    ==================
    The segment "Are Knitters like Australian Magpies" was based on the episode "The colourful life of the Australian Magpie" from the program "Off Track" on Australia's Radio National. This is a wonderful program looking at diverse range of topics around Australia's natural environment. Presenter Ann Jones does an amazing job of painting pictures in words, with interviews, commentary and sounds from the field. It's available as a podcast and is a treat if you have any interest in Australian wildlife.

    Magpie song recordings were made by Danielle, the Magpieaholic. Danielle seems to have an extraordinary relationship with the magpies in her area, and has some amazing photos and videos. Her site is definitely worth a visit.

    Interview with Ulrike Janssen
    =============================
    Ulrike Janssen is owner of Maschenwahn - which is German for "stitch-crazy".
    You can reach the shop easily from the Frankfurt Airport, by taking the S8 in the direction "Offenbach (Main) Ost" or the S9 in direction Hanau Hbf. Get off at the stop "Ledermuseum". The trip by train is around 26 minutes from the airport.
    You would be very welcome to drop by for a tea or coffee and some good German cake, a chat with Ulrike and her customers, and a browse of her wools and patterns.

    Three things I have in common with you Andrea: Love of knitting (bit of a yarn snob), hatred of sloppy necks, and I'm also a singer! Watching old episodes now and celebrating what a lovely man Andrew was. May his memory be a blessing.

    This episode is ADORABLE. i love it when Andrew verbally tickles Andrea, playfully interrupting with questions and pushing her buttons. It's a testament to your relationship that you didn't wallop him Andrea! But in all seriousness, it's this kind of charm that makes a podcast so watchable. Thank you for being so generous with your knowledge, skill and your personalities.

    Thank you for a different kind of knitting podcast. Although I enjoy the Canadian and some American podcasts, yours brings another element to podcasting...learning about knitting. I loved this visit to the wool shop but also very much enjoyed the visit and interview to the woollen and weaving mill. You have inspired me to stretch back into knitting sweaters( which I used to knitted 3 decades ago but gave up for a number of reasons). Please continue to share your style of podcasting.
    Ps I prefer co-hosted podcasts so please continue with your partnership on screen. Providing input from an experienced knitter and a beginner knitter is encouraging to a range of knitters. Carry on with your nice work.

    I am knitting while I'm listening to you two, and I have a smile on my face the whole time. You two are so adorable! It's nice to see the interaction between a novice knitter and a beginner. Can't wait to see more episodes. Thanks so much for sharing from Abbotsford, BC, Canada.

I took some knitting with me on a recent trip to Europe and had fun knitting in some beautiful places in Switzerland and Germany, not quite the extrem weather as Wales. Thank you so much for putting the links to the National Radio programe on Magpies. We had our couple who nested in our backyard in Croydon, Victoria. Daddy magpie chased out his wife after 15 years and brought in a new mate. For what reason, we dont know. Perhaps she couldnt produce a male. Will have to ask a bird expert. He was with us for nearly 20 years. Brought his babies to us when they fell out of the nest. He would put them in the wattle tree at our back door. And we would put them on the hills hoist clothes line for the parents to feed during the day. Then put them in a rabbit hatch of a night for protection from cats. He walked one of his babies a block to our house. As he knew it would be safe. Wish we had come to Frankfurt when we were driving through Germany in 2019 to visit.. Does Ulrike still have the wool shop? As Im watching this 4 Jan 2022. Thinking of you Andrea and Madeline.💖

    Hello! I am working in Ansbach, and will certainly travel to see the shop Maschen Wahn, visit the web site, and look into the other designers. I am so glad to be here in Germany. I found a shop here in Ansbach today, and bought a little something to make a scarf. Mitts and a hat would be more practical, but here we are. I hope I get to meet you Andrea and Andrew, and the lovely furry fellow. I love your program, and recommend it to all my knitting friends. Educational and enjoyable. Knit on!!!

    Earth colours would suit you Andrea .
    Beige camel rust love the jumper behind you in the shop .
    Check your veins on your wrist if green then warm colours suit , if blue veins cool colours suit , so if blue veins buy a pink that’s more purplish so it’s cool . Xx

    I should pass through Offenbach last summer to visit old friends in Darmstadt, by train from Frankfurt airport:) Next time I know where to find good yarns and big table when around Germany. I remember it's hard for me to find yarns in Berlin a couple of years ago when I stayed there for a week. Two shops I googled were not open when I was looking for yarns in late Oct, just in time for knitting thick jumper. Very nice interview with Ulrik Janssen and I learned that danish design got a bit of Japanese influences. Good information. Appreciate!

    I know it's 2 1/2 years since you made this video, but here is my suggestion for fixing the baggy V-neck on the blue jumper: Rip out the existing ribbing, and replace it with a wider 5 or 6 cm ribbing, knit with the yarn held double. This closes up some of the width of the neck opening, and beefs up the ribbing to a weight comparable with the weight of the remainder of the jumper. It would feel like the substantial doubled ribbing on a crew neck sweater, but you can still keep the style line of the V-neck.

    If a jumper has dropping shoulders, you can fix that by sewing a cotton band into the shoulder seam. That's done by tailors if working with sweatshirt fabric or other stretchable fabric. Of course you'd need to gather the seam to the desired length. If you fix a lightweight garment, you can use transparent rubber bands, which are meant for that purpose or when sewing t-shirts.
    1:00:10 In German you'd call this a "Falte" but in English "Pleat" would be the right term I believe.

    I just came across your Podcast and watch some of the later episodes. I loved the purist and wholistic style of your program so decided to start watching your podcast from the beginning. I love knitting and watching your show it's like being at a "stitch n bitch" knitting group. Hi Andrea and Andrew, your podcast is super interesting and fun. Thank you for putting this together for us. Have you heard of Kay Gardiner and Ann Shayne? They are a team called MasonDixonKnitting and they have a blog called masondixonknitting.com. Kay told us about your podcast because of your Alice Starmore sweaters. Ann and Kay share your love of Alice and Jade as well as Rowan patterns/yarn. I think the love of all things Rowan was the jumping off place of there friendship. They are wonderful knitters too.
    Also, I love knitting socks, they are my favorite so I hope you both love them after a few pairs. They are so portable and you can get any kind of fun pattern for them too. Finally, I am learning a lot already with your sweater knitting. I love them but have made some that are not the best fit but I am learning every time. Thanks again and see you soon. I think the neck has decreases each side of centre stitch for as many rows as you want the neck to be, then increases both sides of centre stitch for inside part until same number of rows as outer part. Then cast off in rib sewing the folded neckband to the inside picked up row, i have done this on many school jumpers when my kids were little.

    For Andrew's blue jumper would you consider using that extra skein of yarn and doing a crochet chain from one shoulder to the other across the base of the neck to stabilize it? I have used this type of stabilization with good results. You may have to experiment to get a good tension. I have found the three needle bindoff increases the stability of shoulders as well.

    Andrea, I'm rewatching your episodes from the beginning. Can you tell me if the pattern for the Zig Zag sweater is available in English?

      Hi Suzanne. Andrew here. I know that Ulrike mentioned Marianne Isager and Bente Geil, but I couldn't say now who designed which garment. You might get in touch with Ulrike at Maschenwahn. She may be able to help you.

    wool is really expensive here in the US, I was thinking of getting a white sheep. what do you think? can you do a show on that? how do I get them to grow great hair and shear it twice per year. or do you recommend an alpaca? not sure, I live in Chicago.
