  • This is a photo collection of Hans Joachim Marseille, who was called "Stern von Afrika".
He was one of the greatest German ace pilots. But his best merit was the rare beauty,I think.
I don't have any political ideology,so I made this only to enjoy the beauty of him.
Please understand my intention and enjoy watching!
First music is "Rumba Azul" by Lecuona Cuban Boys,Jochen's favorite song.
Second one is "Bolelo" from "Stern von Africa", his biopic made in 1957.

As a Frenchman by origin he should have been fighting against Nazi tyranny.
He downed hundreds of ally planes, enabling the Africa campaign. It was a monstrous campaign that aimed, among others, to approach the Holy Land and wipe out 600K Jews living there.
For being at the wrong side of history, he was struck on his chest while ejecting, as if God was saying: have a heart.

Well, actually Philipp and Hartmann would not have measured up to Marseille had Marseille not died in 1942. What made Marseille sort of special is that he only fought against skilled pilots, something that was many times not the case on the eastern front.
The other thing that made Marseille special was that he developed tactics in aerial combat that is still taught in air forces around the world to this day.
Only 5 pilots ever managed to become a triple ace in one day. Of these, only Marseille achieved this outside the eastern front. The other 4 achieved this over The Soviet Union in 1943 and 1944.
Marseille shot down 17 planes in 3 sorties in one day over North Africa on 1st September 1942.
He was probably the finest pilot ever to have lived and not only because of his flying skills but because of his humanity. He became famous for flying over an Australian airbase to throw out messages about downed pilots etc. Goering had directly order him to stop that. He was highly respected by all, even his enemy. The Nazis probably hated him because he never made any attempt to hide his distain of the Nazis.
Before arriving in Africa, he has been an unpolished diamond. Even Johannes Steinhoff could not make him to fall in line. It was first in Africa that Marseille came into his own, but he only did that by breaking all rules and disobeying all orders. They tried to court martial him at least twice. One of the times he was put forward for court martial, he was put forward for his knights cross which ironically caused a problem for Adolf Galland. At the end, Goering chose to ignore the call for a court martial because he believed there was more propaganda value in decorating Marseille again than subjecting him to a court martial since he was a national hero at that time.
Had he lived, he would very likely have become the finest fighter pilot Germany had ever produced.

@@Franz_Donnermann I agree with ThechiefEng's view that Marseille's achievements were particularly remarkable and superior. Marseille's combat experience against the skilled pilots of the RAF in North Africa was notably different from Philipp and Hartmann's engagements on the Eastern Front, where they often faced less experienced Soviet forces. Additionally, Marseille's innovative tactics in aerial combat, which are still taught today, highlight his exceptional skill and understanding of air warfare. His acts of humanity, such as informing the Allies about downed pilots, further demonstrate his honorable approach. Despite his tendency to defy orders, this independence likely contributed to his potential for even greater achievements. The high esteem in which he was held, even by the Nazi leadership, underscores his extraordinary status. Considering all these factors, it's plausible that had Marseille not died early in the war, he would have surpassed Philipp and Hartmann in both skill and impact.

I study WW2, and honestly, the most strong, kind and lovely person I've met from ALL over Nazi Germany was Hans, some facts that make me love him not only as an aviator but as a person is: When he shot down his first plane, he was sad thinking about how the downed Soldier's family would be, he was an anti nazi and mocked hitler constantly, he always tried to help his comrades and tried not to kill his enemies, using a tactic of not shooting directly at the point of the plane, he saved his black friend who was on a POW to escape the axis, he had a good big heart, he must be the role model for german youth, will never be forgotten ❤

A great video, sentimental yet at the same time inspiring, enabled by the excellent narrative and background music. Marseille is one of the most gifted and accomplished Luftwaffe fighter pilots of WWII. His air combat exploits were dazzling and his tragic death from an accident was a huge loss to the whole German air force and a heavy blow especially to its frontline morale in Africa. Unlike the general image of German soldiers in popular portrayal, Marseille had a very individualistic and flamboyant personality, which reminds me of another great ace of German military of the time i.e., the Wehrmacht panzer ace Kurt Knispel who was also a maverick similar to Marseille. In the case of Marseille, perhaps his ancestral French blood played a role in his disposition. Hans-Joachim Marseille the handsome, talented and naughty, you will be missed by all the military fans. RIP.

He was just a skinny kid, after all. His balls clearly weighed more than he did. Like so many others of his generation, he did not live to see his 24th birthday.
He was sparing of ammunition, and he was able to do that by getting within 100 yards of his target so as not to miss. To call him aggressive is to understate his approach to air combat.
Adolph Galland rated him as the best fighter pilot of the entire Luftwaffe, even though several others made more than twice his number of air to air kills. Coming from the General of Fighters, that is high praise indeed.

I read the books German Aces Speak Vol. 1&2. In it Johannas Steinhof describes his hilarious/ unfortunate role as Marseilles commanding officer early in the war. Steinhof finally tiring of Hans antics had him reassigned/banished to Africa. In Africa there was precious little booze, no women and no partying so Hans had no other reason not to become the awesome fighter pilot he became. Marseille was never one to shy away from a combat mission but he didn’t like the newer version of the ME109 and refused to fly a mission. General Kesselring, upon hearing this sent a direct order for him to fly. I believe had Hans lived, he would have become the highest scoring ace of the war leaving Erich Hartmann as the second highest scoring ace.
    Really enjoyed this video.

The guy had so much going for him, and he actually felt terrible if he killed an enemy in combat, preferring to hit the engine and blow it out, and avoided the cockpit area. He was also a trained pianist and would play for the bigwigs, Hitler walked out on one of his performances when he started off playing a classical piece then abruptly switched to Jazz music, a trick he pulled frequently. Nobody could match his instinctive shooting skills with that 109f-4 tropical, it had that murderous 20mm auto cannon firing the minegoschoss, a beast of a projectile, He needed only like 5 hits to bring down whatever he aimed at. Plus he was a playboy, and was grounded many times coming back from romps in town late at night so beat up from "frolicking". Peerless, absolutely peerless!!!!

read in one of his biographies, on one occasion he was in Berlin to receive an award, Iron Cross with Swords ( I believe but don't hold me to it) and in the audience was Hitler and he was asked, after learning he was a piano player, to play a tune. He played a few then broke into a jazz riff and started banging away really enjoying himself and looked over to see Hitler walking out with his entourage. He knew Hitler hated jazz.... my kinda guy.
That sound track to 'The Star of Africa' will forever more be his theme song....3:30 or thereabouts.

Japanese people pray for everlasting happiness, prosperity and peace in Germany. Germany and Germans are the most wonderful in the world. After the war, the German city was destroyed and many Germans were killed. We Japanese are very sad. I always pray to God that dead German soldiers and Germans souls are saved. We Japanese sent 9,000 cherry blossom trees to Germany in 1990. It is said that the money of this cherry blossom trees is gathered by the donation of the Japanese and bought a cherry blossom trees . Almost all Japanese people participated in donations. The Japanese always cooperate with Germany. This cherry blossom tree is still in Berlin. We Japanese love Germany and Germans very much.God bless Germany and Germans.Japan will always help Germans from now on.Japan's national anthem Kimigayo was made by Hayashi Hiromori and German Franz Eckert. It is a story in the Bando camp.About 100 years ago, there were many German prisoners of war in Japan.Japan did not treat German POWs awfully. The Japanese treated German POWs as friends. Japan respected German POW freedom. Germans were respected in Japan. They spread German culture and history, beer and sausages, Bam Kuuchen etc to Japan. The German bridge created by German prisoners of war is still well preserved in Japan.Japan did not want a war with Germany. At that time, Britain and Japan were allies. There was a request from the United Kingdom, and it became a battle with Germany.
Japan allowed German POWs to do sports and cultural activities.Exchanges between villagers and Germans were also popular. It is more correct to say that the camp where the Germans were located is a German village than a camp. When the Germans returned home, Japanese and Germans grieved for goodbye. This is a story that Japanese people helped Germans in japanese Okinawa Miyakojima, Japan. In 1873, the German Merchant shipRobertoson was hit by a typhoon. The ship was aground off Miyakojima Miyakokuni. At that time, the islander rescues the crew. They gave some food to the Germans. They gave Germans a place to sleep. The islanders repaired the German ship. The days were 34 days. And the islanders put a lot of food and water on the ship and sent the Germans to Germany safely. There are still monuments sent from Germany in Okinawa.Japan will always help Germans from now on.

Thank you. I edited it and my comment. Japan and Germany have a close relationship since about 150 years ago. Japan's national anthem Kimigayo was made by Hayashi Hiromori and German Franz Eckert. There are many Germans statues in Japan. Marseille, Rudel and Hartmann are very popular in Japan. May God bless you and the people of your country.

I have already commented about Hans. To my mind he represented everything you would expect on a winning side. He saved so many of his fellow pilots and guided allied pilots back to their lines: he could shoot in all points of the compass and always tried to shoot into the wings to allow allied pilots to bail out. Such is survival in war, he innovated tactics, now standard manoeuvres but without the Wizz kid style he possessed. Hans Marseille died because his commanding officer refused to allow him to fly his usual plane, but to test a new model; that plane's engine overheated and caught fire. He finally bailed out, hit a stirrup holding the tail in place, knocked unconcious and fell the ground. A shocking ending. He was just 23.

May all the Victims in World War One l & ll rest in peace🙏Here is a story I like to tell you. Before I was born my Mum and my Dad went into a cinema and saw the movie》The Star From Africa,a anti war movie about H.J.Marseille,played by the German Actor Joachim Hansen.Somehow Marseilles Nickname was Jochen.Well after my parents saw the movie they where so deeply moved by the story that they decided to gave me the name Jochen [which I never liked very much]But....then when I got older[my father died in 1986 and was fighting in the underground in Denmark against the Gestapo and SS,while my mother died in 2014 and grew up as a young girl in the 3 Reich]Well to shorten the story,I remembered why my parents gave me my first name[Jochen] So I bought me the movie on dvd and I was watching it and I started to cry and I wanted to know more about Marseille so I bought me a book from the writer》Franz Kurowski and it was always like deja vue,I can't not find other words.Like me he was born in December and some parts of his persona where like a mirror before my eyes. Then I felt a deep sadness about his tragic end and about all the victims and all Men and Women, and Children that lost their lifes all over the world in these bloody war😔 I m half danish and half german and so on,and I grew up with all the storys of world war ll from my mum that grew up im germany and from my dad that was around 1942 a Police Officer in Denmark etc and was 22 years old while my mum was around 1942 12 years old. They where both born in February my father on the 4th,my mother on the 1th.Well Marseille was 23 when he died.My message to the world is 》Don't let another war happen, because we are all part of the human family.A lots of rich people wants to fight, let them fight.Because in 2022 Blind Faith in our leaders, the media and or anything will put us all on the wrong track.Don't let this happen again !!
