the R&D departments. They did all the development of the pen technology in the first place. They use higher spec components than others. Just look at the metal stand on this compared to the plastic stand on the others. It's the same with the internal components. Wacom spends more. I talk to people at each of these companies and I've had conversations and asked the questions about why do yours cost more and why is it better? Why can't you do what Wacom can do? I know the answers and it is really interesting stuff ...if you are enough of a geek. lol.
      Happy to help. I've just had another person jump on me in the comments on this video about sponsorship. They attacked me straight away for being paid by Wacom though. That happens a lot!! (check that out). Any time you have a positive opinion about a product you'll get that. If you are negative you'll get hate on the other side. You can't win. Product reviewing is hard. You also will just get trolls just because people like to hate. You've got to have thick skin. I like to argue back which isn't always for the best but sometimes can work. haha.
      If you real want the review A.S. then you simply have to do something that makes you different to everyone else. You can't be the same as all the others. I was different but my tagline of 'reviewing tech for professional artists and creatives' has been ripped off by someone else now :( No matter. I am a vastly superior artist :D and my channel is gonna change this year into something a bit different. There are too many out there that have started doing similar things.
      I haven't seen many 3D tech artists reviewing stuff. Drop me a message on Facebook or Twitter. I might have a project we could work on together ;D I can give you more tips too!

      That would be cool but you'd have to have them be battery powered as well then to get rid of that cable. People would only complain about the battery life. It would make a basic tablet become super expensive. I do love the idea though. I think we would have seen more all-in-one tablets if Wacom's would have been more well received but it only proved that such a well crafted device was expensive to make.

    You don't make your own brushes or just using brushes to you is not a professional look?

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  4 роки тому +1

      I very rarely make my own brushes. Using other people's brushes is not professional in my eyes. I don't advise using other people's brushes because your artwork starts to look like other people's work. I think that is the basis of my argument. There is nothing that cannot be accomplished with the basic round brush with the tweaking of a few simple settings and putting in the time. A lot of custom brushes are simple time savers - which can be good for quick concept art but not for your best work!
      I think a lot of artists out there make a good amount of money from selling young artists brushes. I think that can be bad. The idea that you buy those brushes and you can paint like the pro's is just profiteering. I might be making too much out of the whole thing but if you take the easy route rather than putting the time in you won't become the better artist.
